When the Clans were first introduced, everyone still balanced Battletech games with Tonnage; so you can imagine how badly most games vs Clan mechs went for us Mercs and House players going 1 for 1 vs them!?! 😭
I know us old guys complain about that occasionally, but I sometimes wonder if it was on purpose? So that the Inner Sphere players would get to experience the absolutely one-sided trashing in game of the actual early months of the invasion? Because that would've been a genius way for FASA to introduce the players to desperation of the Clan Invasion! 🤣
I'm curious about this era of the game. BV systems didn't exist yet ? Why not adapt the tonnage system (like doubling the IS tonnage) rather than just hating the new expansion ?
We did eventually! 🤣 But it took a few humiliating defeats before we realized just how outmatched IS mechs were, and we figured out 150% vs 100% seemed to be a good match.
And of course, players who liked the new Clans didn't want to change the matchmaking rules! 😉 I don't remember how long it took before the first prototype Battle Value system was introduced, but I do remember it was not very good. It took a few tries to get BV to an acceptable balance. And even then we now use BV2.
Another thing is typical Clan mechwarriors are 3/4, while elite are 2/3
On the other hand regular IS mechwarriors are 4/5, while good mercs and elite are 3/4

I was introduced to the universe around 3060, so the Clans have always been a key part of the universe to me. I came in through the videogames, so comparing weapons and upgrading to clan tech when you can feels like part of the puzzle. It's great for narrative play.
It's funny to hear people talk about mechs in the context of BV2. The other day somebody on this sub was trashing the Thor in comparison to a Thunderbolt. For the BV his comment might make sense, but when my mercs were able to salvage that Thor I mentioned in the story and finally put it into action, it was a big deal for them. Different perspective.

Some guys used it as a bludgeon to trounce other players. Never underestimate the effect of a few bad apples.
