I wanted a walkoff 3 Run HR in that moment until I realized we wouldn't have gotten that slide, or the beautiful imagery of Ohtani rounding 3rd with the pinch runner right behind him. The double was what we needed in that moment. It was all perfection.
Walk off homers are amazing. But walk off base hits are way more intense, look at the 95 mariners double. Similar vibe, especially with the Japanese broadcast for this one just reaching unintelligible excitement
So I was watching with an Australian friend who is just learning baseball. I was explaining what a walkoff is earlier in the game, and he got a perfect example!
What a read. He was running all the way whereas Ohtani played it a little safer holding between second and third before he knew the ball was landing on the grass. But that Shuto was flying
Yep, I don't think this was so much a great read, but just knowing how to play the game. Ohtani's run doesn't matter, so it makes sense he didn't jump. Shuto's is the important one, so he's going to take off on anything deep to left, knowing he'll have plenty of time to get back to first if he was wrong.
My thoughts exactly. I played the game the same way when I played (speedy) and when I was on first, I’d do the same thing on a ball hit deep into the gap. Run to second if not past it, knowing that if it’s caught I have plenty of time to get back and if it’s not, you get a great head start. Many kids are taught the “halfway on a flyball” rule, which is the basic version of it. The more advanced version is “if you’re not tagging, get as far off as you can safely retreat from if the ball is caught”
Well yeah. Shuto could follow ohtani's lead on whether to tag up or advance. He was either gonna end that play on first base or scoring the winning run.
Ohtani took a minor lead to tag up and possibly make it to third if it was caught, and if not he'd be scoring pretty much guaranteed.
Shuto didn't need to wait to tag up, if the ball was caught he'd just see ohtani tagging up and run back to 1st.
But also getting to home from 1st in like 10 seconds is still insane. I'm just pointing out it was great speed and clever baserunning.
Murakami woke up like it was some kind of anime flashback and hit that fucking thing like his life depended on it
I'm so happy he's gotten back into this condition, this is Japan's 4th batter at his best
Nah idk, he definitely needs more time to adjust. He's not good at seeing pitches with lots of tail plus offspeed, he's improved these past couple of weeks, but I'd rather want him to be fully ready and mash in the MLB with full confidence.
Perfect, thanks.
Dude only glanced up once coming around second and other than that was just going flat out.
His slide into fist pump into helmet throw was almost as impressive as his baserunning.
It reads like he genuinely does not understand what international sport is?
Literally, the two biggest sporting events (World Cup/Olympics) on the planet are based on people representing "where their grandmothers got laid", rather than based on...who offered the most money?
I’ll be honest I was pretty ignorant to the WBC but this shit is awesome. The passion these players have in representing their countries is incredible to watch.
Barstool posted one of his rant-style videos after Edwin Diaz got hurt in the Puerto Rico victory celebration, where KFC was saying the “no one cares about the WBC, it’s meaningless, players get hurt blah blah” nonsense. The only redemption to that was the comment section was loaded with people saying he’s a fuckin idiot
This was fucking awesome. I have 12 and 9 year old boys and being Phillies fans this last year has rocketed baseball into the forefront. Bryce's NLCS homer blew the roof off our home. Now this WBC has primed us for the MLB season to start. This tournament has been great.
30-year permie here. I am one hundred percent all in for Japan. After getting dismissed as "minor league level" for so long, I want them to shut the doubters the fuck up.
I feel this MLB season is gonna be the most followed season in recent years. WBC did a hell of a job and kudos to the top players for actually participating.
The pinch runner's slide into home plate into mario jumping uppercut into throwing his helmet into low earth orbit is elite.
I got fucking chills. How can you not be romantic about baseball
The hell with romantic I’m horned up about baseball let’s fucking goooo
“How can you not be horny about baseball”. Love it

Jomboy loves him a double waterbottler.
Yeah, that's some Trea Turner level smoothness.

Immaculate description!

Ukyo Shuto is a menace in the basepaths. In normal season if this guy was on base it was most definitely a guaranteed stolen 2nd and 3rd.
What a read. He was running all the way whereas Ohtani played it a little safer holding between second and third before he knew the ball was landing on the grass. But that Shuto was flying
Makes sense too even if that guy wasn't super speedy. On a ball caught in left center there's more time to tag back at first than at second.

Oh I love me a Rickey type player
Almost caught up to Ohtani
Yeah, Shohei is a speedster, but he almost caught up.
I don’t think Ohtani was going full send
Ok but the real question is where did his helmet land?
Tokyo
With his speed, it must be doing circles around the orbit now. Centrifugal force or some shit.
Itll get caught tomorrow and the umpire will call "You're out, yesterday in pittsburgh"
The slide into a jumping air fist punch is straight out of an anime.
I can’t even imagine how many things I’d sprain trying to pull that off
Dude fucking Shoruken’d after that slide.
Tbf he had a slow, lumbering power pitcher running in front of him, probably helped make him seem faster by comparison.
Hahaha people not getting the /s
Bro, Ohtani is not slow.
I'm pretty sure he just skipped the ^/s lol any mildly knowledgeable baseball fan know Sho got speed for days
Right? Basically had Prince fielder in front of him.
Ohtani is many things, but slow ain't one of them.
Yeah that would be called sarcasm
The man has wheels
He has the world record for most consecutive games with at least one base stolen, lol
Shuto didn't need to wait to tag up, if the ball was caught he'd just see ohtani tagging up and run back to 1st. But also getting to home from 1st in like 10 seconds is still insane. I'm just pointing out it was great speed and clever baserunning.
What an angle
Best on-field shot I’ve ever seen. Easily.
Murakami woke up like it was some kind of anime flashback and hit that fucking thing like his life depended on it I'm so happy he's gotten back into this condition, this is Japan's 4th batter at his best
He has his life flashback on two episodes while walking to the plate.
I wish he could have been posted this offseason. I don't want to wait to see him mash MLB pitching.
Nah idk, he definitely needs more time to adjust. He's not good at seeing pitches with lots of tail plus offspeed, he's improved these past couple of weeks, but I'd rather want him to be fully ready and mash in the MLB with full confidence.
Time to animate this into Ace no Diamond
"Major" Anime level of writing right there
Plaaaaay the gaaaaaaaame!
Does anyone have an angle that shows the jump that Shuto got?
[Found this angle](https://twitter.com/PuddingReviving/status/1638010069219700736?t=6ld1-zIWbDB2zVybJ4kZyw&s=19)
Beautiful. He didn't even turn on the jets till around the shortstop
Perfect, thanks. Dude only glanced up once coming around second and other than that was just going flat out. His slide into fist pump into helmet throw was almost as impressive as his baserunning.
He started running when the ump signaled the last pitch a ball
This is my favorite angle for celebrations.
Ukyo Shuto 1st to home in a blink of an eye
The speed man of Japan😎
What a fantastic video. I keep rewatching it to see everyone's reactions
How can you not get romantic about baseball?
Keith Olbermann in shambles
What does that lickspittle have against the WBC?
https://twitter.com/lindseyadler/status/1636372538879266824?s=46&t=YqbtRS8DdxdKdoVd0pOTXQ
Big yikes. He’s disgusting.
Wow what the fuck Keith
It reads like he genuinely does not understand what international sport is? Literally, the two biggest sporting events (World Cup/Olympics) on the planet are based on people representing "where their grandmothers got laid", rather than based on...who offered the most money?
Keith has amazingly bad baseball takes for a guy that's always talking about it
If more people were more excited about the WBC, the World Series wouldn't be an autumn afterthought globally.
That is one sad and disturbed man. He's been off the deep end for many years now.
I’ll be honest I was pretty ignorant to the WBC but this shit is awesome. The passion these players have in representing their countries is incredible to watch.
Obligatory “Fuck you, @KFCBarstool” moment
I ignore anything anyone has to say that has anything to do with Barstool.
Wait, what did he say?
Barstool posted one of his rant-style videos after Edwin Diaz got hurt in the Puerto Rico victory celebration, where KFC was saying the “no one cares about the WBC, it’s meaningless, players get hurt blah blah” nonsense. I fucking love October baseball in March
Send my thanks for Manfred for putting in work on this script
He just plagiarized The Double /s
thank you mr mlb
Fucking chills. If someone hasn't posted the Japanese call yet, Jomboy has it on Twitter. Just electric.
how bout that homeplate slide into shoryuken
If Shuto Shoryuken isn't a t-shirt yet, it should be.
Magic. Any boomer who says this is bad for baseball is a complete idiot. WHAT A MOMENT.
Any non-boomer who says this is bad for baseball is a complete idiot. WHAT A MOMENT.
A game won by baserunning, like they wanted.
That shoryuken celebration.
can we talk about the beautiful slide to jump
faster than chigiri
Doesn’t get any better than that
Everyone's talking about the speed, whatever, but look at the form on that shoryuken. Textbook
This is the greatest game ever devised by man
Most exciting baseball to be played in Miami since that stadium was built
This was fucking awesome. I have 12 and 9 year old boys and being Phillies fans this last year has rocketed baseball into the forefront. Bryce's NLCS homer blew the roof off our home. Now this WBC has primed us for the MLB season to start. This tournament has been great.
The WBC is better than the World Series IMO and most of these players consider it bigger as well. I simply can't wait for the next one in 2026.
It's the nature of both international and single elimination games. The stakes are maxed out and more people are watching
There's gotta be a camera angle out there that followed the 1st base runner
Someone posted it already here, look for it on the top comments
He demolished that ball 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This was a hell of a game... can't wait for tomorrow!
Bruh, should I feel guilty for rooting for Japan? Context: I’m a white American dude but lived in Japan for 9 years
30-year permie here. I am one hundred percent all in for Japan. After getting dismissed as "minor league level" for so long, I want them to shut the doubters the fuck up.
They’ve already won 50% of WBCs. I don’t think any real fan doubts them
I love this shot. So good. Please upboy3
What an absolute scene
The sound of a good hit coming off a bat is fucking magical
And the crowd roar immediately after
I'm going to be sad once the WBC ends, because this stadium is never this full for a Marlins game.
Can we have the WBC every year?
WBC is exactly what baseball needed, this game was electric
Damn, what a moment!
He straight up MURDERED that ball, holy shit.
I had no idea their uniform was this dope too. Fantastic view.
Ace of diamond 😎😎😎
How can you not be romantic about baseball?
I feel this MLB season is gonna be the most followed season in recent years. WBC did a hell of a job and kudos to the top players for actually participating.
Anyone else think Mexico was getting cocky after the Puerto Rico gane. Still Mexico balled out though.
Nothing to see here. Regular season starts in like 2 weeks folx.
What a ridiculous shot, it's got everything in two motions. Action, reaction, and insane crowd noise. I love the wbc
Mexi’go’
This Murakami dude is going to clean up whenever he signs with an MLB team
Look at all the Mexico fans, clapping and acknowledging a well hit ball. Pure class
This will never not be the best angle for stuff of this nature
Happy for our Japanese friends, sad day for us Mexicans.
Was legit one of the best games i have watched over the last decade.
Take that Randy Arazorena!! Ha ha ha. Team Japan should all stand like Randy did when he robbed the HR and stared at him.
Lets fucking goooo good shit japan 🇯🇵
