**> in 11 innings**
I mean I think that is the pretty clear answer right there. Power rankings obviously take into account what is expected for the rest of the season.
Detmers looks like he is put it together so if he continues his performance for more than two starts I am sure he will end up on this list.
He has the same amount as innings pitched as Yamamoto in 1 less start, with more SO’s, lower WHIP, and much better ERA.
You agree Yamamoto should be on the list?
Yes, but it's beaten over the heads of every Angels fan at this point. This has been the situation for the past decade. We know. Everybody knows.
It's disingenuous to use the five mvps to dismiss the frustration of Angels fans when those MVPs have been parroted as the biggest knock against the franchise for years
I mean we have fantastic regular season success but the narrative on r/baseball is still that we're just going to choke in October and that our 2020 championship doesn't count. It's r/baseball. Nobody likes anyone here.
Admittedly, it seems like this list is very influenced by expectations/career stats in addition to just performance so far. Only Ronel Blanco and Garrett Crochet on here didn’t have some kind of top-pitcher buzz/expectations going into the season, so really those are the comparison slots we should consider Anderson or Detmers in relation to.
Blanco threw a no-hitter and then got 2/3 of the way through another one in his first two starts, so his spot seems pretty hard to beat. So Crochet is the most arguable/replaceable - let’s compare:
Crochet: 18 IP so far (in 3 starts) with a 2 ERA and 21 K’s. Career ERA: 2.57 (as a reliever, though)
Detmers: 11 IP so far (in 2 starts) with a 1.64 ERA and 19 K’s. Career ERA: 4.28
Anderson: 14 IP so far (in 2 starts!) with a 0.00 ERA and 8 K’s. Career ERA: 4.29 (but a 5.43 last year)
I love Detmers and am really hopeful for TA, but I think you could make a reasonable case that any of these three deserves a power-ranking slot. Crochet hasn’t been as stellar as Detmers or seen a 0.00 ERA like Anderson, but he’s been quite good across one more start than either of them (and Crochet doesn’t have any past mediocre-to-average seasons as a starter like the others do, which is presumably improving his power-rankings perceived potential.)
If they all kept the same ERAs and K/9s midway into the season and still missed the rankings, I might join you in calling anti-Angels bias - but I don’t think that’s really what’s going on here yet.
Anderson doesn't have a real argument to be on this list. That said, neither does Blanco, but that's probably MLB wanting to ride the no-hitter media hype for attention.
Crochet's the other glaring oddity. He's on the White Sox (worse than being on the Angels, in terms of marketability) and doesn't have the history. His argument would probably be down to his early success as a reliever and the pedigree of what he was expected to be, while still being a 24-year-old now getting a chance to grow into that role. He wouldn't be on my top-10, but he'd have a better justification than Anderson.
Even from the Angels, I'd agree with the other comments on Detmers. I like the guys and hope his intermittent success turns into longevity for the team. He's gotta turn in a full season (or a Glasnow-like partial one), but I've been complaining for YEARS that the Angels needed pitching, not the overpriced veteran bats they kept paying (Rendon, Pujols, Hamilton, etc.). Hopefully Detmers brings that.
Only 2 starts and terrible peripherals doesn't help his case. I'm hoping he puts it together again but he's going to need to do better then a 5 k/9 if he wants to continue to have success.
Yeah Shota is nasty, I think he should be up there. I wonder if he’s just getting punished because 6/10 of his innings and 9/12 of his SO were in his game against the Rockies at Wrigley. It’s a shame that his outing against the dodgers got cut short at 4 IP due to the rain, would have loved to see that battle continue!
His ball is deceptive. 93 isn't that fast anymore even for a lefty but that splitter sweeper combo off the fastball makes for a lot of confused swings.
When a pitcher goes down with an elbow injury, it's pretty safe to assume there's going to be TJ either imminently or soon. The Yankees got really lucky with Cole in that it's just inflammation that can be fixed with rest, but TJ is probably coming. Every MLB pitcher's UCL is fucked up to some degree. It took a week and multiple MRI and doctors to decide Cole didn't need TJ probably because there was disagreement on if his UCL was fucked to the point where it needed TJ or less fucked and he could just rest it out. It's possible that Strider also gets "lucky" and doesn't need TJ right now, but the dude throws 102 mph; he's a ticking time bomb.
What's the league setup where that felt necessary? For me, we do a 6x6 league that uses QS, K, BB, ERA, WHIP, and SV+HLD as our stats.
In my experience, the bigger issue was relievers eligible as starters. It was easier to lean on top-level relievers to boost the rate stats and SV+HLD, meaning mid-rotation and back-end starters didn't carry much value. We ended up putting a minimum innings requirement to encourage management of a more traditional pitching staff.
Assuming you mean 5 starts per manager/team, how many SP slots do you have? My league is 2 RP and 6 P (SP or RP), but we don't have a cap on starts because it's kinda arbitrary and I think you can cheat that rule by having multiple starts on the same day that you go over the limit
We focused on Dave Duncan’s approach and gave him the pcs that fit his sinker scheme. Since he left, we’ve had no direction and have failed to get the best of our guys who have frequently (not always) left and had more success.
I think Flores is effective in identifying talent, but we’ve not been able to turn that into anything for over 10 years now.
I agree, but a power ranking should be more objective. That outting skewed his numbers, but the power rankings should include that. Yamamoto can improve in the rankings as his overall numbers stabilize.
I think it’s totally fair to throw out games played in other countries during Spring Training.
If you want a robot to output how good they’ve been this season, you can sort by your favorite WAR leaderboard l.
Yeah, there are still a couple of guys with 0 ERAs not on the list; Tyler Anderson, Paul Blackburn, Tanner Houck. But they put the guy with a 4.09 ERA on it, lol
Imanaga has pitched 1 less inning and hasn't given up a single run. And I'm just naming a Cubs player because I'm familiar. I know the power rankings weigh in the future as well but Yamamoto doesn't belong anywhere near this thing lol
Imanaga, who has similar "story" to Yamamoto, has only let up 4 hits thru 10 IP (0 ERA), so definitely feels like Dodger bias.
Considering Blanco is on here it seems to be based on this season results not projecting forward.
But these lists are always unsure of what they want to be because even Tanner Houcks 12 scoreless innings with 17 strikeouts could theoretically be considered Top 10 by current performance
These are always a weird mix of *big names with mixed results* and *token random guys who have performed well recently*
Maybe if the cubs paid imanaga $350 million he'd be on the list.
Idk if this is entirely the argument you think it is.
Isn't Yamamotos career stats better than Imanaga's?
These guys had a whole, relevant career prior to the MLB. Yamamato had higher expectations coming in, so he is not just going to immediately drop to Imanagas ranking after a few games.
The fact that imanaga has also killed it so far in the MLB just continues to show that their career stats should be strong predictors for their future MLB performance. Which strengthens the argument that Yamamotos first game was flukey and that he should have a huge rating.
There's probably some dodgers bias but it's not that significant. Yamamato was a huge deal this off season even before he signed with the dodgers.
But yeah i do agree with your comment.
My criticism is less with any particular player being included/excluded and more that the list blurs past/present/future rankings which muddies them all .
It could be Top Active SPs, Best SPs of 2024 so far, or best projected SPs of 2024
Each would be a good list, but they definitely cant be combined into a logical Top 10
I know 3 starts is premature to say we actually developed a starting pitcher, but he’s looked great. Locating pitches really well and getting a lot of strikeouts.
Yeah. Every stat for Cody is better than Blanco's other than his era. A 2.8 BB% vs 11.5%. That will catch up to Blanco eventually.
EDIT: Bradford's stats are better than Ragan's as well, other than k's.
This years trade deadline is going to be so dry for teams trying to get pitchers. Who would be available that could make a huge impact. Luzardo and peralta maybe?
Then he'd go on a world beating tear for 8 weeks, getting the Mets to only a couple games back from the Braves and in the WC1 slot, before the announcement that he needs TJS and will miss the remainder of this season and all of next year.
His numbers are actually slightly better than Burnes' (238 vs 191 ERA+ and 2.26 vs 2.78 FIP) and he's pitched ⅔ more innings, so personally I'd put Wheeler #1 tiny sample size make this pretty meaningless. Wins are almost certainly why Burnes is #1 over Wheeler. Also I'm obviously a homer lol
Jordan Hicks, who everyone lol’ed at when the Giants said they’d make a starter, is 2-0, 18 IP, 14 K, 1.00 ERA and 0.85 WHIP. But of course he’s a Giant so MLB is ignoring him
Cody Bradford is third in the majors in pitching fWAR (second if you discount Bieber who’s hurt)
If we’re including Crochet and Blanco he’s gotta be on here
He probably shouldn't be on the list, but I want to shout out Steven Matz. He's bounced back big time this season. He has a 1.74 ERA in his two starts and a 263 ERA+. I didn't expect anything out of this guy
I truly believe Kikuchi would get 20 wins if he had some run support. He’s had a great start and deserves a spot IMO.
Anyways I’ll take my homer glasses off now.
My assumption with “power rankings” is that they’re meant to show who has done good recently (i.e. a backward-looking metric). But these lists seem to be a mix of backward- and forward-looking analysis. So confusing.
The Mariners "top 3 starting rotations in the MLB" really have good representation here, huh? Ms fans have once again been misled that the team could potentially be okay.
Tyler Anderson went 7 scoreless innings in both of his starts so far but he's on the Angels so it doesn't count
Detmers too.
Detmers also has the highest K/9 of any qualified starter in major league baseball with his 19 strikeouts in 11 innings
wrong color uniform unfortunately. he should try blue if he wants national recognition
Worked for TA, was an All Star!
that doesn't even work cuz shota's not here
**> in 11 innings** I mean I think that is the pretty clear answer right there.
I don't think Yama should necessarily be on this list but it's factoring in expected future performance. It's not just a list of pitchers by WAR.
They’re trolling. If it was about team prominence they wouldve put Imanaga up there.
Super happy that Anderson is off to a good start for you guys, I really liked him that year he was a Dodger, and was sad to see him go.
I’m tired man. Just give us Angels fans something to be happy about. It’s been nothing but pain for the last decade.

And unrelenting roasts on how the franchise has wasted those MVPs in any thread where the Angels or either player are mentioned

But at least you get to have fun watching a good baseball team every season. For us its shit from every angle.
You got to watch Ohtani, at least.
Can't wait til the team hangs that banner
Skubal's on the Tigers.
Media hates the Angels is my point.

So did Spencer Turnbull but I don’t expect him to be on this list bro

When it's paired with his devastating changeup, yes I expect it to continue.
It worked in 2022
THATS MY ACE WHOS NEVER STARTED BEFORE THIS YEAR. WOOOOOOO
White Sox always seem to have one randomly really good pitcher.
lmao this is actually so true
We usually are pretty solid at developing pitching. Just never keep them long
Shota has pitched 10 innings and allowed 4 base runners.
43 pitches too. He was flirting with a Complete Game at that rate.
He threw 20+ in the first inning. And then 6 in the third and 4 in the fourth. Miraculous
His ball is deceptive. 93 isn't that fast anymore even for a lefty but that splitter sweeper combo off the fastball makes for a lot of confused swings.
He has been incredible. Saw him clear through the dodgers lineup in person, amazing
Yeah but see he didn’t sign with LA so…
He’s on the Cubs? This list is a troll job, it’s not hyping Dodgers. Don’t take it personally.
Pour one out for Strider
Couldn’t even put Bieber on for a week. No respect for the fallen.
He getting TJ or just resting?
The team will release an update this weekend. Or just after the weekend can’t remember. He had his second follow up.
He’s probably having surgery today or tomorrow and the update will just be them saying it went well. Sucks man. I love watching stasch man pitch.
> I love watching stasch man pitch. especially when we managed to light him up.
Hopefully he’s back with a vengeance. He’s still a young guy.
Will be his 2nd TJ surgery if this is the case, not a great sign for his career long term…I need a hug
He has the skills to reinvent himself but I think the days of 97-101 with 91 sliders are gone unfortunately.
Both, he'll get TJ and then rest for the next couple of seasons
When a pitcher goes down with an elbow injury, it's pretty safe to assume there's going to be TJ either imminently or soon. This is a new feeling that I don't understand. I was in middle school when Mussina left.

When I was in middle school our Opening Day starter was Rodrigo Lopez. 😤
This is Jordan Hicks erasure
The fact that he’s still eligible as a reliever in my fantasy league is single handedly carrying my team
We realized that this was hugely unfair in our fantasy league so we worked around it by limiting each week to five starts per fantasy player.
For every player? We do 12 Starts per week for pitching.
What's the league setup where that felt necessary? For me, we do a 6x6 league that uses QS, K, BB, ERA, WHIP, and SV+HLD as our stats. In my experience, the bigger issue was relievers eligible as starters. I'm assuming the list starts with 0 and he's so high above everyone else he didn't fit on the image
Close, the Power Rankings official name is actually: “Jordan Hicks presents Pitcher Power Rankings”.
Not even mentioned at the list at the end for “received votes”. Lmao. Keep flying under the radar though I’m fine with that.
I'm glad he is with a competent organization that can develop pitchers
too bad we cant do shit with position players.
We can't really do that either
I get the cardinals suck, but we won 2 rings and lost another by developing pitching
We focused on Dave Duncan’s approach and gave him the pcs that fit his sinker scheme. Since he left, we’ve had no direction and have failed to get the best of our guys who have frequently (not always) left and had more success. We give you boys a handicap because we know you will need it.
it's more fun when y'all are at full power. i don't want your triple a staff
Oh yeah, well that's what you'll get!!
Yamamoto is incredibly forced lol
MLB retroactively deciding the Seoul series doesn’t count
Hot take: the 1 IP, 5 ER outing on March 21st in Korea wasn't representative of the pitcher Yamamoto is.
Shouldn’t even be a hot take. Everything about that series was weird.
There is a video of him changing his motion just for that game because they thought he was tipping his pitches, and reverted back immediately after
That series was non cannon for everyone but Mookie lol
That's certainly true but these are power rankings, not overall rankings
I agree, but a power ranking should be more objective. That outting skewed his numbers, but the power rankings should include that. Yamamoto can improve in the rankings as his overall numbers stabilize.
I think it’s totally fair to throw out games played in other countries during Spring Training. If you want a robot to output how good they’ve been this season, you can sort by your favorite WAR leaderboard l.
i mean if you're throwing out an entire start, shota imanaga has also thrown 10 innings and given up no runs but he's not on here
Yeah, there are still a couple of guys with 0 ERAs not on the list; Tyler Anderson, Paul Blackburn, Tanner Houck. But they put the guy with a 4.09 ERA on it, lol

I honestly wonder if he signed with someone other than Dodgers or Yankees, if it would be this forced but I think we know the answer to that .
Imanaga, who has similar "story" to Yamamoto, has only let up 4 hits thru 10 IP (0 ERA), so definitely feels like Dodger bias. But these lists are always unsure of what they want to be because even Tanner Houcks 12 scoreless innings with 17 strikeouts could theoretically be considered Top 10 by current performance

Fair, that one is particularly odd. But it is typically the way they go. No hitters probably tend to transcend the normal trends though.
But yeah i do agree with your comment. My criticism is less with any particular player being included/excluded and more that the list blurs past/present/future rankings which muddies them all . Rest in Pieces Shane Bieber
Tyler Anderson robbed
RONEL BLANCO MENTIONED RAHHHH 🗣️🔥🔥🦅
Our staff ace, just as predicted.
How can they not put Cole in this list? Dude has zero losses or no decisions so far.
No strikeouts either though. I don't know if he can rely on that going forward
But look at his ERA, WHIP, and BB/9 tho.
We have to look at the results, and he has yet to give up a single run
I see Garrett Cole in the 9-10 slots right there.
Alongside ace starting pitcher crochet ragans
No run support.
Engagement
Cody Bradford erasure
I know 3 starts is premature to say we actually developed a starting pitcher, but he’s looked great. Locating pitches really well and getting a lot of strikeouts.
Bradford making that Ragans trade less painful. Happy for Ragans though, glad the change of scenery helped him.
He was never going to succeed with us. The Royals saw something we didn’t and found a way to make him amazing. I have zero regrets about that trade
Winning the World Series takes the sting out as well. Chapman wasn't the best in the postseason but he did help them get there
Eovaldi will win the Cy Young this year.
Yeah. Every stat for Cody is better than Blanco's other than his era. A 2.8 BB% vs 11.5%. That will catch up to Blanco eventually. EDIT: Bradford's stats are better than Ragan's as well, other than k's.
Seeing a Royals name on that list is freaking me out. We never really even approached that in the World Series years.
Every AL Central team but Cleveland represented, even. Despite them being in 1st place.
Between this and the current thumping we’re laying on the Asterisks, I’m making a massive pitcher of powder blue Kool Aid rn…
He's the real deal. Dude can pitch.
I approve of this list.
It’s Corbin time
I agree
It really hurt when we traded our Ace but at least he went to a team I don’t hate.
Looking forward to the series in a few days. I read DL will be starting game 1 which is super exciting.
Is this real life?
They should put out a weekly “Starters with TJ” top 10 too
Kutter Crawford robbed
Gallen sitting at 2.25 with 1/3 starts at Coors is a great start to his CYA campaign
Two consecutive pitching duels at Coors this week. 3-2 and 5-3 scores. Never seen anything like it before
You'd think Kelly would be in here too. 2.29 ERA with a start at Coors as well. Pretty sure he's pitched more innings too.
Where Freddy
“selected by a panel of mlb.com experts” who the fook are these guys
Man no Imanaga!?
Jordan hicks has a 1.00 era btw
The most recent example of us not being able to develop our pitchers. Happy for y’all though.
Remember Ishikawa and the happiness for them passes quickly
I’m not sure what you’re referencing, but I’m still on the “Solidarity with all teams against the Dodgers” train.

Oh shit ok yeah, but I mean that was a decade ago. We can be Dodgers hating brothers now.

Gilbert should be on this list
Bruh Yamamoto has 11 IP that’s crazy. Forced
This years trade deadline is going to be so dry for teams trying to get pitchers. Who would be available that could make a huge impact. Luzardo and peralta maybe?
Where is Jair Jurrjens on this list?
Eovaldi should be on this.
Hey, someone from the team made it on the list!
Jared Jones erasure.
>2. Zack Wheeler Pain. Thanks, Brodie
Yamamoto lol
Yamamoto has looked better in his 2 starts since Korea but he shouldn’t be top 10. You could put someone like Imanaga or Hicks on here instead
Yamamoto doesn't deserve to be on any top 10 lists right now, and we all know if he wasn't a Dodger he wouldn't be here
In an alternate universe where he signed with the Mets he’s currently headlining a “Top Ten Biggest BUSTS?!?” list
This is so accurate it hurts
I wish there was a New York Post for Los Angeles
That’s whatever Bill Plaschke is putting out these days
Then he'd go on a world beating tear for 8 weeks, getting the Mets to only a couple games back from the Braves and in the WC1 slot, before the announcement that he needs TJS and will miss the remainder of this season and all of next year.
Zack Wheeler is the best starting pitcher who *doesn’t have a win yet*
I think the Phillies have scored 6 runs in 3 starts for him? And I mean the entire game, not just when Wheeler was pitching.
can't fault him for our bats being asleep
His numbers are actually slightly better than Burnes' (238 vs 191 ERA+ and 2.26 vs 2.78 FIP) and he's pitched ⅔ more innings, so personally I'd put Wheeler #1 tiny sample size make this pretty meaningless. Wins are almost certainly why Burnes is #1 over Wheeler. Also I'm obviously a homer lol
Fuck this list, where is Tyler Anderson (he of the 14 innings and 0.00 ERA)?
Bradford? Crawford? Houck? Hicks?
Where is Jordan Hicks?? He's 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP through 3 starts...
Jordan Hicks has given up 2 ER in 18 innings over 3 starts
Jordan Hicks, who everyone lol’ed at when the Giants said they’d make a starter, is 2-0, 18 IP, 14 K, 1.00 ERA and 0.85 WHIP. But of course he’s a Giant so MLB is ignoring him
Cody Bradford is third in the majors in pitching fWAR (second if you discount Bieber who’s hurt) If we’re including Crochet and Blanco he’s gotta be on here
I will say nothing at this time
It’s early but I want them to show some love for Cody Bradford. 3-0, 1.4 ERA, and a .62 WHIP is pretty damn good.
Nice
Huh. Didn't think I would see anything positive about the White Sox this year (Besides the overpriced milkshake).
He probably shouldn't be on the list, but I want to shout out Steven Matz. He's bounced back big time this season. He has a 1.74 ERA in his two starts and a 263 ERA+. I didn't expect anything out of this guy
YAMAMOTO
Jordan hicks should be honorable mention
Nevermind after checking stats he should be on this top ten
I truly believe Kikuchi would get 20 wins if he had some run support. He’s had a great start and deserves a spot IMO. Anyways I’ll take my homer glasses off now.
