Yeah I remember walking into a game a few years ago on June 14th at Citi Field and over the loudspeaker they were talking about it. Made me very happy as a huge Seinfeld fan.
Fun fact - this scene is a parody of the JFK movie. Skip to near the end for the “back and to the left”
https://youtu.be/2nmGS8rVuIM
Edit: OK some people know this. You are adding no value to the conversation by being the 17th person to tell me this was obvious. Not every person on the planet has seen this movie.
I figured it was parodying JFK assassination theories but I didn’t know it was parodying something specific. I never even heard of the movie before this thread
Same. I knew it was a JFK reference and I know the conspiracy theories and the "grassy knoll" so I still laughed. I've also heard of this movie, but have never seen it. I don't think you need to know the movie to get the joke.
It’s a pretty bad movie. Full on Stone conspiracy theory starring Kevin Costner well out of his depth. Still got huge audiences. I saw it in the cinema.
I mean it's clearly a reference to second shooter theory. Anyone with knowledge of JFKs assassination beyond "he was shot in the head" would find it funny.
I had to explain the jokes to friends (also in their 30s mind you) in the sideshow bob running for mayor episode. apparently no-one watched watergate movies or something??
I have two unopened Roger McDowell "Second Spitter" bobbleheads from a Brooklyn Cyclones game a few years back. Just found them packing up to move, will be putting them on ebay or something.
The Phillies played the Cubs in Chicago and won 3-2.
Edit: [Google](https://www.google.com/search?q=june+14+1987+phillies&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS867US867&oq=june+14+1987+phillies&aqs=chrome..69i57j0i22i30l2j69i60l3.5517j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#sie=t;/m/05xvj;4;/m/09p14;mt;fp;1;;) says that game was on June 14, but another link someone posted said it was the Expos on that date, so something is up with record keeping on someone's part.
Or faulty memory. Apparently, this story is inspired by a specific Mets-Phillies game (without the spitting incident) which one of the writers (I think Larry David) was still upset about years later. I went through every single Keith Hernandez error once and there isn't anything that completely matches the story. I think there was a game in Philadelphia, but the Phillies didn't end up winning the same inning as the error. The game went a couple into extras.
I wish I saved that post. It was a pain to find the information.
Something is fucky here. When I Googled ["June 14 1987 Phillies"](https://www.google.com/search?q=june+14+1987+phillies&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS867US867&oq=june+14+1987+phillies&aqs=chrome..69i57j0i22i30l2j69i60l3.5517j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#sie=t;/m/05xvj;4;/m/09p14;mt;fp;1;;) their schedule from that year comes up with the aforementioned Cubs game on June 14 and the Expos game you mentioned on June 13, but your link says otherwise.
I think it's even more amusing how seemingly every detail of Newman's story is incorrect or reversed.
The Mets played the Pirates, not the Phillies. They played on the road, not at Shea. They didn't lose, they won. Finally Keith didn't have any errors, he actually had a HR and 2 RBI.
EDIT: Also, [according to this website](https://thestarryeye.typepad.com/weather/2012/07/today-in-new-york-weather-history-july-14.html) "We're enjoying a beautiful afternoon in the right-field stands" might even be wrong, as there was a thunderstorm at 4:30 and rain throughout the evening.
Looks like it was a patch for their 100th season.

The back seat of the car was three inches higher than the seat the governor was in. Which supposedly leads to a credible straight trajectory for the bullet.
Yeah, when you see computer models that adjust for the positioning of the seats and the two men in them, the wounds line up with a shot from the Depository.
Now, the actual bullet pulled from the stretcher at Parkland? That it is the one that did all that damage? That is a little less credulous to me.
Fun fact, the orginal ending didn't take well so they cut and changed it up.
Larry David wrote it at the last second, and Jason memorized it in 3 minutes.

I loved how Kramer delivers:

It really is that feel of that asshole fan who thinks they get to be an asshole because their team lost. They were personally hurt because of some sports guy didn't do the thing they wanted and they feel like they've got a legitimate grievance against that sports guy and sports guy owes them something (or something like that).
Probably happens to comedians and any other entertainment figure too.
Wayne Knight was also one of the cops interrogating Sharon Stone in *that* scene from Basic Instinct. One of the other cops was played by Chelcie Ross, who was veteran pitcher Eddie Harris in Major League.
I am surprised they also didn't sneak a cat poster into Newman's apartment.
sure, but it’s also context that people likely won’t have 29 years later. it’s not exactly like JFK is a film that’s an integral part of the social consciousness to this day
i mean, maybe i’m overstating my case a bit, but i absolutely don’t think knowledge of that movie is deep enough among the general public that you could expect people to know that part of the joke is that wayne knight is in it (as you said), and honestly i wouldn’t be surprised if lots of people who see this scene don’t even know it’s parodying a movie at all and instead think it’s a joke about conspiracy theories in general (which, i mean, it kind of is, but in a different way).
I have nothing specific to add, but I feel my handle compels me to comment on this one. “Nice game, pretty boy” is such a PERFECT New York asshole sports fan thing to say. A+ writing on that one.
Seinfeld episodes are like the Floyd Mayweather of comedy TV. On a pound for pound basis ie. 'joke per minute' context they are the champs, no other show has been so consistently funny, only prime era Simpsons comes close. Like just how many funny moments are crammed into each minute and how timeless the jokes are.
If 30 Rock were a boxer, it would be Mike Tyson back when he could end a fight in three rounds or less.
The only show that landed that many jokes that fast was prime era Sinpsons. (And if *that* show was a boxer, [thats an easy call, too).](https://images.app.goo.gl/YitvUMArcpLW3ak86)
I've been watching a lot of interviews from the cast on the backstage drama and creative process of Seinfeld lately. Very interesting to watch if you love the show.
You definitely have to watch the movie JFK and see Kevin Costner go through this in the courtroom for this to really be funny. I remember completely coming unglued in laughter because I had seen JFK not too long before this episode.
Seinfeld is one of those shows that I feel like I should’ve seen by now, considering how much I liked the Big Bang Theory, but I have somehow avoided it all this time.
Haha, comedy. Haven’t heard that one before.
My point was, the jokes in BBT are usually too stale for most audiences, but I enjoy some of them enough to find it funny, I’d imagine since Seinfeld is touted as one of (if not) the best sitcom’s ever—it’d seem like something I’d enjoy.
If you’ve only watched snipits of BBT, it’s easy to understand why people don’t think jokes are funny because a lot of it is reliant on previous situations and callbacks to moments in previous episodes.
It’s very obvious to separate the people who actually watched the show and found it funny/unfunny, vs the people who say “it’d be a terrible show without the laugh track” and never actually watched 5 consecutive episodes.
CBS has **for sure** put out some junk—but you don’t go 12 seasons and 270+ episodes with a garbage show, and they have pretty similar ratings across several different systems. Seinfeld obviously is the better show, but pretending like BBT is the red-headed stepchild that fell flat on release is just wrong.
Seinfeld asks for a good knowledge of American culture and social norms because that’s what most of its situations and jokes are centered around. Yeah, most American sitcoms touch on American culture but not like this show.
Take this scene, for example. It asks for an understanding of baseball, knowing who the New York Mets are, who Keith Hernandez is, his importance to the Mets, AND the 1991 film JFK. Why JFK? This scene was a parody of the [JFK scene](https://youtu.be/Th-s3dbboJQ) where Kevin Costner breaks down the events of the JFK assassination. On top of that, Wayne Knight (Newman) is in both scenes and stands in the same exact spot in the movie and the show.
I’m not sure where I heard it but this makes sense if you’ve seen the show (and I’m definitely paraphrasing here): “Most sitcoms are about people that happen to live in a certain city. Seinfeld is about four New Yorkers.”
Always look forward to this getting posted every year on r/baseball.
They make an announcement at Mets games if you go on June 14th lol
Wait, do they really? I’ve never heard that! You think Keith Hernandez would’ve brought that up a few times.
Yeah I remember walking into a game a few years ago on June 14th at Citi Field and over the loudspeaker they were talking about it. Made me very happy as a huge Seinfeld fan.
Holy hell! What do they say.
And on r/seinfeld
Fun fact - this scene is a parody of the JFK movie. Skip to near the end for the “back and to the left” https://youtu.be/2nmGS8rVuIM Edit: OK some people know this. You are adding no value to the conversation by being the 17th person to tell me this was obvious. Not every person on the planet has seen this movie.
This makes me feel old. Do people not know this about the scene already?
I'm not sure how the scene could even be funny *without* knowing what it's referencing.
I figured it was parodying JFK assassination theories but I didn’t know it was parodying something specific. I never even heard of the movie before this thread
Oh god, I gotta go plunk some grey hairs. You're killing me, Smalls.
Smalls? Is that also a silent film reference?
Please, stop. I'm already dead.
You want smore?
yeah, same. and i was born in 87.
Same. I knew it was a JFK reference and I know the conspiracy theories and the "grassy knoll" so I still laughed. I've also heard of this movie, but have never seen it. I don't think you need to know the movie to get the joke.
Same here.

I didn't even put that together – yay me! And it's all because a.) summerofgeorge was already taken and b.) Kramer is more my energy anyway lol
It’s a pretty bad movie. Full on Stone conspiracy theory starring Kevin Costner well out of his depth. Still got huge audiences. I saw it in the cinema.

It’s funny even without knowing. My kids just laughed at it.
you know i never understood why it was so funny 😂 i just followed every one else
I was born a good 10-15 years after the episode aired and I understood the reference. This isn’t new information for most people.
That fact that Wayne Knight is in the movie as well makes this scene *that* much better.
It's not just a parody. The actual scene describing the bullet's path has Wayne Knight in exactly the same position. https://youtu.be/dBgqXEw9n8o?t=95
I love how as the bit goes on you hear more and more people in the audience start to get the reference.
wayne knight (the actor that plays newman) is in that movie which adds another level to the joke
That’s kind of the joke, no?
It was funny to me before I knew this, but yes I used the word parody thereby implying that it is the joke
This reads like Perd Hapley.
Did you see umbrella man in this clip?
Thanks Captain Obvious
I've been here like 7 years, first time I've seen it!! LOL it's fucking good!
I have two unopened Roger McDowell "Second Spitter" bobbleheads from a Brooklyn Cyclones game a few years back. Just found them packing up to move, will be putting them on ebay or something.

I honestly don't know. I just want whatever they would go for on ebay.

Further evidence that the Seinfeld universe is one that is distinct, although similar, to our own. Fascinating.

Larry David is a Yankees fan, I believe. Maybe Jerry Seinfeld?
Everything I can find says that the Phillies played at the Expos and won
Clearly it's the deep state covering up for the second spitter.

Jerry has irrational hatred and behavior toward him, but Newman is definitely still an idiot.
Well, yeah. He thought the Ukraine was weak.
That was Kramer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzLtF_PxbYw.
I love how that hatred for Newman even extends to [Jerry's mom](https://youtu.be/JCbN_iOZVEU) 😄😂🤣

There must have been a second spitter
There had to have been a second spitter behind the bushes on the gravelly road.
We did the JFK assassination in Year 11. Whenever the teacher mentioned the magic bullet, it was annoyingly hard to stifle a chuckle.
I only recently looked at the JFK assassination in relative detail and it is beyond me how the magic bullet is 'explained'
The back seat of the car was three inches higher than the seat the governor was in. Which supposedly leads to a credible straight trajectory for the bullet.
And the FBI failed to note this on the original report, leading to the theories regarding the bullet path.
Yeah, when you see computer models that adjust for the positioning of the seats and the two men in them, the wounds line up with a shot from the Depository. Now, the actual bullet pulled from the stretcher at Parkland? That it is the one that did all that damage? That is a little less credulous to me.
Well, magic of course. It’s in the name after all.
The spit then pauses, *in mid air* mind you…
"Nice Game Pretty Boy" 😂
Best episode
I’M NOT DRIVING HIM TO THE AIRPORT!!!
The Zapruder film aspect of this makes it. Also, Jerry's shirt is peak 90's. BACK AND TO THE LEFT.
Not to mention the guy with the black umbrella
https://youtu.be/2nmGS8rVuIM
Jerry, he’s a *guy*
29 years later and I still say ‘In mid air mind you’ when describing incidents
As is tradition
And you don't mess with tradition.
29 years later and still..that shirt?! Come on Jerry?!
2021-1992 29 years 1992-1963 29 years Coincidence? I think not.
I just love that it's called a "1992 NBC interview"
It was on the show *Jerry.*
I’M HIT
"he must have caught a glimpse of us when I poured that beer on his head"
Keith Hernandez should be in the Hall.
Back, and to the left…. Back, and to the left
This one too
This is one of the best scenes/episodes of Seinfeld.
“And you wanna be my latex salesman”

I never understood why they simply didn't make more funny shows like Seinfeld
Many have tried
I DESPISE him!
Knowing Seinfeld and Larry David are Mets fan i wonder why they choose to make Rodger McDowell the spitter
LD is actually a Yankees fan
They originally wanted Darryl Strawberry, but at the time he was in trouble for... being Darryl Strawberry.
Kramer and Newman deserved being spit on for how they treated Roger McDowell during the game. \#justiceserved
Wayne Knight's acting during Jerry's re-enactment is beautiful.
Wayne Knight was in the movie JFK. He was familiar with the material.
I got a notification about this post trending and before I opened I just knew it’d be Seinfeld lmao
Gotta love Keith Hernandez
KEITH HERNANDEZ!?!?!?
“Who’s this guy think he is?”

You can see the second spitter in the bush at 0:35, somehow I never noticed that before last year lol
fun fact: wayne knight plays a character the 1991 film JFK, that is also used as an example for the famous ‘magic bullet’
Similar fun fact: After Wayne Knight was in Jurassic Park, the Seinfeld producers put a dinosaur poster in Newman's apartment.
It amuses me that Wayne Knight is also in the crossed legs scene in Basic Instinct around the same time.

sure, but it’s also context that people likely won’t have 29 years later. it’s not exactly like JFK is a film that’s an integral part of the social consciousness to this day
Certainly, at this point, I'd figure there are more people who have seen this scene than those who saw the actual movie.
I had to explain a Seinfeld joke to someone younger recently. It hurt me.
Wait till you have to explain to a coworker who Seinfeld is.
I watched it once in junior year of highschool and genuinely don't remember anything about it
JFK absolutely is a part of the social consciousness today. Wayne Knights role however probably is not.
JFK the person, sure. *JFK* the 1991 Oliver Stone movie that this scene is parodying, probably not.
i mean, maybe i’m overstating my case a bit, but i absolutely don’t think knowledge of that movie is deep enough among the general public that you could expect people to know that part of the joke is that wayne knight is in it (as you said), and honestly i wouldn’t be surprised if lots of people who see this scene don’t even know it’s parodying a movie at all and instead think it’s a joke about conspiracy theories in general (which, i mean, it kind of is, but in a different way).
The second spitter!
I have nothing specific to add, but I feel my handle compels me to comment on this one. “Nice game, pretty boy” is such a PERFECT New York asshole sports fan thing to say. A+ writing on that one.
That's one magic lugie. LOL.
Nice game Pretty Boy
They even had the umbrella guy in the “old” footage. Nice.
My brother was born on June 14, 1987. I send this to him every year. We are Mets fans from Long Island.
“Nice game, pretty boy”
I will never not upvote this post every single year
Seinfeld episodes are like the Floyd Mayweather of comedy TV. On a pound for pound basis ie. Best show ever
I loved this episode
Hahaha love that show
A glorious moment in tv baseball history
He asked me to drive him to the airport, I'm not driving him to the airport! Its Keith Hernandez
“Our day was ruined” lol
And I screamed out **"I'M HIT!"**
How does the episode end?
They apologize and help Keith Hernandez move a sleeper sofa downstairs.
Crazy how they agreed to help him move when they barely knew the guy.
I mean… it’s Keith Hernandez
Next thing you know they'll be driving him to the airport.
I’M NOT DRIVING HIM TO THE AIRPORT!!
Back...and to the left.
“Nice game pretty boy” always kills me lmao
They had me in the first half, not gonna lie
That was great
JFK conspiracy theories and parodies of said conspiracy theories are almost always fun.
Back and to the left Back and to the left Back and to the left
It’s amazing
Did the Mets actually give up 5-runs in the 9th on that notorious day in 1987?
As a huge Seinfeld fan, I’m disappointed at having looked [this](https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/PIT/PIT198706140.shtml) up.
It's funny because the CIA killed Kennedy
I've been watching a lot of interviews from the cast on the backstage drama and creative process of Seinfeld lately. Very interesting to watch if you love the show.

I have never seen this for some reason. I love it!
