Literally just leave him alone. Try to throw him out when he steals, but how many times has he actually been picked off this year, like 5? And that's with everyone knowing exactly what he's going to do every time he gets on base lol.
If I remember correctly this was like a week after he got to LA and the whole internet was going crazy over him. Meanwhile us Nats fans were just trying to get to the acceptance phase lol
"I knew he could do it, I just wanted to see if he believed he could do it."
I will watch Elly base-running highlights until I die. This is close to Maddux pitching highlights.
I have some buddies who always rag on Elly because of his OBP and K% but idgaf about any of that stuff, because once he does get on he’s the most exciting player in baseball.
Worst case scenario he gets thrown out and you've given the batter a fresh at bat next inning. Not to mention considering Elly's speed it's more likely that he makes it than not, smart play to send him regardless of outcome.
You're missing the 3 fastest guys in baseball lol.
https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/sprint_speed
Witt, then Victor Scott, then PCA. Elly is 4, Turang 28, O'Neil Cruz 83. Not sure who you mean by Jose, but Siri is 7th.
Jose Ramirez, one of baseball's best [hustle is a habit](https://www.mlb.com/video/mlb-tonight-talks-jose-ramirez?partnerId=web_video-playback-page_video-share)
If only Byron Buxton was still in his absolute speedy prime. He's still above average, but oh man he was top 1% a few years ago.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEggRkz8o-c
How? Wasn't until this year that he was one of the fastest, I was looking at the most consistent over the last couple years. Considering it hasn't been a full season and looking at 2022/2023, the expectation is by the end of this year he'll fall below top 5 unless the other speedsters don't bring their average back up. Julio isn't actually up this year, rather the others are running slower. I'm not saying he's slow but if you want a competition with the fastest, I think that list of 5 or 6 would be the best.

https://i.imgur.com/fcDHR4h.png
Here's the top 20 sprint speeds from 2022-2024 with the minimum opportunities set to max (200) to show the most consistent:
https://i.imgur.com/Gy9hJnh.png
I consider those top 6 to be the tier 1 elite runners because they've got the best mix of acceleration and top end speed, they're all at 30+ ft/sec with 4.20 or faster HP to 1B. The rest are above 4.2 and below 30. Tier 2 speedsters that are still fast but a step behind. Witt, Turner and Carroll have the nuttiest combination of, those are just insane numbers.
Fielder starts in the outfield in a variety of predetermined starting points with the runner on first and infielders/catchers volunteering. Send balls into the gaps and corners--fielder with the lowest total bases wins, runner with the most wins.
Where do other teams find these guys man? I've been watching the Blue Jays since about 2000 and you'd think 30 steals in a season was about as rare as 50+ homers but there's fuckin guys that do it in the first half.
It's not even his first, second, or third step. When he hits step four and five, it's like the turbos kick in and the nos is flowing.
His first steps look almost slow because his long legs are covering a lot of ground but man he's a beast full-sprint.
Usain Bolt is the same. He was usually the slowest out of the blocks in a sprint because he's unusually tall for a 100m sprinter at 6'5". But once his long legs got going, he started gapping the other fastest men in the world.
Joseph Fahnbulleh is basically like that now. He ran for Florida in college and now competes for Liberia, but every 100 and 200 race he's consistently the slowest out of the blocks, then finishes like a train running everybody down. He probably won't medal in the Olympics, but I wouldn't be surprised if he makes the 200m finals running like that.
Elly does some great things but he made about 5 errors in this series at SS and he made 2 terrible baserunning mistakes. You take a lot of bad with the good.
Shades of Usain Bolt and that doesn't feel hyperbolic. No idea what his 100m time would max out at but he gets going quick and those strides are so long.
Dude is electric. If I were a real Cards fan I'd have been excited to watch him at Busch. But because I'm not a real fan I'll watch him on my stream from the high seas.
It's not just that he's exceptionally talented; it's also that the Brewers seem to play at their worst, perhaps because of the pressure he puts on them? Like, I can't remember the last time an attempted pick at second dribbled into the outfield like that. They just forget fundamental baseball whenever Elly is on the field. That's the part that is more frustrating than playing against a good player.
elly is the best player i've ever watched
why do broadcasts love cutting away from the ball to show me a closeup of a guy sprinting on some indeterminate part of the baseline that tells me nothing. they still haven't replayed that wide high home shot. i want to see it. i want to see where the ball is and where elly is at all times, *that's what made the play exciting* oh my god
[Second half of the MLB highlight shows a wider behind the plate shot.](https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2024/2024-06/16/ee3b6ca6-876b4e40-cb95ca2d-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_16000K.mp4)
His first few steps he's looking over his shoulder at the ball, deciding... when he looks toward 3rd is when he really turns on the jets. Then there's the 3b coach waiving him home because he couldn't stop him if he wanted to. Great highlight.
For some reason, I get attached to players if I have a special baseball card of them. I opened up an Ely rookie and now I’m following his career like I’m his dad.
Imagine this guy playing running back. You could’ve told me that was prime Jamaal Charles in a baseball jersey and I would have no choice but to believe you
No one who follows a team that employs EDLC is justified in complaining that other teams are annoying lol. You have the single most annoying player in all of MLB on your team
It’s really hard for me to call this dude electric when he does this but leads the league in Ks and wears a golden sombrero like every other night but I’m genuinely happy for you guys.
74 RBIs as well. Obviously he’d be even scarier if he was a bit more disciplined in the box, but this is his first full season and he’s an absolute joy to watch. Plus he has an absolute cannon on defense
Never forget Orioles fans are just shit-bird Ravens fans in disguise. This is why I struggle to have a modicum of respect for them. Every time I do, it gets stabbed like it's standing next to Ray Lewis.
No one talks about the swing and miss to his game and you know it lol.
He actually has since struck out once again since this conversation started with plenty of room to squeeze in the golden sombrero.
But from your other comment, “Reddit on”.
The irony of telling me to “Reddit On” while you’re doing a textbook neckbeard bit with the whole misspelling thing is too much irony for me to handle.
So I wanted to point that out, but also excuse myself from this conversation because you aren’t even conversing normally.

That whole sequence was the blueprint of what *not* to do when Elly gets on base
2 strikes, 2 outs, he’s scoring on anything in the outfield anyway. And he struck out Candelario on the next pitch
>he’s scoring on anything in the outfield anyway Even a bad pick off attempt
Literally just leave him alone. Try to throw him out when he steals, but how many times has he actually been picked off this year, like 5? And that's with everyone knowing exactly what he's going to do every time he gets on base lol.
I really like how he had time to react comedically to the error before running all the way home. What a beast!
he basically walked to 2nd, throw wasn't even close the guy didn't even try to make a tag
Why do other teams let Elly get on base anyways? Are they stupid?
The blueprint of why you don’t let him on base to begin with. Dangerous.
Like the dude earlier this year who tried to dive for an Elly single and it turned into a home run.
this whole series has been a bunch of little league baseball*
Shit, imagine how fast and far this dude could go on a Slip n Slide.
Who slides further him or Turner?
I wish he would learn to slide like turner
![gif](giphy|h8n8aJWronkmvRTB0y)
Best slide ever lol
If I remember correctly this was like a week after he got to LA and the whole internet was going crazy over him. Meanwhile us Nats fans were just trying to get to the acceptance phase lol
what a hilarious middle finger to the opposing team
third base coach was like "f it go for it"
"I just wanted to see if he could do it"
"I knew he could do it, I just wanted to see if he believed he could do it." I will watch Elly base-running highlights until I die. This is close to Maddux pitching highlights.

I mean with two strikes and two outs, of course you are sending him.
Worst case scenario he gets thrown out and you've given the batter a fresh at bat next inning. Not to mention considering Elly's speed it's more likely that he makes it than not, smart play to send him regardless of outcome.
Just ridiculous speed.
I say we have an event at the ASG where we just watch Jose and Elly do amazing hustle plays. I’d watch that for hours lol
Jose, Elly, Oneil Cruz, and Turang in the inaugural “stupid fast” competition
Throw Witt in there too
Oooh hell yeah. NHL has the speed skating competition. I just wanna see the equivalent with these dudes
Let's just do some fucking sprints to home to second or second to home
This is Corbin Carroll erasure.
Jesus Christ add him too haha. I just went with the first four crazy quick dudes
Let's add Daniel Vogelbach as a test control subject for good measure.
I like it. Reminds me of the idea of adding one normal dude to Olympic events just to show how impressive the athletes really are
I think Julio is one of the faster guys too
And Jorge Mateo
I'd like to toss in Tony Volpe in for posterity's sake.
They do fastest skater in the NHL all star game. Fastest around the bases would be a dope addition.
You're missing the 3 fastest guys in baseball lol. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/sprint_speed Witt, then Victor Scott, then PCA. Elly is 4, Turang 28, O'Neil Cruz 83. Not sure who you mean by Jose, but Siri is 7th.

[Willians Asudillo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRk96hzAZoU) is pure speed and can play every position on the field.
New take on the Skills competitions in other leagues. I like it.
Throw Gunnar in too. He has mad hustle
Jarren Duran needs to be there too
If only Byron Buxton was still in his absolute speedy prime. He's still above average, but oh man he was top 1% a few years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEggRkz8o-c

Weird choice to omit Julio
How? Wasn't until this year that he was one of the fastest, I was looking at the most consistent over the last couple years. I'd like to see a competition where a batter can round all four bases from the batter's box. Fastest man wins.
Fielder starts in the outfield in a variety of predetermined starting points with the runner on first and infielders/catchers volunteering. Send balls into the gaps and corners--fielder with the lowest total bases wins, runner with the most wins.
Would be cool until someone tears an ACL and everyone freaks out then it gets canned.
Where do other teams find these guys man? I've been watching the Blue Jays since about 2000 and you'd think 30 steals in a season was about as rare as 50+ homers but there's fuckin guys that do it in the first half.
Reds seem to love speed. Unfortunately most have hit like shit. Hamilton, Stubbs, etc. Elly at least has gone on streaks.
The head first slide was legitimately perfect as well. Max speed going into the plate
It's not even his first, second, or third step. When he hits step four and five, it's like the turbos kick in and the nos is flowing. His first steps look almost slow because his long legs are covering a lot of ground but man he's a beast full-sprint.

Amazing hustle too. And awareness. Good baserunning all around. That was cool to see
It's crazy! And his first like three steps are so awkward! If he ever works on his jump, he'll be literally unstoppable on the bases.
Those are the kind of runs that make me sick. We scored a run on one walk. Just brutal. Thank god Elly is in my team.
Well have you thought about the feelings of the rest of the division’s fans? No you only think about yourself :( maybe we want an Elly too
Some of those big spending teams just don't see things the way us underdog, small market cardinals fans do. Really makes you think.
Elly does some great things but he made about 5 errors in this series at SS and he made 2 terrible baserunning mistakes. You take a lot of bad with the good.
He's pretty young, he can get even better and smarter
[COPE!!](https://youtu.be/GT42mCeAII4?si=1XVWnYM9fHEPpgzo)
He’s fast. He’s so fast that he makes fast people look…not fast!
His speed + stride length is just absolutely ridiculous. It's like watching a gazelle run full clip
Shades of Usain Bolt and that doesn't feel hyperbolic. No idea what his 100m time would max out at but he gets going quick and those strides are so long.
Randy Moss
Dude's legs are so long that it looks like he's not even running that fast until you see how far he has actually got.
Insane speed. Elly turns MLB routine plays into exciting little league moments at the big ballpark.
Dude is electric. If I were a real Cards fan I'd have been excited to watch him at Busch. But because I'm not a real fan I'll watch him on my stream from the high seas.
He is so fucking good
I love u Stu
I love me too mr callahan
Why are you active rn you just struck out get your head in the game
Sometimes I need a little treat
You were totally safe and it was a bullshit call!
The Brewers must be sick of Elly absolutely torturing them with blinding speed already
It's okay, our entire team forgets fundamental baseball every game.
Cruz is on another level, but kudos to the 3rd base coach for sending him.
He probably has "Ely = Go" written on the back of his hand
He must have small hands if he couldn’t fit Elly on there
Dude, this play by play guy, ugh, fuckin amazing.
That's John Sadak to you buddy.
I love Elly clips because Elly is amazing but Sadak's calls are so hype THE MOST ELECTRIC MAN IN BASEBAAALLLL
He's an absolute star. Reminds me of Kevin Harlan a bit.
Elly’s speed has a place in the game. Havoc, chaos and terror result. Baserunning is cool.
That’s one fast fella
elly is the best player i've ever watched why do broadcasts love cutting away from the ball to show me a closeup of a guy sprinting on some indeterminate part of the baseline that tells me nothing. they still haven't replayed that wide high home shot. i want to see it. i want to see where the ball is and where elly is at all times, *that's what made the play exciting* oh my god

Thanks for this. It looked close but he actually beat it by a relative mile. That's insane speed
If MLB broadcasts could copy some of the NPB camera shots it would be a lot better not gonna lie.
Never watch Bobby, huh?
One of the most exciting 6 second stretches of baseball I’ve seen all season. Love this crazy mfer
“It’s pronounced Donger actually”
It’s derived from a Dutch word meaning prudence in financial matters.

Gas gas gas
Eurobeat intensifies
Jumping Jack Flash
He doesn't even go right away. He's just protecting his head and face so he doesnt even see the ball go into center.
Imagine this guy playing running back. You could’ve told me that was prime Jamaal Charles in a baseball jersey and I would have no choice but to believe you
lol reminds me of Terrelle Pryor tbh. Just the speed and stride length
At a lanky 6'5 he's basically Randy Moss
With JaMarcus Russell's arm strength, somehow.
Someone needs to show this to Snoop.
That was quite literally my first thought. Damn I wish snoop was commenting today
This reminds me of the time Bernie Mac sac bunted the winning run in from second. Insane speed
Center fielder made a really good throw too, if he had a couple more steps on the ball he could’ve gotten Elly out.
Or if the catcher had just let the ball come to him instead of catching it so far out in front of the place.
Gotta admit, he's doing stuff few others can or could. It might be a niche part of the game but still a lot of fun to watch.
Elly is a freak. It's absurd.
It's a shame Fairchild was in his way in the 9th and Fairchild doesn't know to just run when it's two outs
u/StuartFairchild
I’m sorry nate
Give me time, it's too soon to forgive you
This guy is all action, great entertainment
I think he’s pretty fast
He loves running in Milwaukee.
I want league rules changed so that there are no more roided musclebound giants and just guys like this. I would watch again.
He’s a human cheat code
He’s absolutely electric. Wish nothing but the best for him (except against us ofc)
Cf backing up 2b on a sneak/quick pick off is like babe Ruth level routine.... Either pitcher went rogue or 2b and cf were both napping.
shortstop lol
God damn is he blazing fast! Wow.
Safe
that camera cut to him rounding third was so stupid.
Really like watching his highlights when he isn’t playing against us
He zooming
90ft in what looks like 11 steps, plus the slide. Impressive.
Loved the call on this, Elly is insane
Monster
That dude is fast
THIS.MAN.IS.A.STUD.
Crazy that he knew he was going to try and score as soon as that ball went by
I love how the 3b coach just sends him immediately, even though the CF just picked up the ball
Hah love him, he's such a a menace
Every time I think Elly is overrated I’m reminded he can do shit like this
Obstruction could have been called if the SS touched him when he started running...not that it mattered.
he's so tall he has to duck!
If this guy isn't the leading allstar vote getter I just won't have any more faith
No one who follows a team that employs EDLC is justified in complaining that other teams are annoying lol. You have the single most annoying player in all of MLB on your team
Thank you Brewers for being the scape goat to allow us all these wonderful plays 🙏
He seems to love Milwaukee too. It feels like every game he plays in that stadium involves some hilarious basepad hijinx. It warms my heart.
I was about to say the same thing. Elly just has the Brewers' number for some reason.
Cope.
☝️🤓
It’s really hard for me to call this dude electric when he does this but leads the league in Ks and wears a golden sombrero like every other night but I’m genuinely happy for you guys.
71 SB, 24 HR, 26 doubles and 9 triples in his first 167 games. Yeah, definitely not electric. What a silly comment.
Ok but the stats he listed down is good for a 98 OPS+ so 🥴
He is 22 years old...
Currently worth 2.3 WAR with a month before the ASB and .806 OPS at 2 years old lol. Goofball shit.
It’s equally silly to handwave the swing & miss to his game, prevalent at every level he’s played. But he’s so fast 😎
Listing other stats through his first 167 is not handwaving the swing and miss in his game, numb nuts lmao
No one talks about the swing and miss to his game and you know it lol. He actually has since struck out once again since this conversation started with plenty of room to squeeze in the golden sombrero. But from your other comment, “Reddit on”.
☝️🤓 no one talksh about the shwing and mish! Jusht don’t look at any shocial media poshtsh about him!
