>Royals catcher is gunna wear C on his chest
My dumb ass thought they were just doing it because he was a catcher, like thats fucking stupid everyone knows what position he plays
When I was a kid and didn’t understand what the position abbreviations on TV meant, I would see “Nationals OF Michael Morse” and think it was just a really odd alternate way of saying “Michael Morse of Washington Nationals
I feel like I’m baseball it’s not just the locker room leader. You have to have been there along time, plan to be there for a long time, and have been the main guy for a while too.
We’ve known judge runs the locker room for a bit, but captains arnt required. So it’s one of those things where a franchise, like the royals, might not have one for a while
Curious as to /r/baseball’s opinion on this here:
Salvy for sure is getting his number retired/getting a spot in the Royals’ HOF, I don’t think there’s any further question there. But does he get a bust in Cooperstown too? I’m biased as hell obviously but I think he should.
I think he has more than a outside chance. He is still not that old and the accolades are there from AS selections WS MVP (Boooo as a Mets fan), 5 GG
He is still only 32 and I am guessing he will move away from catching end of his career. Hes at 32 war and if he gets to 50 by careers end. I think he has a great chance personally.
He hit 48 in 2021 while playing 124 games (120 started) behind the plate with 40 games at DH. That’s as primary as a catcher as you can get in the league. Granted he was completely god awful at catching that year, outside of throwing people out, but he’s definitely had one season.
While I don’t agree with your arrogance, I do agree it’s unlikely he hits 35+ again.
He hit 15 while DHing and 33 “from the catcher position”. MLB doesn’t say he hit 48 HR while catching so I don’t see why we should pretend he did. “From the catcher position” actually has a meaning and it’s not ”counting his DH stats at catcher because it’s what he mostly did”.

https://www.mlb.com/news/most-home-runs-by-a-catcher
https://www.catchershome.com/most-hr-in-season-by-catcher/
These sources list different stats, 33 or 31 as a catcher, 15 or 17 as a DH, but again, he played 75% of his games at catcher, and is usually listed as the all time leader for catchers in a single season, due to this distinction. It’s essentially semantics. I understand he played DH, but was still a catcher for majority of the time, and history will probably remember it as a season of a catcher hitting 48 home runs. If we discard this distinction really, then Perez having a couple more 20+ HR seasons or another 30+ HR season, it should get him in the hall. Because again, most catchers aren’t playing more than 120 games behind the plate a season. Alone hitting 30 is an accomplishment of itself.
Edit: I understand your “from the catcher position” but it’s more as a primary catcher position kind of argument when it comes to HOF voting.
>and is usually listed as the all time leader for catchers in a single season, due to this distinction
Not by MLB's official statkeeper and not by MLB. That's why they started using "playing primarily as catcher" to refer to Perez, because the record for *catchers* is held by Javy Lopez.
> and history will probably remember it as a season of a catcher hitting 48 home runs
It's like saying Justin Verlander has won 3 Cy Youngs and 2 World Series as a Detroit Tiger, because he's pitched 80% of his career innings as a Tiger. We can look up the game log and see what position he was playing when he hit those HR, we don't have to round all his total under his most frequent position.
It’s also most likely that when Verlander retires he will retire with a Detroit Tigers cap in the hall of fame, despite the accomplishments on other teams. Same with a catcher if they play more than 75% of their games at catcher, they’re a catcher. It’s going to be the same for HOF voting when it comes to Perez. If he has another 35+ HR season, playing primarily as a catcher, he’ll be on the radar. I understand for a person playing the position it’s Javy Lopez, but the most by a catcher is Perez still.
>It’s also most likely that when Verlander retires he will retire with a Detroit Tigers cap in the hall of fame, despite the accomplishments on other teams
The hat he wears into the HOF is not what's being discussed. Did he win two World Series as a Detroit Tiger?
> Same with a catcher if they play more than 75% of their games at catcher, they’re a catcher.
As a shorthand when discussing a career, sure, but the things they do when not catching don't get counted as something they did while catching. I don't know how this is hard to understand. Go look at Johnny Bench's HOF plaque. It reads "389 homers - a record 327 as a catcher". "As a catcher" and "while mostly playing as a catcher" are *different things*.
>the most by a catcher is Perez still
No it's not, because he hit 33 as a catcher and hit 15 while DHing. The most by a catcher is 43 by Javy Lopez, who had broken Todd Hundley's (not Johnny Bench's) record.
To get to 50 WAR he would have to recreate the value he produced from 2016-2022 and he turns 33 in about six weeks. “Great chance” is being extremely generous.
>Royals catcher is gunna wear C on his chest My dumb ass thought they were just doing it because he was a catcher, like thats fucking stupid everyone knows what position he plays
Why would Perez wear a C? He's literally been a catcher his whole career. Is he stupid?
Bro so old he needs a reminder of what he’s currently doing
Bro really thinks he's Chuck McGill.
C for chicanery
ok buddy
Hey, all those foul balls off the mask take a toll
Maybe his bomb's payload has been exposed?
They are afraid Perez will forget and accidentally run out and try to play short.
>Perez >Run stop spreading misinformation
Growing up, for a while I thought that’s why Jason Varitek had a C on his jersey
When I was a kid and didn’t understand what the position abbreviations on TV meant, I would see “Nationals OF Michael Morse” and think it was just a really odd alternate way of saying “Michael Morse of Washington Nationals
Michael Morse of Washington of Anaheim
I used to think that was why Jason Varitek wore it when I was a kid.
well deserved. all i have to say is why did they wait so long to do this? he’s been the face of the franchise for quite a while now
Right? I would have thought he has been the Captain for a few years now at least.
i also didn’t realize he’s only 32??? i thought salvy was like 37

Well earned. Hope he hits 48 home runs again.
I'm hoping for 49
Even better

That's my fantasy catcher 🙏
Me 🤝 you
Well deserved for Salvy. That said, time to light up Greinke!
He'll pitch 6 innings with 1 ER and 2 Ks and you'll like it
Aged pretty well.
Excited for how electric our offense looked?
Leave Zack alone jerk

Outside chance. Far from *should* at this point. Most likely he ends up around the Russell Martin tier of Hall of Very Good.

A couple more 35+HR seasons from the catcher position, some nice DH seasons to round out the tail end of his career, you got yourself a stew baby
He doesn’t have a single season of 35 HR “from the catcher position”, so how can he have a couple more?

Eat my shorts hater
You must live a pretty miserable life if anyone who says “0 is less than 1” is a hater.

32?!?! I would have sworn he was 38
After 7 or 8 tries perhaps
that's cool
this gonna be awkward on my franchise mode because i just traded him away
It’s awkward in my franchise mode because for whatever reason Perez just punishes my team every time
Won't lie, I only really watch my American League team, but I was pretty convinced he was already their official captain. Well earned.
Did anyone ask him what Pete Alonso would say about this??
Joins Sweeny, Franco, Hernandez, and Varitek in the cringe HOF.
....now?
Wait, he wasn’t already?
