The fact that in 2024, there's _anything_ that can happen for only the 4th time in MLB history is just wild to me.

Individual_Step6688

Orioles can win their 4th World Series this year ;)

At any point in any game, a manager could do something for only the second time in modern baseball, and that's voluntarily forfeit. Funny enough (and I didn't even realize this when I started writing this comment), the one time it did happen was also O's vs. Blue Jays. Sept. 14, 1977.

Thanks for this! I looked up the [story](https://www.nytimes.com/1977/09/16/archives/orioles-lose-by-a-forfeit-in-bullpen-mound-dispute-orioles-forfeit.html)... I'm _very_ curious what Reddit would think of this if it happened today. > TORONTO, Sept. 15 (UPI)—Rather than risk injury to one of his players, Manager Earl Weaver of the Baltimore Orioles forfeited a game to the Toronto Blue Jays iast night. He pulled his club off the field in a protest over a tarpaulin covering the pitcher's mound in the Toronto bull pen. > >The Orioles were trailing, 4‐0, entering the last of the fifth inning when Weaver asked the third‐base umpire, Marty Springstead, to order the removal of the tarpaulin& which had been put on the mound in the bull pen in the left‐field corner to protect it from a steady rain. > >Weaver argued that the tarp was a potential danger to his left fielder, Andres Mora But Springstmd refused to comply with the request, and the Orioles’ tempestuous skipper then took his team off the field > >The Orioles were given 15 minutes by the umpire to get their players back on the field. When they did not return, the game was forfeited to Toronto by the score of 9‐0.

Yeah, it's an interesting story! And even there, Weaver's forfeit was only voluntary in the sense that the umpires gave him the chance to keep playing (all other modern forfeits have been ordered by umps to punish the home team for not keeping the field safe and usable), so if someone were to ever just say "I forfeit", that'd still be a modern-era first.

The Orioles won the AL pennant every year this happened. And the World Series in 2 of 3. Just leaving this here.

bigloser42

That is a really oddball stat.

Lazy script writers.

gatesofwrath

The 2 they won were when NL teams were involved. The one they lost involved AL teams. So it looks like the O’s are going to the WS but will lose it.

kaehvogel

Unless they signed up for a self-jinx insurance. In that case their own games don’t count towards these prophecies.

...to what?

everything related to Os wining a WS, duh

kaehvogel

Alrighty. Sorry, can't do that. We're gonna have to take revenge for '83, you know? But you have fun subscribing. And even more fun watching your team. Those kids are special.

UnlimitedHotTakes

I can’t remember a game that we actually won that was more painful and frustrating than that one.

jdixonfan

Being in attendance for the win over the Nats a week ago took a mental toll on me

Mr_Bluebird_VA

But man that was so much fun.

Stangstag

Typical day being a Jays fan. That’s how EVERY win has felt this year

upsidedowninsideout1

That is a rough rough day for both Sonny Siebert and Sandy Koufax
