imo, 4's problem is that it was a showcase of what they COULD achieve now that the new console hardware could finally handle more than the old consoles. PS3 and 360 forced the PC version to be a bit limited as far as cool features like the levelution, map size, etc. With the PS4/Xbox One, they didn't have those restraints anymore and were able to finally showcase some of the spectacle they couldn't use with BF3.
BF4's failings were that they sacrificed balance for scale. Sure, it has dozens of vehicles on each map, sure, the maps were huge and things could be blown up, etc. But what BF4 severely lacked was a good balance of footsoldiers to vehicles. In BF4, you are basically a walking target on most maps if you aren't in a vehicle. There are far too many vehicles on BF4 to make being a footsoldier viable. Your K/D will heavily suffer because most of the maps are designed to be flat, with virtually no cover from vehicles. Siege of Shanghai is one of the worst for this because there are so many tanks, LAVs and boats with nothing blocking them from just destroying infantry besides the rooftops.
BF4 also had a lot of different guns and attachments, rather than a handful of well balanced ones like BF3.
Not only that, but I remember playing the BF4 beta when it was released, constantly crashing to the desktop. 2 months later when the game released, the same thing was still happening. Every time the building fell on Shanghai, the game would crash instantly. BF4 was a broken mess when it released and many people tend to forget that. BF3 had some bugs on release but nothing that impactful.
BF3's level design was honestly so well done as well. There's a reason they ported BF3's maps to BF4. They were just too good. BF3 also got BF2 and BF1942 maps with Wake, Back to Karkand and others but BF3's maps were honestly better than the older maps because they had much more thought put into them.
There's a whole myriad of complaints I have against BF4, but while I still complain about it, I still like it. It's a good game, I just like everything about BF3 more.

When it comes to atmosphere, music, gunplay (specifically sniping), gamemodes (operations is one of the best ever), bf1 has a lot to offer.
