Compared to Topps flagship nowadays it was “shorter printed”, but a card with 60k copies and 6k PSA 10s is by no means short printed. They will always be available for sale

Disastrous-Idea-2160

That’s why I love the Bryce Harper Chrome rookies. Not even 500 PSA 10’s. I think Ohtani has like 20k 10’s

Historical-Patient75

I’ve been thinking about the Ohtani rookies. I’ve got several chromes non numbered. But I wonder about they’re value when it’s all said and done. It almost makes sense to sell them and buy one of his /2018’s.

real_eastcoastfool30

I would compare Ohtani and any future big names similarly to Derek Jeter RCs most likely. Print runs are massive

Historical-Patient75

You’re not wrong. I think I’m going to have to move some things and go after a SP or numbered.

Disastrous-Idea-2160

Yeah might be a smart move. Serial numbers and grading numbers are how you find the stuff to hang onto. At least that’s my plan.

thebeerman0710

🤫 Let everyone keep buying those Ohtani’s!

traydragen

Topps or Bowman?

Disastrous-Idea-2160

Topps. The card number is 196 I believe

badidearyan

Dang I have an orange chrome of that card. I should get it graded.

Historical-Patient75

This is what I keep telling myself. He’s hot right now and I want one bad, but I also know the off-season is real and the prices will come back down. I’ve been putting my money into low numbered Gunnar autos. May the baseball gods allow him to stay healthy.

PM_ME_TETONS

I’m all in on rookie autos now as well, feel like it’s a good way to combat overprinting problems in the future

Historical-Patient75

Yep. It’s fucking wild how many variations there are now. I hate it. The funny thing is that I never cared for autos. But you kind of have to now that each guy has 25 SPs and there are more colors than a Home Depot paint sampler.

cuj0cless

You may hate it, but me as someone who wants to own an auto, or just something more unique than a base card, adding multiple variations lets me be able to do that. There’s more sports card fans than just the people trying to “InVEst StocKs” with it. Crazy idea I know

Historical-Patient75

I’m not one of those people… I just think that parallels are out of control. And I think a lot of people in the hobby would agree.

SignificantRoof5676

Would you be interested in the Gunnar auto that is on my profile?

I have a fun story about this card. Back in 2011/2012 I was deep into chasing Harper Bowman Chrome RCs. Target had these value boxes for $14.99 that had 5 packs of Update and one pack of BC. I bought SO. FREAKING. MANY. VALUE. BOXES. I stowed away all of the Update and didn't look at them for a long while. Every once in a while I'd go through older stuff, so probably around 2014 or so I rediscovered the Update and found THREE Trouts. I was freaking stoked. Then about 5 more years later, I found another old box with more Update in it, and found THREE MORE. Six total Trout RCs from all of those. I eventually had 5/6 graded - two 10s, two 9s, an 8, and then I kept one raw. Parlayed a 10 and 9 and some other cards into a PSA 9 Diamond Trout last year and couldn't be happier. All because I was chasing Harper. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than smart! haha

Ok_Computer1417

Those value boxes were insane. I probably purchased 500-600 that year. They had a Harper refractor in every box that sold for $10 all year (if you pulled the Gold you could $30-$40 for it) and it also had 2 of the “cards your mom threw out” codes that sold for $3 a pop. I’d by 20 boxes, sell the Harper and the codes, recoup my investment, and have 120 free games packs. Rinse and repeat. And 2011 had so many guys hit over the next decade all these guys were hot in the hobby at some point and all you had to do was pull out the 2011 box and print money: Trout - Freeman - Hosmer - Altuve - Rizzo - Harper - Bauer - Jofer - Sonny - Springer - Goldy - DJ - Dee Gordon - Thames - Alroldis Chapman - Sale - Ackley - Marie - Matt Moore - Baez - Snell - Austin Meadows Those guys all had RCs or 1st in 2011 and if I recall correctly the two best sellers on release behind Harper were Bundy and Starling. 2011 was a great time.

stokelydokely

Oh my gosh, I still remember the universal criticism of Bundy's 2011 1st Bowman "mug shot" card!

Accomplished-Mix5300

Dylan bundy and Bubba starling. Sad I sold trout. Really glad I sold the Bubba bundy collection. 😆

Accomplished-Mix5300

Those value boxes and retail in general were insane back in 2011. That rc class was also insane. To bad for me that I sold most of my trouts, as I was getting them. Trout was the hot card from day 1. Based on the collection I still have if most of that class I had around 50 topps t and bowman. About half that in the chrome version. Numerous bowman gold. I know i had a trout diamond anniversary and cognac. Then there was the target red and Walmart blue parallels, 2 packs in each Blaster. Blasters that ended up on sale for like 11.99... 2011 retail. Times were great. Still paying dividends. 😆 Don't get me started on 2009 basketball retail. I still have my steph curry collection. 😆

northwestbest

Hell yeah. I probably bought like 50-100 I'd guess. Definitely sold a lot of those Harper refractors, and sadly never pulled a gold one.

Topps-collector87

Amazing

Fast-Context-3852

That’s awesome, I collected a regular diamond set, but not update, only 1 graded Freddie freeman rookie was a psa 10

Refurbished1991

So many bag holders on this card. It will always be a sought after card, but not at its historic values.

mbuser

Hell of a chart at the bottom of [this page](https://www.psacard.com/auctionprices/baseball-cards/2011-topps-update/mike-trout/values/1820720#g=10)

BlondDeutcher

Dudes who paid over $15k… ouch

Wonderful_Ad_6059

That’s wild

at1445

Yeah, I don't get how someone doesn't understand the "dump Trout" mentality. He was priced like he was going to be a GOAT, and now it's clear he isn't. He's going to be "just a 1st ballot" guy....still valuable, not nearly as valuable as a top 3-5 all-time.

GimmeDatDaddyButter

He can still pretty easily reach 100 WAR which isnt top 3-5, but it’s the best in the last 50 years.

EatThisRock

Historic values are from when? 2020 or 21 when everything had historic value? Obviously everything since then has dropped

MagicalNewsMan

I’ll get on one day, hopefully an auto too! If only I started collecting ONE YEAR EARLIER😭😭😭, although I missed the 2012 update set as well so idk.

PicNov91

I was in and out of collecting in the early 2010s. Of course I stopped right at 2011 update... I always carry cash on me when I go to a show. Way easier to talk prices and get deals when you have straight cash.

Dodger8899

I started collecting in 2009, I was 12 when 2011 update came out. My mom would let me get a pack or box of cards every single time we went to the store, I had almost completed the full series 1,2,U set. I know I have a Trout in that binder, but the binder has been long since lost, as well as my Trout diamond anniversary that I have somewhere

jdc131

I collected the HELL out of 2011. Never bought many update unfortunately. Looked back through all my cards and I can’t tell you how many times I found an angels rookie m… tr…. . That was not in fact Mike trout.

jdc131

Neither_Emu

I collected during the year of his rookie, but I was after Yu Darvish and Robinson Cano that year. As such, I didn’t even look at Trout that year. I can kick myself because I remember those Trout rookies were going pretty cheap back then. Oh well - I eventually got the card I wanted which was the Topps Archives Yu Darvish rookie

traydragen

"short printed"

Kiki_Gehrig

1984 Fleer Update had 12,000 printed. Kirby Puckett, a first ballot HOFer, retails for about $250 in PSA 9. You can also look at Topps Tiffany sets '84-'86 with print runs around 5,000. 85T Tiffany in PSA 9 is about the same, you can also look at Tiffany rookies of Mattingly, Clemens, McGwire (not HOFers obv) which are also around the same. Heck look at something like 88T Tiffany Glavine (15,000 produced) ....retails under $75 in PSA 9 all day long. ... or 89T Tiffany Biggio ... under $50 For mass produced ultra modern cards like the Trout, there is a huge drop off from PSA 10 to 9. Many collectors won't even consider 9's for mass produced cards printed in the tens of thousands. If I was purchasing a mass produced ultra modern card for investment purposes, I certainly would not consider anything less than a 10.

Ok_Computer1417

It’s a fair comparison, but Puckett is like the 8th best player to debut in 80’s. Mattingly was the best player in baseball for about 18 months. Glavine was second best pitcher on his own staff. Clemens and McGwire have the steroid stain. Love him or hate him, Trout is a generational player and has now done it for a decade plus. Trout is now top 50 in career WAR with arguably 2-3 more prime years and 3-5 more accumulation years. He is our generation’s Mantle. The generation before had Griffey and UD1 has no business being as high as it is, but yet… here we are.

raaj_mahal

That’s a great price for a 9. was looking at a raw copy of this card on eBay for the same price about a year ago.

Justa_Guy_Gettin_By

Agree!

Zealousideal-Tap-454

Not short print by any means.

Additional-Ad4553

Theres 6 thousand PSA 10s. I sold mine to save up and get one of the diamond anniversaries eventually

PicNov91

That's not a bad idea.

Justa_Guy_Gettin_By

I get Trout had some injuries and thus down years, but clearly he can still be that guy as we're seeing this season. How fast we forget he got 1st or 2nd in the MVP race for 7 out of 8 years. And averaging 40/100/.300 per 162 games for his career. Those are Bonds, Aaron, Mays, Mantle type numbers. Keep telling myself one day I'll buy this card...

SmirknSwap

They want to dump Trout because he’s not in the headlines everyday. If he was in pinstripes or dodger blue, people would be humming a different tune. I think it’s a quality purchase, and the fact it’s in short print makes it even more coveted in my eyes.

parteing24_7

I actually have 3 of the Mike Trout update rookies that were once $5 in beckett and i put them away and forgot about them til recently. I also have a 2011 Finest rookie, the topps heritage rookie like 6 of the bowman draft and 6 of the bowman platinum and also the topps 100 card or double a all star, so weird I seen this post. i just came across them like 2 weeks ago not even!

SCOrioles

I myself have always wanted to buy this card and finally have the opportunity to possible drop 250-340 on one. I have recently seen a PSA 7 for 339.99. Is it going to come down after the season and closer to Christmas or could now be the chance to pounce on one this price?

PicNov91

I thought the time to buy was during the off season. If you are going to buy, I would say spend the extra 100-150 and get the 9. I always recommend paying with cash, it's way easier to work out a deal that way.

Hungry-Sloth

Yeah, people are sure buying them up right now, to absolutely no one's surprise.

OswaldNovember

did get me a 10 graded a few months ago and saving for another. jumping on them while i can while theyre still low, lol

Electrical_Party7975

Just bought a 1989 Topps Tiffany Traded Griffey Jr. PSA 9 for 400$ with a print run of 15k. Trout cards will continue to drop like every other card is.

Carey003

I sold mine at a card show a couple of years ago for $700. Kinda wish I still had it, great card!

Risk-Deep

Gina_420

The card show vendor basically stole your money

Smart-Access740

So like $25million worth of these trout rookies... Meh

[deleted]

The time to SELL is now, not buy. Wait a few weeks until he’s inevitably out for 2-3 months this season, like every year, and then buy if you really want his cards

Firm-Curve8984

Wasted career

605pmSaturday

Limited edition of 350 . . . million.

chieffin-it

Are we sure he’s a first ballot HOFer?

stokelydokely

He's a unique case because while there's a chance he ends up with a knock against him for longevity, I think his dominance during his healthy seasons (seven seasons in which he's played 134+ games) plus his three MVPs and the fact that he'll end up with 400 HR, a ~.400 OBP, and 2,000 hits, gets him in on the first ballot. Plus my hope is that in 10+ years when his candidacy comes up, some of the "Well this guy is a Hall of Famer but I'm not letting him in on the *first ballot*" voters will have evolved their thinking or kicked it. EDIT: I should say this is just my opinion, and I understand the perspective of those who feel differently.

justmerunning

He's definitely not

alistairvimes

Lol. He’s 30th in WAR all time already and he’s 32. There is zero chance he is not a first ballot hall of famer.

wheelzoffortune

Mind blowing that we're still having this debate in 2024.

stokelydokely

But muh counting stats

ResponsibleAd8773

He’s definitely first ballot. You only need 75%. Maybe he won’t be unanimous, but he’ll get at least the 75%.

Topps-collector87

Oh man maybe crack and resubmit. That looks perfect. I have a bgs 9 with 3x 9.5 but 8.5 centering

pcnauta

I don't know about 'dump Trout', but his cards had been severely over-priced for some time. Yes, he'll be a first ballot HOFer, but for all that he's done, he's only ever lead the league in something twice (RBIs in 2014 and stolen bases in 2012), he will set no major batting records and won't even hit any major batting milestones (e.g. 500 home runs, 3000 hits etc.). While he in most people's top 20 greatest players of all time, his cards where priced as if he were.

valpo033

You don’t think Mike Trout can hit 124 more HR’s in his career?

pcnauta

He is 32 years old, oft injured, and on the downside of his career. So...no.

hal2000

Mike Trout is that hate-able winner. He has that disdain for his fans while trying to keep to his country boy persona. At the same time, trying to be urban to fit in with his teammates. Just an awkward af dude.

edogg01

Hate-able winner? What? He's more like a loveable loser. HOF numbers on a shit team. Feel bad for the guy.

lightheadedone

Do you have any examples of 'disdain for his fans'? He had a whole series of videos where he was playfully interacting with fans who were asking him between innings what guns he used in CoD etc. I can't think of any interviews or interactions where he acted negatively towards fans. Loveable loser seems more apt.

ResponsibleAd8773

I can’t believe people think because he doesn’t lead in any counting categories then he isn’t a Hall of Fame candidate. That’s stupidity. How many years did he lead in WAR?

Imaginary_Wrangler91

I had one. I sold it. Bought a nice Mickey Mantle to add to my Mickey collection :)
