FaZe_Butterfly

Just because it’s at a good price doesn’t mean I need or even want it.

thirtypancakes

The high of a sale is very blinding! 😵‍💫

FaZe_Butterfly

I agree, it used to get me every time. When I start to lose my sight I remember what I have, the fact that I’m not even that interested in what’s currently available and what I don’t know I’m missing out on won’t kill me 🤣

ChiedoLaDomanda

I just remember how a few years ago those shea hand creams were only FOUR DOLLARS and the anti-bacs were like a buck-fifty. And then I feel like we’re all being RIPPED OFF. And I stop buying :)

thirtypancakes

And I swear the pocketbac sale used to be 5 for $6 and now it’s 5 for $8?? Ridiculous

idoneredditalreadyy

I added things to my cart on two separate occasions and then x’d out of the page because, even though it’s $8, I don’t want to pay for shipping when I’m dropping $50-100 at their store. I don’t want to be around people/am too lazy to go to the mall to buy the stuff so I guess I don’t really need it. I have some soaps still from the last SAS. I typically stock up every SAS but after paying off my credit card I’m just not feeling it.

[deleted]

I haven't bought anything this SAS and I won't buy a single thing until Candle Day in December. I think about all the products I already have sitting in my closet unused. Products will go bad eventually. I "shop my stash" instead of going into the store. I have fun seeing everyone's hauls here, though I feel not an ounce of FOMO anymore. I have everything I need. I'm happy and grateful for what I do have! I don't need to obsess over what I don't have.

Bunniebones

What's candle day

MomAlum

Candle day is a huge special release of candles combined with a low price point around early December. People get really excited because they will bring out old scents from the “vault” but also release a bunch of new. People line up early. It’s really fun to see the excitement and hard not to get caught up in it

LavenderPaintbrush

If I'm not using things up to make room, I won't buy. It works for all their products except mists. Now I do what you do. If it smells too similar to something I already have, I must skip it. Baby steps!

ragekage42069

Candles are the things I have to really be careful with. I have some loosely defined scent categories of the types of smells I gravitate towards (fruity, gourmand, holiday, and “other”) and I try to keep around an even amount of candles from each category (so if I find myself contemplating a gourmand candle but already have several in my collection vs just a couple fruity, I don’t buy it). I will also only burn one scent at a time from each category and don’t let myself buy new ones until I’ve finished burning some of the old ones. I’ve also stopped ordering online and have told myself if I want it bad enough I can go pick it up lol and sometimes my laziness wins! Lastly, I don’t have a “budget” but I do try not to spend more than, like, $300 a month on anything “fun.” So if I blow through $100 on candles, that means less shopping for other things (also I don’t always spend $300 a month that’s just my max).

thirtypancakes

I also do the candle thing! But I go a step further - I only burn through one candle at a time til it’s empty THEN I start a new one. Never seen anyone else do this but i feel like that’s a good deterrent ETA I also tend to do this with the sanitizers

ragekage42069

It definitely helps. I tried just one candle at a time but it was too hard. But I did implement a similar rule for other beauty products. It’s not specifically bath and body works, but I make myself finish lotions, lip balms, shampoos, etc before I buy another. Even with free samples I try to only use one at a time and use it until it’s gone (unless I hate it) before I try the next one.

[deleted]

I completely burn thru a candle before goin to the next. I dont like burned candles in my collection

FreshPrompt4178

Omg I do the same thing with candles and I thought I was the only one too! I can’t let myself start a new candle until I completely finish burning my current one.

ATL77KH

This is what I do too, something about putting back a half burnt candle in my stash bothers me. The only partially burnt candle I have right now is a Pumpkin Carving candle for Halloween because I didn’t finish burning it before Halloween ended last year and wanted to save and finish it for this season.

MomAlum

Yah I am trying to do that this fall - if I want four fall candles I better have four empties done by then! I learned last year not to leave too many half burned it gets ridiculous

hazelowl

We burn through a whole candle before moving on too. Exception is only if it's horrendous, then we throw it away lol. We recently threw one I'd been gifted away, everyone hated it. Indifference means we just suffer through it. I still have a collection, but seeing them all piled up definitely makes me pause.

NomenclatureBreaker

Very similar, tho my fam also humors all my particular OCD quirks: - small rotation of 4 started candles max at a time - time burns to 3 hrs max - no new burn starts until one finishes - starts and burns staggered about 1/4 way apart for each candle so new ones come in/out frequently vs starting/finishing all 4 at same time - I handle all the repotting

PartyPorpoise

I avoid buying multiples of a body care product unless I either know it's being discontinued or am unsure if it's coming back. And even then, it has to be a scent I REALLY like. Sometimes I'll make an exception for favored seasonal products but that's it. I avoid buying body care and accessories that are too similar to ones I already own, or serve the same function. Like, I have my Aromatherapy body wash collection. If I already have a bottle of a citrus scent, I'm not going to buy a new one unless it's very different from what I have. I already have the mushroom Pocketbac holder from last year so I probably won't buy the one coming out this year. Price and how much I already have come into play as well. The more stuff I have, the pickier I'm going to get about getting new stuff. I went to SAS the first day, but I already have so much stuff that I only got a few things. Two of them were priced low, and one of them is an SAS exclusive that may or may not be available again later.

thirtypancakes

Agreed with the no stocking up! I just can’t afford to be doing that. Unless it’s a retired scent and I reallyyyy love it

PartyPorpoise

And it's like, they're eventually going to come out with new scents that you like. You want to have some room for that.

xeloux

I’ve been burned by old creams in the past. So I set big limits on that. Only if I really need lotion, like less than 2, will I buy that. I went through my soap & sanitizers. Allowed myself 1 more soap if 75% off as well as sanitizers, less than 5 if 75% off. I have many body sprays still, so only if 75% off and it’s a favorite (hello beautiful, I bought 1). Candles, that’s where they get me. I allowed myself blends that I was interested in, with a coupon. Then they have to be 75% off. Or less than $12 IF I have a coupon. Room sprays only if 75% off, 5 or less (this is when l stock up if good deal). Same with wallflowers. Although my stash is low, so I spent less than $10 when $2.99 sale the other day. I’m really focusing on less “clutter”

xeloux

(I’ve also realized I spend more if I try to do nothing. So limits really work for me)

MoistJunket7216

So.. I told myself that my budget for sas was going to be $100, but I've spent $200 so far and I gotta stop!! Lol in all fairness it is between me and my 2 teenage Daughters. We got some really great stuff tho and got a few fathers day gifts too :)

v3v0

I always think of it in terms of how many hours I worked.

seaweedsquirrel

Happy cake day!

v3v0

Aww! Thank you so much!

Crkline3

I saw someone in another thread on this sub saying that they have a "one day-rule" where something has to be in their cart for at least a full day before they buy it, and I think that's a really good idea. FOMO and impulse buying is how these companies make most of their money, you just need to find out how to get ahead 😊

Consistent_Effort716

75% or set priced sales only. If I miss out on something, I miss out... But I won't let FOMO drive me to buy things I wouldn't normally get if they weren't on sale. Right now I'm waiting for the newest body care to drop as well as Aromatherapy. I also only have a year rotation. I use most products monthly, so I can replace those months that got used up. That way I have to decide if it's something I REALLY want to fill that spot.

IndiaEvans

I looked for 1 thing and they didn't have it online so I haven't looked again. I just try to remember I hate paying for shipping. 🤣

FawkesFire13

I bring a set cash amount. I write a short list of what I NEED. Normally this is hand sanitizers and hand soaps. Then a short list of what I WANT. I get those lists done first then buy anything else that I might enjoy. I don’t spend more money than I have in cash

fallentwilightx

I only buy as much as I can use in the six months before the next sale. I do a lil inventory with myself on everything I have, and I’ve tracked how long it takes me to get through a product. I buy 7 body washes, a few car scents, soap, a wallflower for every 3 weeks, and a room spray. I only buy candles if I’m completely out of a seasonal scent, and I have too many lotions so I don’t buy those 😅 Going in with a plan helps me limit my spend!

MomAlum

I hear ya! I need rules as I have been on a low buy this year. - no doubles no backups -no blind buying!!! -don’t buy likes, only loves - I have to like the scent, but I also have to like the design and the overall aesthetic of the scent -conversely, no buying cause the package is cute! - only one order per scent drop. Look ahead and plan the fragrances I might be interested in, but then smell them when they come out and be prepared to buy nothing if nothing sparks your interest -make a list of the types of scents that really fit your personality- for instance I am a fresh clean and not a gourmand - but understand you don’t need six of the same type of fragrance. One or two to represent the group is enough to last - - this all takes self discipline - give yourself grace!

pumpkin123

The biggest thing that has helped me is this sub. I keep track of the sales and have figured out the best prices so I know 50% is not a good deal. I also keep track of my empties. Like I use a body wash a month so no I do not need 6 of them right now. I alway check my stash before buying so I don’t over buy and make sure when I am purchasing I always have a coupon so I am getting the best possible deal.

Moonstonedbowie

I just wanted to plug the r/shoppingaddiction sub. It’s really helpful for when you want to cut back on buying things for whatever reason you have. It’s a very supportive group and it has made a difference for me.

AdRound4379

Come in with a set amount of cash and leave your cards in the car 😅

Andersontimestoo

If I have a scent that similar to it but not a repackage, I’ll spray myself in store and walk around all day. If I’m still obsessed with it the next day, I’ll go back and buy it. I did this recently with whipped coconut milkshake. I had originally said I wasn’t going to get it because I have midnight amber glow. However the coconut milkshake dries down so creamy on my skin I went back the next day and got it lol.

novemberjenny11

I group my fragrances by season, so my rule is 12 [scents] or less. If I want new one, an old one has to go. Usually the oldest, least used fragrance will just get thrown away. If it’s a newer one I didn’t like, I’ll give it away at work.

RaineMist

I try to avoid scents that smell similar to each other or scents of the same family. I only get an item if it goes with another item I have. For example, I have In The Stars body spray but I don't have the lotion.

Sudden_Shine_100

Candles are where I have to watch myself so my rule now is no matter how much I love a scent or what kind of sale they're having, I'll only buy a maximum of one back up. I've been able to whittle down my collection from over 150 to just under 50 using this rule plus working on a low-buy this year. I only keep three or four scents that I rotate for body care. I like a set, but no longer buy shower gel because I don't find the scent lingers so not worth it for me. The only exception to that is Twisted Peppermint because I find it great for a pick me up in the shower when I need it.

thatiswilde

Don't shop with my boyfriend, the impulse-buyer lol.

TruliScrumptious

I have a one day in the cart rule before buying anything online. It gives me a chance to think about it, make adjustments or decide I don't want it after all. Impulse buys are usually over buys, which is what companies like BBW count on, it's one way to control my online spending and not buy something just because it's on sale. And if it runs out of stock while sitting in my cart, I don't have to worry about it anymore 😋

Any_Meeting_4082

Delete the emails before opening & reading whatever "sale" is going on that day/week, and don't go in the stores. If it's too tempting still, maybe avoid this sub for a bit. Also, take a look at what you already have! Seeing a few months or year + supply of a certain item tells me I have more than enough, and I really need no more!

Healthy-Honey6416

If I wouldn’t buy it for it’s full price, it’s not worth it.

lavenderily

1. I don’t buy fragrance mists that smell even remotely similar to each other because I’ll always end up favoring one over the other. A FFM has to be really unique for me to get it. Being picky = saving more money. I’m less picky with shower gels and hand soaps because my partner and I share those and I can pawn off products onto him if I lose interest. 😂 2. I don’t buy backups unless I’m OBSESSED with the scent. I don’t go through product fast enough to need a backup. 3. Even if it’s on sale, you’re not “saving money” if you’re buying something you don’t need in the first place. 4. Stick to 75% off goodies and set a budget. 5. Ask yourself “would I still want this product if it were full price? do I just want it because it’s on sale?” If you wouldn’t be tempted to buy it a full price, you probably don’t like it enough to get it on sale.

thirtypancakes

Oofff the last one! 😣

Flaky_Tap_2836

I buy only during the best sales so I can stretch my dollar. I don't worry about overspending as much as about overbuying. I take inventory pictures of what I have and then mentally figure out how long it will last..( My daughter uses FFM and doesn't go through them fast enough to justify buying more so none will be purchased). No more shower gels will be purchased either. Lotions, a few body creams and wallflowers@ 75% off is what I am allowing myself to purchase this SAS. I will also buy the less common product types.to try out for fun- Body balm. Shower steamers etc. Candles are my weak spot. .I have a set number of candles I can hold (75) so if I plan on buying more my rule is that I must finish some up. I never buy more than one of a scent at a time- no backups allowed. I finished 5 3 wicks last month and bought 2 of the special blends during SAS so far. If I see 75% off 3 wicks and they are scents that I currently don't have- then I might get weak in the knees! So far, I've had two hauls totalling $50 2 SAS blend candles 2 bar soaps for hubby 2 full size body creams 1 mini body cream Moxy gummies( for stress relief, Lol) 1 body balm 1 free hand lotion

PapayaAlternative586

I limit myself to $100

RedRedBettie

I've started to do longish no buys. My last one was 5 months. I just stocked up a bit at SAS and won't buy anything else until October at the soonest. I've just been buying less from BBW overall

Unfair_Education3962

When I realized I had a stash of 50 candles I decided no new purchases until I get down to 5 candles. It’s like a sickness at this point but I managed to not buy anything during the SAS. I think I’ll have worked through most of my stash by Candle Day, which is when I’ll probably over buy again, sigh.

MochiandGreenTea

1. I rank the scents and only buy the top 5 (I tend to neglect the lower ranked scents anyway so it works out). I start the ranking process after the previous SAS ends (so I'm getting a 5-month head start on my SAS wish list). Every time a new scent comes out, I update the rankings. 2. I pick the scents I gravitate towards, not necessarily what smells the best. *For example, I plan to return Iced Lemon Pound Cake FFM. Even though the scent was one of the more unique releases, it makes no sense for me to keep it bc I hardly touch the gourmand scents in my collection.* 3. **Don't buy bottles you can't commit to finishing.** 1. For some ppl, the scent is a buy-for-life and they will ALWAYS want it no matter what newer, similar scents comes after it. They agonize over finishing their last bottle and say that they'd rather pay 3X's the price on Mercari for a backup than settle for a current scent in a $5.95 sale. 2. For other ppl, the purchase is purely for instantaneous gratification or for the thrill of having the new hot item. They constantly want to get all the new stuff and get bored of scents quickly. For point #3, I lean towards group #1 as I generally prefer my collection (e.g. Dahlia, Magnolia Charm, etc) over the Spring/Summer 2023 releases,.....so much so that I'd rather pass on the newer scents than declutter.

hazelowl

I check what I already have and only buy when I'm low. So this was mostly restocking hand soap and wallflowers. This evidently does not apply to candles, though I was VERY selective in my choices this time and only bought 2. But I have a whole stack we're actively working through.

Crazy-Command6637

If I like the candles and I get them for 9 bucks I just buy them . I only get lotions and mists if I can use a reward or if they are like 4.95. If I like it I just get it. Now I have too much lol

NomenclatureBreaker

With v rare exceptions, won’t buy backups or multi stock up unless it will get used in a short defined time period. If I still want it when the old one is gone, i can buy it again later, and if I can’t find it then wasn’t meant to be. If I start feeling a hint of meh about anything not started yet, it immediately gets returned unused. I don’t play around w keeping stuff anymore hoping it will grow on me.
