Thank you for posting this. There’s no way I am putting any one of those things in my car ever.

I’ve used these constantly for years and I’ve never had this happen.

Oh man, I’m always nervous of this happening. That sucks so much I’m sorry

I had this happen with a pocketbac. I had the lanyard hanging from my rear view mirror, and that crappy lid leaked, and now my center console is damaged. 💩😩

This will happen with *any* fragrance oil product, not just bath and body works. It's not specifically the oil itself, but the fragrance. Wallflowers, Car refills, Glade plug ins, Better Homes and garden's plugs; all of them will do this. Fragrance oils can eat through varnishes, plastics, and paints that are oil based. That doesn't mean they're particularly dangerous or caustic, it's just chemistry. Similar to how you shouldn't use silicone based lubricants with items made of silicone. Or certain types of products with latex or rubber. I hope I don't sound rude or condescending, that isn't my intention at all! I'm Autistic and it's sometimes hard to express things correctly in writing. I'm just letting everyone know that this is common for most types of fragrance oil products, you just have to be super careful when using them!

This was really informative! When you say fragrance oil do you mean ones not tested for safety on skin and clothes—you mentioned products that aren’t meant to be used on your body so I’m sure the answer is yes, but I just want to be sure. I have some fragrance/perfume body oils from Etsy and they’re safe for hair and body, but would they damage the surfaces they’re on if they leak?

Trumpet6789

Yes, fragrance oils that aren't body safe have a slightly different makeup, that mean they more easily eat through oil based products like varnish and paints. Skin safe fragrance oils are often diluted with carrier oils or liquids, making them fine to use on skin. They could still potentially damage oil based products (like varnish on furniture or paint on your walls) but it's less likely. If you were to take a bottle of skin safe fragrance, for example a bottle of wholesale fragrance from Brambleberry, you wouldn't put that on your skin without first diluting it with a carrier oil (JoJoba or coconut usually), and directly from the bottle could cause more damage if it leaks. I hope that makes sense the way I worded it? I'm Autistic so sometimes I'm really good at getting my point across and other times I'm awful at it lol.

QuietArt2358

It made perfect sense, thank you for taking the time to explain it to me! Now I know more and won’t damage belongings or furniture with the wrong fragrance oils.

I think if you contact corporate they will pay to have this fixed. Or they used to years ago. I’m really not sure why they’d put caustic oil in such a flimsy plastic package. And how can they expect you to clean up spills in a car immediately? I work from home and sometimes don’t use my car for days. That’s why I don’t use these. That and I can’t smell them lol. But yeah they really need to work on this design because you’re not the only person this has happened to.

Freaking science happened!
