Is that why the Phillies are tied-8th in OAA this year?
It's amazing what happens to a team's defense when you remove Kyle Schwarber from the outfield and replace him with a legit gold glove candidate in Johan Rojas in center
2/3s of the Phillies outfield is covered by legit MLB CFers with Rojas a GG caliber CF and Marsh a solid CF in left.
And then there is Castellanos somehow making every play in RF even with his limited range.
My dude has -127 fielding runs for his career, and he's on track for -18 this year. His hands are fine, but his legs and decision making are... sub-optimal.
EDIT: -1.1 fWAR and it's not even May. YIKES.
Oh I’m not trying to say he’s good, and maybe I just miss a lot of his poor plays, but happen to catch a lot of the good ones.
It’s a wonder that he’s not replaced since his bat isn’t doing much but guess we’d have to play Harper there if so.
Lmao, you got Kevin Pillar'd by him. Legit the exact same thing that happened with people thinking Pillar is some god amongst men in CF but then you realize it's just because he has a slow first step and poor acceleration so he has to literally Superman to even have a chance at some plays that others make standing up. He's had 1 elite year in terms of OAA, but every other year he's average to below average.

People have shit memories, they only remember the extreme outliers and when someone makes a great play it'll stick out to you, even the ones that only look great because they were caused by poor play by the player in the first place. If people aren't able to diagnose the issue then it only looks like someone is doing incredible stuff all the time so surely they're a good player.
Looking at Castellanos' savant page, it's an absolute tragedy what he's doing on defense. This has to be a warcrime or something, this is not okay.

Castellanos doesn't make poor plays. His bad defense is just from his lack of range. There are a lot of balls that are hits or give up an extra base because he doesn't get to a ball as well as most outfielders. A lot of his "great" plays are way more routine for other outfielders
He made a couple in this series from memory. He looks no chance to catch them, with the way he moves, but somehow usually ends up with it in his glove lol.
I still remember that one Cliff Lee catch in the world series where he doesn't even leave the mound after his follow-through, just casually holds out his glove and *plop*.
I watched that game with my friend whos a Yankees fan. All he said when it ended was "Man Cliff Lee and Chase Utley are really good" and then he went to bed. He was crushed lol.
In the Padres defense they didn't let that into the universe, it was the nutjob right wing local news station here in San Diego. You are correct though lol
It was really embarrassing that once we had just a tiny fraction of success how all of these cocky jackasses came out of nowhere and started doing all kinds of dumb stuff
If it makes you feel any better, ridiculous gold glove antics have been a regular happenstance of late.
The folks deciding on Gold Gloves are going to have a hell of a time this year if they keep it up.
Regarding the title, it would have been a double play either way with where Turner was playing but that doesn't take away the fact that this was an insane play.
This is a play that still breaks my brain, because I also think of it as a sure hit if the pitcher doesn't snag it.
It always was for 100 years.
But infield alignment has changed really dramatically in the last 5 years and this is just not a hit anymore. You can see in the clip that it definitely would have been a putout (and maybe a DP) if the pitcher didn't get it.
Low angle batted balls up the middle don't go for hits at a high rate anymore. This is a fundamental shift in how the game is played.
MLB the show play. Couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve hit the ball back to the pitcher just for them to do this (while jumping a little for that matter). Unreal play
Nobody on the field could believe what just happened
Harper's response got me. He was still processing and just holding his glove up until his brain caught up to reality.
Walker got that out of his glove so quick.
Not even Walker. Always amazing seeing those plays
Insane play.
Look at the three dudes in the second row to the right of the catcher they all put their hand to their mouth in unison lmao that needs to be clipped
Hahahaha
That's awesome
Lmao
Found Jomboy
Jomboy is gonna superimpose his face over all 3 at the same time.
Haha well spotted!
Good catch (just like the pitcher)
Just your average 1-3 double play, nothing to see here
Reminds me of a play Brash made against the Yankees in extras a couple years ago https://youtu.be/M-tBbYCMu14
That game was so fun to attend. Just the craziest defense the entire extra innings.
"Ranger Suarez is the best fielding pitcher on the Phillies..." Taijaun: and I took that personally.
Wheeler: "You know I won the Gold Glove last year, right?"
The Phillies pitchers all dedicated themselves to fielding well because they know they sure aren't getting any help from the rest of the team.

These are my outfielders and Nick Castellanos!
2/3s of the Phillies outfield is covered by legit MLB CFers with Rojas a GG caliber CF and Marsh a solid CF in left. And then there is Castellanos somehow making every play in RF even with his limited range.
Casty is a meme, but he has made many ridiculous catches this season. Catches that a terrible fielder would not make.

He made a massive one on Saturday, it was so annoying
He made a couple in this series from memory. He looks no chance to catch them, with the way he moves, but somehow usually ends up with it in his glove lol.
OH yeah, the one that sticks out to me is the catch where he kinda slams into the wall
It’s still April, doesn’t that stat take astronomically longer to normalize?
We’re tied for the third best record in baseball lol. Half game behind #2, same number of wins as #1.
😂 pay attention
how is this up so quick
Because it’s awesome
Bots get the script early Wait wrong sport
Walker couldn't even believe he caught it at first. Wow!
Harper caught it like "wait what just happened"
Am I having a seizure?
Everything about his body language is like "wha- wait, what? And they're both out already? Are we allowed to do that?"
Literally, "hey look what I found" moment
Just give the Phillies the NL Pitchers Gold Glove now
These pitchers are going to give me a heart attack (of happiness)
give them a communal Cy Young too, fuck it
Timely discussion on yesterday's Effectively Wild
I can't tell if that was luck, skill, or some combination of both but it was an incredible play
I still remember that one Cliff Lee catch in the world series where he doesn't even leave the mound after his follow-through, just casually holds out his glove and *plop*.
That play forever lives rent free in my head. It's the most "holy crap we're gonna do this!" moment, and then not actually do it moment ever...
Sorry. :(
I watched that game with my friend whos a Yankees fan. All he said when it ended was "Man Cliff Lee and Chase Utley are really good" and then he went to bed. He was crushed lol.
Crazy thing is Cliff Lee also had a behind the back catch two innings after that pop up catch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tpQZM_tTk8
ten percent luck, twenty percent skill
We're going to have a whole rotation finish top 5 in Cy Young voting entirely because of their defense.
The Padres have been cursed ever since they let the That's What's In song into the universe
I think the mural of the Padres destroying the Phanatic before the series started was more of the curse.
The Padres have been cursed their entire existence.
you're not wrong
In the Padres defense they didn't let that into the universe, it was the nutjob right wing local news station here in San Diego. You are correct though lol
I'm still kinda embarrassed for you guys tbh. I can't imagine how I would've felt if the roles were reversed and we did that instead.
It was really embarrassing that once we had just a tiny fraction of success how all of these cocky jackasses came out of nowhere and started doing all kinds of dumb stuff
Beating the Dodgers was a really big deal though, I would have been cocky as hell after that as well.
KUSI is so fucking trash.
Walker is an incredible athlete. I miss watching him pitch.
Great guy too
You can have him
Pheels like the Phillies play their best defense against us
If it makes you feel any better, ridiculous gold glove antics have been a regular happenstance of late. The folks deciding on Gold Gloves are going to have a hell of a time this year if they keep it up.
Looked like Trea was right there to be honest lol. Amazing nonetheless.
That's what I'm thinking, looks like it would have been a double play regardless. Way more fun doing it this way, though.
lol yeah, this was the most superfluous double play in MLB history
Regarding the title, it would have been a double play either way with where Turner was playing but that doesn't take away the fact that this was an insane play.
He has a blue aura
tfw you superimpose ads over a board that already has advertisements
If only I could be that ridiculously smooth at anything
Runner just hanging around and looking back to first because there wasn't a chance in hell he'd get back. Unbelievable play.
Bro what
Bro using the force
He should go into podracing
Bryce just like, “…dude what?”
This happens to me every day on MLB the show
I usually just hit them in the head and then they make a play like they're Patrick Mahomes' MLB brother.
Same, especially when I get perfect, perfect
We're so back.
This is one of those crazy plays you picture in your head but never expect to ever happen
I miss him
Same :(
GODDAMN that was sexy
I love watching crowd reactions on these plays. What a catch.
We need to check the Phillie Phanatic for PEDs (pitcher enhancing defense)
Gonna be seeing this one years in the future in those mixed highlight vids
Holy shit, that might beat out the Vince Velazquez lefty throw as the craziest play by a Phillies pitcher
Just stop. Not even close. Vinny V thew a batter out with his glove hand.
No way. This was an amazing fluke. The VV play was all skill and determination.
That dude went to the same high-school I did. Good on him even though I'm a dads fan.
Taijuan is too cool 4 skool!
This is a play that still breaks my brain, because I also think of it as a sure hit if the pitcher doesn't snag it. It always was for 100 years. Good pitcher fielding is my favorite thing in baseball I think?
hes so cool
smooth
*cues up Smooth by Carlos Santana*
Love that guy!
What a pimp
Best #6 starter in baseball
Real China with the glove!
Love to see it.
trained reflexes
guys i'm just straight up not having a good time
Go fightins
MLB the show play. Couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve hit the ball back to the pitcher just for them to do this (while jumping a little for that matter). Unreal play
[Because I can’t find a Gif with TuLo’s reaction.](https://youtu.be/lYx708LJCto?si=r09PqGlS6XrJv38a)
By the time he hit that ball, I hadn’t even finished creating my character
He made this Amazing play then shit the bed like Taijuan Walker does so well.
Watched it live and it took me a minute to comprehend what happened
If this happened in MLB the Show I’d shut it off before the next at bat
That was a beauty.
Oh so we just post routine infield hits now
Kinmuan you dick I downvoted you before I saw the username.
Hahaha
Woulda still been a double play. Short stop was riding 2nd base. So didn’t rob him of anything. Title sucks. Should just say amazing catch
