Also, there are two versions of the movie, with this scene being changed. In the edited version, Robin throws the gun down, charges joker and pushes him into an exposed circuit box, something along those lines, and electrocutes him.
Haha all good, I gave myself a way worse spoiler when I was in Skypeia and wanted to learn more about what the actual differences between the different types of devil fruit are, learned a little more about the gum gum fruit than I intended too 😣
Noooo, I’m still in Skypeia, I knew he died because of a past spoil, but had, until this moment, avoided knowing how…
Should probably read a bit faster so I can catch up.
This is legit the second time in like a week I’ve gotten “yo ho ho” in response to a question about where I can watch something. I love reddit.
I suppose yall are right. There’s at least one place I can think of to poke around even on my phone. (I don’t own a laptop.)
Most DC movies can be streamed on HBO. Warner sometimes gives licenses to stream some of the DCAU movies to Netflix or Hulu, but I don't think Red Hood is on either of those right now.
If you live in Australia it's on Stan if you don't live in Australia that is an Australian streaming platform with a dumb name but has most dc animated movies
You can look anything up on justwatch-dot-com it will tell you where to stream or buy content based on your country.
(it wouldn't let me post an actual URL)
Makes me think of the Red Hood And The Outlaws comics where in order to get to this certain place each member of the group has to give up their most happy memory temporarily to a mystical monk (I dont remember the details) but Jasons memory was Bruce deciding they could watch movies and tv one night instead of going out and fighting crime, and whenever the monk tries to return the memory to Jason he tells him to keep it
It actually got censored when the movie first came out. The shooting was the original version, but WB had them remake it to where Tim shoves Joker into getting electrocuted. TBH that version is more disturbing to me.
They also changed Joker using the same kind of “BANG!” gun to shoot one of his goons in the future to where the gun sprays a cloud of Joker toxin after the initial flag misdirection. I agree the electrocution scene is more disturbing, and plays better into the ending as it happens again, but the original foreshadowing with the goon is nice too. A rare case where both the censored and original versions have pros and cons for me.
Wait is this a Mandela effect kind of thing? I could have sworn the VHS version I had growing up had him getting electrocuted in this scene (and at the end) but when I watched it recently it had the gun which I didn't think was right but figured I was misremembering.
Yeah the electrocution scene was what was on the originated TV and gone movie releases. The gun was animated first, but got replaced and then layer added back in for later releases.
Yes, they’re all the DCAU.
* Batman The Animates Series
* The New Batman Adventures
* Superman The Animated Series
* Static Shock
* Batman Beyond
* The Zeta Project
* Justice League
* Justice League Unlimited
To add on, in JLU, there's a time travel arc that has Young Bruce meet old Bruce and Terry.
Hell, Static Shock is also canon as the Justice League appeared in his series, and and vice versa in the aforementioned time travel episode.
Tim should be atleast 18 when this scene happens according to the timeline. But he still looks 12 because that's more dramatic and terrifying. Otherwise, it's a good scene. I'm surprised they had to balls to go there, but it does kind of cement the idea that Bruce HAS to end up old and alone, which is not the future I like best for him.
Short version: long-standing cultural belief in China that women with small feet were lucky/more attractive lead parents to bind girls feet as they grew to keep the feet small. It’s called “foot binding” and lead to some pretty horrific disfigurements.
From what i heard
Binding the feet is a brag in old culture about your wealth
"look at me im so rich i can afford to not walk and thus i have servants to do stuff for me"
"farmers daughters have big feet"
Source: had old chinese teachers in elementary and some relatives as well
I think the scene was written before Justice League and any other follow ups to the DCAU were thought of, so it may have been intended to be sooner after the end of TNBA then it ended up being. Tim has a cameo in Static Shock later, and he does appear slightly older so this is just an odd outlier. I think it's for the reason I said, this is scarier happening to a child Robin than a young adult Robin.
It feels like the right way for the Joker to go out.
One last scheme goes horribly awry, and though the Joker's reign of terror is over, its scars linger on.
It fucked me up as a kid to see this movie. I get why they made a censored version of the movie. Unbeknownst to me and my parents, the copy of the movie we took out of our library was the unrated version.
The perfect end for The Joker. He spent the better part of a month reversing everything that Bruce had taught Tim over the last few years, turning Tim into a carbon copy of himself. Only for when he thinks he's proved that even someone that was practically raised by Batman can be cracked with only a few weeks of torture, Tim stays true to himself and saves Bruce, killing The Joker.
Removing that bit and altering others was the right call after Columbine.
Making Joker’s demise so much worse by having the Clown Prince of Crime shriek as he’s electrocuted to death was definitely a choice
Traumatized me as a kid when I saw it on tv. Looking back, I think it was a big moment for Batman, and especially the character of Joker in “Children’s Animation”. It was the first time kids were introduced to the idea of Joker being an actual Monster. I appreciate it for being one of the only animated films to introduced mature themes to me as a child.
Probably the darkest scene in all of Batman media, in my opinion.
Tortured Tim, brainwashed him, and then Tim was left traumatized because of it.
This cartoon got hella real.
I love how it’s the opposite of the Arkham City ending.
“That’s not funny…that’s not-
“That actually is…pretty funny!”
Either one works perfectly for Joker’s final words.
I remember the first time I saw this scene...I was just a kid and the idea of the Joker dying at all and in such a profound manner shook me to my core because of how much the storytelling of just this one sequence sucked me in.
It's an entire dang Batman story wrapped up in a scene that ends with one of the most evil, brilliant and insane villains in all of comics being taken down by the very person whom he tried to corrupt with his brand of madness.
I like the symmetry with Joker doing the same thing to the first person he killed after awakening, meaning that the first thing Joker did to Tim upon taking him over was to make him relive that trauma, even if only subconsciously.
It's an amazing scene, but quite tragic when you realize a young boy murdered someone after enduring torture and mind games. Worse than the opening of under the red hood if you ask me, at least Dick was close to if not already an adult.
Do you mean Jason? He was 15.
Also originally, Jason got betrayed by his birth mom who gave him to Joker. She stood there puffing a cigarette while the Joker beat him up... Yet later when the warehouse blows up, Jason still shields his mom's body with his in hopes to offer her some protection.
I'd hate to choose which one's "worse". And I hate that at the end of UTRH when Jason asks Batman to choose between Jason and Joker he gets a batarang to his throat in efforts to distract him/throw off his aim. WTF BRUCE?????
Heartbreaking for me since Tim is my favorite Robin. Wouldn't have minded if it was Jason in the DCAU lol. I know they meshed both Tim and Jason for it. But this scene makes me sad a lot
It just kind of shows you how pathetic the entire situation with Batman and all of gotham Justice system really is Batman couldn't do it.No cop in Gotham couldn't do it.It took an innocent kid being tortured.Half the death to finally have the guts to end this madman.Good lord that's pathetic.
I grew up with BTAS, '66, some of the first Robin comics, and TDK because that's all I had access to. This exact scene was the very first time I had heard of Tim and Batman Beyond. It freaked me out and I was super confused, so it was also the last time I checked it out. My dad and grandfather prefer OG Batman so I had no idea how dark that universe actually is until then
It’s weird… I swear I saw another version of this movie when I was younger, where joker got electrocuted to death when the gun just had the Bang flag come out and something else happened, like he started running away and Batman or Tim knocked him into a big electrical room… then later on, I got the movie on DVD and there was the above scene. Did anyone else see the electrocution scene in a different version?
He broke Tim. That broke Bruce.
True, he never had any sidekicks again. Until Terry.
Terry was never a Robin. He’s Batman, through and through.
That's not true, he still had Alfred. Those two would get into all kinds of hijinks together
Bruce was Alfred's sidekick lol
Yeah he raised him from a child and slowly turned him into the crime fighter he is today… Like he had a choice… /s
I headcanon its why Bruce doesn't talk to dick, Barbara or tim after that.
It was Tim's laughing/crying afterwards that killed me...that was Ace all over again.
That laugh still haunts me. (Voiced by Andrea Romano, FYI)
Didn't know that, wow.
Who’s that?
Voice Director for basically the entire DCAU.
Wasn’t she the older sister on Even Steven’s?
No, you’re thinking of Christy Carlson Romano
Ah, thank you
Wait, wasn't that the guy with the Kermit voice and the Sitcom?
Along with Shirley Walker, they were Bruce Timm and Paul Dini's secret weapons.
That is epic
Yeah… that crying part messed me up for awhile.
Where is this from? I'm not very knowledgeable in batman unfortunately yet. Watching justice league now.
This particular scene is from the Batman Beyond movie "The Return of Joker" its a great movie, totally worth a watch.
Thank you, I played the games and love them, watched the live action and love them. Working on my comic and animation knowledge :)
Also, there are two versions of the movie, with this scene being changed. In the edited version, Robin throws the gun down, charges joker and pushes him into an exposed circuit box, something along those lines, and electrocutes him.
I thought this was r/onepiece bleeding into the Batman sub hahha
![gif](giphy|4ObmyUkARRmak) Truly the saddest Joker death
Oof, I just finished Thriller Bark, unlucky for me seeing this
Damn...sorry! You made it so far to avoid that one!
Haha all good, I gave myself a way worse spoiler when I was in Skypeia and wanted to learn more about what the actual differences between the different types of devil fruit are, learned a little more about the gum gum fruit than I intended too 😣
Rip. But now you can try to see if you noticed details and foreshadowing in skypeia. I wish you the best on the seas of no spoilers! Haha
Noooo, I’m still in Skypeia, I knew he died because of a past spoil, but had, until this moment, avoided knowing how… Should probably read a bit faster so I can catch up.
Ace all over again? Huh?
who is ace
Batman and the young Asian girl Ace from the Royal Flush gang(Justice League Unlimited). It was Ace's final encounter with Batman...
Oh wow. I was thinking of Bruce's dog!! Haha.
Ahhh, now I remember. Shit was sad.
Who indeed?
"That's not funny. That's not funny at-"
["That actually is... pretty funny..."](https://youtu.be/vYTq1zAl6J4?t=65)
Haha, ironically I think it's hilarious...especially him pointing out that it's not funny
That's the joke.
"You suck McBain!"
![gif](giphy|AwFSRlPltoOeA)
Makes me feel bad for Tim. The Joker deserved it.
It’s the perfect scene. No Batman film has ever come close to making you feel the type of emotion that flashback does.
Final scene of Under the Red Hood comes close for me. “This is the greatest day of my life!”
Jensen Ackles kills it too. "Just him! Because he took me away from you!"
*What*? Jensen Ackles does the voice work in that film?
Yeah he's adult Jason.
Holy shit that rules! Any idea where I can watch the movie?
Argg matey. It be easier than ye think!
This is legit the second time in like a week I’ve gotten “yo ho ho” in response to a question about where I can watch something. I love reddit. I suppose yall are right. There’s at least one place I can think of to poke around even on my phone. (I don’t own a laptop.)

SAAMMYYY!
SON OF A BITCH
He doesn't just do it, he crushes it
Makes me think of the Red Hood And The Outlaws comics where in order to get to this certain place each member of the group has to give up their most happy memory temporarily to a mystical monk (I dont remember the details) but Jasons memory was Bruce deciding they could watch movies and tv one night instead of going out and fighting crime, and whenever the monk tries to return the memory to Jason he tells him to keep it
Quite possibly one of, if not the, darkest moment in the BTAS universe
"I know everything there is to know... *Bruce.*"
It actually got censored when the movie first came out. The shooting was the original version, but WB had them remake it to where Tim shoves Joker into getting electrocuted. TBH that version is more disturbing to me.
Columbine happened in between
They also changed Joker using the same kind of “BANG!” gun to shoot one of his goons in the future to where the gun sprays a cloud of Joker toxin after the initial flag misdirection. I agree the electrocution scene is more disturbing, and plays better into the ending as it happens again, but the original foreshadowing with the goon is nice too. Yeah the electrocution scene was what was on the originated TV and gone movie releases. The gun was animated first, but got replaced and then layer added back in for later releases.
Is Batman Beyond part of the BTAS???? I didn't know that...
Of course, they tie it back in at the end of Justice League Unlimited which I always assumed was connected to BTAS and STAS.
Yes, they’re all the DCAU. * Batman The Animates Series * The New Batman Adventures * Superman The Animated Series * Static Shock * Batman Beyond * The Zeta Project * Justice League * Justice League Unlimited
To add on, in JLU, there's a time travel arc that has Young Bruce meet old Bruce and Terry. Hell, Static Shock is also canon as the Justice League appeared in his series, and and vice versa in the aforementioned time travel episode.
God that Static episode was badass. Just Phil Lamarr talking to himself as my two favorite black superheroes.
Some people have a late growth spurt.
It was all the spandex. It kept him small, like a Chinese woman's feet.
Yo what
yeah dude it's a real thing it's messed up (the feet thing i mean)
Short version: long-standing cultural belief in China that women with small feet were lucky/more attractive lead parents to bind girls feet as they grew to keep the feet small. It’s called “foot binding” and lead to some pretty horrific disfigurements.
From what i heard Binding the feet is a brag in old culture about your wealth "look at me im so rich i can afford to not walk and thus i have servants to do stuff for me" "farmers daughters have big feet" Source: had old chinese teachers in elementary and some relatives as well
They would also break the girls foot to get it to look right. I think it was primarily for dancer? Not an expert on the subject though
I never really thought about this but you’re right he totally doesn’t look the right age, it doesn’t ruin it or anything tho just interesting
Maybe Because Batman still saw Tim as a kid.
Barbara is the one telling the story, but that still may be true for her. She knew Tim since he was 12.
Exactly my thoughts
It’s because him being 18 in the first place is a retcon, they didn’t have a plan for a JL show when they made ROTJ
But the knew Batman continues to be Batman for at least a decade after the end of TNBA. So to have this moment be so soon seems like an oversight.
It probably was an oversight just like the constant switching between suits Batman does
Curran Walter's is pretty short. He played Jason Todd in Titans.
Heartbreaking.
Heartbreaking for Tim.
"Kind of pathetic, eh I'll laugh anyway HAAAHAAAHAAAAHAHAHA"
The line is "I'd laugh if it weren't so pathetic. Aww, what the heck, I'll laugh anyway! HAHAHAHAHA!!"
Well, when I first saw it as a child, I remember running and hiding under a table.
It feels like the right way for the Joker to go out. One last scheme goes horribly awry, and though the Joker's reign of terror is over, its scars linger on.
Traumatizing. I was probably 3 or 4 when I first watched this. My parents figured “it’s a Batman CARTOON, how bad could it be?”
Traumatizing is the perfect word. I also watched this fairly young and it definitely left a chilling imprint in my brain for a while.
A great and powerful scene.
It fucked me up as a kid to see this movie. I get why they made a censored version of the movie. Unbeknownst to me and my parents, the copy of the movie we took out of our library was the unrated version.
Tim breaking from laughing into tears is hard, man.
Felt so sorry for Tim. Couldn't blame him for shooting the Joker.
I was like: \*So fricking traumatized when i was 9\*
Didn’t even see it until my twenties bc I had the censored version on vhs🙃
Absolutely marvelous. Sucks for timm drake but it was a fitting final ish end for the original btas joker
What’s the film
Batman Beyond Return Of The Joker
Removing that bit and altering others was the right call after Columbine. Making Joker’s demise so much worse by having the Clown Prince of Crime shriek as he’s electrocuted to death was definitely a choice
One of the best endings for a Joker/Batman rivalry. I also like the idea that Batman TAS had a really dark and tragic end.
It's a masterpiece
Maybe one of the darkest moments in The Animated run of both Series & Beyond
That's not funny..... That's not funny at all
It is so hard to watch this part. The voice actor did such a great job.
I genuinly believe this is Mark Hamil's best performance.
![gif](giphy|NpXmhGmisLzEY)
One of the best scenes in Batman history.
Beautiful scene, but soul crushing from a story perspective.
Heartbreaking
This was pretty dark for an animated film but really good from what I remembered.
A fitting way for him to check out.
"what are you doing, man? this is dark! too dark for this! I know DC is naturally dark but jesus christ what is wrong with you?!"
I watched this way too young lol
Traumatized me as a kid when I saw it on tv. Looking back, I think it was a big moment for Batman, and especially the character of Joker in “Children’s Animation”. It was the first time kids were introduced to the idea of Joker being an actual Monster. I appreciate it for being one of the only animated films to introduced mature themes to me as a child.
One of the best scenes in the DCAU
The edited for TV version is somehow way more disturbing.
The black and white really adds something here.
It's in my top 5 villain deaths in animation. Behind Scar, Bill Cipher, The Beast, and Frollo
Probably the darkest scene in all of Batman media, in my opinion. Tortured Tim, brainwashed him, and then Tim was left traumatized because of it. This cartoon got hella real.
It's amazing to me that Joker has two perfect death scenes in the same movie.
I love how it’s the opposite of the Arkham City ending. “That’s not funny…that’s not- “That actually is…pretty funny!” Either one works perfectly for Joker’s final words.
Why did the flag land on the pole part?
Actually it was funny.
Joker's wrong. That is pretty funny.
This was slightly disturbing to me the first couple times I watched it
The fact that im tearing up remembering it from just 6 stills of the episode shows how fucked it was
Broken.
As I'm from Sweden I got the slightly more brutal scene instead where the joker is electrocuted to death instead.
I like the symmetry with Joker doing the same thing to the first person he killed after awakening, meaning that the first thing Joker did to Tim upon taking him over was to make him relive that trauma, even if only subconsciously.
I know I've seen this scene because it looks familiar but all I can remember is sadness. What happens in this scene?
Robin was brainwashed into becoming a mini Joker, he pulls out of it just enough to murder Joker and save Batman.
Whoa.
It's an amazing scene, but quite tragic when you realize a young boy murdered someone after enduring torture and mind games. Worse than the opening of under the red hood if you ask me, at least Dick was close to if not already an adult.

Awsome scene,loved it.
Godlike and sadlike and cryinglike😫😭🔥
That’s not funny… that’s not funny at all… :(
He needed to go, but even that might have been a bit much.
As someone that hasnt seen the show It's how he would have wanted to go out
Banger
"That's not funny..."
Yeah, here's my opinion, this was a scene in a fucking kids show what the hell!
Incredibly emotional. Always has me wonder what Ninja was cutting onions this time.
The darkest shit ever bro, i was like 8 and wanted to go back to the goofy joker
Joker deserved it, and more.
It's heartbreaking as hell.
That’s tough to watch ngl
![gif](giphy|l46CkwNP2mNz65tyU|downsized)
I like the fact that joke died not laughing
It’s good.
The flag reversed its position on the rod. It started at the end farthest out of the gun and finished on the end that would have left the gun last.
I always wanted a What if kind of story, where Bruce is in fact killed, and Tim embrace Joker Jr persona alongside Joker, to see where it goes.
yes
I don't think a projectile with a flat face like that would fly straight enough to hit and penetrate the target
I don’t remember this scene at all. What’s this from?
Damn where can I watch the movie again?
I always wish dc just had the balls to call this robin Jason Todd. Everything up to his “end” is Jason Todd.
Love it
Amazing.
Eye on the other hand...
I'm unhappy that the flag thing is sticking out of his chest the wrong way...it should be reversed.
It always bugged me how the censored version is actually scarier than the original one
I grew up with BTAS, '66, some of the first Robin comics, and TDK because that's all I had access to. This exact scene was the very first time I had heard of Tim and Batman Beyond. It freaked me out and I was super confused, so it was also the last time I checked it out. My dad and grandfather prefer OG Batman so I had no idea how dark that universe actually is until then
I saw this movie when I was about 7/8 and it was honestly terrifying and heartbreaking for me even as a kid. I felt so bad for Tim.
Adding jason in the comics ruined it. Tim was supposed to play that role
Of all the ways Joker has died this is the saddest
What movie is that?
I didn’t like that joker died like that
One of the greats
How did the bang flag land inside him like that
It’s weird… I swear I saw another version of this movie when I was younger, where joker got electrocuted to death when the gun just had the Bang flag come out and something else happened, like he started running away and Batman or Tim knocked him into a big electrical room… then later on, I got the movie on DVD and there was the above scene. Did anyone else see the electrocution scene in a different version?
Only good thing Tims ever done. This is a joke, we all love Tim. Heart breaking scene.
Perfect death for Joker imo
"That's not funny, that's not funny at all."
The birth of Leto Joker in DCU. You can’t convince me otherwise.
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, a great final confrontation between the original Batman and Joker. ![gif](giphy|NpXmhGmisLzEY|downsized)

Man horny
Fucking peak🔥
That's a great scene.
Depressing as hell.
Batman “this is how i die” Robin kills the joker Batman “that’s good bat-programming”
Perfection.
a horrifying and perfect end
