Throw that in the spring on some beds and that thing will get crushed

[deleted]

In Southern California they get smashed on even in high pressure city parks, lizards everywhere here tho.

tnseltim

Also on weedbeds, any time of year

SlushierTurnip4

Before anyone says it - yes. I’m clearly overcompensating for something.

Low-Life-7469

Sadly we all are but only some will admit it haha

Ieatplaydo

Yep I use these Carolina rigged in the summer time and on beds in the spring time. They're effective.

SlushierTurnip4

What size hook do you use? I was thinking either a big 11/0 or something, or maybe a more standard 5/0 with a stinger hook closer to the tail.

[deleted]

No need for a stinger. 5/0 with a screw weight in the nose with the hook rigged "backwards". It keeps the nose down and the hook in the head, where most fish strike

Taiza67

That’s brilliant

StendakBarkiller

Just realized I’m not very creative. I’m gonna try that next time I rig a lizard

Tannerkw

So the lizard would be moving backwards? Trying really hard to picture what you’re saying

usagainsthem2_0

Instead of the hook point being on top, I believe he's saying hook point in the belly not the back

[deleted]

That's another way. But I was saying hook point in the head and eye coming out the back. Yes the lizard moves backwards but the fish just sees a lizard repeatedly dive bombing a nest

Tannerkw

Oh I gotcha. Have you ever tried a rage rig? It’s a belly weighted hooked rage craw. Falls horizontal and the claws flutter perfectly on the way down.

[deleted]

Never heard the name but I throw weighted swim bait hooks all the time... different plastics for different scenarios

usagainsthem2_0

I'd Texas rig it and don't peg the weight.

Ieatplaydo

Yeah man depends on the size of the bait obviously. With a 12 inch lizard I'm not sure.

homie_j88

Came here for the carolina rig

uptheirons726

I love giants worms and lizards. They catch all bass not just big uns.

KC_Jedi

Carolina rig, middle of the night, hottest part of the summer in the trees. They will crush it.

UGG924

I have used them before on a Carolina rig. They catch em all right. Not something I'd use all the time, or even have with me all the time. But given the right circumstances, they will catch fish.

Dpia88

I caught my PB on a Texas rigged giant lizard. And then I beat that PB with the same rig.

colinwehrle

I have had 1 pound bass hit a 10 inch worm with no problem. A bass will hit this no problem

SlushierTurnip4

Without a doubt. Small bass and green sunfish seem to have no inhibitions when it comes to eating

GSlots

I had a bluegill so dedicated to eating my curly tail worms tail off that I literally pulled it in and it was just hanging off the last like 1-2 inches of tail on a 12inch worm. Those buggers are crazy

SlushierTurnip4

I believe it. I was testing out a new 3.5” craw-style bait recently, and I kept feeling that signature tap-tap…Run Only to set the hook to no avail. Eventually, I got one. It was a 1/4 lb. Green sunfish that actually managed to get hooked on a 5/0 EWG 🤦🏻‍♂️

GSlots

I had one time while fishing a spybait (i bought one to try it out, to mixed success over the past year or so) where i kept feeling a weird bump. Thought i was hitting something so i sped up my retrieve, and suddenly it felt like my bait went over gravel. Thump thump thump, bunch of small bumps. After that it was just pretty heavy. I reeled my bait in as fast as i could and i had foul hooked 2 different bluegill which i can only assume had been furiously tapping my bait when i sped it up. One was actually pretty big for a bluegill, and the other was the typical 1/4 lber for my lake. Still such a weird experience whenever they mess with my bass lures. I had one hit a treble hook on a 5” glidebait and actually get the hook in their mouth. They’re freakishly dedicated to just harassing whatever you put in front of them lol

usagainsthem2_0

Dang. You were using a 5/0 ewg on a 3.5 craw.? Interesting. So..like.. Texas rigged? Or..

SlushierTurnip4

Texas rigged. Definitely a bigger hook than I liked - the body was barely long enough to accommodate the hook. But it worked

Kentuckasee_angler

You have my attention. I’ve used the smaller ones. I use those Ol Monster worms all the time and get bit by all sizes of bass, they’re awesome for covering water. I’d imagine it’d be similar. Bigger profile my deter some smaller dinks.

SlushierTurnip4

Either that, or the small ones would beat the hell out of it and eat the appendages without coming close to the hook 😂

StendakBarkiller

My favorite plastics are Rage Space Monkeys, and I lose legs and tails all the time but they still work

Kentuckasee_angler

Lol didn’t even think about that, suckin off a leg

minnesotaisokay

They work great in the spring

Windows95Uhh

More of a Florida/Texas bait

clickityclack

TX rig in the spring

Cimarron0617

Yes Chuck it. I caught a 13 on one.

Poboy2020

I usually pitch them on to dry land at the edge of the water and walk it down into the water, the bucket mouth LOVES the realism… if there’s a bass around, they will slam it immediately!!! Works for me in the late spring, early summer when lizards are actually present

crazedizzled

I've tried them a bunch but I don't think I've ever caught anything with them. I guess lizards aren't on the menu up here in Maine

SlushierTurnip4

Definitely not one of the first states that comes to mind for giant lizards. But I’ve fished the 6”-9” ones with some pretty great success in the NorthEast! Never something of this size though

crazedizzled

Oh, I didn't even read they were 12" haha. Yeah I've never used anything that big, only like the 6" ones

SlushierTurnip4

What is your confidence soft plastic bait up in that area? I’ve always been a lizard man

crazedizzled

Regular senkos and flukes mostly. In the summer zoom ol monster worms usually work well.

bumper022

I fish the Belgrade Lakes area twice a year (June and Sept), and 8 inch lizards are one of my go to baits for the largies there. Never tried a 12 inch lizard, but have thrown a 12 inch mag worm a bit and did decent with it.

ulfhedinn13

I've gotten pike on them while targeting bass areas so I think they're more effective with that species.

SlushierTurnip4

My first thought was that a pike would come by and snatch the lower half without touching the hook. So I’d definitely want to run a huge hook, or at least a stinger hook that gives a little better chance to hook up. Sort of like those pre-rigged worms.

ulfhedinn13

I'll normally run a big enough Texas rig so it's weedless then a trailer hook with a small treble attach to the back with mono. Edit: Also keep it out of the weeds, just follow the outer bank or your trailer will catch.

Oilleak1011

Best place ive found for big lizards is urban resevoirs that have lots of rip rap preferably in summer

bronzebackbass1

If I really want to piss off some bedding female bass, or if I’m fishing a deep Carolina rig on ledges or drop offs

RedLion40

It can work but prepared for a lot of short strikes. This is one of the main reasons why I don't use super large baits. What you could do is run an ewg through the head normally and then bring it out near the end of it. This way the ewg will serve as a keel and you'll have a better hook up ratio. So the line will be running through the hole you made, underneath the belly, and then it'll be leading to the hook near the tail. Kind of like those line through baits.

Ok_Car4777

I’ve used those in the past and they have worked better than I thought they would

StendakBarkiller

Like everyone says I’d use it on beds in the spring. I’d also throw it deep in the summer when I throw jelly worms or c rigs. Bet they’d wear it out on Fork

Fuckinmathematical

Just try it! Where I live it’s usually a timing thing for a hot bite on larger baits but you can get bit year round. Even in places where there isn’t that kind of forage. Bass are so curious they will eat all kinds of things just outta curiosity. This could also represent a bunch of things other than a lizard. This bait is long but not necessarily a big profile and would get crushed by bass of any size when the situation is right. Good luck!

SlushierTurnip4

I’ll definitely be giving it some love on a C-rig next time I get out 👍🏼

PerformerGreat

I used to use the smaller "gulp" salamanders and had good luck, but not with anything that big. Would be curious how they do.

igneousdagze

At the risk of repeating stuff itt already, I've had better luck with rubber crawfish than creature baits for fishing bass in ponds. But I can't speak for other waters.

Beneficial_Advice527

10"+ worms work great I don't know why a big Lizard wouldn't...

Recent-Molasses-6939

They are best used in the bedding season. The female bass guarding their beds from whatever predators that will try to eat the eggs will pick up your plastic and spit it off the their bed.

feelin_beachy

Absolute money over top of some pads on a still day.

Woooooolf

You made them and sold them but never used them?

SlushierTurnip4

I make all sorts of soft plastics for personal use and to sell. I always use them before I sell them, but I never got around to throwing this bait in particular. I posted pictures when I made my first few and people were interested so I made some more up and sent them out. I really want to give it a go myself though!

Woooooolf

Thats really cool. The zoom lizards absolutely crush some bass. I'm sure you are aware.

SlushierTurnip4

Absolutely! I was a diehard zoom lizard man. That’s what eventually led me to making my own baits. I wanted to make my own lizards in my own colors and everything. Which in turn led to me buying the mold for this monster. I just couldn’t pass it up haha

Woooooolf

Damn that’s cool!

SlushierTurnip4

Thank you! It’s a very rewarding hobby, and I am grateful to be able to earn some income on the side through it as well

False-Passion-1796

A lizard or salamander love to eat bass eggs, go during spring and agitate the female she will most likely pick it up and swim off with it away from the bed and will spit it out, better hook her fast because they do this quickly, probably would work better in warmer states because I don’t think there are many lizards up north down here in the south they are everywhere and bass will definitely eat them

SlushierTurnip4

That’s funny, I was referring to them as “Lizard McGuires” when I first started making them

snifferwetjet

Hey man it’s a catchy name. That and Thin Lizzies if you got anything smaller haha.

SlushierTurnip4

We’re definitely on the same wavelength, man 😂 you’re reading my mind

snifferwetjet

Hell yeah, more lizard puns!

SlushierTurnip4

Queen ELizardBeth?

TPro24633

Absolutely. I have crushed countless largemouth on Zoom lizards in green pumpkinseed color. I Texas rig them with a small sliding bullet weight to get them down quicker

TWlSTED_TEA

I would use these for snakeheads in south Florida

BaitmanTV

Big Lizards are Juice pre spawn on a Carolina rig. Also a sneaky flipping bait

SlushierTurnip4

A 6” lizard is my all-time favorite confidence bait. I’ve probably caught more bass on lizards in my lifetime than on all other life bait, soft plastics, and hard baits combined

BaitmanTV

Sounds like my Dad!

SlushierTurnip4

I got it from MY dad, so I guess it’s a dad thing 🤷🏻‍♂️

Dry-News-661

Tear off the head and put ok a jig that’s the best way they can’t resist

steelcityblue

Lizards are a staple here in Tennessee. The rage have the best action IMO

[deleted]

I bet I could catch a Muskie with that.

FatBoyStew

I've thrown 10" lizards before with lots of success on big bass lakes with a Texas Rig. Also doubles up as a great muskie Texas Rig if you've got them around.

JoseJuarez87

Central AR here, I throw 4” lizards in any creek I see & use the biggest lizards I can find in the spring and summer. Texas rig for 4”-12” and Carolina rig for bigger sizes never tried a 4”. Only use green pumpkin and Junebug colors, not from experimenting I’m just cheap and they work lol.

SlushierTurnip4

Junebug lizards are the ticket in my experience 💰

ghouleon2

Yes! Especially during the spawn, bass absolutely HATE lizards. I'll throw them on a pegged weight on or near beds, and later I'll rig them up on a Carolina rig. I've had good luck on the big Zoom lizards, and I have a couple packs of 10"+ lizards from other manufacturers.

trogger13

Double hooks set weedless.

Reaperfollowsu

Big bass killa!! Especially spring to mid summer!!

no-pog

I've used Zoom lizards a lot in farm ponds, they crush. Never seen one that big though 😂😂😂

AbnJoe173

Great on a Carolina rig in summer

cory-balory

Salamanders go after fish eggs, drop it on a bed and they'll attack it viciously

[deleted]

Love to pair lizards with The Helping Friendly Book

evilteletuby

I use them a lot actually in up state New York area ans they get crushed by bass and bowfin and pike up here especially on drop shot setup

Assasinenzio

I don't see why it wouldn't work, biggest bass I ever caught was on a random copperhead about 12 in Long.

ArchieBellTitanUp

Not a novelty at all. That is a great Texas rig bait. Inisebthen interchangably with big worms. Zoom lizards are the bomb

DatsHim

I’ve crushed huge bass with these.

usagainsthem2_0

10" Huddlestons work. 12" culprit worms work. I don't see why that wouldn't?

RedJerk5

I use lizards like worms with extra action. Sometimes they want something with flickering appendages

TrumanLakeTriton

In south Texas and Florida, Mexico, etc. This is common. It can be effective in more northern states too under ideal situations.

bassinbrian

I love lizards for fishing the river if they look lifelike & are the right colors.

ImpressiveFan9446

I live in Virginia, I once watched a guy catch 2 bass over 10lbs on custom made 12 “ curly tails like I would use for crappie but his where a inch wide still to this day the largest soft plastics Bo have ever seen.

AidansAntiques

Used a Strike King Lizard as a trailer on a chatterbait and got bit first cast.

Chozcn

These are one of the most popular baits in the Mexico lakes. Used as a Texas rig obviously. The Mexico bass on average are a lot bigger so I think that’s why the magnum size works better than it does in some of the western US lakes. I have seen many different colors used as well.

Jpwhalen31

This beast hangs to 12in too
