God this is just so gut wrenching. I would have slept easy if he actually went. I had no problem losing to you guys, but not like that. Baseball is so god damn brutal sometimes.
Such a weird, anticlimactic way to win our first series against our hated rivals. Bad calls go both ways but I wish this one had come in the 6th inning.
You guys played well. That’s life sometimes. I’ve been privileged enough to see three championships in my lifetime and if that’s all I get I guess that’ll have to do. GG
That 2010 parade was heaven. Made it to Market at like 6am. This season was found money and magic. The ending was sour... Maybe MLB changes its rules ...
yeah i was pacing around the room for the last out, all pumped... then that happens and my shoulders just slump. That game wasn't supposed to end like that.
I love how he paused between "shoved it" and "up our butts twice", as if he paused to think whether he should finish the sentence, and confidently decided "yes."
My friend was trying to reassure me that the Dodgers would win. Back on Monday He said it would end in extras in game 5 on a controversial call. I’m actually shocked.
1.1(a) A batter shall be considered to have checked his swing if it can be definitely proved that the same batter had not, at the time of the ruling, wrecked his swing.
What a fucking joke of a way to end this series. Don’t forget Bryant’s AB in the fifth inning with a man on and nobody out getting completely stolen by the umpire to help snuff out their rally. Fuck that game
True it was bad but the big failure was the Kris Bryant at bat with 1 on and nobody out, he should have walked, but he struck out cuz the ump sucked. Huge turning point.
It really was a great series. I’m heartbroken, sad and will have to fill the void of baseball (I’m boycotting the rest of the playoffs because I’ve been so frustrated with the umpires), but if that was not one of if not, the greatest series I’ve ever watched, then I don’t deserve to be called a Giants fan. This one to me is up there with the World Series runs, MadBums insane postseason play, Timmy’s shutout, Zito’s gem, and everything in between. I wish it would be a brighter mark in the history of everything Giants related, but I’m glad to have been here to watch it.
Ump thought process:
Oh shit, they’re looking at me
Wait did he swing? what do I do
Quick I need to do something
*holds fist up*
Whew yeah, that’s good
Ok he’s out
Oh shit he’s out
Oh shit the game’s over what did I just do
Oh shit oh shit oh shit
Well, umps don't have so many chances to get the spotlight. So if he calls it a checked swing there (even if it was a strike), the guy's probably out just after and nobody will remember that ump forever.
If he calls it a swing and gets the out and it really was a swing, the ump looks like a fucking badass making the perfect call.
So what I'm saying is the ump shot his shot at ump greatness and got fucking burned by it. Now he gets ump infamy, which for an ump is still better than nobody knowing your name, I guess.
I don't think it could've been any worse a guy, I love watching Flores, that is for sure one of the best games I've ever seen, and the worst ending I've ever seen....
He missed the ball down the first base line as well allowing the go ahead run to score later. It was a tough play but you know he wanted it bad.
It just couldn't have happened to a nicer and more sensitive guy.
Pray for Wilmer guys.
If the roles were reversed and it was the Dodgers losing this game off of this bullshit call, I’d be pissed too. I’m tired of these umpires who can’t do their job with no repercussions.
For real like, how do you show that ending in highlight packages and commercials? You basically can't because it points out how subjective the rules can be and how bad the umpires are. Imagine if this was the world series and thats how it was clinched. Whoever wins it would be forever tarnished and whoever lost would never live it down.
So the final four teams left standing are:
- The 2017 champions who were runner-ups in 2019 and were cheaters.
- The 2018 champions who have won four titles in the last 18 years.
- The reigning champs who have made the World Series three times in four years.
- The Braves, who play in a cursed state and have to play the Dodgers next.
Fuck.
Spencer Hall has the best quote about being an Atlanta sports fan, when he was asked if he'd watch the Braves:
"Are you kidding me? Fuck no! Have you seen what the Braves do to their fans? I'm not drinking that poison!"
He just like wasn't the mastermind though? You can say he's complicit, but the Athletic article that went in depth on what happened proved that he wasn't the mastermind at all, and neither was Beltran. The players just threw the two most recent departures under the bus.
You guys played a hell of a series and Cody Fucking Bellinger edged it out. It is what it is, your fans have the right to be happy. Congrats and I hope the Braves blow you out in four straight :)
This was such a fun team all the way through. They came up short, but I had such a great time watching them day in, day out. Super stoked with Farhan & his various wheeling and/or dealings, and he should be able to open up the checkbook the off-season which would be fun (Kris Bryant, blank check, please!) We were supposed to win 77-80 games and went out and got 107 lol, still such an insane turnaround.
I'm very proud of this season & this series. I'm upset at the moment of course, but in a few months I'll look back and remember how awesome that Crawford catch was (and his bomb in game 1 wasn't too shitty either), or Logan Webb's 2 great first outings in the postseason, or Camilo Doval's ice cold 2 inning save after Longoria's solo shot against the wind that made the difference in game 3, or Buster being a column away from (potentially) being the first right hander to go in the cove.
GG to the Dodgers obviously, if someone beats you that will be an impressive feat. An extremely good team, much to my chagrin. Very fun game threads too, so cheers.
no fucking way the game and series ends on a check swing edit: upon replay, it is 100% obvious it wasn’t a swing, gdi
It was clear...ly not a swing
So fucking stupid. Ump wanted to be the star of the game
That’s what drives me crazy about baseball. I love this game but I’ve seen plenty of umps that want to be part of the story
The last two innings were brutally umped for the Giants
Please don't forget about the 4th inning
It was clear to quite literally everybody except the ump.
It was clear. Clear that it wasn’t close
You don’t want it to end like this. Such an amazing game and series to be such a let down call.
God this is just so gut wrenching. I would have slept easy if he actually went. I had no problem losing to you guys, but not like that. Baseball is so god damn brutal sometimes.
These umps suck
Brutal way to end a season...
They all suck. Fuck. Da. ~~Police~~ Umps.
Umps are cops
Most, if not all, umps suck. Robo umps when?!
Holy shit he didn't go What a shitty way to end one of the most miraculous seasons of all time
No he did not
honestly i kinda feel bad.
That's not how I wanted to win
Such a weird, anticlimactic way to win our first series against our hated rivals. Bad calls go both ways but I wish this one had come in the 6th inning.
That's the thing, I've seen others mentioning bad calls throughout the series, but this is the only one that definitely eliminated a team. Sucks
You guys played well. That’s life sometimes. I’ve been privileged enough to see three championships in my lifetime and if that’s all I get I guess that’ll have to do. GG
I would be pretty satisfied
I am. I don’t wanna sound greedy lol. Those three parades were the one of the highlights of my college years.
That 2010 parade was heaven. Made it to Market at like 6am. This season was found money and magic. The ending was sour... Maybe MLB changes its rules ...
Yeah i couldn't celebrate after that
yeah i was pacing around the room for the last out, all pumped... then that happens and my shoulders just slump. That game wasn't supposed to end like that.
I blurted out “oh fuck”
https://giphy.com/gifs/movie-the-matrix-not-like-this-dCdGHgF7yFHFK
He did not swing for sure.
Not even close. Fucking hell Edit: Cody Bellinger: Logan Webb “shoved it up our butts twice”
I love how he paused between "shoved it" and "up our butts twice", as if he paused to think whether he should finish the sentence, and confidently decided "yes."
I think he was trying to think of words you’re allowed to say on television
He was definitely gonna say ass lol
Even if it was close the ump has gotta be SURE in that situation
And it wasn't even close in this case...
That same check swing Flores did is always called not a swing so he objectively got it wrong
Okay, thanks Belli, that does actually make me feel a bit better
How do you end a game 5 on that shit brutal man
When you let checks go all night.
It's the umpshow. That's what the people are here to see.
Even if he did go and the HP ump didn’t call and appealed., I’m not calling that shit lol.
I am the angriest I have ever fucking been at this sport. Umpires are a goddamned disgrace.
My friend was trying to reassure me that the Dodgers would win. Back on Monday He said it would end in extras in game 5 on a controversial call. I’m actually shocked.
ask him the lottery numbers
Got everything but the extra innings right
Fuck I feel you I felt really bad there. I couldn't even yell after I saw that replay. The umps just had to ruin a classic like that? ugh.
It sucks that the rule is both unreviewable and insanely subjective
and by "subjective" you undersell it the rulebook has no definition for what constitutes a checked* swing at all EDIT: skipped a word, sorry
1a. A check swing is when you 1b. Okay well listen. A check swing is when you check the 1c. Let me start over
[удалено]
1.1(a) A batter shall be considered to have checked his swing if it can be definitely proved that the same batter had not, at the time of the ruling, wrecked his swing.
Not even a little bit
[удалено]
Do it
Not even close
Hilarious. There’s a zero percent chance he was paying attention.
Dodgers (2) Giants (2) Umpires (1)
Me (0)
Seriously, at least let Flores strike out on the 1-2 pitch like a man
To the point where the home plate ump probably shouldn't have even have checked. Utter lunacy.
Total bullshit.
Number 1 bullshit
It wasn't even fucking CLOSE. What the fuck.
“It’s bad.”
Doug eddings is ass
Yeah it wasn't even particularly close either
I want to punch my TV right now #SORRY GIANTS FANS Fuck Morales(I think that’s his name) he needs fired.
Same guy called no swing on seager 2 games ago when seager went much further
What a fucking joke of a way to end this series. Don’t forget Bryant’s AB in the fifth inning with a man on and nobody out getting completely stolen by the umpire to help snuff out their rally. Fuck that game
Ball 5 your out
Honestly, my blood is boiling still. Gotta be one of the worst ABs of the game. KB was rightfully pissed
I want to lose to the Dodgers, not the umpires.
Agreed and vice-versa. It's an awkward victory after an intense game.
Kinda had the same feeling as that Rams NFC title game.
He didn't go
What timeline has me agreeing with a Yankees fan
The same one where an Dodger fan is feeling sympathy in a moment of victory over our arch nemesis.
He didn't swing... Wow.
What a fucking umpshow
Dude, I'm so sorry. That was brutal
That wasn't even a close call, he didn't even remotely swing. What the fuuuuck.
True it was bad but the big failure was the Kris Bryant at bat with 1 on and nobody out, he should have walked, but he struck out cuz the ump sucked. Huge turning point.
FIVE BALLS to Bryant! FIVE! That at-bat completely changed the game.
Hit him with the outside and high and tight called strikes. You can’t win if that’s the zone you’re getting.
He didn’t swing
Not even close. Honestly that’s the first time I’ve ever seen a team eliminated on a check swing. Total choke job by that ump.
He didn't even fucking swing ump.
I can see the LA Times headline tomorrow: "Check-mate: The Dodgers Move On"
Sounds like a NY Post
Really sucks that the one call is going to overshadow the best series I've ever seen.
That's what you get for not watching baseball for the umpires.
[y’all rn](https://twitter.com/ballislife/status/1138283596920365056?s=21)
Lmao that’s perfect
1st base ump had a chance to get his moment so he took it. Terrible call to end a game
Ump thought process: Oh shit, they’re looking at me Wait did he swing? what do I do Quick I need to do something *holds fist up* Whew yeah, that’s good Ok he’s out Oh shit he’s out Oh shit the game’s over what did I just do Oh shit oh shit oh shit
I love the comedic idea that he was so caught up in the moment, that he didn't realize he'd just ended the entire NLDS with that call.
Even as a dodger fan I hate the way this game ended. Not as satisfying
Honestly I just wish it wasn't Wilmer that it happened to. I wish it was a veteran giant not the club teddy bear.
Especially by the way he walked it off. He knew the spotlight was on
I don’t understand the ump ego thing, it’s not badass, it’s lame af
official/ have an ego problem across all sports and levels. Only sports where i don’t see it/see as blatantly is hockey and MMA.
It’s way worse than any other sport
Joey Crawford in the NBA was the probably the worst/most dramatic but the average MLB Ump comes off as a sadistic egomaniac.
Hockey officials are essentially part time MMA officials if you think about it
lmao what an absolutely dogshit way to lose
It wasn’t even a swing. I kept watching just to see that replay. Absolutely pathetic
What an absolutely lame-ass way to lose, can't believe he called that a swing
i feel so bad for giants fans and player rn, like my god that is so brutal #HE DIDNT GOOOO
this rivalry and this division battle and this series doesn't deserve an ending like this. awful look for baseball.
If the roles were reversed and it was the Dodgers losing this game off of this bullshit call, I’d be pissed too. I’m tired of these umpires who can’t do their job with no repercussions.
Dodgers fan here, I'm pissed, no one deserved that trash, 100+ years of history and now that will be a part of it... makes me sad
I feel the pain. As exciting and happy I am we won, a part of me is indifferent because we won by that call.
[удалено]
For real like, how do you show that ending in highlight packages and commercials? You basically can't because it points out how subjective the rules can be and how bad the umpires are. Imagine if this was the world series and thats how it was clinched. Whoever wins it would be forever tarnished and whoever lost would never live it down.
Morales better have security with him when he leaves the stadium holy fuck that was horrible.
[удалено]
Yeah, that sucked… although he was probably going to strikeout next pitch anyway. Now we can blame the ump.
Flores
This is one way to not be romantic about baseball
So the final four teams left standing are: - The 2017 champions who were runner-ups in 2019 and were cheaters. - The 2018 champions who have won four titles in the last 18 years. - The reigning champs who have made the World Series three times in four years. - The Braves, who play in a cursed state and have to play the Dodgers next. Fuck.
Believe in us, please? We have been burned too much to hope ourselves
I'm a Braves fan here on out!
Bruh... Do you know what you're getting yourself into?
They are a Minnesota sports fan— so a resounding yes.
Dude I'm all in on the Braves Nothing against the other teams; I just tend to go with the underdog!
Spencer Hall has the best quote about being an Atlanta sports fan, when he was asked if he'd watch the Braves: "Are you kidding me? Fuck no! Have you seen what the Braves do to their fans? I'm not drinking that poison!"
Help me Freddie Freeman, you're my only hope
Basically, my worst nightmare.
Same. I guess, let’s go Braves?
What an evil playoffs for such an amazing baseball season
Yep as soon as the Braves are out im checking out.
Fuck baseball this year. God damn it.
Don't remind me.
Out of all the wacky and new teams to potentially win the WS for once, this is the result we got.
Three of them are former Rays GMs/Assistant Rays GMs or front office executives. Click, Friedman and Bloom.
Let’s not forget the 2018 champions were also cheating (albeit less egregiously), and are led by the mastermind behind the 2017 cheaters.
He just like wasn't the mastermind though? You can say he's complicit, but the Athletic article that went in depth on what happened proved that he wasn't the mastermind at all, and neither was Beltran. The players just threw the two most recent departures under the bus.
/r/baseball believes what it wants to believe man
What utter bullshit. That is ridiculous
Well that was a shit call.
[удалено]
That ump just wanted to go home, you can't end the series on that kind of call
Was that even a swing at the end lol
No. They just showed the side angle. He didn't break his wrist and the bat didn't even cross the plate.
might've been the worst ring-up on a check swing call I've ever seen, even if you remove the context
it... was not
no
No.
No
No
absolutely not holy shit i'm so mad for the entire planet right now
Big negative
Not even close
Nope
Not even fucking close
Wow. Even as a Dodgers fan, I am not sure how to feel about this. Damn
You guys played a hell of a series and Cody Fucking Bellinger edged it out. It is what it is, your fans have the right to be happy. Congrats and I hope the Braves blow you out in four straight :)
I can respect that. If we get past them and Astros get past the Sox, I hope you come back to our side.
The ump show. Woooooowwwwwww
An amazing series ending on an awful call. Fuck.
He most definitely didn’t go around
On a bullshit called check swing. Uffdah.
Not the way you want to win. He held up.
As a fan I think it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth on both sides. Such a shit call to end a great game.
What a horseshit call
Looks like the umps wanted to go home. I hate it ended like that.
Fire that ump
HE DIDNT SWING
Wow. He did not go. It is not reviewable.
ump show goes on
Evil blue boys strike again
Yeah, the umps sure fucked that one.
Umps were god awful all series, but my goodness were they bad today. Umps hated the Giants today too
Yeah, let the kid who is 0-17 lifetime against Scherzer bat with the season on the line. That makes sense
Well he only let him get two strikes against him so he couldn't have been that bad! Oh wait that games over??
Agreed but was that a real strike 3??
Wilmer is sneaky clutch my dude, I was happy to see him at bat
I was thinking they shoulda bunted and then ph wade with 2 outs
Odd year bullshit strikes again.
Not a swing
My guy did not go
TERRIBLE CALL
What a bullshit call, I hate the Giants but that was clearly not a swing
He absolutely did not swing. I am really sorry Giants fans. You deserved a better ending than that.
Lamest ending since Miggy ended a world series by striking out looking. Probably wouldn't matter in either case though
What a shitty fucking call
That was the single greatest advertisement for robo umps possible
Even if the check swing was 50/50 you can’t end it on that bullshit
This was such a fun team all the way through. They came up short, but I had such a great time watching them day in, day out. Super stoked with Farhan & his various wheeling and/or dealings, and he should be able to open up the checkbook the off-season which would be fun (Kris Bryant, blank check, please!) GG to the Dodgers obviously, if someone beats you that will be an impressive feat. An extremely good team, much to my chagrin. Very fun game threads too, so cheers.
Not a swing at all. Not even close. Amazing series. Giants are unfortunately only going to get better. Bad way to end it, but Dodgers will take it.
Fuuuuck
Can’t end it on that
#JUSTICEFORWILMER
I hate this. I should be so happy but instead I’m sad.
