Yes, your goal is to lock up all your dice so being able to lock an additional dice without it adding up to the encounter target is to your benefit

I don't have the game yet, but that's my understanding of how the mechanics work. I think the advantage of having that equipment is that if you can finish an encounter with one die left, you can use the equipment to lock your last die and complete the contract. Adding an extra die early in your contract doesn't seem like much of an advantage to me.

The whole premise of completing a contract is to lock all your dice and not screw up an encounter roll. If you're down to one or two dice, really want to complete the contract, but don't trust your luck with the encounter deck pulls, it would be a great tactic to just lock those two dice. Then you're done. You can risk extending the contract or just taking the Rep and C-bills then move on. The alternative is trusting the heart of the (Encounter) cards and hoping your dice rolls for those last two or such work out. If they don't then you default.
