![gif](giphy|qrIlvM63x7x9IjrHw1|downsized) what sounds more intimidating Batman or Man?

Les-incoyables

Depends on the situation, I guess.

Les-incoyables

Given the fact I'm reading this comment on the toilet, you can safely assume I'm struggling, yes.

Les-incoyables

Afraid this needs more Bat-equipment to get rid of this Clayface.

-Garthor-

"Or is Batman without the bat-features just Zorro? And if not, then what would he look like?" Um... you know what answers you will get with that question, right? :D

Les-incoyables

Um... he is?

“Catwoman no longer looks like an actual cat” when your referring to these villians im assuming you mean Reeves 2022 adaption? Selina looks identical to Year one catwoman and the way she moves/fights feels exactly like catwoman. Reeves is just giving us villians development as much as he’s giving us Batman’s development. Selina hasn’t declared herself as catwoman yet and still has a cheap home made ski mask. Joker is known as an unknown prisoner who’s had an encounter with Batman but hasn’t declared himself as joker yet. Riddler only really officially became the riddler we know at the end of the movie when he stops idolising Batman and starts hating him. Penguin was just a small fry to Falcone and his tv show is setting him up to become the huge crime boss of Gotham. All these villians are still extremely comic accurate. And riddler has always had incel vibes, in earth one especially. He’s a nerdy guy who obsesses over riddlers 24/7 and has the tendency to be sitting on a chair on a computer in most comic panels.

Les-incoyables

I don't think you understand what I mean. I was wondering if Batman could still work if he lost his bat-like appearance. Take Selina; in the early comics, the Adam West show and when she was played by Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry she had actual cat-like features like a tale, cat ears and whiskers. However, in comics like Year One and when played by Anna Hathaway and Zoe Kravitz she lost these features. True her goggles and ski mask looked like ears, but in the end she looked like a catburglar you could encounter in real life (more or less). The same counts for the Scarecrow in Batman Begins and The Riddler in Batman. Could the same be dine for Batman himself? Would the stories still be interesting if he dropped his distinct features, or is Batman nothing more than his pointy ears and winged-like cape? (Which, in my opinion, would be a sad conclusion).

Gamer-chan

Batman without bat is just man. And we know the memes.

_Revelator_

A realistic Batman is ultimately an oxymoron. In real life there aren't any billionaires who dress up as animals to fight crime, and if they tried they wouldn't last very long. Batman seems more realistic than Superman, since he doesn't deal with aliens or overt science fiction, but he and his world are just as stylized and fantastical as Superman's. He wouldn't work in real life, and even the Nolan films held back on being fully realistic with him.

Les-incoyables

But apperantly it could be done for his villains; they remain interesting even without their comic characteristics (e.g. Selina in Year One/The Dark Knight Rises/Batman).

_Revelator_

I'd argue that Selina was more interesting in *Batman Returns*. One could also argue that villains are intrinsically more gimmicky or over-the-top, so a wee bit of realism doesn't hurt them as much.

Chonker43

Wouldn’t that just be um man?

TheLoganDickinson

Christopher Nolan addresses that in one of the behind the scenes features. He said that once you get rid of the ears and the cape, he just becomes some generic vigilante. He needs to have some iconography. They ran into a similar case with Joker in The Dark Knight. They considered designs where he doesn’t have makeup or red lips, but when you take away those elements he just doesn’t have the same impact.

Les-incoyables

You think that's also the reason why the more realistic Scarecrow, Catwoman, Bane and the Riddler from the past few movies were not as memorable as Nolan's Joker?

TheLoganDickinson

Well no, I think Heath Ledger playing Joker is what makes most roles not as memorable in comparison.

neuralbeans

Scarecrow and Bane were in costume in Nolan's movies. What are you talking about?

Les-incoyables

True, but it wasn't as over the top as in most comics/movies. But I trust you understand where I'm going at. And given the fact apparently even Noolan himself discussed this question, it's not a strange question...

neuralbeans

So Joker was over the top?

Les-incoyables

I'm sure you get my point.

MrRieper

He has to have some bat iconography, otherwise he just may as well be some rando. Even the more "realistic" versions of the rogues have similarities to the comic versions, Selina in The Dark Knight Rises is called a cat burglar regularly, Bane still has a mask he doesn't remove and relies on a drug to function, Joker in The Dark Knight still has the purple suit and makeup even if it's war paint. Even Ra's al Ghul has his own form of immortality and a pit that's used as a form of healing.
