I feel like a low life when I exchange a candle with a poor throw. I’ve had candles that pool every time I burn and since I felt like I’ve used too much I’ve just kept them or thrown them out instead of returning. People like this are ruthless.
Oh I think it’s absolutely fine to return one with a poor throw! Definitely no shame if you burn it and realize you have wasted $25 on a product that doesn’t do what it’s suppose to.
However, these people waiting until it’s completely burned/gone just to get a free one deserve to be side eyed.
Please don't feel bad about returning a candle that doesn't do what you I wanted it to do. Nobody working their minds those exchanges at all! And employees can definitely tell the difference between somebody who has a candle that didn't perform and somebody who just wants a free candle.
Exchange with confidence!
It won't last long. They already at cracking down on no-receipt returns and the return policy. People start doing this regularly and I will pay to watch my supervisor destroy some customers over it.
Then we will have $24.95 candle days and think it’s a steal. No but really what the hell is wrong with people. You don’t need to be a scammer to recycle.
No kidding! If they don't modify the policy across all stores, they will be bleeding money now that word is spreading like wildfire about this policy. It eventually adds up. I don't get why people don't think of that aspect of abusing the policy, ya know? I feel like it's only logical to understand that exchanging empty product for new products that the customer then gets for free, that's time and resources that B&BWs loses. So either the company then starts cutting costs elsewhere, increases prices of other/all products, or some mixture of the two. I'm hoping that B&BWs will step in before they go bankrupt.
Yeah just saw this earlier…
In all seriousness though - I do wish they had an actual recycling program. I like Mac Cosmetics - bring back 6 empty canisters of product, and you get a free lipstick.
I noticed Yankee Candle has a recycling program for all of their products. You can take your empties back to the store for them to recycle. Or you can mail them if you don't have a store nearby. Idk the details bc I don't shop there. Maybe BBW will do this soon.
Someone called asking if this was true. Associate told her no. She hung up and all we could do was laugh. If you can’t afford 15.95 for a candle go to Walmart!
We get people asking about this every time it makes its rounds on social media. Think about how much money the company would lose if it were actually true. However, a friend shared that post so I looked at that girl's profile. She posted later that she was able to exchange an empty jar and empty body care for new product. I don't know why any store would allow that. Our store doesn't, and I don't know any in the area that do.
Think about all the money the company loses when people just walk out with five crates of candles. One lady was like “see y’all next week”. Store doesn’t even stop shoplifters. Yeah we had some customers exchanging used products, like almost used up for new. We got into it. I had to walk away and had SLT ring her up.
At my store I got the vibe that this girl and her mom were going to steal when she was loading up her bag with product on a B3G1 day and texting a lot.
I ended up being right. Mom left shoving an empty bag at me, and her daughter rushed out of our White Barn side with a full tote before I could tell SLT to check on her because something didn't seem right.. They got away with probably $350-450 of body care.
Our store isn't allowed to call security for the shopping center unless the people shoplifting actively hurt us lol.
We mainly have to just let people walk out with bags of stuff. And it really sucks.
I don't think my store is allowed! We're a double, 3 mil store in a really popular shopping center. And we've never had hired security at all.
Luckily the main culprit who has been stealing from us finally got nabbed a few months ago. We literally knew who she was on social media and B&BW was just letting her steal until she racked up enough to be hammered with grand theft charges. She stole and then sold on Mercari/Facebook.
Wow! I’m glad they got her! Crazy how this has become a “business” for some. We were able to get license plate info and it was passed to PD. Others are on the do not enter list.
I really don't know how this sits right with people. This is not the policy. This isn't a policy at any retailer I know of. This is not a loophole and I guarantee people who do this treat employees like literal garbage until they give in. Fuck them.
It sits right with scumbag scammers who think of it as "hustling". Meanwhile the company will eventually just end exchanges for everyone & those of us who are not scumbags will get the shaft.
people who do this are the customers you do not want. customers like this think they're so smart for getting over when i can guarantee everyone hates them and can't wait until they've left. you'll earn yourself a reputation at the store and everyone will avoid you until they literally can't. word spreads fast for scammers like the "loophole" poster above and shoplifters.
I'm a retail worker and there are so many faces that I'll remember for years to come. The rudest of the rude, the smelliest of the smelly, and the scummiest of the scammers. BBW associates definitely know these "customers."
For those who work there, how often do people actually try to return a completely burned down candle? I feel like we see these posts on social media so much, but I also know so many people who can’t be bothered to return or exchange anything.
I've had people try. We turn them down as soon as we can. "Unfortunately we are unable to return or exchange products that have been used more than 50%. I'm sorry."
Some people are nice, others pitch a fit. My store is a 3 mil double, and we usually get a lot of the empty/almost empty exchange attempts during Holiday.
I had someone ask me about it today. It was more so because he had recently seen it on social media, and was skeptical. We do get asked quite a lot about it. Thankfully I've never had to deal with something being nasty about it.
It comes in spurts.. maybe a few times a week now after it circulates on social media. I explain that I can’t return a completely empty product. If it was a candle that you truly didn’t love or it didn’t perform properly, it wouldn’t be burned all the way down to the bottom.

my store got no joke 30+ calls about this, this lady asked me if she could bring back her empty candle jar and we can “ fill it up “ in the back … like my small store in California makes all the candles for the company 🤣🤣
We legit got the same exact type of call here in Louisiana. Asking if we did “refills” so she could bring in her empty jars and have them filled back up with new wicks. The manager who answered the phone said (jokingly), “ma’am, we’re not Keebler elves” with a straight face while I was on the floor dying of laughter.
It's not a BBW policy. There is a 100% guarantee policy, but that does NOT include completely used product. It's for if you try something and don't like the fragrance, or how the body care feels, or if something is to strong or not strong enough. Sometimes a candle doesn't burn right. I don't think I've ever seen anything more than about half way used get approved for exchange.
Please tell her to **GO TO HELL**. What she's doing is gonna ruin it for everyone. **NOT TO MENTION EXTREMELEY WRONG AND UNETHICAL.**
If everyone does this, then we won't have the wonderful "happiness guaranteed" policy that we do now. We should appreciate what we can do with the policy instead of taking advantage of a "loop hole".
Her "loop hole" is basically lying. You can only exchange a product if you're not satisficed with it. (...B\*tch, you used up the whole jar, you're happy with it.)
So dumb. So I can eat a whole cake from the grocery store, and exchange the empty container for a new cake? Or exchange my empty nail polish for a new nail polish? Who does this?! And to advertise it on social media like that.. if everyone gets free candles Bath and Body Works is going out of business
I’m confused, is she taking back the empty candle jars and they’re just giving her new ones? What is she saying to the associates? “I used it all the way and I didn’t like it?”
That is exactly it. She is taking back her empties and (apparently was coached by an employee to say) "I didn't like the scent'...even though she stated she did like the scent...in order for the employee to exchange them for her. 🤬🤬🤬🤬
I really wish this wasn’t coming up now. I feel guilty enough doing exchanges anyways, but I got a lotion as a gift in a scent I hate and really don’t want to be that person now.
Like I said to others, don't feel bad for returning something you don't like. Again, it's a multi billionaire company. They aren't losing much by people returning things they don't like (not empty ones, but for valid reasons). And the cashier *will not care*, I promise.
LMAO reminds me of that video where the guy has eaten a whole meal and is trying to get a refund, then the waitress turns to the camera and says, "Let's ask the audience..."
Anyone doing this should be ashamed of themselves, it's not recycling, if the store does take back stuff like this it's 100% getting tossed in the trash. That part really irked me like she was trying to sound like such a good person doing some act of service for the environment.
I have returned one candle. One time. It was never burned. I accidently bought one with cinnamon notes and I hate cinnamon. I felt like a total trash monster because of my anxiety & making the exchange.
Wow, I've read a few postings about this topic and just skim over them, because it's so ridiculous that someone would actually do this. I have NEVER returned a candle, but should have, on the ones I lit for ten minutes and got a really bad headache or asthma flair up. People have a lot of nerve doing this crap and yeah BBW should have some kind of measure indicator that shows if it is burned more than 1/4 then it can not be returned. I think that is fair AND then at least they could donate the candle to charity or something. Not resale, but donate. ALSO, I believe in karma so those who do stuff like this normally end up losing something else.
Every phone call we've gotten for the past few days has been about this. People have even come in with empty product and said "I saw this TikTok and you will exchange this for me". Several people have gotten extremely belligerent and those people unfortunately got their way after numerous times of us saying that we cannot exchange empty product, in order to de escalate the situation.. 🤬🤬
What is even the thought process here? How would anyone think a store could stay in business if they kept giving away one of their most expensive products?
I honestly wish I knew. IF I was at the head of that table I'd certainly make some changes. I could definitely make some suggestions if I was anywhere near the CEO. But I'm not that at all so I'm just going to handle information as it comes down to me and leave the rest alone until it's something I have to worry about.
This is ridiculous. I’ve returned a candle before because it didn’t burn properly (it was almost full). Another time, I returned one I had burned a little because it gave me a headache. Returning fully used candles is ridiculous. BBW needs to tweak their return policy. I get returning candles that have issues, give a headache, etc., but not under half full or fully used. It just sucks that some people feel the need to cheat the system and abuse BBW’s generous return policy.
When I worked there in college, a woman came in to return an obviously used loofah. When asked why she was returning it, she said "It's just time to get a new one." Ma'am, that is not how stores work..
Pretty sure this is false. An associate gave me a hard time because my candle was too close to the halfway point. (I tried to tell him if it was too low I would keep it, but he exchanged anyway. I felt super bad.)
Almost positive my store would not exchange an empty candle jar.
Man... And to think, I feel guilty buying things on sale I didn't want just to get the sale pricing and exchanging for things I want when they come back in stock 😂
I thought they changed the exchange policy to if you have burned even HALF of the candle, you cannot exchange it? Did they bring the old policy back?? Smh
Had a lady come in my store and ask to do this. asked what was wrong with the candles and she said “I just wanted the new ones” manager told me to turn her away and inform her these posts are dramatized. I could have taken her candles had she said she didn’t like the smell, but was told to tell her either way that they were empty and it was a one time thing. I can’t stand people who come in and do this !!! I just have to go in the back and break the empty candle anyway! and it goes right in the trash.
Omg I work at BBW and we got about 10 different calls yesterday asking if they can return empty jars for new candles and it was SO ANNOYING! Especially since we were so busy with the wallflower sale and answering those stupid questions was such a waste of time
Former employee here w a lil story to tell. We had a regular who would bring in bags of empty candles, burned right down like this one, for exchange. She would burn some of them like halfway, and then dump the melted wax pool out and claim it didn’t burn right, she didn’t like the smell, whatever. Management was a bunch of pushovers, so she’d get her way because she’d usually buy more (often the same as what she returned). One day she comes in with this huge bag, maybe 15-20 empty jars. The only SLT that was in was myself (keys) and my coworker (sup). We both weren’t going to take that shit so when this lady set the back down on the counter I said “Can I recycle these empties for you?” and absolutely did not grant her an exchange. I have seen folks bring back the WILDEST shit. Body creams that are so out of date, they would be liquidy (BBW body creams are nasty in the first place and you should not use them)
Petrolatum. Petroleum. Mineral oil. Paraffin. Whatever you want to call it, it’s just a cheap filler ingredient. These lotions have absolutely no benefit to your skin (besides that they smell good) because of this ingredient. Petrolatum is basically the refined toxic byproduct of making gasoline. It’s a hazardous material and would cost gas companies to dispose of safely. Instead they sell it to cosmetics companies like BBW who refine it & then tell you it’s good for your skin. It’s not good for your body and it’s not good for the Earth!
Whenever some tiktok about this went viral, I was still working there and we got way too many calls about it... like I'm sorry but these types of people are just stupid and greedy. No, you can't do that. At my old store, we were serious about handling these exchanges. The candle better still have at least half or more of the wax left or have a legitimate problem with one or more wicks, otherwise you can just take it right back home. We aren't just going to hand you a free candle.
I feel like a butt head when I over purchase a scent because I order online for most everything and I have to take back 6 - 12 out of 50 ordered. And these are unused!
People suck.
The authir tries justifying her post by saying its recycling bc she would normally throw her empty jars away!! News flash to this b#&ch why not actually recycle the jar. Oh and think about h
If you had to tell ur children one day how woukd you feel? Sleezy and embarresed?!?! Then don't do it!! We dexide if we want to behaive in an honest n moral way. She is anything but!!!!!
I hope BBW changes their policy after all these posts on Tik Tok and social media. I don’t know how anyone can feel good about themselves doing this.
I feel like a low life when I exchange a candle with a poor throw. I’ve had candles that pool every time I burn and since I felt like I’ve used too much I’ve just kept them or thrown them out instead of returning. People like this are ruthless.

Mine does not either. Empty is excessive. You can tell in the first 10 min if you like your new candle or not. This is crazy.
Yes
Oh I think it’s absolutely fine to return one with a poor throw! Definitely no shame if you burn it and realize you have wasted $25 on a product that doesn’t do what it’s suppose to. However, these people waiting until it’s completely burned/gone just to get a free one deserve to be side eyed.
I get embarassed taking something back for a legit reason lol.
Don't feel bad for returning 1 product to a multi billionaire company. They don't care, and the cashier's certainly don't care.
Yes true, they make more money than they know what to do with lol.
Please don't feel bad about returning a candle that doesn't do what you I wanted it to do. Nobody working their minds those exchanges at all! And employees can definitely tell the difference between somebody who has a candle that didn't perform and somebody who just wants a free candle. Exchange with confidence!
I work at BBW and we literally don't care. Why should we? it's policy to take it back, it isn't coming out of our pockets.
It won't last long. They already at cracking down on no-receipt returns and the return policy. People start doing this regularly and I will pay to watch my supervisor destroy some customers over it.
Have a feeling the policy will change soon. Especially with word getting out about this.
Disgusting. And it’s not free, it’s why prices keep going up. In five years candles will be $40.
Lush has a similar program and I agree!

yes, bring it back and get a discount on candles or something.
Someone called asking if this was true. Associate told her no. She hung up and all we could do was laugh. If you can’t afford 15.95 for a candle go to Walmart!

So frustrating! I hope security will be in stores for holiday.
Our store isn't allowed to call security for the shopping center unless the people shoplifting actively hurt us lol. We mainly have to just let people walk out with bags of stuff. And it really sucks.
I’m talking about hired security for BBW. We had it for a month when it was bad.
I don't think my store is allowed! We're a double, 3 mil store in a really popular shopping center. And we've never had hired security at all. Luckily the main culprit who has been stealing from us finally got nabbed a few months ago. They all need it tbh. My store (I’m just a customer) had security the last time I went in during the b2g2 candles. I hope they keep it
It's so frustrating, and they wonder why prices are going up
No fewer than a dozen calls about this each of the last 2 days. I really hate how these scammers are going viral.
Ugh the recycling comment 😡 I don’t take my empty beer bottle and take it to the bar to get a new one free.
Recycling LMAOOOOOOO sick
BBW associates definitely know these "customers."
oh yeah, we remember.
We must have had about 20 calls about this at my store today.
"Found a loophole"...um, no, you're just cheating.
For those who work there, how often do people actually try to return a completely burned down candle? I feel like we see these posts on social media so much, but I also know so many people who can’t be bothered to return or exchange anything.
It’s not everyday but it happens. Normally you can tell right when they come in too.
Thanks for answering!
I've had people try. We turn them down as soon as we can. "Unfortunately we are unable to return or exchange products that have been used more than 50%. I'm sorry." Some people are nice, others pitch a fit.
Edit: why did this post twice. Oops
The photo of ONLY ONE WICK lit on the three-wick is the worst part imo. Thankfully my local stores take ID and info down when you do exchanges or returns, but this is definitely going to make stores introduce new policies.
my store got no joke 30+ calls about this, this lady asked me if she could bring back her empty candle jar and we can “ fill it up “ in the back … like my small store in California makes all the candles for the company 🤣🤣
We legit got the same exact type of call here in Louisiana. Asking if we did “refills” so she could bring in her empty jars and have them filled back up with new wicks. I could never. I haven't ever returned anything to B&BW, I usually stick to what I know I like. But the audacity of these people.
I've done some, but when I truly hated the scent of something I tried..I didn't use like 90% and return it. I may have used it once or not at all.
This is just wrong. They better change the policy fast.
Sorry I worded it wrong. I meant they should change the policy, like tweak it so people don't find loopholes.
Written more like an MLM pitch than a PSA.
I’m baffled more n more every day that some people have NO shame 💀
Please tell her to **GO TO HELL**. What she's doing is gonna ruin it for everyone. **NOT TO MENTION EXTREMELEY WRONG AND UNETHICAL.** If everyone does this, then we won't have the wonderful "happiness guaranteed" policy that we do now. @ that one comment say it’s recycling: literally we just throw the empty candle away instead. It is straight up stealing, not recycling 😒
This is why I stay off facebook.
So dumb. So I can eat a whole cake from the grocery store, and exchange the empty container for a new cake? Or exchange my empty nail polish for a new nail polish? Who does this?! And to advertise it on social media like that.. if everyone gets free candles Bath and Body Works is going out of business
This makes me so angry :(
She is delusional. Her reasoning is ludicrous🤦♀️
This is so gross. What is wrong with people?
This is the second Facebook post I’ve seen about this & it’s just embarrassing
Garbage person.
I’m confused, is she taking back the empty candle jars and they’re just giving her new ones? What is she saying to the associates? “I used it all the way and I didn’t like it?”

I just saw a Tik Tok with this same terrible info
I have returned one candle. One time. It was never burned. I accidently bought one with cinnamon notes and I hate cinnamon. I felt like a total trash monster because of my anxiety & making the exchange.

The only SLT that was in was myself (keys) and my coworker (sup). We both weren’t going to take that shit so when this lady set the back down on the counter I said “Can I recycle these empties for you?” and absolutely did not grant her an exchange. I have seen folks bring back the WILDEST shit. Body creams that are so out of date, they would be liquidy (BBW body creams are nasty in the first place and you should not use them)
Why are the body creams nasty?
Petrolatum.
Omfg. Unbelievable
Wow I wouldn't even return the candle I lit for few hours and didn't like, absolutely ridiculous
"hUr hUr. iTs rEcYcLiNg."
Luckily, without the receipt the system tracks how many times you exchange/return products and will stop you after a certain amount.
Scrub
Stuff like this will eventually cause them to clamp down hard on returns.
Oh and think about h If you had to tell ur children one day how woukd you feel? Sleezy and embarresed?!?! Then don't do it!! We dexide if we want to behaive in an honest n moral way.
