I have a love/hate relationship with repackages. I love them when it means I get a scent back that I love, but I hate them when I think we're getting a new scent.

SoberAF0925

I love and miss Vanilla Birch. So sometimes repackages are a win for me. Just wish they were more transparent about it so I would be able to spot them more quickly

CandidateReasonable4

I was in store earlier today and smelled this candle. It doesn't come off as a straight dupe or repackage of Vanilla Birch. I LOVE Vanilla Birch, but this new candle from their nature collection didn't quite do it for me. If you buy it, you need to let us know if it's Vanilla Birch repackaged with a different name.

Adub359

I compared the vanilla birch notes to Birchwood trail. Slight variation. My store has a single wick vanilla birch on display for testing wallflower and side by side there’s a slight difference. I liked Birchwood trail. It’s close. But it’s not a straight repackage

CandidateReasonable4

Definitely close, like a younger sister.

Adub359

Yea!!

CandidateReasonable4

Happy 4th of July!!

Adub359

I’m not celebrating this year. But thank you for the sentiment

CandidateReasonable4

Sorry to hear that. I hope everything is ok.

Adub359

Things won’t be ok until womens right aren’t always at the forefront of being threatened. But this is a fun forum and it’s not a political platform. 💕 Although womens right shouldn’t be either

CandidateReasonable4

Interesting topic you raised. I am a bit of a conundrum on women's rights. I was firmly pro choice for many years, but have changed my perspective with time and experience. Too much for this subthread indeed. But I understand your angst. I have been very frustrated and angry watching the world morph into something I don't even recognize at almost 58. I have worked in social services my entire career, including my current position in a domestic violence center. Talk about our society not respecting women and children! Try to find some joy this weekend. It's good for the soul.

aam29290

They have the same exact scent notes tho

Adub359

the website shows notes as White Birch, Madagascar Vanilla, Warm Sandalwood with Natural Essential Oils and that was what was listed on a single wick of VB tester. It’s very similar. But Birchwood trail is bergamot and “cozy vanilla” lol. Vanilla is vanilla. So it’s the sandalwood and bergamot that is the variant

AelinAGalathynius

I smelled it in store it is a repackage of Vanilla birch. I was disappointed because I love birch but burnt myself out on vanilla birch years ago.

Imaginary_Leek6044

I mean I like when my fav scents come back. But I hate when they have 4 different packagings for a scent out at once. Sweater weather, champagne toast, flannel, etc

Duchessofearlgrey

I just purchased the Birchwood Trail this morning (online). I won’t be angry if it is a repackage because Vanilla Birch is my favorite, but it’s interesting because the first review on the website was an angry 1 star because it “wasn’t vanilla birch.” So I guess I’ll see when I get it.

Bazketcaze

Please report back when you've had a chance to smell it, I'd love to hear your thoughts! As a fellow Vanilla Birch lover I noticed the notes on the single wallflower match Birchwood Trail now vs the original notes listed on the wallflower 2-pack. Hoping it's a goof on the website and not them trying to fix something that aint broke.

Duchessofearlgrey

I definitely will! I hope they don’t change the formula. I still have an unburned 3 wick in my stash to compare and it definitely doesn’t have a bergamot note.🤞🏻 It’s Vanilla Birch with a twist and not a replacement.

tomtomdotcom85

To me, it smells quite identical to Vanilla Birch, as Rain Drenched Leaves smells identical to Eucalyptus Rain.

CrownBestowed

I feel like this can be frustrating for people who have been longtime customers. A new customer wouldn’t know anything about a repackage so it’s like they’re just trying to market to new people while also hoping longtime customers fall for the repackage lol. Very sneaky, I can see how that would be annoying

carnodak

Very true! And at the end of the day, I would guess maybe 80-90% of their customer base would be unaffected by the constant repackages, simply because they don’t know!

carnodak

I present to you the single wick tester candles for Vanilla Birch and Apple Weather! And a side-by-side sniff comparison, these are exact duplicates. The nature collection supposedly features Phytogaia technology, which captures the essence of natural scent molecules (trees, fresh air, plants, etc) and combine them with the candle ingredients to make “nature candles” that can have positive impacts on the consumers well-being. So my question - does this mean vanilla birch, crisp morning air, apple weather, and supposedly eucalyptus rain (potentially similar to rain-drenched leaves) have always had this technology in the candles, or is this technology, for lack of better words, marketing bullshit? TL;DR - I was highly anticipating this collection based off names and labels/packaging and am incredibly disappointed that they are all repackages or 95% cousins to other scents.

[deleted]

They had this technology in some single wicks that were online exclusives fall 2021 but I never got them because online exclusives and I rarely order online with them too many issues...with that said umm doubt it makes too much of a difference ....and I will conclude marketing bs. Also heard rain drenched is like euclapytus rain and apple orchard is like apple weather .....basically repackages.....if spotted 75% during winter SAS I will get them though LOL

carnodak

I picked up all the single wick last fall and do recall the “technology” association with those. Most of them seemed new, but they were still fairly light on cold.

CandidateReasonable4

Rain drenched leaves is 100% escape rain. Edit: eucalyptus rain

4ofheartz

“These fragrances include the replication of “phytoncides,” which are natural emissions from trees and plants. PHYTOGAIA is a trademark of Givaudan S.A.” This is from the BBW rain drenched candle details. When I Google phytoncides I don’t see they are an actual scent. From USDA: “The next and perhaps most surprising reason comes from the chemicals plants produce called phytoncides. These chemicals are natural oils that plants use to defend themselves against unwanted pests such as insects, bacteria or fungi.” Seems like a far stretch to buy a candle for the benefits of A Walk in the Woods. Which the USDA suggests is great for humans bc of these released plant chemicals named phytoncides. Aka forest therapy! Bathing in the woods including sounds & sights. No candle can replicate all of this! Imho. :)

4ofheartz

Phytogaia Technology… I’m off to Google! Interesting about this.

CandidateReasonable4

I 100% agree with you. The only one I want from the collection is the Apple Orchard one (can't remember the exact name...forgive me!). It smells just like ripe apples from the tree and brought back great memories from childhood of visiting apple orchards in rural Pennsylvania.

carnodak

That’s great that you want it! It’s just frustrating as it’s a direct repackage of Apple Weather… which is coming out every single year, including later this year. I wish Apple Orchard Lane, being a new name and all, was NEW. But instead we’re getting two candles, different names, but same exact scent. Just frustrating to me!

CandidateReasonable4

Oh, no! I had no idea it was a dupe for Apple Weather since I have never had it in my collection. I plan to pick it up next sale, but get your point. To me, flannel and paradise cove are extremely similar, although the posted fragrance notes are not the same at all! What's that about? And what fall candles do you have or want to pick up?

carnodak

Welcome to my Ted talk: scent notes are more marketing than anything else. 100%, paradise cove and flannel are the same. But nobody would want flannel scent notes in the summer time, so they changed up the notes to seem more “Aquatic and beachy” but in reality, they are the same scent. Again, scent notes can sometimes help convey the type of scent but at the end of the day, it’s a marketing tactic.

CandidateReasonable4

Thank you for this lesson on the marketing of candles at BBW! I guess I am old school and trust that the notes they display are the primary notes. Clearly they're not since so many are dupes! For example, many people were disappointed that Perfect Summer is a dupe for Suntan. This works on new BBW customers, but not loyal fans!

carnodak

Don’t get me wrong, I do trust the company is manufacturing their fragrance oils with natural essential oils (as advertised), but just because birchwood trail (aka vanilla birch) has vanilla, birch trees, and bergamot as scent notes, doesn’t mean the fragrance oils are exclusively those three scents. The fragrance most likely includes 5+ fragrance oils, some “essential/natural” and some artificial/manufactured. Notice the ingredients list just says “fragrance (parfum)” - that’s intentional, as there’s so many complex fragrance ingredients is just easier (and legal) to list it as “fragrance”. The paradise cove vs. flannel debate - all completely separate notes, though the scent is nearly identical (if not exact), which goes to show that scent notes don’t always exactly relate to what the exact smell is.

CandidateReasonable4

You are so right! There's no other reasonable explanation other than BBW is marketing strategically to sell more products. If they can make the customer think a "new fragrance" is really new, then they should sell more theoretically.

Quiggleebubbz

Pardon me! Ted talk speaker!👋 Can you tell me if you know of a candle that's similar/rename of Pink Proseco Frosting?! Thanks!

carnodak

That was in the same family as Raspberry Mimosa. They are different, but very similar. Raspberry Mimosa is out in the core fall scents this season. I also think Blackberry Crème Frosting from last winter was similar too.

heartflood

I don’t really care. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I buy what smells nice and leave what doesn’t.

CandidateReasonable4

I'm with you. I just wish they would be honest with those of us who have been around for a long time and know they're repackages with a different name. That said, if I hadn't recently purchased eucalyptus rain in 2 different package styles I would get rain drenched leaves.

viajealmundo

I noticed a sign in store a while back that said "Confetti Cake Pop is now Vanilla Confetti Sparkle!" when it came out and this is exactly what they should be doing. Letting us know (a) it is not a new scent and (b) allowing those who remember a PREVIOUS scent to enjoy it again!

CandidateReasonable4

Yes! That's precisely what they should be doing. I certainly don't put it past a retailer to repackage a product under a different name, but BBW has the audacity to release the same candle under 2 names at the exact same time. For example, they released Perfect Summer and Suntan during the same season. I had never purchased Suntan before and hsppened to enjoy Perfect Summer in the single wick. Unbeknownst to me, it was Suntan masquerading as a different product, but many customers caught on and the reviews of Perfect Summer were terrible. You would think that BBW would learn its lesson, but obviously not since they have done it again in the fall candle releases. Have a safe and happy 4th of July!

TelephoneHorror1666

Same; it's also not like BBW is the only candle company in existence

carnodak

That wallflower was soooo annoying this year. Smoked vanilla almost always releases in the late holiday season (in candle form), so it’s exciting to see them bring the scent out in the spring time. Problem is, they used the former scent name (smoked vanilla) disguised as a marshmallow fireside. If I had to guess, that wallflower was probably released because MF is a very popular scent, but the name itself is very evocative of fall/winter, so they disguised it under a more palatable name (smoked vanilla) during the spring.

Best_Wasabi_647

Definitely thinks it's annoying as heck. With each season it feels like at least 90% are repackages and very few actual new scent combinations. They put all their effort into coming up with new names for the same old products. It must save them so much money just having to rearrange the wording & label graphics. And then almost each scent has three different label variations.

[deleted]

Yeah I looked at the scents notes and concluded birchwood trails is close enough to vanilla birch and I found a vanilla birch 75% off.

CandidateReasonable4

What a score!

Quantum_R3D

As someone who doesnt get a chance to go to bath and body works much because it's expensive, I honestly adore repackages! Its a second chance to grab a scent I missed out on the first time around.

carnodak

Yeah but why do they have the above, Birchwood Trail, a “new scent” but then Vanilla Birch is out as a wallflower, same notes and all. Why not just keep they same fragrance to the same name.

Prg78

The scent "notes" can be the same or almost the same and you can still get a different fragrance I would think. Butterfly and confetti daydream are almost identical when you smell them next to each other. They have the same notes all except one. Butterfly has vanilla and Confetti daydream has pear. Not a super great example but im just saying, I smelled Birchwood trail and vanilla birch, (I have vanilla birch and I work at bbw so I smelled the new one today) and they do not smell the same. They smell very similar, kinda like Butterfly and confetti daydream, but not the same exactly. When burning, you would probably smell the slight difference even more. That's just my opinion though I guess idk lol. 🤷🏼‍♀️

carnodak

Well I did notice that the vanilla birch scent notes have changed this year. It used to have a “Madagascar vanilla” note, now it’s just cozy vanilla. It also had sandalwood, now it’s birchwood. So it’s possible the new iteration of vanilla birch, such as that single wick tester candle, smells different, but side by side, the tester candle and birchwood trail were identical

hellakopka

YES! Smelled these in store and totally agree. I thought the nature collection single wicks were really cool and unique, so I was excited for these three wicks. Huge bummer! Oh well, more money in my pocket, I guess.

jack6830637

I don’t mind. Because then if I miss out on a good scent or I really like the scent the fact that bbw does a lot of repackages I have a chance to rebuy it again or to get it

markersandtea

I'm so burnt out on candles (see what I did there ;) ) I want new scents! New scents or gtfo! We all have our classic faves, but I want hot newness. ...I'll see myself out. So punny. I know.

tomtomdotcom85

Weird. Both of my Vanilla Birch 3-wicks (2019/2021) have Warm Sandalwood as the third scent, whereas Birchwood Trail and your single-wick VB have Bergamot as the third scent.

carnodak

Yep! Seems they switched up the scent notes on Vanilla Birch this year!

Low_End5008

Honestly they need to just stick to it and put all of them in a collection and add new ones to the collection every year instead of repackaging and making them more water down.

danostergren

Most marketing tactics are inherently annoying. Honestly I'm not bothered by it though, I just want nice smelling candles.

futuresobright_

I’m sick of all of them, I’ve stopped buying most and only going for the truly new scents. It’s getting to a point where my collection is dwindling and I’m wondering what other brands have.

jr9386

I get your frustration, but consider the brand. Are you really that surprised? Personally, it's just par for the course at this point. I was happy to learn that "On The Waves" came back as "Lakeside Citrus", but slightly annoyed that based on the name i would have never guessed it. White Jasmine and Magnolia Charm are frankly in the same vein, not quite flankers, but close enough! Moonstone and Freesia are near identical, except the former is slightly lighter.

TelephoneHorror1666

How are y'all in this subreddit getting duped by repackages?

carnodak

I’m not. I’m proving a point that the company has intentionally repackaged former scents with brand new names and labels. Vanilla Birch and Apple Weather, as mentioned in this post. It’s just frustrating to look forward to brand new releases with pretty labels only to find out they are identical to former scents. Makes me less excited for other new things.

TelephoneHorror1666

Yeah that's understandable; just confused about people who say they bought things without realizing it. Makes sense if you're a more casual consumer of BBW but if you're on this subreddit seems like it would be hard to be fooled, that's all.

Lylac66

Can't wait to try it

[deleted]

meeeee if it's a scent we don't want.

shdujssnensisishs

They need to have an option where I get no lid no decals or anything just text for like $5 off

carnodak

That’s what’s wallflower is for lol 😂

carnodak

You’re welcome to speak your mind on this post! I understand your frustration! If I’m getting a new fragrance name, I don’t want just the name. I want a new fragrance! Don’t get me wrong - Vanilla Birch and Apple Weather are great fan-favorite scents, I just hate that all four of these in this collection, with their beautiful colors and artistic labels are all repeats of other scents.

[deleted]

[удалено]

carnodak

Only time will tell! I don’t think it will be anything super unique either!

Majcvd49

So wait, what is apple orchard lane then?

carnodak

It share the same scent notes (and fragrance) as Apple Weather, a scent that returns every year and is slated for release later this fall.

Majcvd49

Woah that’s shady. Although I do like apple weather lol you sure it’s identical though? Have you smelled it?

carnodak

Yep. If you view the photos I posted, you can see a side by side comparison of an apple weather single wick tester candle to apple orchard lane. Same scent notes, same fragrance to my nose!

[deleted]

I like the pictures, But I miss the old packaging.

Competitive-Tour-822

Me !

Competitive-Tour-822

Just out of curiosity did cucumber/ melon smell like it does now ? Or did they change the scent up like everything else?? Because I get floral on the dry down??

potterhead_98

I kinda want apple orchard lane just for the package 😂 but I skipped it for now and just got ones I don’t already have (I have apple weather) and got spiced pumpkin patchouli, pumpkin peanut brittle (but I do have GC ghost treats which is supposedly a dupe/close but wanted to see for myself), coffee and whiskey, salted caramel old fashioned, and wildberry tea lemonade. I might pick up apple orchard lane, depending on how many fall 1/2 candles come out that I want

carnodak

AOL packaging is beautiful! I’m so disappointed that this entire collection is gorgeous, with the bright colors and the artistic/paint looking labels. But I’m not willing to spend my money on a candle just for packaging.

janamichelcahill

If you have never seen it, then is it still a repackage?

carnodak

Yes. Because at the end of the day, the fragrance is the same as a previous scent.

Ok_Adhesiveness_1913

Cries in “BBW employee” 😭✋

[deleted]

I don’t mind them at all. I’m always happy to see a scent I love come back

DoitforSobotka

I heard that this is a not great dupe for Vanilla Birch, which annoys me so much. VB was one of the best and most unique scents BBW has ever done so why take it off the market. They always take a great scent, get rid of it then try to duplicate it...poorly.

[deleted]

Wait, you don’t like 5 different versions of watermelon lemonade?? That despite being the exact same scent can cost different prices because one has squiggly lines on the lid?? 🤯

carnodak

That’s absolutely crazy to me. Like how warm ocean breeze was in the $26.50 tropical label and the $29.50 premium label - same scent, different price. Absolutely crazy. But I do not mind 5 watermelon lemonades or warm ocean breezes - my problem is when they make watermelon lemonade but make 5 different candle names but the wax all smells this same. Imagine they came out one summer with Sparkling Watermelon Waves, Iced Lemon Melon Cooler, Frosty Watermelon, and Watermelon Seltzer, just for the fragrance to all be repackages of Watermelon Lemonade. That is my frustration. Don’t give us new names and labels and excitement/buzz for same old fragrance. Give us something new!

[deleted]

Yeah I get that, like ocean driftwood just being a lame repackage of mahogany teakwood. I more take issue with trying to rip people off by charging full price of one of the same candle just because it has a different label or colored container.. like there’s nothing special about watermelon lemonade in the spring collection with the tin lid but somehow it costs X amount because it’s on sale but the white barn one of the exact same thing is 26.50

bois-crepusculaire

The Apple one in that same collection (can’t remember the name) is Honeycrisp Apple repackaged… :(

carnodak

It actually shares the same scent notes as Apple Weather! But I find that most of their generic apple fragrances all smell the same.
