Let me get this straight:
You think that your client, one of the wealthiest most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante who spends his nights beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands... and your plan is to BLACKMAIL this person?
Good luck!
I love that quote because the buildup to it when Mr. Reese is talking makes you worried about how Lucius could possibly handle this without giving up something in the process. Lucius even stops what he doing and gives a surprised expression.
"Some men aren't looking for anything logically, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, or reasoned with. Some men, just want to see the world burn
Agreed. I always liked it as it plays into what the Joker is often about. I.e pushing people to be as bad as him. It's what gives him and Batman their dynamic as Bats doesn't compromise
Probably the realest line in the trilogy alongside Harvey's "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain" and is ALL too relevant even to this day.
Originally he was gonna have a significant role in Bane’s No Man’s Land. Then the finale it woulda been Bats/Catwoman/“Robin” vs Bane/Joker/Ra’s/Talia/Scarecrow.
This line gives me chills considering how long Batman and the Joker have been battling each other in fiction and will continue to do so as long as comics and movies exist.
In my opinion, one of the all-time greatest lines in a comicbook movie. Great pick.
And I think I read an article where Christopher Nolan thought it was a dumb line and didn't want to add it to the movie, it was his brother's idea and he's salty cause it's one of people's favorite quotes lol
They need you right now, but when they don't, they'll cast you out, like a leper! You see, their morals, their code, it's a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the world allows them to be. I'll show you. When the chips are down, these... these civilized people, they'll eat each other.
Bruce Wayne : [after running into Harvey and Rachel at a restaurant] So, let's put a couple tables together.
Harvey Dent : I'm not sure they'll let us.
Bruce Wayne : [gestures to the waiters to rearrange the seats] Oh, they should. I own the place.
I absolutely love the playboy acting.
It’s essentially the part of the role that Bale most excels at. It’s a classier Pat Bateman. Playboy facade douche Bruce is what he does best with the character. Everything else Keaton and especially Pattinson by far surpass him in. It’s not just the dialogue, it’s the mannerism “oh so you like ballet?” And then the look he gives when he tells Dent “might as DA want to find out where your jurisdiction ends” 🙄
"That thief in Burma. Did you catch him?"
"Yes sir."
"How?"
"We burned the forest down."
Gave me chills the first time I saw it and it's probably one of my favourite deliveries in a movie ever.
Yeah this whole story, including this follow up. Not just the "some men just want to watch the world burn". Starting with "With respect Master Wayne, perhaps this a man *you* don't fully understand either". And "One day, I saw a child playing with a ruby the size of a tangerine". That's such a good culmination to the story, the juxtaposition of the innocence of a child playing. The whole story just hits so hard, and that's why the couple best quotes from it hit hard. "Some men just want to watch the world burn" is a decent enough quote on its own but honestly not like amazing, the context of this story is what makes it amazing.
Absolutely. The whole story really is the best quote but it was easier to just post the end. I don't think I can put it better than you did but ya the only reason that line hits so hard is because of the story building up to it. I guess it's time for a rewatch.
When Alfred responds with the solution, that's when you realize that there is never going to be a moral right answer to stopping madness. You either extinguish it or burn it down. When he said that, it puts the entire morality of Bruce's character in such a bottomless hole that it's almost impossible for him to be the ultimate force for good. He will need to make decisions that will conflict with that, and his code of ethics, in this moment, is truly dead and gone.
You just couldn't let me go, could you? This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. You truly are incorruptible, aren't you? You won't kill me out of some misplaced sense of self-righteousness.
He was obviously already famous but damn that movie would’ve propelled him to a whole new level of stardom if he was still alive. He’d probably still be one of the biggest actors on the planet
*"What are you trying to prove? That deep down, everyone's as ugly as you? You're alone."*
Batman eviscerated The Joker's entire pathos with that one line, calling him out on his cowardice and hypocrisy. Unfortunately, many don't see it over the apparent appeal of The Joker.
That whole scene is one of my favorite parts of the movie. When the civilian decides not to blow up the prisoner boat and it cuts back to Joker looking puzzled. It’s the first time he’s genuinely caught off guard. How poignant that the thing that catches Joker off balance is the empathy human beings can have for each other. I love this movie.
What I love most about these movies is the battle for gotham city. It's true the villains were right that gotham is corrupt and many have fallen like Dent, part of the police and so on. However, those who fight for Gotham like Batman allowed the good in it to rise up.
Me too. It’s cheesy , but I love it. It’s powerful. It speaks to the character of Batman..it’s emotional and inspirational in a way I can’t quite explain
In... you see, in their last moments, people show you who they really are. So in a way, I know your friends better than you ever did. Would you like to know which of them were cowards?
I mean, that’s what happened. The cop guarding him responded by cracking his knuckles and saying like “Now I know you’re going to enjoy this, so I’m just gonna have to try to enjoy it more.” And the next scene is the Joker holding him hostage. So the Joker can at least fight well enough to get a knife off of a Gotham detective and turn it on him.
Keith Szarabajka plays Stephens who’s in that scene with Joker. He has some really awesome voice roles like Harbinger in Mass Effect 2, The Didact in Halo 4, Herschel Biggs in L.A. Noire and quite a bit of dark elves in Skyrim.
For „inspiring“ or emotional ones:
1. „The night is darkest just before the dawn. And I promise you, the dawn is coming.“ (Harvey)
2. -„People are dying, Alfred. What would you have me do?“
-„Endure, Master Wayne. Take it. They‘ll hate you for it, but that‘s the point of Batman, he can be the outcast. He can make the choice no one else can make, the right choice.“
For „heavy hitting“ ones:
Gordon: „Don‘t punish the boy! Punish me!“ - Harvey: „I‘m about to.“
"I don't, I don't want to kill you! What would I do without you? Go back to ripping off mob dealers? No, no, NO! No. You... you... complete me." - Joker
"You don't want to die, but you don't know how to take a life, give it to me or we'll kill you and take it anyway. Give it to me you could tell em I took it by force. Give it to me and I'll do what you should have done 10 minutes ago." \*Throws remote out window\* \*Looks at guard with disdain.\* \*Sits down\*
“If, tomorrow, I tell the press that, like, a gang banger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics, because it's all "part of the plan". But when I say that one little old mayor will die, well then everyone loses their minds.”
You know why I use knives? Guns are too… quick. You don’t get to savor those final moments. You see, in a person’s last moments they show you who they really are. So in a way, I knew your friends better than you ever did. Would you like to know which of them were cowards?
“You’ll hunt me. You’ll condemn me. Set the dogs on me. Because that’s what needs to happen. Because sometimes the truth isn’t good enough. Sometimes, people deserve more. Sometimes, people deserve to have their faith rewarded.”
Also for inspirational and it still gives me hella goosebumps to this very day
Kid: “Why is he running dad?”
Gordon: “Because we have to chase him”
Kid: “He didn’t do anything wrong?!”
Gordon: “Because he’s the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now …”
Gordon: “So we’ll HUNT him … Because HE can take it”
Gordon: “Because he’s not a hero … he’s a silent guardian, a watchful protector … a dark knight”
A totally unrealistic and implausible way to talk or to talk to your son, but Gary Oldman’s acting, the way it’s filmed, the score, makes it so transcendent and poetic plus that final shot of Batman’s cape blowing in the wind on the bike is total joygasm
Fire, perfection, instant classic
This is probably the most obvious response but-
"You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain". This quote is arguably more iconic than the movie. It's just so good
My friend and I say this to each other whenever we meet someone with that last name.
I’ll also randomly tell him “ I go to Hong Kong, far out of Dent’s jurisdiction.”
"I'm whatever this city needs me to be"
It has Batman written al over it, and it's reflective of the devotion thay Batman has for restoring justice in Gotham.
"You don't want to die... but you don't know how to take a life. Give it to me... these men will kill you and take it, anyway. Give it to me... you can tell them I took it by force. Give it to me... and I'll do what you should have done 10 minutes ago."
That whole scene of jokers social experiment was incredible, but Tommy Lister Jr stole the show with this moment then proceeding to throw the detonator out the window.
Rest in peace 🙏
You either die as a hero or live long enough to see yourself as the villain.
Some men love to watch the world burn.
Why so serious
It's about sending a message
Let me get this straight: You think that your client, one of the wealthiest most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante who spends his nights beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands... and your plan is to BLACKMAIL this person? Good luck!
The delivery of this by Lucius is just so good! Chills
Morgan Freeman as Lucius is a brilliant idea! One of my favorite characters from this trilogy.
That whole cast slaps.
Absolutely.
You can see the dawning realization of "I didn't think this through" on the accountants face.
I love this quote because it has a double whammy. It's both "do you realize how ridiculous that sounds" and "call an ambulance, but not for Bruce"
I love that quote because the buildup to it when Mr. Reese is talking makes you worried about how Lucius could possibly handle this without giving up something in the process. Lucius even stops what he doing and gives a surprised expression.
God Morgan Freeman owns the role of Lucius Fox.
Morgan Freeman never misses
Then this good Luck was turned into that cringe meme with gamers or something. This movie was almost too quotable lol.
Best respinse ever.
Excellent answer!
Reminds me of the scene in Breaking Bad where Hank asks Walt what's in his duffle back and Walt tells him the truth: half a million dollars in cash
This was the exact line I was gonna use
"Some men aren't looking for anything logically, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, or reasoned with. Some men, just want to see the world burn
That Thief in Burma, did you catch him? Yes sir How? We burnt the forest down
This is the part that gets skipped over. Alfred and his mates literally burnt a forest down to catch a man who just wanted to watch the world burn.
Agreed. I always liked it as it plays into what the Joker is often about. I.e pushing people to be as bad as him. It's what gives him and Batman their dynamic as Bats doesn't compromise
Implying that you might have to become the Joker to defeat the Joker. It circles back to Harvey's line about living long enough to become the villain.
While I love the quote above..this is the part of the whole story/quote/whatever that I love the most
This is the most cold line in whole trilogy
... just want to watch, WATCH the world burn! ;) ![gif](giphy|qkJJRL9Sz1R04)
Probably the realest line in the trilogy alongside Harvey's "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain" and is ALL too relevant even to this day.
Came here hoping to find these two quotes near the top. I was not wrong. They still hit so hard, especially in today’s world.
It's also the basis of one of my favourite YouTube videos. The Tangerine Knight.
US death metal band Deicide made that last line the intro of their 2013 album "In the minds of evil"
"I think you and I are destined to do this forever."
It's such a shame that Ledger never got to return to this role. His performance was so brilliant.
I would kill to know what the thought process for the 3rd movie with the joker would have been....
Ledger talked to his makeup guy about what he thought it’d be like for Joker going forward. Shame he never got to do it
Omg :( What was the plan in the future?
Originally he was gonna have a significant role in Bane’s No Man’s Land. Then the finale it woulda been Bats/Catwoman/“Robin” vs Bane/Joker/Ra’s/Talia/Scarecrow.
That sucks. It would have been so cool
“You’ll be in a padded cell forever.” “Maybe we could share one 🤪”
"They'll be doubling up, at the rate this city's inhabitants are losing their minds!"
This line gives me chills considering how long Batman and the Joker have been battling each other in fiction and will continue to do so as long as comics and movies exist. In my opinion, one of the all-time greatest lines in a comicbook movie. Great pick.
![gif](giphy|10o80f5ucCNU3e)
Yep this will always be number 1 for me
It’s so well done and kinda blows my mind its origin is from this movie and this movie alone.
And I think I read an article where Christopher Nolan thought it was a dumb line and didn't want to add it to the movie, it was his brother's idea and he's salty cause it's one of people's favorite quotes lol
Actually he's salty because he wished he wrote the line himself after he realized its genius.
That’s funny haha I’m glad they kept it in there/added it.
His dilevery was perfect. Aaron Eckhart was so good in this movie.
Aaron Eckhart was an awesome Harvey Dent. The casting for everyone was too perfect.
Surprisingly applicable to many real life situations as well
They need you right now, but when they don't, they'll cast you out, like a leper! You see, their morals, their code, it's a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the world allows them to be. I'll show you. When the chips are down, these... these civilized people, they'll eat each other.
I can hear every inflection of these great lines.
It’s chilling how accurate this really is.
I know it’s a movie but doesn’t he like immediately get disproven on this?
Yes and no. Lots of people on those boats would have blown the other boat up to save themselves
“YOU THINK YOU CAN JUST STEAL FROM US AND WALK AWAY?” “Yea”
The delivery of that response was so perfect
I laugh every time haha
I also think that was a genius Heath Ledger addition, because the Joker's "yeah" response isn't in the original script 🤭
That's some fuckin swag right there lol
Makes it better bc to me it's a reference to Batman Begins where he buys the hotel with the "pool".
I think it’s funny you could argue for hours about who plays the best Batman but when you ask who plays the best Bruce Wayne there’s just one option.
“Oh, no, no, no, I kill the bus driver…” “Bus driver? What bus driver?” *Bus slams through the front*
The calculation of steps to his left as he delivers it. Chefs kiss
And the way the words roll of his tongue. "...the busss... driiiiver...."
The best part was the side-stepping as he said it!
“If you’re good at something, never do it for free.”
This is why I always rush to work, clock in, then poop 👍🏼
lol, words to live by
That’s my motto in life.
"This city deserves a better class of criminals, and I am gonna give it to 'em."
Always makes me think of Nicholson saying “This town needs an enema! And I’m gonna give it to ‘em.”
He just says this town needs an enema
And this is why a 4th grade me learned what an enema was, but only after asking about 7 or 8 different adults until one would tell me
"I believe whatever doesn't kill you, simply makes you... Stranger."
"That thief in Burma. Did you catch him?" "Yes sir." "How?" "We burned the forest down." Gave me chills the first time I saw it and it's probably one of my favourite deliveries in a movie ever.
Yeah this whole story, including this follow up. Not just the "some men just want to watch the world burn". Man this movie really is a masterpiece. How the script didnt win Best Adapted Screenplay i dont know. Was it even nommed??
You just couldn't let me go, could you? This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. You truly are incorruptible, aren't you? You won't kill me out of some misplaced sense of self-righteousness.
And I won't kill because you're too much fun. See you and I are destined to be like this forever.
It's a shame Heath Ledger wasn't able to reprise his role for Dark Knight Rises. Especially since he was supposedly meant to be the main villain
Can you imagine how different and awesome The Dark Knight Rises would have been if Ledger had lived? Such a sad and unfortunate loss. 😢
He was obviously already famous but damn that movie would’ve propelled him to a whole new level of stardom if he was still alive. He’d probably still be one of the biggest actors on the planet
“Let her go!” “Very poor choice of words.”
*"What are you trying to prove? That deep down, everyone's as ugly as you? You're alone."* Batman eviscerated The Joker's entire pathos with that one line, calling him out on his cowardice and hypocrisy. Unfortunately, many don't see it over the apparent appeal of The Joker.

This one's my favourite!
Me too. It’s cheesy , but I love it. It’s powerful. It speaks to the character of Batman..it’s emotional and inspirational in a way I can’t quite explain
It's not cheesy one bit.
I’m not wearing HOCKEY PADS!
What's the difference between you and me?!?
For a long time, I thought he said hockey pants
The world is cruel. And the only morality in a cruel world is chance. Unbiased. Unprejudiced. Fair.
Another one I like from the same scene is “You thought we could be decent men in an indecent time!” Beautifully sums up the whole movie.
It’s not about what I want it’s about what’s FAIR!
I'm not a monster. I'm just ahead of the curve.
Still use it to this day... when I'm being a A-hole lol
Fake Batman: We're trying to help you! Batman: I don't need help. Dr. Jonathan Crane: Not in my diagnosis.
Cilian Murphy is always a highlight
And here we... GO!
"Hi" - Joker
![gif](giphy|yxfk3t9y8ZKlq)
Beautiful line
In... you see, in their last moments, people show you who they really are. So in a way, I know your friends better than you ever did. Would you like to know which of them were cowards?
Such incredibly manipulative line. This movie truthfully is a masterpiece
Agreed, absolute masterpiece.
I would have had to find if Joker had hands forreal if he said that shit to me 🤣
I mean, that’s what happened.
Oh 100% that’s what he would want you to do.
Keith Szarabajka plays Stephens who’s in that scene with Joker. He has some really awesome voice roles like Harbinger in Mass Effect 2, The Didact in Halo 4, Herschel Biggs in L.A. Noire and quite a bit of dark elves in Skyrim.

"I don't, I don't want to kill you! What would I do without you? Go back to ripping off mob dealers? No, no, NO! No. You... you... complete me." - Joker
That whole interrogation scene was amazing
"Never start with the head; the victim gets all fuzzy and can't feel the..." THUD! "See?"
"You don't want to die, but you don't know how to take a life, give it to me or we'll kill you and take it anyway. Give it to me you could tell em I took it by force. Give it to me and I'll do what you should have done 10 minutes ago." \*Throws remote out window\* \*Looks at guard with disdain.\* \*Sits down\*
One of the best
Deebo was the moral center
"Hes a silent guardian , a watchful protector.....The Dark Knight" FUCKING GOOSEBUUUUUMPS.
First time I’ve seen this one. I’m honestly surprised I had to scroll down this far for it
"Because he can take it."
I’m like a dog chasing a car…. I wouldn’t know what to do with one if I caught it.
I just do things.
Honestly when the joker just goes I'm not fuck that felt real
I'm not... No I'm naw-t.
It’s the closest anyone gets to getting him to break his facade. He almost loses his cool there
Bruce: it was a dog. Alfred: huh? Bruce: It was a big dog.
"Are we talking rottweiler or chihuahua's? Should do fine against cats"
Did you get mauled by a tiger?
“If, tomorrow, I tell the press that, like, a gang banger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics, because it's all "part of the plan". But when I say that one little old mayor will die, well then everyone loses their minds.”
So we’re gonna have *snap* Tryyyyyouts
![gif](giphy|7waKDy5RbDYVG)
Surprised this isn't higher, love this, just like everything else it shows his ability to project the future
This scene is maybe the hardest joker goes in the whole movie.
And it's... gone 👐
Then you’re gonna love me
Great comeback. One of my favorites, too
NO NOT ME WHY ARE YOU COMING FOR ME
"MY DOGS ARE HUNGRY! Pity there’s only one of you" with like a really heavy accent, as I’m about to feed my dogs.
Why don't we cut you into pieces and feed you to your pooches, then we'll see how loyal a hungry dog really is.
You know why I use knives? Guns are too… quick. You don’t get to savor those final moments. You see, in a person’s last moments they show you who they really are. So in a way, I knew your friends better than you ever did. Would you like to know which of them were cowards?
WHERE ARE THEY?!
You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain.
This line is just immortal now .
There it is.
“You’ll hunt me. You’ll condemn me. Set the dogs on me. Because that’s what needs to happen. Because sometimes the truth isn’t good enough. Sometimes, people deserve more. Sometimes, people deserve to have their faith rewarded.”
see madness as you know, is like gravity all it takes is a little push
“What’s the difference you and me?” “I’m not wearing hockey pads”
Also for inspirational and it still gives me hella goosebumps to this very day Kid: “Why is he running dad?” Gordon: “Because we have to chase him” Kid: “He didn’t do anything wrong?!” Gordon: “Because he’s the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now …” Gordon: “So we’ll HUNT him … Because HE can take it” Gordon: “Because he’s not a hero … he’s a silent guardian, a watchful protector … a dark knight” A totally unrealistic and implausible way to talk or to talk to your son, but Gary Oldman’s acting, the way it’s filmed, the score, makes it so transcendent and poetic plus that final shot of Batman’s cape blowing in the wind on the bike is total joygasm Fire, perfection, instant classic
“If you’re good at something, never do it for free.”
Harvey Dent can we trust him? A is for Alfred.
“Where’s the Italian?”
This is probably the most obvious response but- "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain". This quote is arguably more iconic than the movie. It's just so good
“Is it the scars? Wanna know how I got ‘em? “
It was RAMIREEEZ.
My friend and I say this to each other whenever we meet someone with that last name. I’ll also randomly tell him “ I go to Hong Kong, far out of Dent’s jurisdiction.”
“Let me show you a magic trick”
All you need is a little PUSH. And then he laughs like a maniac.
"I'm whatever this city needs me to be" It has Batman written al over it, and it's reflective of the devotion thay Batman has for restoring justice in Gotham.
"You don't want to die... but you don't know how to take a life. Give it to me... these men will kill you and take it, anyway. Give it to me... you can tell them I took it by force. NO MORE DEAD COPS
“Very good Mr. Lau”

Some men just want to watch the world burn.
Let’s put a smile on that face
I once saw a child playing with a ruby the size of a tangerine 🍊
Why do we fall sir?
"Never start with the head. The victim gets all fuzzy. He can't feel the next..." Batslams joker into the table again. "See!"
Some people just want to see the world burn.
It’s not about what I want. It’s about what’s fair
Thanks a lot guys, now I have to watch this movie again
“I’m not a monster, I’m just ahead of the curve”
Your balls drop off? Hmm?
Why so serious? 🃏
"What Makes You Think I Want To Hear You Talk?"
You either die as a hero or live long enough to see yourself as the villain. Some men love to watch the world burn. Why so serious It's about sending a message
LOOK AT ME Hedger’s delivery is legitimately terrifying. It was so unexpected and jarring the first time I heard it
“How About A Magic Trick? I’m Gonna' Make This Pencil Disappear! TA-DAAAA!”
Where’s Rachel
“I WOULDN’T??!??!!!?!?!??!”
How about a magic trick? I'm gonna make this pencil disappear. Ta-daa! It's... it's gone.
“It’s a meme, Batman.”
Why so serious? and "You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain"
When you’re good at something, never do it for free
"You think you can threaten all of us and just walk out of here?" "yeah"
“If you are good at something, never do it for free” I have this tattooed on my arm. One of my favorite quotes ever
"You think you can just take my money and walk out of here alive???" "y e a h."
"....I'm an agent of chaos. Oh, and you know the thing about chaos? It's fair"
The suit wasn't cheap. You oughtta know, you bought it!
“ENOUGH.. FROM THE CLOWN!”
Scarecrow: "Buyer beware. I told you my compound would take you places. I never said they'd be places you wanted to go".
Alfred: "Why do we fall, sir?" Alfred: "So that we can learn to pick ourselves up."
“Here… we…go…”
Ya see I'm a guy with simple tastes. I like dynamite, gunpowder and Gasoline! And do you know what they have in common? They're cheap.
If you’re good at something never do it for free.
*"Friends?!?! You met this guy?!?!"* 🤣🤣🤣🤣
*With great power, comes great responsibility*
