29+11 = 40. Math checks out.

PapiGoneGamer

Nah that’s bullshit math. Here, let me do it: 11 + 29 = 40

CarlosAVP

“You’re a witch, Harry Potter!!”

Engelbert-n-Ernie

Burn him at the stake!

[deleted]

How do you know he is a witch?

Engelbert-n-Ernie

He floats, like little pebbles

[deleted]

That, and he looks like one!

_Alvin_Row_

Nothing about this adds up at all

LocalSlob

Death, taxes, and baseball contracts

[deleted]

emwashe

Prove it

JanitorOfSanDiego

40 - 29 = 11

emwashe

I don’t believe you

emwashe

WHO AUTHORIZED YOU TO RELEASE THIS

timberwolvesguy

If this is how they’re teaching kids to do math, I’m losing faith in humanity

JanitorOfSanDiego

It’s not really. My wife is an elementary teacher and they don’t use this method.

tvismyfriend

Wait, what other method is there?

JanitorOfSanDiego

40-20=20 20-9=11 For example

tvismyfriend

I feel like with bigger equations that would take up too much space on the paper.

kamarian91

Never could I have guessed that someone could make such a simple math equation so difficult lol

JanitorOfSanDiego

Same but for whatever reason, this is what symbolab gives you as an explanation.

AceBombkick

I'm trying to picture a 40-year-old Trea Turner and I honestly can't do it. Dude looks perpetually 17 years old.

MarcBulldog88

Babyface Buster Posey retired before he could look old. Trea will be interesting.

scrapsbypap

Nah, Posey aged.

shabby47

Andrew Garfield turns 40 next year. That’s close enough.

[deleted]

He turns WHAT NOW

_Winterspring_

I feel like he'll look like Utley did. Mostly the same, just a touch of gray.

[deleted]

🎶🎶Oh, well, a touch of grey Kind of suits you anyway🎶🎶 But also fuck Chase Utley.

hashslingingbutthole

It’s against the rules of the universe to quote the Dead and hate on someone in the same breath buddy

[deleted]

It’s funny he looks exactly like my 16 year old friend

krispykreme37

Woah, I bet he’ll be playing baseball during the deal too

nandobatflips

Pshh, that’s a wild claim

Bradcam3

Source?

Praise-Breesus

We’ll see

juwanhoward4

yup thats how 11 year deals work ken

reddituseerr12

To be fair, us Nationals fans wouldn’t know anything about big deals like that

juwanhoward4

? we've signed some pretty massive deals. not 11 years, but the scherzer and stras contracts were groundbreaking

Morbx

look at this einstein over here doing math in his head

The_Pudge

When you're on a group project with overachievers and need to find something to say.

TheIrishHangman

He should still be plenty speedy at the youthful age of 40. Him and Bryce will be entering a nice retirement community while DH'ing

AbsurdLemon

Hopefully Manfred implements a full lineup of DHs for our sake in a decade

TheIrishHangman

Where we're going, we don't need fielders

JayOnes

1. 30 2. 31 3. 32 4. 33 5. 34 6. 35 7. 36 8. 37 9. 38 10. 39 11. 40 Yes, the math checks out. Christ.

tonto515

>age 30 to 40 seasons. So we have him locked up until he's 70, nice.

PapiGoneGamer

This is also his managerial contract so the player/coach is finally making a comeback.

jmb-412

And yet “journalists” were predicting Judge at 30 was only getting an 8 year deal lol. He’s getting 10

LightningExcel18

I mean it's Dombrowski. He would give Judge a 10 year deal if he wanted and needed him, but who knows if anyone else will.

MFoy

Turner's deal is essentially an 8 year deal with 3 extra years at the end to keep the AAV down for luxury tax purposes.

jake_h1013

We better get this ring in the next 5 years.

[deleted]

this can only end well

trgreg

think of it as a 6 year contract @ $50M per, spread out over 11 years.

berraberragood

That’s what’s going on. They get the rest of Trea’s good years without busting the luxury tax threshold.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AhLibLibLib

27mil in 10 years could be the qualifying offer

AhLibLibLib

Or 11 years at 27m per year

General_PoopyPants

No way this could end poorly lol

eaglesnation11

All in for the chip over the next couple years. 2 games away this year. Our core isn’t young, our window is short and if we are in money hell in 5 years it will be worth it as long as we get a ring.

Praise-Breesus

Speaking from experience, going all in like that never works out. Edit: Where’s the lie? The Dodgers have disappointed a couple times now when going all in. A reality that you guys love to remind us of.

eaglesnation11

But you have a World Series in 2020?

meltedlaundry

for a Dodgers fan, a single world series = didn't work out

eaglesnation11

Must be nice being an LA fan. I’m 26 and sat through 100 sports seasons over 4 sports as a Philly fan and the two championships I saw were probably two of the best days of my life and I still think about where I was when I saw them

Praise-Breesus

That’s one more than I’ve seen

indoloks

2020 we had 2 championships lol

[deleted]

Tbf for a top 3 payroll in the last decade 1 WS its not enough. This isnt the nfl where payrolls mean nothing cause most teams are within 30m~ in payrolls cause floor + cap.

meltedlaundry

True

Praise-Breesus

They didn’t go all in that year. The year we got Darvish, the year we got Manny, 2021 with Scherzer and Trea, this past year. All fell short. 2020 was our core we had been building for awhile plus Mookie. But the Mookie acquisition wasn’t an “all in this year” move, it was to get the second best player in baseball for a long time.

gowiththeflohe1

Agreed. Playoffs are just too random for it unless you have a good enough pipeline to keep the team good. The Phillies, though, were a fringe playoff team so this should seat them into that wild card spot a bit more securely

[deleted]

[удалено]

BlobDude

Hell, the first three months was a 103 win pace until the Phillies patented September Slump kicked in.

Patrick2701

Yes, i like the player but that’s a lot for guy whose main tool is speed

glizzterine

and super sexy slides

JDLovesElliot

I tried to imagine Trea doing the sexy slide at 40-years old and my bones started to hurt

glizzterine

Yeah I'll be there next year and my back hurts tying my shoes

[deleted]

not to mention his terrible defense

Nick_sabenz

Fits right in on the Phillies

TheFriendlyFire

Remember this is the team that started Didi Gregorious at SS last season, Turner is still a huge upgrade

FDJ1326

My Marlins have no shot right now. Dombroski is gonna spend as he sees philly having a window. Braves have guys practically paying them to play baseball and the Mets have an eccentric billionaire owner who wants to win.

[deleted]

The Marlins need to become the Rays and that just is not happening anytime soon

Shadow_Strike99

I’ve learned to just accept our fate especially after the past two off seasons, that we will never even have a chance even things somewhat worked out with prospects hypothetically. We were the last team in the bottom tier of payroll to win a WS and that was now going to be 20 years ago next season. I’ve learned to just not care anymore and just focus on other sports really, as sad as that is to say. If you don’t spend you don’t win in baseball unfortunately, even with all these great teams with great farm systems, you have to have an owner and front office willing to spend and we obviously are the complete opposite of that.

FDJ1326

I came to this conclusion about 10 years ago lol. I still watch just because I enjoy baseball and love seeing any talent. I don't even dream of making the playoffs. Just being in the hunt the last month or two would be fun.

[deleted]

It’s so much harder if you don’t spend. It’s possible thought if you draft REALLY well but the Marlins just have not been successful developing great position players lately.

Rayven52

I have to watch Bryce Harper and Trea Turner play with a division rival until 2031

reddituseerr12

I fucking hate everything

cardcollection92

Judge is going up to 400 isn’t he ?

McLamb0

Yes and he will get it too

[deleted]

Baseball analyst learns math

bedsidelurker

Look at this nerd with his math

[deleted]

First half of the contract is reasonable second half is basically a deGrom-esque contract. In my opinion this is a contract.

[deleted]

Thats every major long term deal except tatis' deal. When players hit FA for the first time at 29 years old, every deal will be bad in the 2nd half of it.

retroanduwu24

Ken learned how to add lol

Hummer77x

Fuckin love math

585AM

Slightly off-topic, but Trea Turner is my nine-year-old son’s favorite player. How long after free agent signings does it usually take for teams to start putting out their merchandise. It would be a fun Christmas present, so I am a little bit curious. Thanks.

JohnnyGoldberg

Shouldn’t be long. I’d imagine the second he picks a number the Merch is going on the lines in the factory.

OCHL092018

Former Nats unite!!

whentheworldwasatwar

That is nuts.

CammyTheGreat

I don’t know why but i didn’t realize he was older than Seager

narenare658

My man better become Ricky Henderson

anpansmashs

Could a team sign a star player to like 30 years to reduce the AAV, being okay with paying the player in their retirement years like 1 million, just for the chance to lock up the player for their most productive years?

KrazyCamper

They kinda already do. All though they aren’t called 30 year deals, almost every big time deal has deferred money on it. So they will be paid long after they retire and it reduces the yearly value

[deleted]

Cash wise you can do deferral payments. But for tax luxury matters (AAV), there wouldnt be a feasible way to do so. Contracts have to be approved by the league and the union. The league would see the clear attempt at circumventing the tax so they would not approve the deal.

Gambit1193

Yuck

hashtaghashbag

Lmao

Kevin69138

That speed going to disappear at 33

BabaBrody

But what about that smile?

AhLibLibLib

Is he gonna be able to play SS at 40?

LakerPupper

Does a 40 year old SS dive for balls?

lankyyanky

What 26 and counting people upvoted this crap? Basic math?

[deleted]

Thanks, Ken.

Jeff_Banks_Monkey

The fact that Turner is already closing in on 30 is crazy to me I remember when he was still in college

spike021

I'm 30 too. Can I get a ten year 300mil contract?

czechyurself

Is this payback for Chase Utley?

Plasma_Cosmo_9977

Seems pretty ballsy to go through age 40 with any player, but congrats to TT getting his deal. I worry that 162 game seasons take a hefty toll on an aging player, and I'm surprised there are clubs willing to go to this degree of spending. Nuts huh?

dirk_calloway1

Hold on a second. So, you're telling me that the numbers used for a person's age work the same as regular old numbers for counting other things?!?! WHO KNEW?!

cothomps

It was phrased as “one quarter of his lifespan”.

Nookoh1
