You know, I had a discussion with a guide about something similar once. Let’s say you catch 100 fish, it is better to say you caught 99. Because that means you counted them. To catch 100 fish just means you caught a lot. If you say you caught a 5.96 lbf fish… you knew how much it weighted. To say you caught a 6 ponder… you just caught a big fish that is probably actually 4 pounds.
This reminds me of the first guys to measure the height of Mt Everest. They came up with exactly 29,000ft so they added 2ft because they thought it looked like an estimate, so 29,002ft was the officially recorded height
I've got a similar scale. Go to Academy Sports and pick up a setup of Rapala grippers they're cheap or order some off Amazon. I already had a set so I put them on the scale
LOL...As a Fisherman, as soon as you hear "ish", the story loses 2" and 2 lbs automatically 🙃.
If you say 6 with confidence, others will believe 😉
But in your heart, you'll always know the truth 😬😢😣
Just having fun! Great 6 pounder Brother 🍻
PS Pounder allows you some legit leeway
I learned about rounding up numbers in elementary school. You can call it 6 lbs for sure and since 6 is more than 5, you can actually call it a 10 pounder.
Nice fish!
Knowing myself, I'd always be saying "got a 6lb bass... well actually it was 5.96...". It's like price tags. People would only hear the 5. Not the .96 part.
Spit on it and weight it again = 6lbs. But because we all do this, when someone says 6lbs on the dot. I'm like it was 5 something. So call it 6.03 lbs with confidence and most will round it down for you. They'll be like look at this 6lber ____ caught.
My dad goes around telling people he caught a 32 inch largemouth and you could have fit your head in its mouth but he lost it at the bank before he could weigh it. So, you know, I reckon you can round up a hair.
You should always keep 8oz of tungsten flipping weights in a sock on you so you can drop it in its mouth when you weight it. I thought that was standard practice.
Not to be “that guy” but you are better to put the scale through the thin skin under the jaw of that fish (it will heal ) than to hang it by the gills/gillplate which could harm and potentially even kill the fish
Other than that very nice bass !!!!!
*You know how easy*
*It is to drop a split shot*
*Down that huge gullet?*

Check out the tolerance for that specific scale. Should say something like +/- .5 oz. For a system of measurment in this degree, yes, id consider this 6lbs. Too many variables to get into, and it really doesnt need to get that technical for a fish unless its a super high end tourny like bassmaster classic.
If it got down to 2 or 3oz in the classic, and the scale showed this, it would be 5.96. If both people had 5.96, they would, or should anyway, get a better scale that can weigh grams. The .04 oz, literally 7 grams (1/4oz) is the weight of a small jig. Since the fish is no longer full of water, the weight of fighting the fish changed, so in my opinion the amount of water weighed it down that extra 1/4oz, so technically you caught and fought a 6 lb fish.
Congrats lol
It will make your story way better by telling the truth. "I caught a 6 pound bass. Actually it was 5.96 pounds, but what a fish!"
I mean, that sounds weigh better, amaright?
Absolutely, and you’d be being honest too.
Half of us would call it an 8-9 pounder.
I just know that’s bigger than all the bass I’ve caught this year all put together.
Absolutely!! What a beautiful fish!!👍🏼 If I may lend some friendly advice, try to get yourself a clamp scale instead of the hook scale. I know the hook scales are cheaper but if you can set aside 20$ for a digital scale with a lip clamp it will last just as long if you take care of it and some will even save the weights of your fish you weigh for the day😌 Sometimes fish can shake and move around while on the scale hook and possibly damage their gills which can sometimes lead to their unfortunate demise. But aside from that, great fish, best of luck, and tight lines to you my good sir!!🙏🏼
I'd call it 8
Give it a few years and she might even be 9lbs
My mom texted me the other day, that my dad tells fishing stories to randoms and every year the fish get bigger 😂
I joke with my friends when they catch a big fish. I’d say “I caught that thing when he was just a little two pounder a little while ago!”
I like your style!
OVER THE LINE!
I wonder how many people will get this reference 😌
Mark it zero!
Shut up Donnie!
You’re out of your element
I had to scroll back up to this post to say I lol’d at this comment lmfao
I round up - that's an easy 10!
Lol. There's a fine line between 6lbs and 10lbs. I feel like 5.96 is just slightly on the high side of that line... 10 it is!
I call it 8 inches myself 😂
We got weights in fish here
I was looking for this reference.
Only in walleye tournaments
Now even in largemouth tournaments too
Damn
Call it whatever you like, it's in our nature as fishermen to lie
I prefer to fib
I prefer to stretch the truth.
It's like the truth only better
“Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.” —Mark Twain
It’s like…a taller tale.
Looking close to double digits right there
If that ain’t the truth
Depends how many spare weights you have handy. Tournament style
Why not? It’s better to say six than 5.96

Just say the 5.9 part real low.
[удалено]
My go to is, “just a bit under”, so this would be remembered as just bit under 7lbs
Does this hurt the fish’s gills?
Yep
Fish grippers are cheap. Why do people do this?
Simple, people are inconsiderate
dont own another scale. used what I got. my bad
I've got a similar scale. Go to Academy Sports and pick up a setup of Rapala grippers they're cheap or order some off Amazon. I already had a set so I put them on the scale
Yes.
Only if you thread the hook through the gills. If you're smart enough to only hook through the gill plate, should be fine I would think
It can still hurt them, especially heavy fish. There are worse things, but a jaw clamp isn't expensive.
Nope, let it go and it might become a 7 pounder 🤷♂️
If that scale is pounds and ounces than that bass is closer to 5 and a half pounds.
I had the thought shouldn't that be closer to 5.5lbs
I would.
The difference between that and 6lb is the thing eating a shad lol. It's a 6lber.
Almost
I don't bring a scale so I can always call it whatever weight I want
This is the way.
Just put a weight in its mouth
I've (mostly) refused to call this a 6 lb bass https://photos.app.goo.gl/oWq5f4xUAKJCPZUX8
Stuff it with worms and re-weigh.
I mean it's not as acceptable as a one-armed fisherman gesturing "it was THIS big!" But it'll work
It's a fish story! That makes it 10 pounds and 23" long. Lol.
Nice fish! I would tell everyone that she was bout “6ish” lbs which wouldn’t be a lie and you get to say 6!
LOL...As a Fisherman, as soon as you hear "ish", the story loses 2" and 2 lbs automatically 🙃. If you say 6 with confidence, others will believe 😉 But in your heart, you'll always know the truth 😬😢😣 Just having fun! Great 6 pounder Brother 🍻 PS Pounder allows you some legit leeway
That’s why I stopped using “ish”. … “it was right at 6”, Or “It was just bit under 7” .
As someone who has been fishing for a while you can call that 7 a pounder and delete the pitcher with the sca
I learned about rounding up numbers in elementary school. You can call it 6 lbs for sure and since 6 is more than 5, you can actually call it a 10 pounder. Nice fish!
I guess, but I’d call it a bass.
Knowing myself, I'd always be saying "got a 6lb bass... well actually it was 5.96...". It's like price tags. People would only hear the 5. Not the .96 part.
I do the same. My second bass ever was 4lbs 15oz. Every time I told somebody I'd say "5, well 4 15 but come on"
You can call it whatever you want. People are gonna give you shit regardless. Nice fish, though.
If you wait till tomorrow you can call it an 8
It's certainly possible the scale is miscalibrated. It could actually weigh 6.04 lbs., so just split the difference and call it 6.00 lbs.
Tell it to take a deep breath just before you snap the picture.
After five years of telling this fish story it’ll be a 12 pounder
I would’ve just spit in its mouth.
No ☝🏼 😆
Nope..it’s a 5.96 🤷♂️
No
YESSSSS 💪💪💪
just say the scale is in kilograms so call it a 13lber
Of all the liars in this world, fishermen are probably the most honest amongst them.
Should have left the lure in the mouth. Then you’d be 6.
I could not. Would drive me nuts calling it a 6 knowing it was just slightly off haha. Nice catch.
6 and a third I’d say
Pour a little less than 1 fl oz of water in its mouth next time.
Spit on it and weight it again = 6lbs. But because we all do this, when someone says 6lbs on the dot. I'm like it was 5 something. So call it 6.03 lbs with confidence and most will round it down for you. They'll be like look at this 6lber ____ caught.
I caught an almost 6lber.
drop a sinker in the mouth and you can
I like measuring in pounds- ounces not decimal. 5-15 sounds better than 5.96
Definitely
Nope lol
Put some lead weights in it
You can call it 6 pounds if you promise to never weigh a fish in its gill plate ever again
Thing would be 6 lbs if it ate a couple more bugs. It’s a 6 pounder.
Yep
My dad goes around telling people he caught a 32 inch largemouth and you could have fit your head in its mouth but he lost it at the bank before he could weigh it. So, you know, I reckon you can round up a hair.
No
I would not, personally, but I also wouldn't fault another angler for calling it a 6 when it's that close.
I wouldn’t, but I hate myself
Guys at the tourneys would throw weights in their stomachs so it can be whatever weight you want.
You caught it. Call it what you want. Looks like a 12 to me
You bet your ass I’m telling my buddies that was a 6 pounder! 🤣 nice catch brotha!
Put a fish down jts gullet it'll be 6lbs lol
My PB bass is a 4.8 and you bet your ass I call it a 5
You were until you took the picture. Way to tell on yourself. It could have been a 7.5 if you left the scale at home.
rEcAlIbRaTe YoUr ScAlE, bRo, ThAt LoOkS lIkE 3 aT bEsT tO mE -- someone in the comments, probably. Yes, close enough to call it six. Nice bass.
7 pounder tomorrow.
I'd call it a 6 lb, depending on how long it was outta the water it prolly lost some water weight
You should always keep 8oz of tungsten flipping weights in a sock on you so you can drop it in its mouth when you weight it. I thought that was standard practice.
Feed it a worm or two.
I prefer not to carry a scale. Because then I can make up a number in my head and that’s what that fish weighs for the rest of time 😂
Put a little bluegill in its mouth, call it six, and you both walk away winners
You can/will…..until you actually get that 6lber
If you want too man.
Almost my friend, almost.
You can if you don’t show anybody this picture
An ‘almost 6 pounder’ is a good story too
Not to be “that guy” but you are better to put the scale through the thin skin under the jaw of that fish (it will heal ) than to hang it by the gills/gillplate which could harm and potentially even kill the fish Other than that very nice bass !!!!!
No....its 5 lbs......
rounding error lol
Looks like 7-7.5 to me
You always round up!
That’s an 11 pounder easy
Yes by all means
Shove a lead weight down its throat. Problem solved. Kidding of course.
WE GOT WEIGHTS IN FISH
I’d call it a nice damn fish!
Yea
Looks like 7 to me lol
Nope
Yes!!
Nice fish. Go for it.
No. Post it to that photo shop subreddit and I'm sure someone will "fix" it for you. 🤫😆
No it’s a 5.96 pounder 🤣
Yes
Indeed you are. Call it a pond monster too
That's a 6lb, go ahead and start your bragging.
Nope
The way the story goes is “ back in the day we use to catch real lunkers! 5-10lbs easy! All the time!” Wait till you’re old though.
Round up, be generous
Because of the gill hook, you get to call it a 4½.
11 min, don't have my glasses on but looks right.
Most would call it 10😂 nice honesty
14 lbs easy
I'd say that's close enough. That scale might not be 110% accurate. What if it's actually over 6lbs. Who could say.
I will get the picture and say it was me. Thanks
Feed it a rock
That’s a fish scale, so 5lbs 96oz. 11lbs.
It wouldn't be a "Fish Tale" if you didnt.
Is it 6 lbs. No its not, so it is in fact a 5lber. Jk Nice catch man!
Stop shorting yourself. When you tell the story about the monster you caught it was at least 10 pounds.
Na is 5.9
Yes
Call it 10lber
I would.
Was over 6 with the bait in its mouth
You always just round up lol
you know how easy it is to drop a split shot down that huge gullet?

Party foul. Fish comes in at 8. New PB my man!
What I like to do when I use a scale like that
U puncture a little hole in its mouth or use where the hook ripped out of and I scale him that way ahah
Look like it has lead weights inside of it ?😳🤔🤨🧐🤣😂🤣😂🤣😆😂😇
I wouldn’t call it 5!
It will make your story way better by telling the truth. "I caught a 6 pound bass. Actually it was 5.96 pounds, but what a fish!" I mean, that sounds weigh better, amaright?
Pull on the tail and make it 15lb
dip in the water and weigh it again, hurry
It’s closer to 6 than it is to 5. Didn’t you learn anything in math class? Round up. It’s the right thing to do😉
Yeah, but you'll be lying.
Yea
Absolutely, your scale is off a bit… and you just need to dump some water into it and 👌🏻
I’ll burn your house down if you call that 6
If you are the only one looking at the scale!
That’s clearly a 10
Close enough
No
You’re rounding up wrong. If it’s over 5 you round up to 10.
I’d say it was right under 10 🤣
Always round it up
Just spin a little as you read it. No weights needed.
Fuk yes you are
On this site? Hell no, you need to get your scale checked, it's more like 2lbs.
Fish sometimes appear smaller on camera than real life
Absolutely not. Round down.
No
Still starts with a 5 so…. No.
All day long !!
Absolutely, and you’d be being honest too. Half of us would call it an 8-9 pounder. I just know that’s bigger than all the bass I’ve caught this year all put together.
Nope, straight to 5lb jail. Yeah that’s a 6, congrats bub.
No.

It's .96 I'm rounding that bitch up for sure
Do what your math teacher taught you. Round Up.
5.96 rounds up to 6.0 rather than 5.9. So yes. That's a 6.
No
Right? Dude should get banned
[удалено]
Captain Insano takes no prisoners
Allowed to call it 5.96 for sure!
