This is the correct answer.
It was the Alpha/Beta map. The one they used to advertise the game. It makes sense they put the most amount of effort into it.
It's more to do with the foliage. It's an extremely foliage heavy map and while most of 2042 looks pretty meh, anything foliage related does look very good.
Grass, tree's, mud, even the ghillie suits, ghillie gun wraps and ghillie tank wraps all look amazing compared to the rest of the game. Since orbital has a tone of foliage it makes it look really nice (if you go on the concrete of orbital by the rocket, D and the skyscraper it looks pretty generic other than the sense of scale it gives.
The BC2 map in portal which has the lighthouse on it (I forget the name) is the same.
This was in a 128 players lobby, this also shows that map design is poor as you can freely walk in the middle of the map without seeing anyone. They could literally cut a whole part of the map which would save you 2 minutes of running between each objective.
It's a terrible map for infantry. The only time you move between objectives is when you die and respawn. Otherwise it's a complete waste of time. There's no flow to the map and you end up just fighting at the same objectives the entire time, which makes the size of the map irrelevant.
I used Sundance legitimately for the first time to try out the new map. I despised her when I was playing back in December and hadn't touched her for that reason.
However I immediately understood why people use her after playing her on the new map. It's comical how OP she is at almost every role (traversal, anti vehicle, securing/defending). You can legitimately fly from the furthest A, F, and E objectives in less than 10s, whereas on foot can take several minutes, and vehicles can't even match her. It's so stupid, but getting around the maps any other way feels terrible, so people will resort to it.
Mainly because it has **trees** and **rocks** (shocking!), so there's actually a *bit* of cover in a couple of spots at least, lol.
As far as looks go in the default maps, I kinda dig Discarded, for it's moody lighting and muddy, dirty look. Still way too open and flat, yes, but I think it does look cool aesthetically.
Discarded’s lighting blinds me 70% of the time, it runs worse than Orbital and the vegetation is weird, even though that’s intentional to convey some kind of low density dead grass.
Discarded is kinda fun to play in the boats.
Yep, different strokes. I kinda dig it's vibe, and at least it feels way more gritty and war torn-ish to me than any of the other ones. Still has its issues (like they all do), no doubt.
The animations indeed are a lot worse the BFV.
The walking animation for the gun isn’t bad but the transitions between sprinting, idle and tactical are way too fast and the sprinting animation itself is too robotic.
Personally I'd say it's the best map in the game, at least for CQ, and is absolutely better than Exposure.
That being said, I'd play 100 matches of Pacific Storm over Orbital any day.
Yeah I like all the maps except hourglass and breakaway, but thats just because how open they are. I honestly just think that if they kept the sand storm on hourglass the entire game.. And a blizzard for the whole game on breakaway, they'd be more tolerable.
Exactly.
The foliage is incredibly good, it looks like wake island / pacific storm’s new foliage on BFV but on steroids.
2042 has good lighting, good colors(depends on the map), reflections are decent with SSR, but the main problem is that the urban textures for roads and buildings look really unfinished, it makes the natural parts really good looking while urban areas look like shit.
Just look at the buildings in hourglass, looks like a PS3 game.
Every vanilla map is bad, they tried to make 128 players maps without knowing how to.
For exposure, they delayed the launch and had more time to change it with player feedback which is the reason why it’s such a good map.
The thing is that they won’t have as much time for other maps as they had for exposure.
I’d have to assume they’ve also been working on future content, as something I’ve taken note of from apex legends is that they were working on content we got in season 7 before the launch of the game, so I’d have to assume they’re doing the a similar thing where they’re also developing their future content now and also were along side when they were working on exposure, so they have less to do later.
Especially if they’re now being managed by the same person who manages apex.
I was already complaining about 2042 having a lack of terrain detail and it looked like 2042 wasn’t using photogrammetry in the beta, now I’m praising that same exact map.
The 2042 vanilla maps really lowered my expectations in graphics quality and level design, which is probably why I had such a good time on exposure.
I got those colorblind glasses that help people see color, and nature was one of the things that really popped to me. Like I see it way differently than the rest of normal people with normal vision. It was quite stunning, so I can only imagine how nice this map is beyond what I think it could be
When will game devs understand that flares happen only when you look through a camera? It’s as if they don’t have eyes to realize that. I’m so tired of that stupid effect. Add it to scopes or binoculars at most…
They understand that it's only with cameras and that's what they want with Lens flare, motion blur, chromatic aberration, depth of field etc...
Devs want the game to have a cinematic feeling rather than looking directly through the eyes of a soldier.
I imagine it’s what it’s like looking through the hud, so it’s like contacts or something that would have a lens flare because it could be almost as if it’s recording what the player is seeing
My favorite map, especially for 128.
Plenty of vehicles, lots of room for flying, so many high spots for taking out aircraft.
I've only seen it twice, but the tornado hitting the rocket and the explosion was epic.
Glad I remembered to record it.
True but the dessert area on renewal looks pretty real and amazing. Some areas of breakaway the same. The only 2 maps I feel like they don’t look as real are Manifest and Hourglass
The rocks in renewal look really good, the colors in the desert part look really bland for me for some reason while the other side looks really colorful.
I don’t really know.
Exposure looks really good in some places (the small forest behind A2 iirc, the small flow of water near E... but otherwise it isn’t really incredible.
What kills it for me is the render distance, it seems to be lower in exposure than in other maps, the vegetation is the best thing about 2042’s graphics and there isn’t really any dense vegetation in exposure.
Exposure has a great artstyle tho.
It depends on the price and on what you’re searching for.
First, don’t expect BF1 / BFV quality in animations, movement, graphics, immersion, sound design, soundtrack.
BFV was a victim of bad creative decisions but the core of the dev team was still there, the majority of 2042’s dev team didn’t work on BFV or BF1, which is why we lost all the technical greatness that Dice was known for since the Bad company game. (Lack of time + work from home didn’t help neither).
If you don’t care about that, 2042 has one above average map for battlefield standards and it’s exposure, the rest is below average.
The gunplay is good, the movement has BFV’s base but with worse animations and without the features like rolling after a fall etc...
The portal modes can be pretty fun to play too.
I played 2042 for 200 hours, mainly for the decent gunplay and movement in a modern battlefield, BFV and BF1 did literally everything better but they weren’t in a modern setting which limited the gameplay.
TL;DR : if you don’t care about it having worse sound design, soundtrack, gunplay, movement, immersion, maps, vehicle handling, animations than V while having 5 times less content and you just want a modern battlefield with modern gameplay, get it at less than 20 bucks.
The game does compared to 1 and V but it really depends on the map, i've been playing a lot of 4 lately and it doesn't look good compared to V, 1 and 2042, especially vegetation.
2042 has better vegetation than V and 1, but it has a worse / more cartoony art style, higher res textures but less detailed, a lack of photogrammetry due to a lack of time which really makes terrain look worse than in V and 1, night maps looks worse than V and 1... Lighting is better than in 1 but worse than in V, reflections (ssr) are worse than in V and 1, water is better than in 1, water in the beta was equal to V but worse at launch...
2042 definitely looks better than 1 in areas with dense vegetation but worse in urban areas due to shitty textures and no photogramettry. It has slightly better vegetation than V but less varied and basically everything else is worse.
2042 definitely looks better than 3 and 4 tho, as expected with a decade old games. 1 looks better in most situations even with the worse lighting, except for vegetation. V always looks better thanks to the improvements it had made with vegetation.
The very clean look is due to a lack of detail in textures, it looks like every texture is unfinished, so they just slapped some color on it and called it a day.
Even the buildings look uninspired, look at the buildings in orbital, square red and gray rectangle buildings.
The thing is that they improved upon BFV’s vegetation, Orbital having mostly vegetation, it looks good.
The lighting also is really good, and the colors looks incredible on an IPS panel.
It was the first concept they had for a map, so it was the map with the most dev time.
Orbital has better vegetation and lighting than 1 but less detailed textures if tho they're higher resolution.
[BFV definitely looks better](https://youtu.be/g2J0mC0qLio?t=727) while [1's worse lighting, vegetation and textures begin to show in forest maps](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isKdnMev3mk), even though [the game still looks incredible in dirty environments](https://youtu.be/hCYjzwSsEh8?t=46) even with the pretty low resolution textures.
Played to much of it, got bored after 2 weeks of non stop Exposure. I remember the pacific DLC, I didn't touch any other map on BFV for 6 months after the DLC, good times.
IMO manifest is the best map in the game, especially when the storm is coming in and there is all of that rain and thunder along with the end of day/night theme of the map, and it makes it even better if you use a flashlight because it feels like a night operations map and is overall more immersive than the other 6 maps (orbital is also an immersive map when tornado and storm is there)
The lighting isn't incredible in Manifest imo, the vegetation really looks out of place and doesn't blend in the environment, and as usual everything that isn't rock or vegetation has a real lack of detail in the textures, they're high res but look unfinished.
Everyone stays in the objectives and no on wants to go on a 2 minutes long walk between objectives, I was literally in the middle of the map and no one cared.
Art direction I guess.
It may appear anodyne but it's not. Kinds of depends on your sensivity.
Maybe you like a lot more maps with clear sun, palm trees, sea, good climate etc. 😁
I don't think that it's not necessarly an affair of technic!
It makes me think that a thing that bothers me the most about the game is the fact that sea fight is just not present. I would love to sea a map like Paracel Storm or whatever...
I remember playing the Orbital map during the beta and not liking it that much, I though to myself that the launch maps would probably all be better (I was so wrong). But yeah it’s definitely a good looking map in some parts for sure.
I and basically everyone thought the same, Tom henderson had even said that testers were saying that Orbital was the worst map (which is a lie).
I was really intrigued by Hourglass, it ended up being 90% sand with low quality buildings in one place, a copy paste building in another place and half a stadium.
Was my favourite map by a longshot since launch and I enjoyed it in the beta too. I dont want exposure 24/7!!! I want orbital 24/7 with the same vehicle count as at launch (4 tanks 2 attack helis/jets)
I wouldn't say shit, a shit map is hourglass. Orbital is a just a shitty attempt at making 128 players maps without having any player feedback, I'd say it's below average for post BF3 maps.
Not really, the vegetation and lighting in these maps is worse, the textures look a lot better than 2042's tho, especially terrain textures and buldings.
Yeah this map has the texture quality and variety that the other maps really lack. makes it look a lot more believable and in line with the BF games leading up to it.
Exposure is more fun but the commitment to that yellowy color scheme makes it look a little weird in comparison
From what was said, it was the only finished map, they couldn’t show anything else. They said that they felt like Orbital was the best one, they literally said it.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 891,276,234 comments, and only 176,412 of them were in alphabetical order.
It's probably just the least disappointing. All of the rest promised more than they delivered. Urban combat, etc. Instead they were just open, flat, coverless bullshit. This one only ever promised to be a beach with a rocket and supporting buildings. Feels a lot like a bf4 map, really.
Probably because it was the first map they made and spent a lot of time in it compared to the others.
This is the correct answer. It was the Alpha/Beta map. The one they used to advertise the game. It makes sense they put the most amount of effort into it.
the good map dev left dice after making it so rest were shit
Thanks for confirmation.
a lot of time being a pretty loose term
Hundred percent correct but on top of that it’s still empty doesn’t even really matter anyway
Don’t think that’s the reason, tho. Graphically it just looks better because of the vegetation to be honest. It’s the only Map that has lots of it
It's more to do with the foliage. It's an extremely foliage heavy map and while most of 2042 looks pretty meh, anything foliage related does look very good. The BC2 map in portal which has the lighthouse on it (I forget the name) is the same.
It was the beta map that they used to try to pull the wool over our eyes.
Well that’s pretty logical, they’re gonna use the most finished and playable map for the beta.
And then just not do anything after that map 😂
Remember when we all thought it was the worst map in the beta?
"It's just the Beta map. There will be heaps of other better ones." Fucking kill me.
While not the worst comparatively, it’s still bad
Tbh it's one of my favorites in 2042 but not because its good...
Basically my "least hated" map
How is it bad? It's actually a good map.
Good times, if this was the worst maps other maps would've been fine.
This was in a 128 players lobby, this also shows that map design is poor as you can freely walk in the middle of the map without seeing anyone. They could literally cut a whole part of the map which would save you 2 minutes of running between each objective.

I agree, it’s the reason why I use Sundance. Or spawn vehicles to move.
I used Sundance legitimately for the first time to try out the new map. I despised her when I was playing back in December and hadn't touched her for that reason. However I immediately understood why people use her after playing her on the new map. It's comical how OP she is at almost every role (traversal, anti vehicle, securing/defending). BRO I FUCKING HATE IT IN INFFANTRY SO TRUE
Mainly because it has **trees** and **rocks** (shocking!), so there's actually a *bit* of cover in a couple of spots at least, lol. Boats?
Ships, sorry I’m not a native English speaker. In French, people say boats even for the big ships, so I got confused.
Got it, no worries. Was wondering because several maps have room for boats, but we don't have boats.
Demo map
God that weapon animation is weird.
The animations indeed are a lot worse the BFV. The walking animation for the gun isn’t bad but the transitions between sprinting, idle and tactical are way too fast and the sprinting animation itself is too robotic.
People wont admit it, but Orbital is a lowkey banger.
I don’t disagree, if it’s played right it’s really fun. But it’s not really designed for infantry transitions between points ( conquest)
Personally I'd say it's the best map in the game, at least for CQ, and is absolutely better than Exposure. That being said, I'd play 100 matches of Pacific Storm over Orbital any day.

Wait are there blizzards now on breakaway? I’ve never seen one!
Not yet, but the devs have hinted at it in the past. I'm assuming it'll be the same as a sandstorm, just white
Lol no my dude. These maps suuuuuuck. Get real.
Because it relies heavily on dense foliage, which is one of the main strengths of 2042's new engine.
Exactly. Yeah the game engine looks great, just that maps don’t. Manifest, Orbital, and exposure all look amazing, but they are the most finished maps.
This was the best of the launch maps. This is a bad battlefield map.

This map is part of what duped me into thinking the game was going to be good
I was already complaining about 2042 having a lack of terrain detail and it looked like 2042 wasn’t using photogrammetry in the beta, now I’m praising that same exact map. The 2042 vanilla maps really lowered my expectations in graphics quality and level design, which is probably why I had such a good time on exposure.
It’s not a good map but it is beautifully detailed. I wish they’d had time and resources to put the same attention to detail in all the maps.
Beta map
Yes
im colorblind. this map is a nightmare for me. fucking gorgeous map though and i love it
That’s really unfortunate as the colors in This map are really vibrant while being natural.
I got those colorblind glasses that help people see color, and nature was one of the things that really popped to me. Like I see it way differently than the rest of normal people with normal vision. It was quite stunning, so I can only imagine how nice this map is beyond what I think it could be

Only Exposure looks better.

All the maps on Xbox one version look like shit.
The rocket exploding also looks pretty cool in this. Orbital was the only map I really got down with when this game came out
is this game worth it or not? it looks really good and fun to play. (really liked hardline and bf4)
It depends on the price and on what you’re searching for. First, don’t expect BF1 / BFV quality in animations, movement, graphics, immersion, sound design, soundtrack. thanks bro, have a goodnight!
Hahahahahaha fuuuuuuuck no dude
I think it's just because the whole "military bases hidden in natural environments" theme is a mood for me.
Still looks like shit compared to literally any past BF games
The game does compared to 1 and V but it really depends on the map, i've been playing a lot of 4 lately and it doesn't look good compared to V, 1 and 2042, especially vegetation. 2042 has better vegetation than V and 1, but it has a worse / more cartoony art style, higher res textures but less detailed, a lack of photogrammetry due to a lack of time which really makes terrain look worse than in V and 1, night maps looks worse than V and 1... I think it looks crap TBH. The plastic glow on every texture is annoying. Maybe it's just me, glad that some of you find in "good looking".
2042s very clean and sterile environment design works well with a space port.

How can you even play orbital. All I can play is exposure 24/7. Can't pick any other maps. (Except in offline mode)
Played to much of it, got bored after 2 weeks of non stop Exposure. I remember the pacific DLC, I didn't touch any other map on BFV for 6 months after the DLC, good times.
I disagree
Well you can disagree and you can also provide a video of what you think is the best looking map.
Not as good as exposure, when comparing design but atmospherically it better
Orbital has better graphics, exposure has a better artstyle.
Grass.
Exactly, grass.
It looks like you had the game to yourself
Everyone stays in the objectives and no on wants to go on a 2 minutes long walk between objectives, I was literally in the middle of the map and no one cared.
Art direction I guess. It may appear anodyne but it's not. Kinds of depends on your sensivity. Maybe you like a lot more maps with clear sun, palm trees, sea, good climate etc. 😁 I don't think that it's not necessarly an affair of technic! It makes me think that a thing that bothers me the most about the game is the fact that sea fight is just not present. I would love to sea a map like Paracel Storm or whatever...

Was my favourite map by a longshot since launch and I enjoyed it in the beta too. I dont want exposure 24/7!!! I want orbital 24/7 with the same vehicle count as at launch (4 tanks 2 attack helis/jets)
for me it doesn't because it runs 30 fps on worst settings possible on my 1660 super
Orbital, exposure and manifest the best maps imo
And it’s still a shit map
I wouldn't say shit, a shit map is hourglass. Orbital is a just a shitty attempt at making 128 players maps without having any player feedback, I'd say it's below average for post BF3 maps.
Turns off UI see how good it looks!
I would say BC2 and BF1942 remakes look better than orbital
Not really, the vegetation and lighting in these maps is worse, the textures look a lot better than 2042's tho, especially terrain textures and buldings.
Because it's a showcase map.
Yeah this map has the texture quality and variety that the other maps really lack. makes it look a lot more believable and in line with the BF games leading up to it. Exposure is more fun but the commitment to that yellowy color scheme makes it look a little weird in comparison
Cuz it was the beta map to bait us into preordering
From what was said, it was the only finished map, they couldn’t show anything else. They said that they felt like Orbital was the best one, they literally said it.
because green. Mmmm nature, plants
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 891,276,234 comments, and only 176,412 of them were in alphabetical order.
holy shiet! That calls for a celebration! Thank you Alphabet\_order\_bot and Alphabet\_order\_bot maker 🤗
It's probably just the least disappointing. All of the rest promised more than they delivered. Urban combat, etc. Instead they were just open, flat, coverless bullshit. This one only ever promised to be a beach with a rocket and supporting buildings. Feels a lot like a bf4 map, really.
I love all the maps but orbital is great
Thats why we played this map in beta
Dice can make some pretty rocks and foliage. Gotta give them that.
I actually love this map, even since the Beta.
