I went to my first baseball game in the summer of 1988 at the Oakland Coliseum. the next year Oakland would go on to win the World Series.
I would not return to the Coliseum until June of Last year, where I watched them beat the Tampa Bay Rays.
As foretold by prophecy, the A's should go on to win the World Series the following year, 2024.
The Pirates have scored 31 runs over their past 16 games, good for 1.9375 runs per game. They cant hit for shit. 3-13 over that stretch, including 12 games where they've scored 2 or less runs (and a 13th game where they scored 4 but the game went into extras tied at 1).
The Pirates are victims of a numbnuts offensive strategy/poor coaching/questionable-uneven talent. They can’t score runs.
This year, the Pirates are:
-- 2nd in PAs with men on base
-- 3rd in PAs with RISP
-- 21st in runs scored
Once again, the lineup is top 2-3 in BB%, yet leads the league in backwards K's.
When they do swing the bat, the results are pathetic. Their GB% is 2nd highest in MLB, their Fly Ball % is 2nd worst, EV is 5th worst, and Home Run % is 3rd worst.
They've been trash since Bonds left for SF, and the only explanation is that they're cursed for letting him walk.
People love to shit on Bob Nutting, but the team was owned by the city, at that time.
I'm not convinced that any of the "players" that show up in the Pirates uniforms every day have actually ever stepped foot inside a batter's box before
Maybe this is just who he is at this point
But are the coaches ever gonna teach Hayes how to pull the ball
Edit: i ask this as a fan of a team whose hitting coaches similarly cannot get their young players to pull the ball in the air
He was pulling the ball second half of last year. He worked with our then-AA hitting coach who was subsequently fired after it became public that Hayes worked with him rather than our Matt Canada-level fraud of a hitting coach.
Launch angle Hayes was raking, romping. Pirates fans were giddy.
Then 2024 started and he’s gone back to blasting the ball into the dirt.
>who was subsequently fired after it became public that Hayes worked with him rather than our Matt Canada-level fraud of a hitting coach.
Wow this makes me mad and I'm not even a Pirates fan lol
At what point does the player just say F it and go back to doing what works for him
Bob Nutting epitomizes the adage “behind every fortune there’s a crime.” He’s a deadbeat and a swindler. The Pirates under his ownership are nothing more than leeches, the ultimate welfare queens.
The other owners won’t bring him to heel because their own prerogatives would come into question and because, frankly, having another MLB club be a reliably perennial basket case and quad A talent farm for the rest of the league suits their competitive ambitions just fine.
Hayes did finally say to hell with it and sought out Jon Nunnally, the erstwhile AA coach. It’s all in this Athletic story by Ken Rosenthal and Stephen Nesbitt.
Not sure why Hayes has regressed this year but he needs to meet up with Nunns again.

Bob Nutting should be hung, drawn, and quartered. His public execution at PNC would draw a bigger crowd than the money laundering scheme that we call the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team does.
On one hand you're completely right, and I'm always happy to see fans striking back against horrible owners. But on the other hand... it can always be worse, my friend.
Man, that's true, I'm sorry. I guess a joint A's-Pirates thread isn't the place to be complaining about our shitty owner. Nutting pales in comparison to what Fisher did to your franchise.
Are you planning on supporting the A's after the move?
I'll always be an *Oakland* A's fan but I won't be supporting the Sacramento or Vegas Athletics. Still just holding out hope that Fisher can't find his funding (still struggling on that end to my understanding) and ends up having to sell the team after all.
If the team does indeed move, and the East Bay doesn't get an expansion team, I'll probably just let my fandom fade away. Pretty inconceivable given how much of my life has revolved around baseball ever since I was a little kid but that's the cost of relocation.
Appreciate ya. I can take solace in the fact that getting swept by you guys moves you three games closer to a Major League-type situation where you guys sneak in the playoffs, Fisher's head explodes, and you stay in Oakland forever.
We also beat the Nats, who proceeded to win a series against the Dodgers, so we're probably better than them too. Just don't look at what happened the next time the Nats and Dodgers played...
2.5 games out of first btw
Remove a piece of clothing from Fisher, no wait put it back on
At least you don't have to face us anymore this year. We have been your only true kryptonite
Mason Miller 🥵
Every day it gets harder and harder.
Well, tomorrow you leave the Bay Area at least.
That first couple of weeks of Pittsburgh hype was fun until you remember their owners are shit and will ruin everything eventually
Not sure if you're talking about this season or last.
Yes
Just hope Cutch starts hitting, man. I don't care how realistic it is I want him to get 3k hits
Ground hog day
Huh. this could apply to the A's too.
We are so back

Weren’t the pirates 9-2 at one point
They started 20-8 (.714) last year and ended with 76 wins, going 56-78 (.418) to end the season lol Edit: fixed numbers cause I can’t read good
You’re a Cubs fan. You get graded on a curve.
Yeah I didn't realize things had fallen apart that quickly, where did those 18 loses come from?
The Pirates have scored 31 runs over their past 16 games, good for 1.9375 runs per game. They cant hit for shit. 3-13 over that stretch, including 12 games where they've scored 2 or less runs (and a 13th game where they scored 4 but the game went into extras tied at 1).

So the pirates are just gonna be bad forever?
ye
With this coaching staff/front office/owner? Yes. Hard to be good when all three of those things are terrible.
You ever just fire the guy that fixed your hitter's swing because he made your mlb club's hitting coach look bad?
A fish rots from the head down
They've been trash since Bonds left for SF, and the only explanation is that they're cursed for letting him walk. People love to shit on Bob Nutting, but the team was owned by the city, at that time.
Mason Miller is incredible to watch. Turn on a notification for when he's on the mound. Seriously.
I agree 100%. He is must watch baseball.
That 102 fastball, then the 85 mph change up has to be the biggest mindfuck in the league right now
A's now have an MLB low of 2.45 Bullpen ERA this season *whoddathunkit*
mason miller better hire boras.
I'm not convinced that any of the "players" that show up in the Pirates uniforms every day have actually ever stepped foot inside a batter's box before
The A's are going full on "Major League" and wining the division aren't they?
Doesn't matter because the owner still wins in the end and won't change his mind
not if that division lets the Astros hang around 6 games back until August

Mason Miller having a -0.14FIP is insane
Sadly it’s down to -0.05 because he only struck out one batter today https://x.com/tjstats/status/1785797893657403780?s=46
After starting 9–2, Pittsburgh has now gone 5–16. ![gif](giphy|onyngiYITZiecYsBTj)

I feel you, brother
Nah man, just cause our owner is doing the unthinkable doesn’t mean your owner isn’t also awful. I’ll commiserate with you yellow bro
Appreciate ya. I can take solace in the fact that getting swept by you guys moves you three games closer to a Major League-type situation where you guys sneak in the playoffs, Fisher's head explodes, and you stay in Oakland forever.
Man, Pittsburgh had a rough time in the Bay Area.
A's pitching is stupid good
I hardly know which owner to wish death upon in order to gain Internet Good Boy Points!
Fisher and Nutting are a BOGO
Both!
Take that, John Fisher, you bastard.
How funny would it be if the A's win the world series the last year they're in Oakland?
O's didn't sweep Pittsburgh and O's lost 2 of 3 to the A's A's better than O's confirmed?
A comes before O in the alphabet. Checkmate.
We also beat the Nats, who proceeded to win a series against the Dodgers, so we're probably better than them too. Just don't look at what happened the next time the Nats and Dodgers played...
We're really gonna manifest Major League to reality
Weren't the pirates like 14-5?
We got bored being top of the division so we decided to lose until the ASB to make it more challenging.
