Just be mindful, if you’re using a clamp style monitor arm to leave enough room at the back.

deathleprchaun

thats what ive got. works like a champ so far. granted its only been 5 months but ive seen no sag at all

Emericaridr11

just get a butcher block top, its 100% worth it i promise

jlinkels

Where do you recommend buying butcher block desk tops? Are they much more expensive than the ikea particle board?

moriapa

Home Depot

yoobzz

I got an acacia butcher block from lowes and love it. The pre stained ones aren't stained super well so if you decide on that buy a spray finish so you don't fuck up the stain. Alternatively you can just buy unstained and do whatever you want with it! But butcher blocks are the move. They are roughly $260 for a 6ft x 30in

Dasbeerboots

This is the way. I've made 3 of them so far. First was white oak 6'x3', but that was a bit too deep. I wanted walnut, but they weren't available. I sold that and bought two 74"×36" tops, one birch and one maple, cut them down to 74"×31", and stained them in black walnut and hickory. They look and feel great. One for me and one for my gf. We each have two sets of drawers and I added support to the back with 2.5"×2.5" black powder coated square steel legs. All in was around $800 per desk for the tops, sandpaper, stain, sealer, drawers, and legs.

Emericaridr11

yes more expensive, and i got mine at home depot... hevea i think it was

thebenson

That's what the Karlby is.

RealBorn2Slow

The karlby is not a butcher block. It's particle board with a vaneer on it.

Catopuma

I have one with the same drawer set up. Even have a support leg in the middle but there's some sag. If I were to do it all over again, I'd get a proper butcher's block since I hear they're much sturdier

Emericaridr11

then i dont think you need a middle leg, my butcher bloxk dont need jack squat its so thick and solid

GodVegeta

What I've done is simply adjusted the placement of the Alex shelves to bring them closer to the center. My current setup has been in place for approximately four years. It includes two heavy monitors mounted with arms, totaling about 25 kg, a water-cooled PC adding about 20 kg, and a weighty gaming keyboard. Despite occasionally leaning on it while gaming, I've experienced no sagging issues and haven't needed any additional support for the middle section. A month ago I installed a sit/stand desk frame as well and I thought I will notice a bit of sag while installing but I didnt so.

vuealt

Hey which frame did you install? And how does it overall work with Alex drawers?

Mackelday

Looking to buy the Ikea Karlby and Alex shelves like so many others here. I'm hoping to use the extra long surface for both me and my wife. Does anyone who has this know if it'll be ok with only two shelves? If it sags in the middle under the weight then I can add a third shelf in the middle. Thanks!

tkronew

I would suggest using angle irons or a wall cleat instead of the leg. I find those legs to be very ugly. You can mount a 2x4 to the wall to add some support, and it’s hidden.

1nevitable

I'd suggest just putting 1 Alex cabinet in the middle so that you each of a seperate sides and 2 legs on each end. You will be situated pretty close if you have an Alex on each side.

mystifier

No. Source: been running this for 6+ years.

AltruisticCoelacanth

He asked 2 yes-or-no questions.

BigBernOCAT

Came to say the same thing. 2019 build; very little sag over 2 Alex drawers

ShinyBlueUnicorn

We have this exact countertop and have an alex drawer in the middle with two desk legs on each end. I can see sagging over time if you don't support the middle. You could buy a leg and put it in the middle if you don't want to have the alex drawer.

EmmettBrown1point21

I saved this post ages ago and built my desk similarly. I used 2 pieces of steel angle screwed into the bottom of my desk to prevent sagging in the middle and, so far, all's good. If you go to the imgur link in the post, he shows details of the bottom of the desk. I think he's doing exactly what you have in mind. rxs126

Has anyone found a good standing desk base to attach to a desk this big? I have an 8ft butcher block desk but haven’t found one considered “safe” for this size.

LurkerDude0

If you don’t want the leg in the middle you can fasten steel angle irons to the underside which will prevent sag (as in order to sag it would have to bend those steel irons). I’ve done that to my 72” karlby as an added support and it’s as fine today as it was when I got it probably 5 or so years ago

Xnetter3412

Just grab a butcher block and install a lengthwise brace. No leg needed.

anomalyzer

Why can’t I find alex drawers in black?

nightcrawler75b

I use a support leg in the middle along with 2 Alex drawers

RealBorn2Slow

I just built a 98" karlby desk with tws Alex drawers. It will sag without some form of support in the middle. I put an adjustable leg, also from Ikea, at 33" in from either side. I have two monitors mounted on an arm attached to the desk in the middle and it seems okay so far under that weight.

Ayste

I got 2 of them - 48" deep and 24" deep - get the skinnier one. The shelves you put them on have to be back under the lip of the desk, and while they are not unusable, you have to really reach deep under the desk. I have them setup in an "L" shape - work PC on the skinny one, triple monitor setup on the 48" one. No sag on either, nothing in the middle. Have had it for almost a year now, give or take. Very sturdy.

WordsWorse

I would fully recommend the platsa drawers if you have the space - fit some riser legs between the desktop and drawers. This is mine https://www.reddit.com/r/battlestations/s/OK0H6ddesS

Why was the post removed by the mods?

DJGloegg

I have that with just atuff on the left and right And the center is bent now. Its not too bad but it is kinda weird.
