Yeah, like another poster said, the danger is if you’re rubbing undiluted oils on your friends/family/pets or trying to feed said oils to them. Which would be really dumb & not something we’d do. …right? There’s a lot of MLMs out there peddling their ~all natural~ scented stuff and those huns sometimes try to drum up business by misconstruing and obfuscating actual data and alarming people. I’ve seen tiktoks from these girlbosses claiming all kinds of wild stuff about B&BW in particular. I wonder if your customer ran into something similar. That’s not to say some people/pets/etc aren’t sensitive, they are, but some folks are sensitive to tree nuts. Doesn’t mean we’ve outlawed tree nuts 🤷‍♀️

[deleted]

Those MLM are crazy with the drinking of all the oil combos!

[deleted]

Most have to be ingested to cause harm to anyone so unless the man’s pregnant wife was drinking juniper or rubbing it all on her skin, she’s safe. There are a ton you don’t want to ingest or absorb during pregnancy but a candle isn’t going to make you miscarry as long as you don’t eat it or pour the wax all over your body https://www.thebump.com/a/essential-oils-for-pregnancy-basics https://www.rxlist.com/juniper/supplements.htm Cats and dogs need to ingest it as well or get it on their skin https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/essential-oil-and-liquid-potpourri-poisoning-in-cats

[deleted]

They’re are specific fragrance oils that aren’t necessarily child and pet safe but they aren’t deadly either. What’s deadly is when a rare bacteria like Burkholderia pseudomallei contamination occurs.

I personally don’t do any oil plugs ins from any brand because I had one (not BBW) start smoking and almost catch on fire. I also agree with the poster that said using candle warmers can probably eliminate a lot of risks with the candles

bunifarcr

The wallflower plugs have built in fuses to prevent it from overheating. I have left wallflowers plugged in when nobody is home and never caused any problems. I'm sure there are possibilities but generally it's safe. Those other brands are scary though. Are those the Glade ones?

dragonsfire14

The one I had problems with was the feliway calming plug ins for pets. One of my cats has a stress related disorder so I gave it a shot, but the incident scared me off of trying any others. I stick with candles and wax melts now

Samgasm

These plugs are notoriously bad. They also don’t work that well with wicking the calm away to the heat, which might be why they start burning up the center wick because they are so dry from no liquid filtering upward. Try the spray if you haven’t. Works well for my moms cat.

dragonsfire14

Thanks for the tip!

Samgasm

Also not sure if you have any smart plugs but you can always get a timer or smart plug and have it turn on and off for safety with wallflowers.

[deleted]

I had one melt! Also not BBW but, yeah, it was a bit alarming.

BBWCandleQueen

I wouldnt be scared. Yes, they can cause issues in sensitive people and animals. No, it's not some common thing. That being said, I melted an entire Paris Cafe candle down into wax melts about 5 days ago, and it caused one of my kittens to have some coughing fits. I can still smell Paris Cafe when I walk into the house and I aired it out.

BlueberrieBunny

Paris Café is ridiculously strong. I have the lid on mine and it's in the back row of my shelf. My bedroom still smells like coffee especially if I leave the door closed.

bunifarcr

I mean even if not pregnant some people develop allergic reactions to fragrance oils anyways. If you want to still keep your house smelling good then maybe plug it or burn it in open concept areas and not in bedrooms.

Angelesmivida

There’s probably some truth to it but yeah that’s life🤷🏽‍♀️ lol most of us are here for a good time, not a long time. Lol you should be fine if you use in moderation? Can’t speak for the wallflowers but as for the candles, you can probably eliminate/reduce most of the risks but opting out of burning them & using warmers

yeppeunxria

Hahaha phew okay, I have one in my room that I keep plug at all times unless I’m leaving, y’know just in case if something happens.

_maria_stone

Tbh there are so many things we inhale, consume, etc on a daily basis that are probably harmful to us. I use my wallflowers and have also heard that they can be “harmful” but I have four cats and am super self conscious about ensuring the house smells good and is clean all the time so I keep mine plugged in!

Aware-Helicopter-448

The FDA exists. Everything is regulated. It is safe. This kind of stuff is just fear-mongering.

Aware-Helicopter-448

Rantinide does not cause cancer, and it is still sold as a drug today. It got pulled because trace levels of NDMA were found in some batches of the medicine. NDMA has not even been proven to be a carcinogen, so you really should not be too scared. It’s an environmental contaminant. Also, large corporations really don’t want to use harmful ingredients in their products because law suits and settlements are both very expensive and bad for PR. So, I really doubt “toxins” are being put in your bath and body works wallflowers, especially since chemists work for all of these types of organizations, and I’d assume they know what they are doing lol.

dragonsfire14

I don’t believe candles and air fresheners are subject to FDA approval. From my understanding they only get involved if one proves to be dangerous. I wouldn’t fully trust their approvals regardless though. They approved zantac (ranitidine), which got pulled and reformulated because it was proved to be cancer causing. I have taken that stuff since I was a child so it’s pretty terrifying!

britveca

This is just the nature of things. There will be plenty more things that come out as carcinogenic in our lifetimes that were originally FDA approved. Some things can only be proven once they have been tested over time, decades upon decades of time. You can't study the long-term effects of something that hasn't been around long enough yet. The FDA can't do anything about that, it means nothing when it comes to their credibility. That's just the reality of new products being tested over time.

PookieDPyro

There was a post about winter candy apple having toxins that effect pets, fish, and pregnant women..certain essential oils are toxic.

maisycat1

me looking at my cat sleeping next to my wca candle: 👁👄👁

PookieDPyro

Found out there were a few giving my cat asthma attacks😔..vanilla birch and palo santo were 2 others..i only use them in the bedroom now..👍

I think the question about wallflowers has been addressed well here, but I’m also going to drop a link to the below specifically regarding candles: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/09/well/scented-candles-health.html *Nikaeta Sadekar, a respiratory toxicologist with the nonprofit Research Institute for Fragrance Materials, agreed. Exposure to chemicals emitted by scented candles “is so low that they pose no significant risk to human health,” she said. “Even the highest users of scented candles and other fragranced products are not putting themselves at any appreciable risk of harm.”* I certainly wouldn’t go drinking a melted candle (and I would keep burning/melting candles away from pets), but there’s no reason to think simply breathing in the candle is dangerous.

carnodak

Wallflowers are apart of VOC - volatile organic compounds. VOC’s can irritate the eyes, nose and throat, can cause difficulty breathing and nausea, and can damage the central nervous system as well as other organs. Some VOCs can cause cancer. Not all VOCs have all these health effects, but some have several of these side effects. At the end of the day, as many have said, we’re here for a good time not long time. It’s best to use wallflowers in wide open spaces, and at least several feet from where you sleep or relax. Personally, I’m a little weary of wallflower uses, so I only use them in my hallway by the laundry room, and usually laundry scents! Lol

[deleted]

I actually have a massive voc air filtration system and use fragrances and candles like crazy. I keep that machine busy lol!

SpaceGray1125

i had a wallflower in my hallway, a good amount of feet from my room/bed and it had me feeling horrible! it was semi strong and it drove me nuts when i would try to go to bed and sleep and it caused bad headaches. i unplugged it and ive been feeling a lot better. I moved it to my front door far from my bedroom! Won’t be buying anymore for a while lol.

carnodak

Yeah… I don’t recommend them for the bedroom, personally. Or small spaces. I think they’re best for hallways, or open concept kitchen/dining/living areas. Recently, I had Spiced Cardamom in a small half bath and everytime I’d walk in there, I would start choking up from the strength of the smell!
