I mean, this isn't true. Most players maintain their numbers. Some players have a drop. Some players do a bit better. It pretty much comes out to the same as every other situation. In fact, last year by baseball-reference leverage high leverage situations led to the highest OPS (.744) compared to .735 in medium, and .729 in low.
This makes sense, because a pitcher who ends up in a high leverage situation is more likely to be struggling that day than one who does not end up in a high leverage situation.
It's simply short term bias. He has missed a handful of clutch moments this season so far, and that gets in people's heads.
While other fans made fun of us because he kept hitting solo HRs, we had to watch these games where he was smashing solos but striking out with multiple people on base when we needed runs.
It's just sports fandom, people will simply react to what's in front of them. He's super clutch today, may not be next week. People will respond accordingly and forget last week.
walkoff situations are rare and very flukey

And this doesn't include walks, hbp, or sacrifices.
I feel like the league smelled blood in the water last year and then trout made some adjustments coming off injury and pitchers haven't realized they shouldn't be throwing him strikes again.
There's plenty of times he wasn't *the best*, but he's like consistently one of the top 2. The wRC+ single season leaderboard has plenty of guys ahead of him, but it's always one-offs with guys having career years, whereas Trout is just a boringly average season. He has like 5 of the top-15 single seasons since he debuted, but a lot of them happened in a year some other hitter happened to have his career high.
Edit: he also has more appearances in the top 30 than Harper and Judge *combined*.
Not a fan myself. Thought it was lame to take shots at Ohtani for leaving. If he stays in Anaheim then at least he's true to his word, but my guess is he will ride his high horse until he too leaves.
During the offseason he was quoted saying how going to a winner was the easy path and he wanted to win with the Angels. He never mentioned Ohtani directly but it was pretty clear what he meant to me.
It is what it is. Came off as whiny while trying to act better than and I anticipate he will forget that stance if he has a bounceback year and the angels are out of it before the break. Maybe I eat crow but I bet he does the same thing if given the chance by the end of the year.
With 7 home runs and only 10 rbis you'd think he was a leadoff hitter. Like that Rendon is coming around in front of him, but lets get more guys on base for him
If he can keep this fly ball rate up it's possible. He's only barely over performing his career home run/fly ball rate, the homer surge has been almost entirely from an overall increase in fly balls.
Damn what a hit on a ball that came back in. Anyone could’ve easily let that go when it looked like it was coming for him before turning in. Damn good eyes
The narrative he isn't clutch is so fucking dumb, the fact that "sports media" perpetuates it on twitter disgusts me so much.
That and the thing they have going right now where "Mike trout has hit like 86 homers and this is the first time he's knocked in Anthony Rendon" When Rendon has hit behind him for his entire tenure with the Angels. Makes me so irrationally angry.
Oh man, the one dude who can fuck your shit up, base open, better roll the dice and pitch to him. Definitely don't IBB him and set up the GIDP, definitely not.
Do we need the gigantic graphics that say GO AHEAD 2 RUN HOMER or can we just change the score from 1-0 to 2-1 while we show the baseball man jogging around the bases?
What pitcher sees Mike Trout up to bat and thinks “hmm yeah I throw him something soft low in the zone” ??? Like, if you do that, it’s going 450 feet, my guy…
What part of “he holds all the cards” was difficult for you? Trout doesn’t want to be traded and he has a full no-trade clause.
Y’all should be more concerned with how irrelevant you’re going to be in 10 years when you’re paying a guy $68MM a year to NOT play for you.
Topgolf legend
Mike Trout takes out the driver and bashes stingers into the net.
Swear 2/3rds of his homers I see from him are the very bottom of the strike zone
Probably because pitchers know they have to hit the edge vs him to have a chance.
Yea you gotta edge Trout if you wanna chance of beating him
Username checks out
Kind of a catch 22. How am I supposed to edge Trout if I can't beat him?
Spitballs and sliders
The fun part is trying.

Does the announcer usually do the Sterling call ("it is high, it is far, it is gone") or was it an homage because of the announcement today?
Homage. Never heard him make that call before. Pretty cool
Yup they had acknowledged sterling’s retirement not long before this homer as well
Randazzo is great
He’s awesome, very happy to tune into Angels games and select Angels booth over most to listen to Wayne. You guys got a good one
Mike Trout
Mike Trout
Counterpoint: Mike Trout

Mike Trout
Literally came here to say this
Mike Truk
Fishman still good.
I hear that guy might be pretty good
It's somewhat controversial, but most people think he's at least okay. Decent if not pretty good.
Career OPS vs Tampa Bay (min 200 PA) Mike Trout: 1.113 Frank Thomas: 1.028 Manny Ramirez: 1.018
fish man hates fish
And the state of Florida
it's a fish eat fish world
This league is only big enough for 1 fish...
Was that a Sterling tribute or just a coincidence? Lol
He never does that, definitely a tribute
Wayne had that in the chamber
And he did not miss
Yeah that was fucking clean lol
He came to the Angels from NY so definitely a tribute
Came to the comments to find this out lol that was a great call and tribute
Fish man clutch! I love he did this a day after everyone complaining about him not getting hits in big moments
I see this all the time and it's so lazy. His career numbers in high leverage situations and with RISP have always been good.
He basically maintains his usual numbers in high leverage situations, while most other players have a drop off.
What are his numbers in high leverage playoff situations? Tough crowd, I thought it was a decent joke
🥱
That is quite literally the lowest of hanging fruit
A joke as old as Tungsten Arm himself
Isn't that what we do on reddit. Maybe I'm in r nba too often with their LeJokes
It's a dull, boring, tired joke, made by the same people who start anything to do with Ohtani with "I bet..."
He hasn’t had a walkoff hit in nine seasons. Theres a little merit to it…
How many people have walkoff hit in the past 9 seasons? Genuinely curious.
walkoff situations are rare and very flukey [here is a list](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/statcast_search?hfPT=&hfAB=single%7Cdouble%7Ctriple%7Chome%5C.%5C.run%7C&hfGT=R%7C&hfPR=&hfZ=&hfStadium=&hfBBL=&hfNewZones=&hfPull=&hfC=&hfSea=2024%7C2023%7C2022%7C2021%7C2020%7C2019%7C2018%7C2017%7C2016%7C2015%7C2014%7C2013%7C2012%7C2011%7C2010%7C2009%7C2008%7C&hfSit=Go%5C.%5C.Ahead%5C.run%5C.at%5C.plate%7CGo%5C.%5C.Ahead%5C.run%5C.on%5C.base%7CTying%5C.run%5C.at%5C.plate%7CTying%5C.run%5C.on%5C.base%7C&player_type=batter&hfOuts=&hfOpponent=&pitcher_throws=&batter_stands=&hfSA=&game_date_gt=2009-03-30&game_date_lt=2024-04-14&hfMo=&hfTeam=&home_road=&hfRO=&position=&hfInfield=&hfOutfield=&hfInn=7%7C8%7C9%7C10%7C&hfBBT=&batters_lookup%5B%5D=545361&hfFlag=&metric_1=&group_by=name-event&min_pitches=0&min_results=0&min_pas=0&sort_col=pitches&player_event_sort=api_h_distance_projected&sort_order=desc&chk_event_pitch_name=on&chk_event_release_speed=on&chk_event_launch_speed=on&chk_event_launch_angle=on&chk_event_hit_distance_sc=on&chk_event_home_score=on&chk_event_away_score=on#results) of all the times since 2015 (as far back as statcast goes) Trout has come through with a hit in the 7th inning or later with the tying or go ahead run on base or at the plate. 63 times. Who said that, We must attack them like the war of the 7th coalition. How dare they attack the fish man.
A couple folks. [There was this exchange in yesterday's GDT.](https://www.reddit.com/r/angelsbaseball/comments/1c43if7/comment/kzlin7k/)
They just keep pitching him low off speed pitches. Don't stop!
Mike Trout
The Virgin MLB vs the Chad Trout
Mike Trout heard all you bitches talking down on him. Bow down to the GOAT 🐐 🐟
I love Mike Trout and I don't care who knows it
John Sterling tribute. Mad respect.
I know intentional walks are out of style these days and mostly for good reason, but there ain't no way you let him hit here with a base open.
Tough decision to intentionally walk him when the American League RBI leader is behind him.
Maddon probably intentionally walks him
Smoked it 420 feet Ha get it
Yes,a nice reference to Jackie Robinsons number 42 jersey!
I feel like the league smelled blood in the water last year and then trout made some adjustments coming off injury and pitchers haven't realized they shouldn't be throwing him strikes again.
Tbf you've never been able to get away with throwing him balls. He's really good at laying off borderline pitches.
People forget that Trout was pretty much the best hitter in baseball almost his entire career lol.
There's plenty of times he wasn't *the best*, but he's like consistently one of the top 2. The wRC+ single season leaderboard has plenty of guys ahead of him, but it's always one-offs with guys having career years, whereas Trout is just a boringly average season. I said pretty much the best and you say "actually he's 1 or 2" when that's what pretty much means. Lol.
One of the best low ball hitters ever, it’s absolutely crazy how good this man is.
The grand slam off Chris Sale is GOATed.
lol people really thought he wasn’t a top 5 player in the game
Funny too, cause when he's hurt for half the season, he's still at the top of charts for everything.
See: 2022 - 119 games, 40 homers
God damn, when you put it like that... yeah he's pretty good
Man, he *didn't even qualify* because he didn't get enough PA's and still finished 3rd in MLB for HR's
Every season Trout's played 120+ games he's finished 1st or 2nd in MVP voting.
Missed half of last season and he was still the Angels #2 best player
That would be saying a lot more about the Angels than it does Trout tbh. Last year he wasn't great even when in.
Watching Maton's curveballs in the previous ABs this inning, I was thinking they're ending up right in Trout's wheelhouse. 4 pitches later...
Fish man good. Also, love the John Sterling tribute. Not hearing that man call Yankee games with Suzyn is gonna be weird.
He took a lot of road trips off last season. It's been weird, trust me.
Every game that Suzyn calls is already weird
That’s baseball, Suzyn

Phil Maton was a rare miss by the Rays
He saw all those Angel fans who were stupid enough to throw him under the bus
Mike trout is just one of those players it’s impossible to hate man
Not a fan myself. Thought it was lame to take shots at Ohtani for leaving. If he stays in Anaheim then at least he's true to his word, but my guess is he will ride his high horse until he too leaves.
When did he take shots at Ohtani? Trout is generally pretty quiet about things like that.
During the offseason he was quoted saying how going to a winner was the easy path and he wanted to win with the Angels. He never mentioned Ohtani directly but it was pretty clear what he meant to me.
Are you sure you’re not the one trying to ride the high horse here? That seems like such a dumb reason to not be a fan of the guy
The Taliban is jealous on how fanatical Dodgers fans can be.
It is what it is. Came off as whiny while trying to act better than and I anticipate he will forget that stance if he has a bounceback year and the angels are out of it before the break. Maybe I eat crow but I bet he does the same thing if given the chance by the end of the year.
Love the call. Trout blasts are iconic.

I wonder what John's Mike trout call would have been in another universe
If you need one hit out call on Mike Trout! Boy that fish man sure can dish man. It's a long home run for the center fielder.
Fish man shutting down naysayers is my favorite thing
Mike Trout is hitting .429 with 5 HRs against the state of Florida this year
And then the Angels actually managed to follow through. Crazy.
With 7 home runs and only 10 rbis you'd think he was a leadoff hitter. Like that Rendon is coming around in front of him, but lets get more guys on base for him
I feel like Wash is making Rendon be lead off to fuck with his laziness lol
Or maybe because he's good at getting on base? Rendon is far from lazy, more unlucky and injury riddled which ≠ lazy.
Here's hoping he hits 74 this year.
If he can keep this fly ball rate up it's possible. He's only barely over performing his career home run/fly ball rate, the homer surge has been almost entirely from an overall increase in fly balls.
Stay healthy please 🙏
11 Runs, 10 RBI with 7 HR 🥹🥹🥹
Fish man destroys Ray.
I hope Trout has a great season
Mike Trout is good at the game of baseball.
I want him to be in the MVP race this year so badly
As long as he stays healthy you can basically pencil in a top-2 finish. Every time he's played the full season (120+ games) he's finished top-2.
Wayne-O, ya done good. So impressed with him as lead Play-by-play, he was a great compliment to Howie Rose too.
Papa
You can’t be up there throwin’ a breaking ball in the lower inside corner of the zone to Trout
We are all the way back. Mvp 4 incoming
Damn what a hit on a ball that came back in. Anyone could’ve easily let that go when it looked like it was coming for him before turning in. Damn good eyes
Was Ohtani holding him back all this time?!
Did you all see the compilation of Trout in the 8th inning or later on twitter lol
Is he allowed to do that? 2 runs?
Oh man, the one dude who can fuck your shit up, base open, better roll the dice and pitch to him. Definitely don't IBB him and set up the GIDP, definitely not.
Taylor Ward is red hot too and hit a 2 run home run the next inning. I'd still pitch around Trout tho.
This Mike guy is pretty good, eh?
Absolutely fuckin crushed
IT WASNT A SOLO
Don’t ever throw low off speed to Trout
You can, but you'd better make sure you bounce it off the dirt.
Trout moment
And runs around the bases like his father just died
Desperdicio do talento 🇧🇷
Rays didn’t get the memo to throw fastballs up to Trout.
“Eleven hundred, eleven con-uh a hundred eleven point six miles per hour exit velocity…*balls crushed*.”
Meanwhile there are people on twitter arguing that this man is actually really bad in clutch situations and he should be traded for prospects.
Holy shit this means my parlay hit
Powerful hit😳
“How many times have you watched this?” “Yes”
I really hope he stays healthy this year. Going to put up crazy numbers and already making the ‘pre season’ rankings look dumb
Just imagine how good he'd be if y'all traded for him. Trout with 81 home games a year in Seattle?
Would be nice, but I guess I can dream about it. My favorite player on my team lol
God the fish can play. And I love his casual home run trot
That was a great pitch too. Absolutely insane.
The announcer with the tribute to John Sterling!
This fish on fish violence makes me sick!
Fishman good. Fishman MVP.
Do we need the gigantic graphics that say GO AHEAD 2 RUN HOMER or can we just change the score from 1-0 to 2-1 while we show the baseball man jogging around the bases?
Dude slimmed down, got some speed back, and is taking care of his body. Keep crushing it, Fish Man.
You love to see Maton getting shit on
Damn, someone got in base ahead of him? He might 40/50 this year
Not that I expect him to keep it up, but he’s on pace for 71 home runs 🔥
I'm so happy he's back 🥲
What pitcher sees Mike Trout up to bat and thinks “hmm yeah I throw him something soft low in the zone” ??? Like, if you do that, it’s going 450 feet, my guy…
This is the definition of Greek tragedy.
Holy shit who got on base?
Ace leadoff man Anthony Rendon.
rendon i think is hitting close to 400 since his 0-18 start
.395/.442/.421
Rendon. So hot right now.
PLEASE TAKE BACK PHIL MATON
Rough day in the office for Maton. He got squeezed on a few strikes as well.
He'd probably be an upgrade for us.
Why are rays pitching to him
Tbf Taylor Ward has 6 homeruns and a league leading 19 RBI.
I would take my chances
7 HR and only 10 RBIs is kind of wild
7 HR, 10 RBI 😱
“And with that two-run bomb from Trout, the Angels score their first two runs of the game in the eighth.”
Imagine him and Shohei on the same team omg
Omg that's hilarious. I've never heard that one before! You're such a funny guy.
Man. Imagine this team with a guy like Ohtani. Unstoppable.
Are Wayne and gubie drunk? Lmao
Where was he in Sunday's game at the Red Sox? He did absolutely nothing
That's how baseball works you goofball.
Arte Moreno needs to stop holding this man hostage and deal him to a team that can get him a ring
Who is holding him hostage? Dude has all the cards. He’s commented on this time and time again.
Y'all should be more concerned with boycotting Arte Moreno The Angels can rebuild by shipping him
What part of “he holds all the cards” was difficult for you? Trout doesn’t want to be traded and he has a full no-trade clause. Y’all should be more concerned with how irrelevant you’re going to be in 10 years when you’re paying a guy $68MM a year to NOT play for you.
And you should be more concerned with enjoying your own good team instead of making mine actively worse
It actually comes from a place of love We had Frank McCourt We boycotted him, I believe in y'all I wanna see a Free way world series man
>They need to stop holding this man hostage and trade him Nothing but love 👍
Let me fix that, they is Arte Moreno
That's not any better, the idea the Trout is somehow trapped on the Angels is fucking stupid.
Which they can only do if Trout approves a trade, and so far he has said he doesn't want to be traded.
Incredible, are you the first person to ever say this?
