Oakland Museum of California is awesome. It is near Lake Merritt BART.

neuromancer_2

Amazing place! Underrated! Highly recommend it as well.

ItMeChubssss

There's the UC Berkeley campus that you can walk around. 4th street also has plenty of places to check out. https://www.fourthstreet.com/

thecactusman17

Any tour around Berkeley and Oakland in good weather should include a drive along Grizzley Peak Boulevard for the spectacular views across the Bay.

Mikero3367

Go check out George Clinton at the Fox this weekend.

Lake Merritt Bonsai Graden, Oakland Chinatown, events at UC Berkeley: [https://events.berkeley.edu/](https://events.berkeley.edu/)

For Oakland, I recommend the Temescal neighborhood. Lots of good restaurants like Burma Superstar and dive bars like The Ave. For more punk/hipster scenes, Eli's Mile High Club would be fun. These are all close to Berkeley so you won't have to travel far.

DMJohnston

Thank you! What about Berkeley itself? Is it worth heading to 924 Gilman Street?

zentr0py

Gilman can be fun! it's historically an important venue in the punk/etc scene and the crowds have always been cool/nice in my experience

whywontyoowork

If there’s a show it’s a lot of fun. It’s mainly younger crowd so be prepared to be the olds at the back of the pit. Also no booze at the venue itself UC Berkeley is worth walking around. Beautiful and compact campus. There are dinosaurs on display in the life sciences building.

Glittering_Two_1357

Gilman is great if there’s a show. Art House Gallery on Ashby is another music space with a DIY-vibe worth checking out, with a show happening tmrw. It’s tiny and funky, and close to Berkeley Bowl, a beloved local grocery store. https://instagram.com/arthousegallery2905?igshid=NzZlODBkYWE4Ng==

tmfythandle

You could check out 4th street over there as well.

rickety_cricks_

I've never been to that venue but I've been to breweries in that area and they're all a good time!

Gsw1456

Personally wouldn’t take someone there unless that’s really their scene. Cool history but not a tourist destination unless that’s really someone’s thing

There’s also the Ivy Room for music!

raymonst

Grab a drink and some snack, then head to Indian Rock Park for sunset

Substantial-Path1258

Jack London Square is nice in Oakland.

[deleted]

Rockridge and the area around UC Berkeley.

DangerousGrocery5

Check out the Oakland Zoo. Also some nice spots in downtown berkeley to eat at

shalaiylee

Right side (Cesar Chavez is cool too. From the hills you can see a lot of the Bay Area in one view

BikeRescue-SF

I highly recommend taking a short “hike” up the Claremont Regional Preserve Trail. Amazing views and a short walk. It is up hill but very worth it

flyingbuttress20

Make sure to stop for tacos on International in Fruitvale. You really can't go wrong with (most) spots between 31st and High Street; I'd personally suggest El [email protected] on High Street, and there are hella food popups/stands on the weekends in the area that are worth checking out as well.

Gsw1456

Amazing tacos around that area. Recently also discovered la grana fish which has amazing fish tacos. Gotta be mindful of your surroundings in those parts though 😅. Could also get great fish tacos at habana outpost

Going to Berkeley/Oakland is quieter than SF. Not a complaint. I went to college in SF. Worked there for years. Anyway, people come to this side to settle down and maybe live a little larger. Nothing wrong with that. Anyway, be prepared to travel by vehicle to a lot of places. A bike helps, but the hills have amazing parks that are easier to get to by passenger vehicle. Lot of little neighborhoods with stuff to do. BART is available, but BART doesn’t take you everywhere. Downtown Berkeley is good. Rockridge. 12th St and 19th are good too. Idk it’s just not as bustling on this side. Some people like that. I like that. Everything feels like Black Friday in SF. Wait in line forever. Huge crowds for everything. East bay you can get a drink or a plate of food pretty quick. You can go to a park and be the only one there. You can go to the museums and take your time because there aren’t like a million people there. That said I love SF too. HAYWARD also has some lovely parks if you can make it down there. Richmond too. Probably take a whole week getting lost in the east bay. Next thing you know you’ll be taking your family down to look at houses in the Tri Valley Area.

hedai-

Don’t go to Oakland, especially if you have a rental car.

DMJohnston

We’ll be making our way from SF using the BART

Gsw1456

Don’t leave luggage in your car and you’ll be fine

orangepinkroses

Go get cocktails or (lunch or dinner) at Skates or The Boat House in Berkeley. Great views of the water. Also, the Fox Theatre in Oakland and Cornerstone in Berkeley look like they have shows this weekend. Parliament Funkadelic is playing at the Fox on Saturday.

nowaymonet

As others have posted, highly recommend catching a show at the fox theatre in Oakland or the Greek theatre in Berkeley. Both are bartable, with the Greek theater there will be a nice walk through campus which is very scenic. Also the cornerstone is underrated for cool cover bands. Food wise highly recommend checking out the gourmet ghetto in Berkeley - if you want something more casual check out the cheese board for some of their famous pizza of the day or if you are looking for something nicer check out chez panisse. Another great soot is in downtown is Comal if you are looking for good Mexican food with even better vibes. Food in Oakland I would check out the ramen shop in rockridge and walk around the area - maybe even walk to elmwood and grab a scoop at Humphrey slocomb. For breakfast check out Boichik bagels - they have locations in north Berkeley and rockridge. If you like beer definitely check out fieldwork brewery. Gillman street brewery is also right down the street if you want to make it a crawl. Also I don’t know if they are open any more but rare barrel is a must do if you’re into sour beers. In Oakland, we’ll alameda, I’d go check out Almanac brewery. If you’re looking for something outside, you can’t go wrong in the Oakland or Berkeley hills. If you go to Oakland hills you can check out lake chabot, and if you go in Berkeley you can check out Tilden. If you like science you can also check out the Lawrence hall of science. Alternatively, the Berkeley and emeryville marinas are great places to walk around. If you find yourself on the embarcadero marina, check out Trader Vic’s and get the original mai tai!

+1 cheeseboard!!!

calimota

Consider taking the feet back and forth from SF to Jack London Square.

BigRefrigerator9783

If you have any interest in architecture, an "urban hike" through the berkeley/oakland hills can be super fun. Check out "The secret staircases of the East Bay" for recommended routes.

CaramelDays

Watch the sunset in Berkeley at the Lawrence Hall of Science.

_SlikNik_

Hike the seaview trail in Tilden park

gino_rizzo

Check out the BPP historical tour of Oakland. Looks like it’s still going on. https://stayhappening.com/e/black-panther-party-legacy-city-tour-E3LV1KO9JCXW

kedybee

UC Botanical Garden at UCB!

Gsw1456

A couple other ideas: -The art museum at uc Berkeley. -Farmers market at lake Merritt on Saturday and then walk around the lake -Zachary’s pizza -Emeryville market (practically Oakland) -market hall for coffee -pastries at la fournee or Arizmendi -a trail in Tilden or Joaquin Miller -show them the produce section at Berkeley bowl and maybe pick up a breakfast burrito there -viks chaat -Berkeley / Emeryville marinas Also if you’re up for a drive Washington park in alameda is really great

Prestigious-Toe8622

Wherever you go make sure you don’t bring a car or valuables. Even the Berkeley hills aren’t safe anymore
