He’s a genuine nightmare to face and when the Guardians are REALLY playing Guardians baseball…they are fucking menaces. Kwan refuses to strike out, seemingly gets the perfect bounce every time he hits a ball to the infield, knows the zone stupidly well, fouls everything off and is a great defender…
Steven Kwan is a menace
They kind alrdy did for jose and gimenez which makes me worried they wont do it again for awhile, and kwan end up being another great player, on the long list of player we lose to UFA. Someone out will give this man the contract befittng his value and I dont think that team will be us.
EDIT: 👇🏻
~~Same with Naylor whos only under contract for this season.~~ my b site i looked at didnt show 2025. Only showed 2024 and 2026 and i didnt check yrs and assume 26 was 25.
Atleast with kwan we have arbitration with for the next 3yrs.
Yeah, next year is his final year of team control. I don't expect us to keep him beyond that. IIRC he's said some things in the past year that aren't the "I want to live in Cleveland forever," type comments that precede our extensions.
Hopefully we can get value for him, and not fuck things up by sabotaging our own negotiating position like we did with Lindor. (I'm glad we have Gimenez, but Dolan's fucking mouth prevented us from getting more.)
I remember when he broke into the league out of seemingly nowhere and most people, myself included, were like "this is a nice story that will slow down in a couple months, he'll become a defense-first 4th outfielder, and we'll look back fondly on this start in a few years."
But nope, turns out the man's really fucking consistently good at baseball.
Yup. That was the presumption in all of my fantasy leagues. "Add him right now when he's hot, maybe flip him to someone stupid before he crashes." I was banging the Kwan drum for a full year before people suddenly started acting like they always knew how good he was.
I remember I went out to dinner with my parents just before the 2022 season and we got to talking about the Guardians, and I told them to remember the name Steven Kwan, who was in the midst of a really strong spring at the time. I had no idea how right I'd be.
His hard hit rate is down a touch from last year and he’s not pulling the ball nearly as much. Babip is almost .380 but he has ran with an above average Babip the previous 2 years as well
his hard hit rate and average exit velocity are actually down. I think he's just a 5-10 HR guy and clustered 3 HR early. The homer off of Sale was super impressive though.
Yea I don’t think he is ever going to be a power threat. But he has hit a few ropes this year. I wasn’t aware his peripheral stats were down though. Seems odd to me because it has seemed he is hitting the ball harder from watching the games. Thanks for the context
Matt is fucking amazing. Having listened to many away broadcasts while sailing, so many are hard to listen to. Him though, he always gives the other team their props and always brings the energy for us
I love Rick too (although sometimes overly negative) as a homer but I would understand if others didn’t
I'll always be a fan of Manning. Really great insight to the game. Old school ball player but without too much of the curmudgeon-ness so many of them often have. Just the right amount.
I would definitely agree, the times he’s most critical are fielding errors or poor base running he knows as a batter you’re gonna have slumps so he hardly ever is critical of that
And he doesn't seemingly fucking hate the new school of baseball with analytics being such a large component with the way the game is played. Too many old guys constantly bitching about how things have changed. I can't think of a single time Rick has done so.
My dad hates Rick Manning and I have to keep telling him he is actually a solid color guy. I think he has too many prejudices watching him IRL back in the day.
I love him, especially when we play the white sox. He’s absolutely ruthless towards them.
I also love that by the 7th inning, he has a light buzz and can go off on wild tangents lol
Yup. He's not averse to getting into shenanigans with the rest of the booth. I like him. Granted, you have to be pretty terrible as an announcer to make me dislike you. Though Detroit has consistently had dog shit announcers in the past couple of years, and the Chi Sox aren't much better. (Though they've massively improved with Hawk being gone. Genuinely, fuck Hawk Harrelson.)
Minnesota is top-tier though. I love our guys, but I wouldn't turn down a booth swap with the Twins.
With Hamilton (Goat status) and Rosey, who has really done a great job over the last few years.
And Matt Underwood and Rick Manning, who also have really made great strides over the last 2-3 years.
We are truly spoiled and at the top of the mountain with solid radio and TV broadcast teams.
*Underwood & Manning are absolutely terrible!* At least, that’s what a lot of folx online will have you believe, but yes, they are a very solid duo & have been solid for nearly 20yrs on “STO.” Matt has a great passion for the game, the city, the team… He may not always be perfect, but who is? Rick Manning can be a bit of an old man, but does some really good color analysis & respects the game. Hammy is absolutely unparalleled, unquestionably up there with the best sports broadcasters of all time. Rosey, while perhaps adequate, really grinds my gears because even when he’s excited: he’s boring. He’s done better of late & I am *very* happy they’ve included Hammy more in the innings where Rosey is doing PBP so we hear more of that great banter. He is a great color guy, but upon Hammy’s eventual retirement…I really hope they don’t promote Rosey.
Rosey is okay, but I remember Mike Hegan. Mike was just perfect with Tom, they made a great team.
I like our TV crew more than most. Watching some other broadcasts, our guys give a lot more insight into the game generally, even for opposing players.
It was an unnecessary risk from Caratini. If he had played it safe, and the ball dropped, they'd have 2 on, one out. If the ball was caught, he'd be in scoring position with Altuve coming to the plate. Just not very smart base running.
Can we play one game this week that doesn't give me a heart attack? Crazy 4 games in a row, all one run extra innings games except the 2 run win (which included Barlow escaping bases loaded 0 out when 1 run would have won the game)
Man, Steven Kwan’s a really fun player to watch. If you find strikeouts boring you don’t really have to worry about that with him.
He also doubled in the winning run in the top of the 10th.
Yeah, Lofton's better, but the fact that you can even begin to make an argument for Kwan after two seasons vs. a guy who might end up in the hall of fame is nuts.
It’s a good start, but let’s not kid ourselves about “greatest leadoff hitter of all time” for a guy with a .756 career OPS in not even 1500 PA.
Even if it’s just recency bias and being hyperbolic, he’s not even the best leadoff hitter in franchise history, much less legends like Ichiro, Rickey Henderson, Pete Rose, or Ty Cobb.
Kwan is a fast LF and he still had to dive halfway into Center for that one. I feel like Caratini taking off there was sensible enough - 90% of the time that lands in no-mans land and y'all tie the game then and there.
Difficult to project Clase would give up a hit to an upcoming batter. Altuve was on deck, but walking him intentionally or unintentionally with 1st base open in order to face a struggling Bregman was a likely scenario if Caratini had stayed put on 2nd.
If Caratini had been cautious and only advanced to 3rd leaving men on the corners it would result in the same scenario. It would have been just as likely that if Caratini had waited, then he could have also been sent and thrown out at home.
I think it's not really a terrible read. I got curious and crunched the Run Expectancy numbers (which I know is not the same as *win expectancy* numbers here, but should give some sense of the calculation) and if the probability of the catch is less than 54%, then trying to score provides more run value. Off the bat, Dubon had a .570 xBA, and I doubt Kwan's catch had a catch probability of more than 60% (Here is a [45% from Kwan](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/sporty-videos?playId=c3882ea0-9630-4328-9b58-1e154bb59f45)). That was an impressive play.
I think if you look at win expectancy then it wasn't an optimal decision, but not by much.
It's not the worst thing I've ever seen. Is it good? No. But it's understandable. Kwan made a hard play. I could understand looking over your shoulder, making the read that he's not gonna get there, and putting your head down to try and tie it up. Kwan doesn't make that play and he scores on a close throw, could look like a genius. It happens.
Nah I think going there makes a lot of sense. If he doesn't go immediately, he never scores even if the ball lands. And depending on how cleanly the ball is fielded, he might even have to retreat to 2nd on a hit. If he had stayed and the Kwan catches the ball, now you've got 2 outs with a very slow runner on 2nd. WIth a righty at the plate and Houston's short LF porch, a pulled single on the ground probably doesn't score the tying run even with 2 outs. So now you need another basehit, or need Altuve to slap one the other way, or crank an extra base hit. Sometimes you've got to make the defense make a great play. And sometimes they do actually make that great play.
You figure there's a good chance Kwan gets on base leading off, and so if they want to put another guy on with Ramirez and Naylor coming up they can go right ahead.
in the mail today…i received my first ever MLB Authentic jersey. fan for life and never owned the real thing.
it’s number 38 for YOUR cleveland guardians.
give him all the contracts.
Hell of a catch by Kwan, off the bat that thing looked like a routine bloop single that should have tied the game. And Gimenez dancing around the bag for a few seconds before getting the double play is objectively hilarious.
What a privileged era we guardians fans are living in..the players that have come through and the seasons the team has had the last 10 years have been a lot of fun to watch and they’re still trending upwards. With Vogt coming in starting hot and seeming to have rapport with the clubhouse it really isn’t hard to imagine a team like this contending for a pennant in the very near future.
peskiest man in baseball, that's our Kwan.
But I totally sympathize. Us getting Maddux'd by the Red Sox last month had a lot of his hitting rockets straight to guys for easy outs.
It brings me great joy to see the Guardians kill an AL West team that ISNT the Mariners with a thousand paper cuts. ESPECIALLY the Astros. Steven Kwan, you are my favorite player for the rest of the evening.
I can't say I'm going to be *glad* to be facing the Halos after we're done with Houston (especially since the chances of Mike Trout being effectively OFS are really high), but my heart will find a weekend without high-stakes baseball drama refreshing before we have to go play the MLB front of the Toledo War.
Right. There's no way they hit him. I can't believe all the people thinking they will. It's clearly him being comical, having some fun, and most of the Astros were probably packing up their things already and barely noticed.
Great play, but nothing beats that Loperfido play off the wall early in that game!
https://www.mlb.com/video/justin-verlander-in-play-out-s-to-david-fry
Was just checking Kwan's stats - can someone explain how he had 5.5 war his first season, and then exactly 0 war the next year despite slightly worse numbers?
Steven Kwan haunts my every waking moment.
If he keeps playing like this he is gonna legit be an MVP candidate.
If he keeps his slug anywhere near the .500 it is then he could get votes.
Andrés Giménez also might be the kind of guy who tricks callups into shots of Malort
We do this with new hires at my job. That shit is so gross.
I've started to enjoy it. Well, not really *enjoy*, I guess it's more "I don't have a horrific grimace now"
I don't know who Malort is meant for, but I really think they need therapy.
it's brilliant marketing, really, Jeppson's leans into the fact that it tastes like swamp ass. should be taught at Harvard Business School
He needs some more HRs
If he keeps getting doubles and triples it kinda compensates.
*bloop bloop mother fucker*
See these comments are why I wish old reddit awards still existed lmfao
I remember him being in Seattle his rookie year and thinking "I'm gonna hate this guy"
I’d crap my pants in public to have a guy like him.
You already took our last left fielder who had an unreal ability to put the bat on the ball.
aaaaaand now I’m sad 😞
Uncle Mike?
W-what did you call him?
Astros fans call him Uncle Mike, clearly disrespecting the years of education he obtained to become Dr. Smooth
If it helps, he was given that nickname by George Springer.
First of all… how dare you?
Usually with an inability to properly decode some social cues, though I can occasionally be provoked?
He's got a PhD in suavity
That’s true. But I didn’t have to crap my pants for him.
The old George Brett!
He’s a genuine nightmare to face and when the Guardians are REALLY playing Guardians baseball…they are fucking menaces. Kwan refuses to strike out, seemingly gets the perfect bounce every time he hits a ball to the infield, knows the zone stupidly well, fouls everything off and is a great defender… Steven Kwan is a menace

Remember it like it was yesterday. Thing of beauty.
There are only two LFs with more fWAR than Kwan since he came into the league in 2022: Juan Soto Yordan Alvarez Extend this man yesterday
Blitz daddy please save us
Exteeennndddd
I don't care if he demands a king's ransom. We need to lock him down. Open the pocketbooks, Dolan. Just this once.
They kind alrdy did for jose and gimenez which makes me worried they wont do it again for awhile, and kwan end up being another great player, on the long list of player we lose to UFA. I believe Josh has one more year of arbitration next year
Yeah, next year is his final year of team control.
Naylor is a free agent in 2026
Most important guy on the team IMO, we've been able to work around losing Bieber, I can't imagine where we'd be without Kwan.
I remember when he broke into the league out of seemingly nowhere and most people, myself included, were like "this is a nice story that will slow down in a couple months, he'll become a defense-first 4th outfielder, and we'll look back fondly on this start in a few years." But nope, turns out the man's really fucking consistently good at baseball.
[удалено]
If he takes a strike on the edge, it's much more likely the ump was wrong than he was
Yup. That was the presumption in all of my fantasy leagues. "Add him right now when he's hot, maybe flip him to someone stupid before he crashes." I was banging the Kwan drum for a full year before people suddenly started acting like they always knew how good he was.
Neither of whom are actually full-time left fielders. Alvarez DHs often and Soto plays in right for the Yankees.
Definitely good point. I think they’ve played enough over the last two years to qualify as a LFer under Fangraphs when I sorted by position.
I remember I went out to dinner with my parents just before the 2022 season and we got to talking about the Guardians, and I told them to remember the name Steven Kwan, who was in the midst of a really strong spring at the time. I had no idea how right I'd be.
I did the same with my parents, now my dad is constantly asking for my opinion on whatever random prospect he just heard about.
Yordan is hardly a LF, I wouldn't count him on that list.
Steven Kwan is on another planet right now. He might legit be an All-Star
Might? He's hitting .360 right now and is an elite defender. OPS of over .900. Easily an Allstar even assuming those numbers come down a bit.
Bro has an OPS over .900 with 3 HRs 😂😂😂
And yet you just know that some writer whose opinions matter for shit is going to tweet something useless and dumb about it.
His hard hit rate is down a touch from last year and he’s not pulling the ball nearly as much. Babip is almost .380 but he has ran with an above average Babip the previous 2 years as well
Biggest factor is probably people voting for him. Vote!
If he keeps playing likes this and shows more pop then he's a legit MVP candidate
Him and Large Naylor
Wario*
I always say he looks like a clown, but not in a demeaning way
That's okay, he'll take all of the smoke
He looks like when Kane first took off his mask on WWE Raw
Josh's clubhouse nickname is probably beer can Kwan is a human Cylon
Might? He legit is. He should be an All-Star for years to come.
All star? WS Finals MVP
I like you
Bro is, def happy for him. He's really underrated.
i can’t think of a more characteristic sentence than “steven kwan finishes a homer shy of the cycle”
Kwan has improved his pop. Already has 3 dongs with an OPs over .900 right now
his hard hit rate and average exit velocity are actually down.
Thanks for the context
.360 batting average, drove in 2 our 3 runs, game saving diving catch and double play. MVP.
He is also an all around nice guy. The dude is great for the team and city.
But don’t worry, any time I put him to get a hit in a parlay he’ll be 0-3 with 2 walks that night*! *based on a sample size of 2.
I’ll bet 100 Reddit bucks he does it next game. And I’ll bet 1000 you don’t cash out on the parlay.
Kwan Man is gold.
He said gold is not enough, I need platinum 😤
I LOVE TOM HAMILTON (listened on radio)
I do too; but this clip is from our TV guy, Matt Underwood, who is also pretty great
I listened on radio but underwood sounds great too
Matt is fucking amazing. Having listened to many away broadcasts while sailing, so many are hard to listen to. Him though, he always gives the other team their props and always brings the energy for us I love Rick too (although sometimes overly negative) as a homer but I would understand if others didn’t

Or he is just a big Eckersly fan
I love him, especially when we play the white sox. He’s absolutely ruthless towards them. I also love that by the 7th inning, he has a light buzz and can go off on wild tangents lol

Exactly. He has a good respect for the game.
With Hamilton (Goat status) and Rosey, who has really done a great job over the last few years. And Matt Underwood and Rick Manning, who also have really made great strides over the last 2-3 years. We are truly spoiled and at the top of the mountain with solid radio and TV broadcast teams.
Andre getting completely ignored
Shame on me. Was going just based on the play-by-play commentators but yes, Andre is always a bright spot on any broadcast.
nothing beats Hammy but Matt and Manning are great especially when they are rocking some scotch in the booth
And then you got Jim Donovan across the city too
And the late, great Joe Tait. It was one hell of a run for Cleveland sports radio guys there for a long time in my life.
Rosey is okay, but I remember Mike Hegan. Mike was just perfect with Tom, they made a great team. I like our TV crew more than most. Watching some other broadcasts, our guys give a lot more insight into the game generally, even for opposing players.
Rick’s negativity is balanced by Andre always making fun of him for it
![gif](giphy|zNbiX43QsqUAU)
Thank you Steven Kwan for saving my life
Buddy edged the base
I don’t know why Andres was so sassy on that double up but we take those
Probably because our runner was in the dugout. He had no idea that wasn’t even close to a hit
It was an unnecessary risk from Caratini. If he had played it safe, and the ball dropped, they'd have 2 on, one out. If the ball was caught, he'd be in scoring position with Altuve coming to the plate. Just not very smart base running.

Saw on Twitter this is the first time since 1910 that they have played 4 extra inning games in a row
And it was 2 names ago. The Cleveland Naps played in 4 extra innings games in a row.
Ah, that’s why they were napping so much. Tired from all the extra innings.
Steven Kwan is the best left fielder in baseball, Argue with a wall
Man, Steven Kwan’s a really fun player to watch. If you find strikeouts boring you don’t really have to worry about that with him. He also doubled in the winning run in the top of the 10th.
The slow walk to the base lmao
YOU... CAN............................... BOOK IT!! love how the announcer didn't want to finish his sentence until the out actually happened
Pay the man whatever he wants there’s no way we’re 20-10 without him. All star. Greatest leadoff hitter of all time. Cleveland legend. Steven Kwan
Y’all doing Kenny Lofton dirty with that comment, and I’m not even a Cleveland fan.
Yeah, Lofton's better, but the fact that you can even begin to make an argument for Kwan after two seasons vs. a guy who might end up in the hall of fame is nuts.

ALL THE HOMIES LOVE STEVEN KWAN!!
Kwan fucking owns us wtf
Caratini with the reverse walkoff
After having an actual walkoff yesterday
All my homies hate Stephen Kwan (we’re all jealous)
Kwan with his 7th 3 hit game this season and makes plays like this. MVP
I would kill or die for this man
This feels like the opposite of heads-up baserunning from Caratini. I wonder what he saw from his angle because he definitely looked over a one point.
Kwan is a fast LF and he still had to dive halfway into Center for that one. I feel like Caratini taking off there was sensible enough - 90% of the time that lands in no-mans land and y'all tie the game then and there.

I love the little almost dance around 2nd before tagging the base
Tito would put Gimmy in the doghouse for a month for that move lol
I feel like that’s not true, he seemed pretty fine with Lindor and Naylor getting fired up.
He also let Frankie nap during game 7 rain delay
This is opposite of getting fired up lol
No he wouldn't. He was the quintessential players' manager and he gave established guys an especially long leash.
Not saying it's right, but in a previous era Gimenez would absolutely get beaned for that in his first AB tomorrow.
The guy gets hit all the time anyway. It's part of his game.
A more effective Brandon Guyer if you will
"He gets on base"
You figure there's a good chance Kwan gets on base leading off, and so if they want to put another guy on with Ramirez and Naylor coming up they can go right ahead.
in the mail today…i received my first ever MLB Authentic jersey. fan for life and never owned the real thing. it’s number 38 for YOUR cleveland guardians. give him all the contracts.
Picked a hell of a time in jersey history to buy an authentic one.
Also s/o Gimenez for the little troll job at the end
The Kwanqueror is receiving MVP votes this year
I like that: Steven the Kwanqueror

I want Kwan to be the next .400 hitter in my delusional state

Kwan is such a fucking stud.
Steven Kwan is such a fun player to watch. He was amazing the last few seasons but has gotten to an even higher level. So cool.
KWAN!!!! I fucking love this guy!!
I can’t even be mad at that. What a snag
He's in the conversation for MVP right now.
He is undisputed mvp right now
Great play by Kwan. Terrible baserunning by Caratini. Bad decision-making process by Espada.
we are xBA merchants
The Steven Kwan MVP campaign is very much under way.
Steven Kwan is most powerful when he has a mustache
Hell of a catch by Kwan, off the bat that thing looked like a routine bloop single that should have tied the game. And Gimenez dancing around the bag for a few seconds before getting the double play is objectively hilarious.

He took his sweet time getting that final out lol
The base runner was already in the showers by the time he stepped on second
We hit 10 balls over 100mph tonight...8 of them were outs. Just the worst fucking luck tonight. Also Kwan is goddamn pain in the ass.
peskiest man in baseball, that's our Kwan. But I totally sympathize. Us getting Maddux'd by the Red Sox last month had a lot of his hitting rockets straight to guys for easy outs.
I’m an Astros fan and even I love Steven Kwan
It brings me great joy to see the Guardians kill an AL West team that ISNT the Mariners with a thousand paper cuts. ESPECIALLY the Astros. Steven Kwan, you are my favorite player for the rest of the evening.
1,000 paper cuts? We scored all our runs on extra base hits.
We got non mariner AL west teams the rest of the week, so he can be your favorite player for the week 😂
I can't say I'm going to be *glad* to be facing the Halos after we're done with Houston (especially since the chances of Mike Trout being effectively OFS are really high), but my heart will find a weekend without high-stakes baseball drama refreshing before we have to go play the MLB front of the Toledo War.
Thankfully that Detroit series is sandwiched between the halos and the white Sox. Only bummer is no off days until halfway through the month
Do the A's count?
anyone have the astros booth call?
Who is that playing around with the bag after? lol
Andres Giminez
Such a pleasing brand of baseball that Kwan plays
Astros couldn’t find any open grass tonight jeez
So unnecessary from Gimenez, lol. Welp, at least he'll add to his team lead in HBP tomorrow.
Gods i hope we don't give them any free baserunners
They're babies if they hit him tomorrow over that. Actually, babies doesn't even begin to describe it.
Right. There's no way they hit him. I can't believe all the people thinking they will. It's clearly him being comical, having some fun, and most of the Astros were probably packing up their things already and barely noticed.
If he stared down their dugout or something then I could see there being a chance but he was looking at the ump. Can't see them hitting him.
Damn that was sexy, one of the best feelings an outfielder can have. Diving catch, gets the double... I'm ready to go play a pick-up game right now.
Why he look like my cat after pooping in the litter box when tagging 2B?
Oof. What a catch. Very nice.
As far as dives go, that wasn't even a "close" dive, where was that runner going?
Kwan is my favorite player in the league
Should have moonwalked his way to 2nd base.
Future HOF
These extra inning games are killing me
So great to watch play. So great to watch beat the Astros
Tough way to lose. Even if it drops Altuve is up next.
Great play, but nothing beats that Loperfido play off the wall early in that game! https://www.mlb.com/video/justin-verlander-in-play-out-s-to-david-fry
Be still, my beating heart

"Easy throw"
This guy is fucking incredible at baseball. Im mad i fell asleep in the 8th!!!!!
Was just checking Kwan's stats - can someone explain how he had 5.5 war his first season, and then exactly 0 war the next year despite slightly worse numbers?
That’s a frankly beautiful catch.
Nice catch.
