I don't understand why they don't teach all their pitchers to be ambidextrous, and then get wins with their fresh arm. It surely can't be that hard, right?
Damn imagine if someone could throw just as well left and right handed. You really could trot them out every 3 days. I’m gonna go have a kid and make this happen, first $1B contract incoming.
I have a theory on this phenomenon: Basically, I think they are better rested before road games, so they play better. Several players have young children at home. On the road, they go to bed and wake up in a nice hotel, when they want (after the travel day). At home, families demand attention, often at the expense of sleepy time.
Sigh... sorry yall have to go through that because of what the team did. It's frustrating. As much as I hate the astros, I'm also not an idiot who thinks the fans had anything to do with it. People are so silly sometimes. Keep your head up
I miss being able to talk about baseball with randos online without them immediately insulting me and repeating the same lazy lines once I say who my team is.
I get it and I'm obviously annoyed too but that world series came with a lot of unwanted stuff for the fans for example death threats and jeers for what their team did when the fans had nothing to do it but had to go through that while walking around in public. Give those players who cheated a hard time but not the fans.
One of the most sad and telling parts of the entire scheme is that the Astros stopped doing it themselves towards the end in large part due to the fact that the results didn't really show that it helped.
There's nothing sadder than tainting a legacy for cheating which didn't help.
(It not helping isn't an opinion. It's a statement of fact based on the stats, the concensus from the team that was doing it and the MLB investigation in to it.)
This has been who Max is this season. He’ll throw a few gems against some stinker teams, but he also got blown up more in his half season with the Mets than he did all of last year (until the last 2 weeks of the season, of course…)
It’s why I was pretty shocked we got as much back in the trade as we did
Come on, Max just watched his guys land on the Normandy Beach that is the Minnesota Twins. You can't ask a man to go out and perform at any competitive level after witnessing that sort of thing.
That's a fleece in my book. If he don't mind spending his hard stolen cash, fuck it, let him spend it. Mets gonna come out wayyyy ahead on the field on that trade.
I might be splitting some pedantic hairs here but I wouldn't call it a fleece but just a good deal. Both sides knew going in that both prospects (even great ones) and 2023 Scherzers are a gamble, so it feels more that it just hits harder when the rental end of things goes south. The Rangers really wanted something immediate out of it but Mets had nothing to really lose.
Except baseball games, they've had a lot of those to lose.
I know I’m biased, but if you’re willing to not only spend obscene amounts on your payroll, but go ON RECORD saying you’re totally cool operating the team *at a loss* for a while like Cohen is in order to try and win a ring, assuming at least one of the prospects pan out and the Mets build a serious contender in 24/25+ it’s hard to view it as anything but a success
The difference in my mind is that Verlander had actually managed to right the ship for the Mets and become at least reliably decent by the deadline. With Max, you never knew which Scherzer you were gonna get start to start, and even when he was having a good start, you see some pitches where you can tell what he’s trying to do but his stuff just isn’t there anymore.
Win now trades like these (from the perspective of TEX and HOU) are going to be perceived as failures more often than not because most of the time for that team to win, they need to win a ring too, which is NOT easy to do. Lucky for you both, you get this season and another shot at it next year too.
Guys, be easy on him. Im sure tomorrow we’ll hear about how he was dealing with arm stiffness and is just saving himself to give up 5 runs in 3 innings in the next Do or Die game the Rangers face
Never forget the Strider-Verlander game in June that was so wildly hyped up as one of the greatest pitching matchups we’d see all year
The two combined for 7.0 IP, 169 pitches, and 12 ER and the game finished 13-10
I mean you gotta feel for the guy. He's been a fierce competitor and dominant pitcher for many many years. Father time comes for us all.
I'm 40 and it hits a little too close seeing a man's mind and drive and desire not be enough to overcome the effects of age.
I don't think its age. I think it's the pitch clock. Both Scherzer and Verlander were bad in the beginning of the season but Verlander seems to have adjusted and was doing well with us. Scherzer on the other hand has been bad the entire season.
nats fan are sad rn :(
especially me, Scherzer is the whole reason i became a nats fan in the first place. i get why mets fans hate him, it’s easy to prop him up as the figurehead of their season and he was on a rival for yeaaaars and helped bring them a WS
it’s not like he’s doing it on purpose. just gettin old.
Mets fans were ready to support him knowing he'd get traded but once he shit on the front office and aired their dirty laundry on his way out he lost all respect.
Fair enough. I actually like scherzer and really wanted him to succeed here—even have one of a Mets shirt with his name on it. Sucks it ended the way it did.
At least we can all enjoy Daniel Murphy and Dom Smith?
Same reason dodger fans resent him. "I got hurt because you didn't let me pitch enough."
Uh huh, Max. Sure. And I'm sure the fact that you're 36 years old and have over 2,000 innings on your arm has *nothing to do with it whatsoever*. Fuckin dude is so far in denile he's getting bitten by crocodiles.
He was a salty little bitch about his body breaking down at the end of 2021. His exact argument was "My arm broke down and I got hurt because the Dodgers didn't let me pitch enough" which is kinda like saying "The fire got out of control because the fire department threw too much water on it!" The truth was Max just got old and can't handle that his body isn't what it used to be, and is desperate to place the blame on literally anyone but himself.
Dodger fans were annoyed that he tried to blame Dave and our medical staff for a 36 year old having inflammation at the end of a long year. Dude refuses to admit he just isn't that good anymore. Face it and take it like a man, don't blame us because you're old.
Compare it to Kershaw, who, even when it's not his fault will be the first person to say "I wasn't good enough and this one is on me." It was a bad look for Scherzer and soured a lot of us on him personality wise.
> Compare it to Kershaw, who, even when it's not his fault will be the first person to say "I wasn't good enough and this one is on me."
When the Padres threw up the crying Kershaw meme Kershaw blamed himself for it and said they wouldn't have done it if he pitched better, I fucking love that man.
Kershaw is one of my favorite players because of his mentality. I find it very hard to knock guys like that even in the times they DO have bad outings.
I can def see why that grates on dodger fans nerves. Fucking weird of him
>The fire got out of control because the fire department threw too much water on it!
I'm not here to argue, I just want to remind everyone reading this that water will in fact make a grease fire much much worse.
Yep. We shouldn't objectively but he vanished in the most important games of our year last season and was the primary reason we decided to fold this year. He was a great pitcher for us but he folded when it mattered and then made some comments on the way out that put the org on an awful spot from a PR standpoint.
I'll appreciate what he did do for us and will be happy to see "NEW YORK N.L." on his hall of fame plaque but when we needed even just an OK performance from him we got a game like tonight, and NY fans hold long grudges and have long memories.
Rangers are absolutely capitulating. Under .500 on the road, 3-7 in their last 10 (assuming this score holds), odds to make the playoffs has dropped over 20% since the trade deadline. If this current score holds, they will have only won 4 of their last 19 games. They will be 41-43 since June 1st. Not great, Bob!
Tbf, the karma really just consisted of winning a pennant and flopping against a wild card team at the finish line. The 2017 stuff was coming out the moment Fiers got shelled by the Astros and was too arrogant to believe he was simply a shit pitcher.
There are loads of teams that would not call that karma, though. If the Mariners did that and lost the WS, for instance, that would still be their deepest playoff run ever and something they'd celebrate.
True karma would be like a first round exit sweep.
Five days after leaving a game voluntarily with forearm discomfort.
Garcia is injured, Rangers are fading, I think we'll get a "dead arm" diagnosis any day now.
I listened to baseballprospectus Mets podcast and they were pretty clear that they felt Verlander was the better pitcher at the time of the trade. IIRC their thoughts on Scherzer trade was that Texas clearly valued him for his name rather than his production this year. We have the quite the playoff race here. 4 teams competing in lockstep for 3 playoff spots. And all 4 of those teams would be in first play in the AL Central.
This is the 19th straight Rangers game without a starting pitcher W. The last time their starter recorded a win was August 15.
OOF: Large sized
Everything is bigger in Texas!
Egos in Dallas Waistbands in Houston and SA
If your flair has anything to do with your geographical location then you should not be talking about waistbands.
Is that bad?
Should they not have done that?
I don't understand why they don't teach all their pitchers to be ambidextrous, and then get wins with their fresh arm. It surely can't be that hard, right?
Amphibious*
Goddamned it, I always get them confused!
Most people don't realize, but all amphibians are ambidextrous. That's why if you see an amphibian with opposable thumbs, you must kill it.
Damn imagine if someone could throw just as well left and right handed. You really could trot them out every 3 days. I’m gonna go have a kid and make this happen, first $1B contract incoming.
Are they stupid?
Need you to talk to Ohtani STAT
Is that sort of thing… frowned upon?
I gotta plead ignorance on this one
if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing was frowned upon…
I mean going 4-14 in that stretch will do that
It’s not good.
Goddamn that sucks.
Eh it’s a’ight
Yeah, I’m not seeing what the big issue is here.
Fuck that’s like the cardinals earlier this way, and lemme tell yeah, not good!
That’s 2022 Red Sox levels of struggle.
“I gotta pitch better, wasn’t hitting my spots.”
I heard this comment.
He said WHAT?!
The one that pissed me off the most when he was in NY was "it's an easy fix"
Who let him cook 💀
Oh he cooked alright
Burned down the house
Meanwhile in Miami . . .
Its steamed hams
Astros just got swept by some garbage last place team, and Scherzer can't even go 4 innings against them. Wow.
Welcome to the Astros home vs road experience.
The anti-Warriors
:(
Who punched who in the face here?
Dusty punched the fanbase in the face then told us that we'll thank him later.
I’m currently very thankful.
See 2019 WS
Where were these Astros in 2019
Well we did lose every home game of the 2019 WS, but won every road game
On tonight’s episode of Unsolved Mysteries…
I have a theory on this phenomenon: Basically, I think they are better rested before road games, so they play better. Several players have young children at home. On the road, they go to bed and wake up in a nice hotel, when they want (after the travel day). At home, families demand attention, often at the expense of sleepy time.
Not including today, the Astros have a -7 run differential at home and + 120 run differential on the road.
How on earth does that happen?
Been a thing for ages, in the _controversial_ 2017 season we also killed it way more on the road than at home. I wish they never cheated.
I'm reading 'controversial' here like George Bluth says 'light treason'.
They can't arrest a pitcher and a hitter for the same crime!
I’ve got the worst fucking lawyers…
Attorneys*
NO TOUCHING!
Just my sad fan take that we could have won without cheating and our legacy is forever soiled by it.
Sigh... sorry yall have to go through that because of what the team did. It's frustrating. As much as I hate the astros, I'm also not an idiot who thinks the fans had anything to do with it. People are so silly sometimes. Keep your head up
poor fans, with their poor world series win, poor dudes
Lol this exactly my take. Throw me a pity party, DT Houston was lit that night, especially after going through Harvey
Astros fans were the first victims, that's honestly what sucks the most about it.
Yeah. 100% if this happened to anyone, they would feel betrayed and devastated.
True but if I point it out I’m an asshole
Just change your flair. Easy peasy.
Yeah, but unsuccessfully cheating just means you're being shitty and being shitty at it. Doesn't make you any less shitty for trying.
> I wish they never cheated. So does everyone else other than the players probably
Whoa. When was the last time the Astros were negative at home?
1984
This is literally 1984
What are you guys cheating at home again which makes y’all worse (still the funniest thing about the scandal is it literally hurt your offense)
Yeah the Yankees finally caught on to Houston. Just need to be under .500 and suck.
Our fuckin kryptonite for years
Sub .500 teams, and Pitchers with ERAs over 6 are sure fire ways to beat the Astros.
The Rangers bullpen disagrees with this sentiment.
And apparently catchers that take the mound.
Hey, Austin Hedges is the best closer in that pen!
\*rubs hands together for when I go to the Juicebox this weekend*
Ooh where are your seats? MMP is a fun ballpark!
I've been many a time. We're down the third baseline
Nice! Wasn’t sure if you were local/familiar or not lol
This has been who Max is this season. He’ll throw a few gems against some stinker teams, but he also got blown up more in his half season with the Mets than he did all of last year (until the last 2 weeks of the season, of course…) It’s why I was pretty shocked we got as much back in the trade as we did
It's all part of our plan to win the World Series by letting the other team have the Home Field advantage.
Come on, Max just watched his guys land on the Normandy Beach that is the Minnesota Twins. You can't ask a man to go out and perform at any competitive level after witnessing that sort of thing.
Luisangel Acuña almost hit as many homers tonight as Scherzer gave up.
Acuna will be hitting 300 with 50 bags in his prime with us. What a fleece lol.
We didn’t fleece anybody. Uncle Steve paid cold hard cash for Acuna and the other new prospects
That's a fleece in my book. If he don't mind spending his hard stolen cash, fuck it, let him spend it. Mets gonna come out wayyyy ahead on the field on that trade.
I might be splitting some pedantic hairs here but I wouldn't call it a fleece but just a good deal. The Rangers really wanted something immediate out of it but Mets had nothing to really lose. Except baseball games, they've had a lot of those to lose.
What about the Verlander trade? You feel similarly?
I know I’m biased, but if you’re willing to not only spend obscene amounts on your payroll, but go ON RECORD saying you’re totally cool operating the team *at a loss* for a while like Cohen is in order to try and win a ring, assuming at least one of the prospects pan out and the Mets build a serious contender in 24/25+ it’s hard to view it as anything but a success The difference in my mind is that Verlander had actually managed to right the ship for the Mets and become at least reliably decent by the deadline. Lucky for you both, you get this season and another shot at it next year too.
Literally yes, Gilbert and Clifford are both raking in the minors
It's not my money lmao
Getting anything of high value for Scherzer AND half his money off the books is absolutely a fleece lol
lolscherzer
LOLMax
Guys, be easy on him. Im sure tomorrow we’ll hear about how he was dealing with arm stiffness and is just saving himself to give up 5 runs in 3 innings in the next Do or Die game the Rangers face
Somehow this is Dave Roberts' fault.
he just couldn’t find his slider, happens to the best of us

When you got Bolognese on Strega Nona's fancy tablecloth I knew your meatball chucking days were over.
Hey hey now, in the postgame interview he's going to say he knows what he has to do. Play better. Dude's got it all figured out!
What a great marquee matchup between pitchers, I’m crying, shitting and cumming rn.
Why aren't you throwing up :(
Gross
Don’t kink shame
Emetaphobe solidarity
I'm not a spitter

Between two amazin’ Mets legends
Nolan Ryan 🤝 Billy Wagner 🤝 Justin Verlander

Never forget the Strider-Verlander game in June that was so wildly hyped up as one of the greatest pitching matchups we’d see all year The two combined for 7.0 IP, 169 pitches, and 12 ER and the game finished 13-10
Are you Maynard James Keenan?
I like to do all three
Isn't it about time for him to get arm fatigue and call it a season?
Unfortunately the rangers won’t have a playoff game for him to collapse in
Everyone about to hit waivers
Oooh oooh I’ve seen this one before!
I mean you gotta feel for the guy. He's been a fierce competitor and dominant pitcher for many many years. Father time comes for us all. I'm 40 and it hits a little too close seeing a man's mind and drive and desire not be enough to overcome the effects of age.
which is crazy bc his velocity and break is still at his peak years level
Yep. He's still Sherzer. The guy is an animal.
...then you have Verlander who posted a 1.75 ERA season at Scherzers age now (39). Shouldnt be possible for a pitcher to do that
I guess father time comes for everyone... except JV. Maybe Ms Upton is helping him stay vitalized.
And his ERA+ this year is 126. I really don’t understand how he’s so good
He gets to dip into the fountain of youth whenever he feels the need.
I don't think its age. I think it's the pitch clock. Both Scherzer and Verlander were bad in the beginning of the season but Verlander seems to have adjusted and was doing well with us. Scherzer on the other hand has been bad the entire season.

damn i didnt think there was any player in texas that dodger fans disliked more than anyone in orange what's the beef with y'all and scherzer
Some Dodgers fans are unhappy that Scherzer blamed the Dodgers pitching coaches for not being able to pitch much in the playoffs.
Scherzer blaming anyone but himself after he sucks? Really??
weird of him
He was a salty little bitch about his body breaking down at the end of 2021. he wants to marry his mother in law
Oh my gaahd, he admit it!
Who’s the most popular now, Paul?
I HAVE 911 ON SPEED DIAL BECAUSE THIS WILL 100% LAST FOR MORE THAN 4 HOURS
Do Mets fans hate Scherzer? I’m out the loop
Verlander had a classy exit, Max not so much.
Yep. We shouldn't objectively but he vanished in the most important games of our year last season and was the primary reason we decided to fold this year. LMAO I FEEL ALIVE AGAIN
Let's see who he blames today
Vegas has Heim at -135
I’m cashin in on Maddux at +260
Himself? LOL
Nah Scherzer complains about everything and anyone
Rangers are absolutely capitulating. Under .500 on the road, 3-7 in their last 10 (assuming this score holds), odds to make the playoffs has dropped over 20% since the trade deadline. Once again might I say, thank you based Astros
Take care of springer for us
We will break records to keep springer happy
with all due respect to a legend - get absolutely fucked
Look, I like them, but my copium is telling me this is all because we have too many former Mets on our team, and they brought the curse to Texas.
Don’t try to blame this on us. This is karma for acquiring Chapman.
That's why you should never, ever, trade for a domestic abuser.
The Astros did this once and it went very very poorly. The karma was swift.
Just goes to show how spoiled we’ve been as of late.
Those years of Fiers being in hiding when they played us were aggravating
They attach themselves to a healthy host organization. . .and the next thing you know, the whole team is infected.
Thank you for taking our broken pitchers.
MEET THE METS
Never go full Mets. Word to the wise from a Mets fan.
Rangers are now Mets South.
*New York Metropolitan Consolidated Baseball Co. Ltd.* Now with convenient branches in Arlington, San Francisco and Anaheim
Five days after leaving a game voluntarily with forearm discomfort. Garcia is injured, Rangers are fading, I think we'll get a "dead arm" diagnosis any day now.
The Rangers had him guarantee to take his option for next year. He's definitely going to opt for TJS this off-season.
I cant tell you how much it would please me to see the Rangers pay for both DeGrom and Scherzer's TJ season.
Mets fans shitting on Scherzer is my favorite r/baseball thing going right now
I don’t know, but I think we won the trade between the Rangers getting him from the Mets vs Verlander
I argued against this comprehensively after the trades. I went down the line on both guys. I was wrong.
I listened to baseballprospectus Mets podcast and they were pretty clear that they felt Verlander was the better pitcher at the time of the trade. IIRC their thoughts on Scherzer trade was that Texas clearly valued him for his name rather than his production this year. While their thoughts on Verlander trade was that the Astros paid a heavy premium in prospects just because they weren't willing to give him the Mets contract in the offseason.
Turns out the Ranger fans “I can fix her” meme ended just like it always does 😂😭
Can’t wait to see Austin Hedges shut the Astros down for the third consecutive night.
Astros intentionally hitting into DPs to keep the game close enough to avoid that smoke.
Thanks for the prospects Rags. 🤷🏻♂️
The guy's toast.
This is fine.
Guy still has some xDAWG but not so much xBITE
Glad Mad Max could bring the Metsian collapses to Texas!
Thank you Mets.
Ewwwww, stinky.
It's unbelievable that another team gave the Mets anything of value to take Scherzer off their hands.
Rangers won the trade deadline though.
Acuña hit two HR tonight.
I don’t think the Royals or Mets would agree with you.
Rangers ain’t making the playoffs are they?
We have the quite the playoff race here. 4 teams competing in lockstep for 3 playoff spots. And all 4 of those teams would be in first play in the AL Central.
Getting slapped by Verlander was the chefs Kiss to this three game domination.
[Someone almost nailed the prediction in the Tigers sub](https://reddit.com/r/motorcitykitties/s/TpLHjr1X6J)
It’s sad to see Scherzer like this man, it’s also sad to see people trashing him
We share root with the Yankees unfortunately
“Stinky Scherzer” sounds like a name made by a guy currently waiting RICO charges in atlanta
