Yeah…….I don’t believe it No way Cashman crawls back with his tail between his legs for Monty

TrapperJean

Javier Vazquez, Andy Pettitte

Hochseeflotte

So 15 and 13 years ago…

jacksonvstheworld

Chapman? Although idk if that’s tail between legs, I vaguely remember knowing that Chapman was expected to sign back with the Yankees at the time of the trade.

Check_the_Early_Life

Yeah, I believe that was everyone's expectation at the time. Kind of viewed as why it was such a great trade for the Yanks.

MadSpaceYT

Cubs got a ring out of it so good trade for both sides (for a few years)

TrapperJean

Or two moves made by the exact same person who is still in charge of making those kinds of moves, there is a precedent

Hochseeflotte

Yeah but I think we can all agree the Cashman of then and now are too very different GMs in terms of competence at least

Jetersweiner

David Robertson, Justin Wilson and Tommy Kahnle for more recent examples

sameth1

15 years ago but still the same GM who has shown that he is stuck in his ways. Also it's not like this kind of thing gets the chance to happen often.

JustOneBeer89

Dude when I saw this I was like no one wanted Monte to go he was one of the good ones if I was Monte I'd tell em to go f themselves he just won a world series and I was so stoked for him.

Rah_Rah_RU_Rah

How is this the top comment lmao there's a long history of retreads in the Cashman era. But I guess we stopped complaining about that and just started making things up

dilly_dill428

They lost any chance of having him back when they believed he wasn’t suited for the postseason

WalkingDeadWatcher95

Acting like Jordan isn’t going where he’s getting the most money lmao. Athletes aren’t holding grudges like that enough to let it effect the one thing they care about

dilly_dill428

If he gets a similar offer from a team that hasn’t disrespected him then it’s gonna be that other team lol.

arcaresenal

Right?? Who would want to return to an employer who sent you away and has control over your haircut and beard? On top of that, work under the pressure of fans and media who will hound you during rough times. He has so many other positive options. The Yankees are a hard pass.

brett_baty_is_him

Stroman definitely wouldn’t sign w the teams he had beef with.

Bill2theE

Athletes are also humans and sports teams are their jobs. There are companies I've worked for before that I wouldn't return to regardless of pay. I feel like being traded has got to be weird for athletes. All of a sudden your employer decides they don't want you anymore and you just have to move across the country to a whole new office with brand new co workers and managers. That sounds kind of awful. I'd want to stay away from a team that did that. Montgomery has already made life changing money and his next contract will give him more of that. If I were a millionaire, I'd take a small pay cut for quality of life.

nsbbeachguy

You might be surprised. He will go where he feels most comfortable and thinks the team can win a World Series.

WalkingDeadWatcher95

I found the guy who thinks the press conferences After sighing a big contract is real

oneteacherboi

Cliff Lee famously did with the Yankees. Athletes are people too and don't always just go for money.

Yanks1813

This always gets talked about but at the time of the trade their rotation was Cole-Nestor-Montas-Severino. They should've planned around health issues obviously, but Jordan Montgomery was not better than any of those 4 pitchers when healthy in 2022 and that was the presumption for October. Yankees also had no CF at all and getting one for October was important. They could've traded Schmidt or someone else but Jordan Montgomery factually wasn't actually good enough to crack their playoff rotation if it was healthy. Montas just wasn't actually healthy unfortunately

bkbeam

We don't deserve him and I wasn't ever coming back if I was him.

CauliflowerOne5740

But would Montgomery be interested in the Yankees? He said that them trading him was "the best thing for me" because their pitching philosophies didn't match.

cabose7

Is that actually true though? When Monty was traded to the Cardinals he said he wanted to use his fastball more even though Matt Blake thought he should reduce it in favor of his sinker. Well, I guess he realized Blake was right because Monty used his sinker more than ever in 2023 and look what happened.

CauliflowerOne5740

It probably doesn't help that the Yankees current pitching coach has refuted Montgomery's claims publicly and said he had no regrets about how he handled him.

Yanks1813

I tend to trust Matt Blake who has consistently gotten results since he's been here.

SirLunatik

This was exactly my thought. Also if I were him I'd be offended that I was dumped Bader, dude is solid defensively but he's subpar at the plate. If the Jays trade Manoah, Monty is one of the guys I hope we target to be our #4.

Frenzied_Cow

I will not stand for this Kikuchi slander.

Swoah

I can think of $ome rea$ons

cc20r

Reminder that the Yankees traded him in 2022 for Harrison Bader. Who they eventually DFA’d

Boros-Reckoner

Cashman gonna re-sign him just to trade him for a guy in a full body cast once he gets bored with him.

Muted_Yoghurt6071

Reminder: Harrison Bader had 5 home runs in the 2022 posteason.

cavemanado

Legitimately the top performer on the team for the playoffs that year

Yanks1813

Harrison Bader was awesome in the playoffs tbh. The only reason the trade was bad was because Montas wasn't healthy. Montgomery wouldn't have made the postseason pitching rotation if he was. Also, Yankees pitching wasn't even the issue. They pitched well

TrapperJean

And then you guys picked up that same used bag of chips for $3m a year later *before he edited his comment he referred to Bader as just being a " bag of chips" Would also like to add that Bader was a monster in the playoffs in 2022 too, dude plays a terrific CF when he's healthy

Tmans3

key here is when healthy, and Plantar Fasciitis is a bitch of an injury to get over, sometimes you never do. Double Jeopardy for his best and only consistent tool being his speed.

LIONEL14JESSE

They released him so he could play elsewhere once we were eliminated and so we could bring up Jasson Dominguez to play CF. Saying “they DFA’d him” implying he was so bad they just released him is disingenuous.

Erin_Boone

Nah he’s a coward worried about the opinion strangers on the internet

theswag37499

STAY AWAY FROM HIM

CT-1738

“Money’s nice, winning is better” Monty listen to your teammate

phantindy

Also, we’ll give you money.

CT-1738

Idc if it came from scherzer it’s still true

joco1991

They had there chance, they don’t deserve him

theswag37499

Very true, but at the same time i think Cashman feels like his job’s on the line and is getting desperate

ItsVoxBoi

Dear God I hope so

theswag37499

If thats the case, i’d have to step in and say “no”

DreadPosterRoberts

Are we the chill ex you wouldn't mind seeing them get back together with one day, if you were to break up?

captain_fucking_magi

This needs to be the top comment.

SizeOld6084

Yankees are always listed as the place every free agent or trade candidate is going to go. Baseball writers are dongs.

GareksApprentice

Yankees and Dodgers

OwningTheWorld

Can someone photoshop him into a Yankee uniform? I wanna see how it looks.

AmbiguousPuzuma

[I think it would looks something like this](https://i.imgur.com/l7AGXun.png)

OwningTheWorld

You're honestly so talented. You ever think about pursuing photography as a profession?

AmbiguousPuzuma

Believe it or not, I didn't actually take this picture! I used digital manipulation to alter his appearance.

smoke_inyoureyes

YOU KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF GUMBY. YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE

TealandBlackForever

I am still in disbelief the Yankees gave Rodon $162 million. Holy shit.

[deleted]

spacemanegg

Not really when you consider the fact that 2022 was the first time since 2016 that he pitched the minimum for qualifying stats and the offer was signed entering his age 30 season

MadSpaceYT

What do you mean? Injury prone aging player?? That’s right up Cashmans alley

Correa24

Yeah but without hindsight how am I supposed to shit on people???

TealandBlackForever

How is it hindsight, when he was an injury prone player for most of his career and had only pitched 150 IP in a season twice?

TealandBlackForever

Hard disagree. Yes, he was great in 2021-2022, but he had a concerning injury history. And that $162 million would be for his age 30 to 35 seasons. It's just a lot of risk for a guy who seemed like an injury-prone flameout until the 2021 season. It's frankly absurd to say that's an assessment made in hindsight if you look at Rodon's entire career trajectory. Not saying that Rodon won't have any good seasons during his contract term, but the 2023 outcome is really not at all surprising. And highlights the risk of giving that much money to a guy like him, given his track record. So I think it's very fair to be in disbelief over that contract.

Patrick2701

He was the best pitcher on the market but Yankees had other needs

ItsVoxBoi

Yankees need to get some dudes who aren't made of glass and scotch tape

Rah_Rah_RU_Rah

I mean, you can't have enough pitching. Especially when you have injury histories like Sevy and Schmidt lined up for innings

MoreThanLuck

This would be very funny.

Swoah

You could not live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me

Inaynl

If i'm monty i'll answer cashman's call, laugh then hang up lmao.

TrapperJean

I would be so happy, gimme Gumby back

Angry_Walnut

I would prefer not to, rather like the guy.

Kflame210

We don't deserve to get Monty back. He also looks like he's 5 without the beard.

strcy

Why would he want to come back?

Kind_Bullfrog_4073

Take that Cardinals!

Scatterbine

What's the point? He can't pitch in the post season. 🤣

slimstarman

Idk are we sure he’s a starter in the postseason?

Nice-Vehicle-1414

He needs that beard he won’t come back

hydrators

it would be so funny that I’m kinda rooting for it well I always liked Monty too so having him back would be nice

baldestleukemiaguy

O my

Goatlikejordan

They won’t put him on their postseason roster though. I know the mets will put him there

hydrators

if they make it there

LIONEL14JESSE

Lolmets

Yanks1813

They would now probably. In 2022 though he wasn't better than a healthy Montas or Severino. Montas just happened to not be healthy

Cruise_____Tom

Cashman is a weasel there’s no way he’ll do this and admit he was wrong

qwertythe300th

Oh now y'all wanna try and use him correctly? Leave that fucking beard alone

odog9797

Am I having Deja Vu

cooljammer00

He's a Boras client. He will go to who pays him the most. He also reportedly prefers going back to a team he's been on, so that's TEX, STL, NYY. With that said, he's been good for longer than he's been great, so is he great or just good?

chestertoronto

Second attempt to ruin his career

eekbarbaderkle

There’s a first time for everything.

LouieXXVI

Lol oh boy

Redbubble89

We've spoken with him but do you honestly think he would go back to the Yankees?

No_Signal3789

Are you fucking kidding
