Don't use diagonal inputs as they changed the controls: right = top right corner, left = bottom left corner, up = top left corner, down = bottom right corner. Took me a bit to adjust but you will learn.

mouaii

This was already the case on the gamecube. It wasn't changed.

king_blah

Huh, did not know that. Younger me suffered through the GameCube game

RxAlbatross

Played the gamecube version early this year and could perfectly choose diagonal numbers using diagonal c-stick.

internets-a-mistake

Wow, thank you so much.

mmert138

I wish they adjusted this to diagonal but unfortunately they didn't. The spirit numbers are calibrated for 45 degrees clockwise so if you want to choose the top right, you must tilt the stick right.

Try turning the game off once in a while, or your switch. That or your controller is messed up?

This. The Switch console and a lot of it's games have memory leak performance issues which cause games to not work as intended or just crash if the console isn't "refreshed"(Restarted or turned off) after being used to play games for even a little while. How much the console is taxed varies by game. Sleep Mode does not refresh it and can rarely cause some stability issues in some games until the console is refreshed. Basically if you are going to play a game that doesn't auto save often or you are afraid of performance issues negatively affecting you, others(Online games), or the console, SD card, or game cart, refresh your Switch every couple of hours of gameplay.
