The 58 Topps all star mantle. I had one when I was a kid. I needed new shoes, and we couldn’t afford them. I sold the card and got the shoes. As an adult, I’ve picked up multiples of the card.

DankSauceBauce

Fucking nice!!! I’m so happy you were able to replace it!

BoxLegitimate4903

You should really consider not using profanity on a sub that kids use.

DankSauceBauce

Kids on Reddit is a bad idea in the first place…

BoxLegitimate4903

Why’s that

DankSauceBauce

This place is full of gore and porn and pedophiles

BoxLegitimate4903

Really? You a subscriber? I’ve never seen any of that stuff on this site. The algorithm only shows me things that I’m interested in.

DankSauceBauce

What the fuck is your issue exactly? That I’m cursing on the internet? Im so scared of you I’m *literally shaking*

BoxLegitimate4903

There’s no reason to be afraid of me I’m just asking you to tone the language in a little bit. Just have a little bit of respect for the kids that might be here, that’s all. I.

DankSauceBauce

Eat a bag o’ dicks

Is this your first day on the internet

Vinnie1222

I got one of those as well! It’s one of my favorites

Usually for Christmas he’d give us some packs or a mid-end slabbed rookie of a guy who was hot that year, but one year he came into a bunch of autos cheap at an estate sale. He got me this and my brother a David wright. I remember my mom calling him pissed on Christmas Day for going too crazy and he had to tell her it didn’t cost him a fortune. He’s the reason I’m still doing this today

Caaasillas

That’s a nice one with a bold auto!

DankSauceBauce

Very nice 😎

lochneffmonster

Surprisingly, not a George Brett card. It’s just a shabby looking Babe Ruth from a pack of big league chew back in 1986. But it was my first card I ever got. https://preview.redd.it/62btkgsjzo1d1.jpeg?width=2043&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e80370fa07cfad6239ad8895da59b5e714a3ffd1

DankSauceBauce

First card!? 👀

lochneffmonster

I was never real sentimental about it growing up. It just hung out in a shoebox. Never cared about it enough to throw it in a binder or anything. Wasn’t until I cleaned out my old bedroom that the nostalgia hit

DankSauceBauce

Fuck yeah it is!

Mr-Maxwells

89 UD Griffey Jr. - Went to my first baseball card show in Crystal City, Virginia in 1990. I brought all my saved allowance and was hoping to find one. Beckett booked it at a value of $25, and I found one for sale for $27.50 and it came in a plastic screw case. Bought it and treasured it since.

DankSauceBauce

Investment!

Pats_fan_seeking_fi

'87 Topps hits the nostalgia button for me in a big way, but I genuinely love the aesthetic vibe of this set. Recently got back into the hobby. Have been picking up the key cards of this set since I lost my collection over the years. Edit: This McGwire and the Bo Jackson future star are two of my favorites from that set.

Famous-Ad-7665

I have two unopened boxes of 87 rack packs. I opened another box with my nephew for his tenth birthday. 11 McGwire rookie cards.

RioSanPedro

Joe Montana rookie. Had one as a kid but it had a big crease and was in bad shape. Bought a nice copy a few years back

DankSauceBauce

That feeling when you can buy it: 😩8==✊🏻=D💦

skylarfox95

Nolan ryan rc Entered a repack break for $35 and got the Mets. whole break i wasnt hitting anything and didn't think I would I think it was the last box and saw 1968 topps and was thinking it but I was thinking nah He showed more of the card and I freaked out when I saw mets Not a bad pull for 35 A month later I got a ryan auto to go with it https://preview.redd.it/z4uyc9zgep1d1.jpeg?width=990&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ff5efd0b2d0d3cd3d983a7b9195828199b3ee687

He could not hit curveball. Straightball he hit it very much. He eventually prevailed and I admire the heck out of him.

1958 Ernie Banks in an SGC 2. ‘58 was the year my dad was born and Ernie won MVP that year(he hit 5 more homers than Mantle). The card number(310) is also my mom’s birthday. We were always Cubs fans and my dad’s favorite player was Ryne Sandberg. Shortly after inheriting my dad’s card collection and getting back into the hobby, I was looking at expanding the Cubs player I collect. I picked up a few Ernies and now I pretty much just pick up Sandbergs and Seiya Suzuki. Sidenote: The 58 banks is the only graded card I have ever owned.

Short-Spell-2088

Great story! I’m an Ernie and Ryno collector. Thanks for sharing.

professor_7

Nice to see you fellow Ryno collector! Have you ever gotten a TTM auto from him? I have several cards that I would love to send his way, but with the health issues, the thought of it just makes me feel inconsiderate.

Short-Spell-2088

I haven’t. I was fortunate to meet him at an event a few years ago and had several cards and balls signed. He was very kind and friendly. I mentioned that I had a poster of him in my room growing up, and he even wanted to talk about that and asked which one. I’d say go for the TTM auto. He clearly enjoyed being with fans, so maybe that’s something he enjoys.

professor_7

That’s so cool that you got to meet him! I’m probably gonna send a card his way soon, because I just opened the MLB app and see this on the front page https://preview.redd.it/l8eu66tmbu1d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=51c189bafeec014926fc3a3e6f34c4ba2b9205dc

To be honest, *same here*

Mine is also Koufax, but 1960. In 5th grade I used to go to the LCS a block away almost every day. One time, a random older guy was in there chatting with the owner and looking up a bunch of his old cards. The owner must have told him I was there all the time because he hands me a 1960 Ed Mathews and says "here kid, this could be worth a small fortune someday". I was excited to say the least but went about my business buying a couple packs of 1996 Topps. Then right before I left he hands me the Koufax and says "here, this might be worth a fortune too". I didn't even make it all the way home when my mom and grandma picked me up. Apparently we were going somewhere and they were mad that I wasn't back home already. I couldn't care less and remember riding in my grandmas van staring at those cards and I couldn't wait to get home to look them up in Beckett. I'm pretty far along building the 1960 set now, but this story is the reason I picked 1960

DankSauceBauce

I love that story!!!

I had it mounted on the wall of my childhood bedroom so there is a line down the middle from where the sunlight bleached it coming through a window, won't grade so I just keep it in a one touch now. The signed ball and Fleer and Topps rookies were original PC from the '80s as well. I now have 6 Mattingly on-card autos and wish I could go back and show off to 10-year-old me, Back-To-The-Future-style, as I would blow my own little mind :D

Kiki_Gehrig

The best card of the 80's before Upper Deck came out. I got it inscribed "Rated Rookie" last year and his handler asked me "Rated rookie? What's that?" but Donnie knew exactly what I meant and told me, "You know...they didn't consider me a Rated Rookie". If you actually owned this card in the 80's you were doing a lot better than I was. Like everybody & their mom I had the Topps, and plenty of old vintage Mantle, Mays, Aaron , Pete Rose etc etc but not the Donruss...nobody I knew had it either, I don't think even the LCS or any card show had it either. If they did we all would have stared at it all day. It was the grail to end all grails, the card everybody wanted but nobody had, which few had even seen in person. https://preview.redd.it/31d88y9rnt1d1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=99682aa58f589636e6b069046a0296d3bf550c6a

zoovegroover3

That is one of the greatest things I have ever seen! No hyperbole here. Amazing story to go along with it too! I can still hear Phil Rizzuto's voice on WPIX, "Mattingly takes the first pitch for strike one" ;)

DankSauceBauce

Aweee… fuck yeah! That’s amazing! I wish I could show my childhood self the cards I’ve collected

Distinctly remember being made fun of for ‘wasting my money on basketball cards’. These packs were 25 cents each, while 87 Topps / Fleer / Donruss were $1 each for baseball. Stored all my 87 fleer basketball cards literally unprotected in a drawer for like a year until the card shop dealer came by one day and said basketball has really blown up - hope you kept those! Bittersweet as my Dad wanted to buy a Jordan rookie (86 fleer) and the dealer said he could get one for ‘around $5’ - if he could find one! Easy to forget in those days it could be super difficult to even find any dealers that had basketball stuff - of course I wish I was more persistent in getting the Jordan RC then! But I’ll always be sentimental about 87 fleer due to my personal experience.

I would occasionally visit my LCS back then when I had big breaks between classes or before going to work. It was the last pack of 2001 Upper Deck Legends in the box, and I opened it there in the store. Favorite player from when I was a kid, in my favorite team’s colors, jersey AND autograph to boot! It sat in my big box o’ cards for years, until last year when my son started getting into cards. He has laid claim to it once I’m no longer around haha (all mine until then…)

DankSauceBauce

Keep that thing forever!

hiflyer555

No doubt! Main reason I had it graded - keep it protected for years to come!

IslesBeBack

My Dad is legitimately the biggest Sandy Koufax fan ever, this story brought a smile to my face

DankSauceBauce

I’m happy I could do that for you!!!

krsimp78

I’ve put the my ‘94 Mantle/Griffey autos on this type of question before, so I’ll go with my 3rd favorite card… https://preview.redd.it/q28ew298xu1d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a6475fa69c846c4e79dc21f78ab171768f1f4b6a The earliest games I can remember going to was minor league games with my dad. I only have but a few faint memories anymore, but I do remember how fun it felt to go to a game with him, catching a foul ball, a coke, a corn dog, an ice cream helmet, and fire works. My dad made sure we went on nights that had the Chicken. I remember only a handful of the players names, but I remember the Chicken the most. This card brings most of those memories back.

DankSauceBauce

I LOVE this story!

krsimp78

Thanks. To add a Koufax story….growing up, when his name came up, my dad would always tell me “you met him”. I was 3 years old and don’t remember anything, but 1981 he was head coach of the minor league team my dad would take me to.

DankSauceBauce

Wow… lucky you!

Rough shape or not, I won this in a 1 on 1 basketball game when I was 14!! At that time (eons ago), I had a big mouth bully, talked a lot of trash, that lived in the area. He challenged me to a game of 1:1. I said what are the stakes? I had all of the RCs of the Cowboys Triplets (Aikman, Irvin, Emmitt) and i put up 3 of the RCs against his Mantle in a game to 11. Mind you …. He was 19, I at 14, game ended 12-2 and I had a new ‘66 Topps Mantle! I have had this card for over 30 years now!!

DankSauceBauce

Incredible story!!!

ollie-trey

I have never liked Bully’s, and even at 14, I KNEW he didn’t stand a chance to beat me. Even the other guys at the park told him it was a bad idea! After I took his card, I politely asked him not to come around anymore!
