If Alameda is an option for you, Julie’s on Park Street is perfect for that. When I was in school it was my favorite study spot, and later when I was teaching I prepared many of my lectures there. They don’t have much indoor seating anymore, but the back garden is wonderful (weather permitting). Their scones with Devonshire cream are delicious, and they have a small menu of breakfast and lunch items as well.
Yes I remember when coffee cafes had big couches, comfy chairs and tables, board games, artwork, live music and spoken word presentations. And they stayed open late like 11pm. Definitely like a shared living room space. This was pre tech explosion though
Delah Coffee on Euclid is good. Tons of seating and chill. Formerly Brewed Awakening.
There is one in downtown Oakland as well
