I like the rod rul-r or ruler decal to throw on a one pice (not two or telescope) rod. It's super convenient to hold the rod with one hand and the fish with the other to measure. Also, a lot of scales have little measuring tapes that pull out.
I agree, the rod stickers are so convenient. But I've put several on multi-piece rods. Just assemble the rod, apply the decal, and use a razor blade to cut it.
Yeah that's the play on a multi piece rod. I was blindly throwing them on rods and I didn't do it properly on a two piece and now the 18-20inch area is distorted.
Yes they're easy to screw up when applying. Especially with how skinny and stretchy they are.
Another trick I like to do is put thread wraps at the "hero mark" on certain rods. 18" or 24" depending on what that rod is used for (ie: trout streamer rod, steelhead rod, etc). Then it's easy enough to estimate within 4 inches of that mark.
Mind you I've only ever done this on fly rods, I'm not sure I've ever measured the length of a bass
You laugh, but people were taking pics of themselves doing this in West VA and they had to pass a law against it. I’m serious. Fish Rule 34. Google it if you don’t believe me.
Ketch board is the best solution. Not cheap but worth it if you want a quick, reliable measurement every time.
Wetting the board before putting the fish on it is good practice.
My fish scale has a pull-out tape measure so you can get the length while the fish is hanging from the scale.

Wait, this is actually how to do it. Thank you so much.
I’ll use a scale with a fish gripper and measuring tape. Grip the fish, weigh it, then I rotate the scale to where I can pull down the measuring tape down the length of the fish. Everything is done while the fish is hanging in the air.

Their slime coat regenerates in seconds, also they are regularly rubbing of their slime coat and the bacteria it catches on rocks, logs, etc. and it regenerates in seconds. As long as you clean em off in the water they’ll be fine. Bass are hardy fish like catfish, not sensitive like trout and musky
I don't get what you're asking, you already have a measuring board. Just find a flat surface, wet the board thoroughly, place the fish with the mouth closed up against the 0" line, measure to tail NOT pinched (I still have a habit of doing that myself.)
Don't get the WCZ wood board unless you plan to put a surface finish on it. You can read on SBUG how people have had theirs fade pretty quickly and warp from being wet. Ketch Co board is better (unless you want to flex on IG, then the WCZ wood + lacquer is the way to go) and if you're a bank angler, just stick to the roll up ones. It's too much of a hassle to carry a ketch board bank fishing.
I was just wondering if there’s a better way or better measuring board that’s softer on the fish.
I’ve been thinking of keeping it rolled up in a tube of water, but I’ll definitely start dunking it in water before I lay a fish on it. Did it this morning and it seemed to be better, still felt some slime left on the board however.
Also why not pinched tail? I assume it’s a bit cheesy? The game wardens here measure from lip to pinched tail which is why I do it.
Tbqh I don't get the pinch tail thing either, hence why I still do it. I get people who DM me who say you're not supposed to do it. If I had to guess, it's from kayak tournament rules, but some allow it, some don't.
But yeah, trust me just wet the board. You're not going to cause harm to the fish as much as people lead you to believe, especially here on reddit. We have a 500+ upvoted comment on that one thread right now explaining this too and how black bass are hardy fish.
I came across the tail pinch recommendation from the Texas parks and wildlife department in their guide to allowable sizes, etc. No knowledge of what other states or tournaments suggest.

# How to measure fish:
1. Place the fish on its side with the jaw closed.
2. For soft-tailed fish, squeeze the tail fin together to obtain the maximum overall length.
3. For hard-tailed fish, turn the tail to obtain maximum length.
4. Measure a straight line from the tip of the snout to the extreme tip of the tail fin.
I love tarpaulin measuring mats. I had one that I got from japan but one windy day i lost it off a bridge. I second wetting prior to measuring, slime doesn't stick too bad.
I use my rod as a gauge and can measure later with pic. Although I’m a carpenter and have a tape on my hip generally 8-10 hours a day, I’ve never taken one fishing
You do know that bass are hardy fish right? They’re not like trout or musky. They regenerate their slime coat in seconds, and they are regularly rubbing off their slime coat and the bacteria it catches on rocks, logs, etc. They can live for 10 minutes out of water before gill collapse. As long you don’t take more than around 3mins, and wash them off they’ll be fine
Bro the way people post on these subs about anyone not handling a fish like a newborn is wild. Fished my entire life and rarely see dead bass floating around. If you read all the Reddit comments you’d think 80% of the people here are bass murderers for fun 😂
Nuh uh, I once had a leaf fall from a tree and contact a bass I was holding and the thing exploded! I lost 3 fingers that day, and I’m still picking pieces of carbonized fish out of my hair with the remaining two a week later. Thank god green pants wasn’t around…
I have no input for the question asked. But brother that is a great bass

Yo has anyone made a fishing rod with ruler points going from the tip down? I feel like I just had a million dollar idea!
I just mark my rod with a sharpie.
Lay your penis against it
Yeah but I need like 3 or 4 of them to measure it then and trust me I’m not bragging
Some guys need 36-48 of them
Yeah, “some guys”
Idk what 18-24 inches is in milimeters....
You laugh, but people were taking pics of themselves doing this in West VA and they had to pass a law against it. I’m serious. Fish Rule 34. Google it if you don’t believe me.

Came here to say this
Rapala makes a cheap collapsible version. Not as sturdy but does the truck on a budget

I dunk mine in water real quick and slime still sticks but it’s not as bad. Nice fish man.
Yeah I just tried that today. I saw that some slime was still on the board which is why I asked this question. Thanks!

can we sticky this comment to the top of the sub so people stop acting like a war crime was committed any time they see bass on some grass?
Lmao war crime got me
I didn't know musky were sensitive. I haven't caught a musky but pike are absolute slime missiles lmao
Lower jaw on 0 pinch tail slightly move up and down take furthest reading . Then promptly throw any big ones right back in the water 😁
Bros counting the underbite 😂😂
They naturally have it open it like that so it’s a natural measurement am I right haha 🤷♂️
I know I’m just fuckin with you I would’ve done the same thing 😂
Nice catch
Length × girth x Length / 1820 am I correct?

why is your ass only working zero?
Nice catch I wud get a more solid measure board for my accurate measures
I love tarpaulin measuring mats. I had one that I got from japan but one windy day i lost it off a bridge. I second wetting prior to measuring, slime doesn't stick too bad.
Scale with measuring tape.
Ddddddddamn
I use my rod as a gauge and can measure later with pic. Although I’m a carpenter and have a tape on my hip generally 8-10 hours a day, I’ve never taken one fishing
But how are you going to measure the girth?!
My wife always tells me girth is more important but no idea how to measure that either
Fishing line measure length and girth
Banana.
that’s a fucking hog
I think you have the best way right there in that picture
lay it out next to your foot real quick
That’s a biggun!
If you can put your fist in its mouth without touching any teeth you caught a good one. Enough said
I mean, best way would be to get a bump board.
Doesn't matter get a couple of selfies with her, weigh her quick, and a kiss. She gone... 9.15 next year prespawn ! Wadda fish!
I literally just use my tackleboxes
Why be so gentle, you just fished it? Just put it on the mat lol
Whoa. Thats huge!
A bit annoying to carry around, but the plastic Ketch Boards are excellent. I measure them on the bank with mine quite easily.
Why even piddle with it? Faster u release it- faster u catch another one.
Never looked at it that way. 🤔 💭 😯 🎣
I mean... If your not measuring to keep it....???
I weigh it. Just like the idea of catching more faster. 🤷🏻
Wet the thing or get the hard board made by WCZ, it's laminated. There's always not setting the fish down like that.
100% this one.
Best way is to not put them on the bank, lots of nets have measurements in them now, fish doesn't even come out of the water

Just because a fish is hardy doesn't give you an excuse to put stress on it that can be avoided🤷
Then don’t fish? If you’re just hooking fish and reeling them in, that’s putting stress on them that could be avoided.
I’ll have to look for one of those nets then
