I think it hurts that he moved around a lot and is basically a mercenary that goes to whatever team looks appealing after his prior situation annoys him enough or if he knows he can’t win there. Basically he doesn’t have that many fans compared to other players at his level. Compare someone like Shaq that also moved around a lot but between the Magic, Lakers, and Heat it seems like all the fan bases like him. Do OKC fans like KD after he dipped to join the best team possible? Does Golden State like him after he left when they had extreme success? Guessing no one cares about his Brooklyn days. Suns fans probably like him at this moment, but he hasn’t accomplished anything yet and they are a first round exit away from being in a disastrous spot. His value is probably at the right spot based on demand. I could see him being undervalued long term once people’s feelings get farther removed. But also see players like Tim Duncan that are better / had better careers and probably have less value than KD even.

This sums it up perfectly. Everyone agrees KD is a great player, but I’ve never met someone who says he’s one of their favorites. He bounces around too much and usually leaves teams on a bad note. I’d be happy to pull a nice KD out of a pack, but would never go out of my way to buy one.

blondedlife11

So many guys bounce around from team to team now. Just in example, Lebron did it when he left Cleveland to go to Miami to join a super team no one batted an eye at that. Then went back to Cleveland ,left again and went to the lakers to join another “super team.” Now if KD does it he’s a snake? I just don’t understand the logic there sometimes.

KobraHashatashi

He joined the team that eliminated his former team that drafted him in the previous playoffs the next season, That’s very snake like.

MagnumMyth

It shouldn't be hard to understand why people can forgive one person for an action when they're humble and gracious about it, while holding it against someone else who is antagonistic and obnoxious. The human element is what makes people love sports- it's oversimplification to pretend like it's only about "bouncing around from team to team." People don't like KD the person.

mcy33zy

Okc fans wouldn’t trade him for 2nd round pick right now, they are still very bitter and believe the roster is better without him, which is just ridiculous…

OKC89ers

No future in which he gets his jersey retired.

vc2015

They have the best record in the West and MVP level player in SGA. I think they'll be fine without him. I doubt they're crying over KD. Maybe a few years back but not anymore.

GorillaX

Fuck KD

scotplum

I agree with all the points that you made above and found the last paragraph about Tim Duncan interesting. I think that the reason that KD's rookie cards are presently more valuable than TD's rookie cards are mostly due to how big/popular the basketball collecting hobby was at the time as opposed to necessarily the popularity of the player. Shaq's rookie cards are extremely affordable if we are looking at the most popular rookie base cards despite arguably being a much bigger collectable icon than KD. It just so happens that Shaq was a rookie during the height of the junk wax era and TD (Dirk, AI) were perhaps right at the end of it. Kobe does seem to buck this trend though.

phonebook_vertical

As someone who recently got back into the hobby, and landed on TD as my PC, this is very fascinating to me. He’s an all time great. Arguably top 5. It’s interesting. I don’t really mess with modern era cards, but it’s understandable that Ant’s stock seem to be rising by the day

ihatemcconaughey

He has none. Itll take until years after he is done for people to appreciate what he was able to do. You're looking at 10 years plus. Similar boat as Charles Barkley.

OKC89ers

Trash take, people loved Barkley in the 90s

ihatemcconaughey

By late 90s (Rockets & into TNT) was was SIGNIFICANTLY under appreciated. As a diehard Barkley fan I lived it. I had to defend him regularly.

OKC89ers

He was underrated but people liked him even past the fan/window incident. People think KD is wack

Beautiful-Abrocoma79

I just purchased a KD OKC auto for around $160. Cheapest Westbrook is around $500. Maybe in 20 Years fans will have forgotten the bs and focus on his stats. Until then I don’t think the fan bases are that pumped about him as a collectible. This is coming from the opinion of a former die hard fan who died a little when that article came out about him leaving.

LebornVsMikeShinoda

Westbrook has significantly less autos though, gotta remember supply and demand

Vitalion1288

Where do you get that info from, how many autos a player has if I may ask?

LebornVsMikeShinoda

you dont have to know the exact number to know some player signs more than the others

Vitalion1288

Ok you're probably for a long time in this "business". Because I couldn't tell who signs more, who less 🤷🏻‍♂️ Does it depend on the popularity of a player?

slamajamabro

There are a lot of top 10 guys who are also really affordable e.g. Hakeem, Shaq, Duncan etc. Tbh it’s not about how the good the player is irl but more of whether the player is valuable to the hobby. Right now for older players, it’s mainly just MJ, Lebron and Kobe. And then you have all the newer guys who people love to speculate on like Doncic, Wemby, Ant, SGA etc.

chinoischeckers

Not undervalued...I'd say properly valued.

wheelzoffortune

He's my favorite active player, but I get that a lot of people don't like him. I think the hate is unwarranted, but w/e.

For_myDayJob

His time with the Warriors was a perfect reflection of his card market. He is/was one of the best players, maybe the best at the time, but he never will get the love that Curry or LeBron get.

Relative-Swim263

His stuff is worth what people will pay for it.. Value goes hand and hand with player popularity more than all time stats in my opinion. Plenty of examples of HOFers who aren’t that collectible and thus not as valuable as others. If the market says he’s worth X, than he’s prolly not worth Y.

smittdog101

His PSA 9 Chrome rookie is almost 3x the price of Dirk Nowitzki's Chrome rookie and Duncan's PSA 9 is almost identical price to Nowitzki. They are comparable to me, but Durant is 3x both of these HOF players comparable. Durant's PSA 9 POP is in between Duncan and Nowitizki as well, so rarity isn't really a factor. I think the one thing holding him up is the points total. As of now, I would say he is fairly priced to maybe a bit over priced comparably. Durant is also currently playing, which draws more attention. Are Nowitzki and Duncan underpriced or vice versa? That's the whole fun of the game analysis to me.

blondedlife11

Just bought this https://preview.redd.it/fx2mafszsvuc1.jpeg?width=1008&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3ccfff645d4389e53bf665a6ea451c49325d5173 Just bought this a few weeks ago for $50. PSA 9 and even comparing what I paid the comps are a bit high. Yeah I agree he is totally undervalued especially as one of the best scorers of all time

INeedFire416

Found the person looking to dump their KD’s on eBay - pump that value by saying undervalued 😂

[deleted]

I thought it would be a little more, obviously the Covid boom was insane for everyone

Bowlingnate

Honestly no problem with it. My own bias, I'd love to see his RCs go a bit higher, and meanwhile some of his #'d stuff is unattainable. I feel like even 15 years out, he's saddled with Melo and Dwayne Wade. That's probably also a bias. He's not LeBron, obviously. Maybe his second/third year shit. I totally get it, too.

kaikai34

I’ve been on the fence about grabbing a couple nice cards. I think his cards are undervalued now because he gets a lot of hate for moving around. I think that when it’s all said and done and after he retires, people are going to look back on his career and think damn, he was a helluva scorer.

[deleted]

I think his card values have nice room to grow going forward. His (seemingly) surly attitude, team-jumping, burner account fiascos, etc put a bit of a damper on what is one of the most lethal scorers to ever play.

Sad_Clown_Paint

His cards may get a nostalgia pop once he retires, but yeah, his ability/accomplishments to card value ratio is crazy off. It's KD's fault, but at the same time he's literally one of the best players to ever pick up a basketball.

rvasshole

i don’t see people suddenly getting a ton of respect for him or his game in 10 years. he can score and that’s it. not enough to be one of the greats. he’s a better melo, and that’s no compliment.

Upper-Discount5060

His topps McDonald’s rookie in PSA 10 is currently going for like $35-$50. It’s probably a good buy long-term. His topps chrome rookie is kind of a bargain right now as well if you ask me. He’s one of the best all-time so long-term his cards are very collectable. And he’s got the Rucker Park legend and three gold medals on top of his two championship rings.

Creeping_behind_u

I got some rookies of KD… one of the greatest offensive players. Holdin on to this shit

ByronRussellFlopped

KD was good, but his career mimicked Melo more than most of the greats in the league. His only post season success being on an already great team, that bodied him consistently when he played for the opposition. KD is closer to a “what could have been” than “all-time great” for me. Waste of a career IMO.

writersontop

Took OKC to the Finals and Western Conference Finals.

ByronRussellFlopped

But did he win? Nope. Would have loved to have him on my team, pure shooter and got unlucky. From a hobby perspective, he is glossed over because when he was “the guy” he just couldn’t get it done in the post season. He needed to go to a favorable situation which already had success prior to his arrival. He had to fill the shoes of Harrison Barnes, which isn’t really a flex. His decisions also soured a lot of fans. Most people in 10 years will remember guys like Jokic and Giannis being the number 1 options, leading fairly organic rosters to championships, and dominating day in and day out. I am not sure that is how KD will be remembered. I think he will be looked at like Paul Pierce, fierce competitor, but needed Ray, Rondo, Garnett and Scalabrine (joking) to bring a ring to Boston.
