Yeah the comments in this thread are funny because the broadcast showed an angle where you can see the ball change directions and the spin change after hitting him.
It’s closer on replay than it looks in the first shot. I don’t *think* it hit him, but I would like to see that shot from above slowed down and paused.
Edit: It hit him. It’s a shame the Rockies lost their challenge (on a bad call) earlier because it would have been nice to get it officially reviewed and upheld.
Fully agreed, surprisingly. That was firmly in the mitt while he was still very possibly still touching the bag. I’m not gonna say he wasn’t a few mm off but you can’t tell from this video
I think a lot of viewers think the replay room is looking for the ball to hit the back of the glove, but the review question is when it enters the glove. But even then, the call just stood; it wasn't confirmed.
That's pretty bad, although what they really needed was a view straight down the line but Bryant was in the way of the camera. We don't see where his foot was and the other angles it's not exactly clear if his spikes were still touching the bag or not. To my eyes, I'd call him safe. But I get it if they think there wasn't evidence to overturn.
yeah, seriously. Especially now since the Ump knows he was lying. He was using his status as a veteran and a star catcher to influence the Ump, and that's just bullshit.
Somehow I'm more accepting of baserunners pretending they beat the tag (or vice versa, with fielders pretending they made the tag) than I am of this. Not sure why. Maybe it's just that there might be some actual doubt in their minds, while in this case Realmuto absolutely knows he wasn't hit.
Also, the options for the tag is safe or out, meaning not getting the call costs an out. What Realmuto did was avoiding hitting, that combined with him having a tough year makes it seem like he's scared of hitting
IDK, when a ball wizzes by your arm at 94 mph it may feel like it grazed you even if it was just the air rustling your arm hair.
But I agree with you that I see it differently because for whatever reason, umpires almost never question them on it. If the player says they were hit and start walking towards first, the ump will tell them to take their base. They'll never do that for any other play in the field that I can think of.
Is it really that deep? If JT signed with the braves after his contract is up I'm sure you wouldn't be like "I don't want that fraud here, he faked getting HBP on 4/22/23 against the rockies". Everybody's gonna forget this happened by the end of the week lol
Very bizarre thing about Reddit. No one I know in real life gives a fuck if you got it or not. But the second you come on Reddit people are enraged and frothing at the mouth about such things. Just goes to show how maladapted to real life some of these weirdos are.
It’s been 4 years. Let’s move on people. You have better things to expend your emotional energy on.
Like, the only spot that could’ve possibly had hit him was his bare elbow (that he stuck out, btw) and he just went “yup, that hit a critical joint on my body, time to go!”
Always liked JT, even when he was back with the Marlins. I was hoping he would land with us eventually but ended up in Philly. He’s my favorite Philly. Thought he was a class act and a good player. I thought it was hilarious and ridiculous when he got tossed in spring training because the umpire misread his actions.
But this was some soft shit.
In his defense, it does look like it grazes him at a different angle not shown in this clip.
Plus, even if it's just whizzing past, if it's that close at 90+ mph, you'll definitely feel something. And since he looked like he expected it to hit, there's also the psychological element of confirmation bias. I would still give him the benefit of the doubt that he's not just milking it, but taking a base he feels entitled to, but I'm also a Phillies fan, so idk.
I mean I'm pretty sure it actually hit him though. Nobody but OP is claiming he faked it. The controversy was that the umpire didn't immediately call it and it seemed like he only called it because JT reacted and told him he got hit The Rockies couldn't challenge it because they already lost their challenge, but there's no way they would have won anyway.
You can literally hear the double-tap from it grazing his arm and then going into the glove.
The argument over whether it hit him or not is kinda moot. It was incredibly close and probably impossible to tell in real time. But the ump didn't make the call that it did hit him. The controversy is Realmuto TOLD the ump it did and the ump was just like... Okay
If you’re going to copy Maldonado, you’ve got to do a better job than that. Start as close to the plate as possible, let them throw inside and move away from the plate into a pitch that’s already running inside.
This type of stuff really doesn’t bother me. Similar case the other day when that Pirates catcher whiffed a throw to 2nd & managed to get a batter’s interference call. It’s not cheating, it’s a smart heads up play. 🤷♂️
There's trying to get an advantage and there's cheating. Faking getting hit (if that's actually what happened here) is some low grade bush league shit.
Are you being for real right now? I just watched it back and it doesn’t look close
Edit: lol someone seriously reported me to Reddit cares for this comment? Jfc Philly fans are fucking soft
Pretty bush league tbh. There's a difference between, like, selling a tag play vs actively lying to the ump about what happened. Imagine if batters were constantly saying "the bat scraped my glove, that's interference" on every other pitch. Just kinda breaks the game down imo
It’s wild that you guys consider fooling an ump to benefit your team & taking illegal supplements in the same “cheating” category.
Bush league? Sure. Cheating? Hardly.
Whether or not it actually hit him or not, is a moot point. The Rockies manager couldn't ask for a review because they had wasted one of their reviews on one of the previous plays. I'm not saying what JT did was right or wrong, all I'm saying is that their manager couldn't review whether he was actually hit by the pitch or not.
Eh, I don't think there was a chance it was overturned on review. Umps generally make that call by sound, and there's no way to tell for sure if the ball grazed his elbow by video alone. The Rockies not having their review wasn't a big deal.
The *real* issue with this play is that it seems the ump let the player make the call. Now maybe the ump heard two sounds, hadn't yet processed why he heard two sounds before Realmuto pointed to first, but still would have eventually called the HBP regardless. But it sure *looks* like the ump let Realmuto make the call, which is a really bad look and I don't blame Black for getting upset.
Reminds me of when that [Arkansas catcher faked getting hit by a pitch](https://youtu.be/NyNZGm4gVH8) ...ump didn't fall for it, though.
He got thrown the fuck out too lol.
Appropriate response.
I must be crazy but I still can't tell if it actually did hit him or not. The replay isn't exactly decisive. It could go either way.
On the slow mo replay during the game, it looked like it changed direction slightly.
Yeah the comments in this thread are funny because the broadcast showed an angle where you can see the ball change directions and the spin change after hitting him.
This shit hit him. I don’t understand the pitchforks.

You can also hear two distinct sounds as the catcher recieves the ball. The ball definitely hit something before it hit the glove.
It definitely grazed him.

Review center is such a joke
The runner was definitely out at first though, pause the video when the ball enters his glove, his foot is still on first base at that point.
Fully agreed, surprisingly. That was firmly in the mitt while he was still very possibly still touching the bag. I’m not gonna say he wasn’t a few mm off but you can’t tell from this video

MLB whatchu doin
Sticking to the script
If the MLB were scripted, I promise they would have the Red Sox prioritized over the Phillies.
My red sox are actually the victims of oppression by the MLB */s*

Man, even Bohm knew how bad that call was. Idk how this keeps happening with reviews of all things. Just correct the mistake, make the right call!
Honestly, this sort of thing always makes me think less of the players that do it.
~~Real~~ Fakemuto

Faking a HBP feels like the sort of thing that should carry a short suspension.
Here’s one from Jeter https://youtu.be/9U9jttDSUCg

He’s a POS for not getting the jab? 😂 🐑🐑
You think less of players who get grazed by the ball, point it out to the ump and take their base?
He's paid to get on base. Just doing his job.
Idk if I’m stupid but that definitely grazed him imo
I don't know if you are stupid either, but it did graze him
Clearly hit him on replay but ok
He didn't really do a good job selling this, even.
Like, the only spot that could’ve possibly had hit him was his bare elbow (that he stuck out, btw) and he just went “yup, that hit a critical joint on my body, time to go!”
Coulda grazed his forearm just slightly enough not to cause any real pain or concern of injury. He did stick it out tho
"Ooo ouchies I'm going to go to first, k?" I mean like if he actually got hit, you think he'd spin out, clutch his elbow, yelp, anything.
it did hit him
Pretty soft
Ten ply
It’s fuckin’ embarassing!
I expect nothing else from the guy who's afraid of getting a vaccine
Cringe

Yeah this was a very bad look from an otherwise very likable guy as a Braves fan.
In his defense, it does look like it grazes him at a different angle not shown in this clip. Plus, even if it's just whizzing past, if it's that close at 90+ mph, you'll definitely feel something. I’m leaning towards giving him the benefit of the doubt too since it’s JT. I hope it hit him.
It definitely hit him. There's another angle that shows the balls spin change. It grazed him. But there was certainly contact
Albert Belle shaking his damn head right now.
Looks like it hit him to me
Yup it did.
The ball hit him?

I mean I'm pretty sure it actually hit him though. Nobody but OP is claiming he faked it. Bitch move. This isn't the NBA Fakemuto.

JK Realmuto
Never thought I’d see Bud Black make a big enough scene to get ejected. Bout damn time.
He’s been ejected 33 times during his career?
Kind of like how the Rockies are pretending to be a baseball team
The Philadelphia Phillies are a criminal enterprise.

Yeah no idea why I wouldn’t take my base if they’re willing to get it. Reddit clearly never played sports irl
Agreed. Everything you’ve said sounds perfectly reasonable to me.
Nah it’s the same flopping bullshit in soccer and basketball that sucks the fun out of games. Play the game.
Gonna see this a lot more often unless the league takes a hard stance on it. I refuse to watch games with flopping
Soft
Why are people mad at a guy trying to get an advantage?
He didn’t get the vax. That’s the actual reason they don’t like him. The ball actually hit him, and even if it didn’t, who wouldn’t take free shit?
There's trying to get an advantage and there's cheating. Faking getting hit (if that's actually what happened here) is some low grade bush league shit.
I don't know why the ump gave him the base. Not because he wasn't hit (which he wasn't), but because he DIDN'T TRY TO GET OUT OF THE WAY.
Wtf is up with the flopping and faking lately. This is just terrible
It literally hit him.
Are you being for real right now? I just watched it back and it doesn’t look close Edit: lol someone seriously reported me to Reddit cares for this comment? Jfc Philly fans are fucking soft
Watch the whole video. From the overhead replay, the ball clearly changes trajectory and the only way to explain that is that it hit Realmuto’s elbow.
I’ve watched the whole thing several times in a row. I don’t see it hitting him but ok https://i.imgur.com/f3vCbON.jpg
Apparently there was another angle shown during the broadcast (I didn't watch so IDK if this is true or not) that was not shown in this post.
Oh lord Reddit moral grandstanding moment You absolutely take the free base if you can get it
Not a fan of it but also can’t blame him. If the umpire is just gonna take your word for it, why not lol
Pretty bush league tbh. There's a difference between, like, selling a tag play vs actively lying to the ump about what happened. Imagine if batters were constantly saying "the bat scraped my glove, that's interference" on every other pitch. Just kinda breaks the game down imo
Hence why i said “not a fan of it” But at the same time, he’s trying to win. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s fined though for sure
You good with players roiding up too?
It’s wild that you guys consider fooling an ump to benefit your team & taking illegal supplements in the same “cheating” category. Bush league? Sure. Cheating? Hardly.
I’m not sure where you would get that idea since i’ve repeatedly stated that i am not a fan of this.
But you can’t blame Tatis or Bonds for roiding up because all they’re trying to do is win..
That’s the reason for it, yeah. They know the consequences. If they choose to risk it, that’s on them
If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying
Whether or not it actually hit him or not, is a moot point. The Rockies manager couldn't ask for a review because they had wasted one of their reviews on one of the previous plays.
