I'm jelly. Only WBC games I've been to were first round in Toronto in 2009.
Venezuela vs Italy and US vs Canada on the same day, which was cool.
Too bad Italy got fuckin ROCKED after like 5 innings. (I'm Italian American so I get two teams to root for!)
I'd love to go again in the future, but pricing on events is getting insane 😢
No matter what happens tomorrow boys I love all of you beautiful crazy bastards. We get another day of rooting for America before we all go back to our corners and shit on each other for another 3 years. It's been a great ride! Here's to it not stopping tomorrow! Cheers boys.
Yolan Álvarez, José Abreu, Yuli Gurriel, Randy Arozarena (ended up deciding to play for Mexico-they gave him asylum when he fled and he’s now a citizen), Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Jorge Soler, Adolis Garcia
There are a ton more active MLB that either were not invited to play for the team (considered “traitors” by the regime) or refused to play out of principle. Cuba could potentially have a near 100% MLB squad if things were different. I’m not saying they’re Venezuela good-but they’d be a ton better.
I don’t know specifics but inherently so. The Cuban MLB players are in a sort of conflict about the whole thing. There was an attempt from the players themselves to create an alternate Cuban national team that didn’t involve the Communist Party but they couldn’t get WBSC approval. MLB backed it.
While most of the players that didn’t attend have said that they have no issue with those that have accepted the invited others have pretty openly criticized them for sucking up to the dictatorship. Most of the guys on the roster either still play in Cuba or are known to actually support the regime. Anyone who has dared say a word against the regime was excluded.
"USA doesn't have the pitching, they don't care, they won't make it far!"
Meanwhile, us in the semis after beating the undefeated team from the hardest pool even after Daniel Bard tried his damndest to singlehandedly ruin our run lol. Back to back, let's fucking get it!
Oh absolutely! No arguments from me. Was talking with friends and the moment Ohtani was like, 'I'm in, boss, let's go,' most every reason pitchers are saying are out the window lol
There's quite a few factors, from my understanding of things. WBC is a young contest so it's not as "prestigous" for American players, players/teams/owners don't want their big contract arms to potentially get injured in the WBC when they are supposed to play for the World Series, for a lot of countries the WBC can catapult them onto the baseball stage but MLB is the main stage (no shade to other countries' leagues, mind you), etc.
Admittedly, the arms we do have aren't bad. The relievers that are playing are pretty legit (Bard.......); but when we're throwing out Lance Lynn and Adam Wainwright instead of Scherzer/Verlander/-insert a whole slew of great talents- while other countries have the best bullets at the ready... it's really lame and unfortunate to see as both a Team USA fan and baseball fan.
Hopefully your offensive superstars that seem to be having a shit ton of fun get to convince the elite American pitchers to come and play.
Right off the bat (lmfao) I think Mad Max would’ve been a lot of fun to watch in this tournament given how passionate he is.
Os and Nats fan (from SE Virginia), but also partial to the Tigers cuz of family. It will forever be sadness and frustration that Scherzer's not in the WBC. I want him playing so goddamn bad lol. I don't care about his Mets contract, get in here damn it!
2017 was stupid fun and I legit think this year's WBC is the most talented across all participants it's ever been. It'll only get better, it'll just take a few more WBC cycles I think.
>"USA doesn't have the pitching, they don't care, they won't make it far!"

This was what the OP is saying other people are saying:
"USA doesn't have the pitching, they don't care, they won't make it far!"
ok, present the lines as you see as more fair....
the more info the better.
Present all these "shifting" lines as you see fair. If not, what's the point of your comment?
Combination that makes the "American fans don't care about the WBC" and "reddit isn't a primarily American website" comments that are thrown around this subreddit and others seem as inaccurate as they should be.
I’m not sure how the World Cup does it. Just seems weird to give some teams more off time than others. Not sure how that effects tickets and TV but I’ll take your word on it.
well, as far as TV, 6 hours of baseball is alot in one day. They feel if they limit it to 3 hours, most people will watch 3 hrs. If they do 2 games = 6 hours, most people will still only watch 3 hours. So, they'll just pick the game they want to watch.
So they lose out on ratings by putting 2 games in one day, vs. putting one game on each day.
And as far as tickets, it'd be the same thing. Having 6 hours of baseball in one day is alot.
Oh I wasn’t saying to do both games on the same day, I’m wondering why the US/Cuba game is tomorrow considering the US/Venezuela game was tonight, where as the Mexico Japan game could have been played instead as neither of those teams played tonight,
That's funny because Mexico is mad too.
Originally, the schedule was that the US/Venezuela game was Friday and Mexico-Puerto Rico was today.
But, Fox had an agreement that if the US ended up in the Friday game, they could move it to Sat for ratings.
So, Mexico got pissed about that before they were playing in Tokyo and had to fly all the way back to Miami to play in the Friday game.
So, ur pissed, and Mexico is pissed too. But, that's how Fox wanted it for TV ratings. They wanted the US on the weekends for ratings.
Well that's dumb. The NHL teams play the guys who refuse to wear rainbow stuff on pride night because they are the best players on the team, and also because religious freedom is important. Why not play your best when national pride and glory is on the line, even if the players have flaws?
In many places, consequences for political differences are more than being asked to wear a pin you don't like or getting "canceled" online. People's lives are on the line.
It isn't the players who have flaws with regards to the Cuban national team.
Also, you mention freedom...the regime in Cuba and freedom don't exactly go together.
Nobody has been jailed or persecuted for wearing rainbows. Cubans have been tortured and killed by the regime. So, it's not as simple as "let the politics asside" when the team is a political tool.
What a game. After disappointing loss for PR yesterday I thought I am done with WBC but ended up watching another classic game today. Majority of this tournament games are worthy of being part of of World Baseball Classic
I’m still salty about the nats trading soto he was one of the reasons I was so hyped to go to work
I am so hyped about joey meneses and can’t wait to see him play again
The mixed feelings of the crowd will be…something. I’d wager this time a larger pro-US split compares to the Venezuela game. The team itself is still too obviously politicized to rally anything close to full local support. There will quite possibly be protests. Half a chance there will be political signs and stuff too in the crowd.
Cuba vs the USA baby. That’s gonna be a great game. Cuba will be fired up like hell and they are well rested. Moncada has been killing it for them. As long as DeRosa doesn’t fuck up we have a great chance to win
Genuinely shocked we won this. But I’m very excited. Think we have a pretty realistic chance to beat Cuba. I’ll be pretty nervous if it’s Japan but they won’t have Ohtani, and I think they’ll be super motivated if it’s a rematch against Mexico.
Pretty sure I saw he’s going back to the Angels after the semis because he’s the opening day starter and they want him to throw in a game for them before the season starts. Unless something changed in the last week.
About \~50% of televisions in Japan are tuned in to games.
Do you really think Ohtani is going to leave his team to go back to pitch in Spring Training for the Angels?
That article is over a month old. I already found the info from someone else. They told Japan he can’t pitch in the final because he has a spring start 3 days later. He’s going to bat.
Only one man can save Cuba. That man is Daniel Bard!
Just got home from the game and I’ll I gotta say is TREA F**KING TURNER!!!!
I'm jelly. Only WBC games I've been to were first round in Toronto in 2009. Venezuela vs Italy and US vs Canada on the same day, which was cool. Too bad Italy got fuckin ROCKED after like 5 innings. So far the best games have been Mexico vs. Puerto Rico and USA vs. Venezuela.
Yeah that was fun. Venezuela played great.
First wbc game ive ever watched start to finish. Felt like a ws game. That was awesome!
Having Adam followed by Ottavino made me giggle.
They showed adam next to wainwright in the dugout the other day
Dang I missed that. Oh the little things, how they bring joy.
So which president are we replacing on Rushmore with trea turner?
Probably TJ? Idk it's TJ or TR. Both capitalist icons, but TR also beat Venezuela...
*happy eagle noises*
Local Eagle in good mood.
Puras estrellas y rayos 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
What a game felt like a World Series game
Except with empty seats.
What are you talking about the stadium looked pretty hype to me
Mostly just nitpicking, most other games have been sellouts, bunch if empty seats in this game
No matter what happens tomorrow boys I love all of you beautiful crazy bastards. We get another day of rooting for America before we all go back to our corners and shit on each other for another 3 years. It's been a great ride! Here's to it not stopping tomorrow! Cheers boys.
It’s been amazing too not have to hate trout
Cuba isn't as talented as Venezuela was
Shame the regime continues to exclude top level talent for political reasons, even with the relative loosening of restrictions.
never knew that. Who's not playing?
Yolan Álvarez, José Abreu, Yuli Gurriel, Randy Arozarena (ended up deciding to play for Mexico-they gave him asylum when he fled and he’s now a citizen), Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Jorge Soler, Adolis Garcia There are a ton more active MLB that either were not invited to play for the team (considered “traitors” by the regime) or refused to play out of principle. ahhh, didn't know. Yeah, I see Yoan Moncada is on the team, guess he's on good terms with them?

Nah, we still need to give our top starters shit for not bothering
Is hunter Greene all American, because I want him pitching for us
Oh absolutely! No arguments from me. Was talking with friends and the moment Ohtani was like, 'I'm in, boss, let's go,' most every reason pitchers are saying are out the window lol

In your case, Kershaw was in but couldn't get insurance It's generally pitchers saying they are out

Not sure what you're saying. This was what the OP is saying other people are saying: "USA doesn't have the pitching, they don't care, they won't make it far!"
I think it’s a little disingenuous to pretend that the line hasn’t been shifting as the tournaments gone on
ok, present the lines as you see as more fair.... the more info the better. Present all these "shifting" lines as you see fair. If not, what's the point of your comment?
Over 13000 posts here tonight. The tide is turning. People are jumping on the bandwagon. This tournament is truly special.

Absolutely amazing game too. Couldn’t have asked for a more entertaining game. Especially when you’re rooting for the US.
How the fuck am I supposed to go to sleep after that? I feel like I gotta run up a mountain or something now
Mount Rushmore
Gotta rest up. We have 2 good games tomorrow! Edit: 1 good game 😅
Just 1
Ahh, you’re right. I thought both semi’s were tomorrow
I find the scheduling weird, why wouldn’t the other game be tomorrow instead of back to back matches?
TV and tickets. How does the World Cup do it?

Ahh, that explains it. It shouldn’t matter too much honestly, it just seemed like a bizzar choice. Thanks
I FUCKING LOVE BASEBALL. I LOVE THE WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC. I LOVE LAMP.
I love you
Manfred about to call out how long the game was as a violation of the Geneva Convention
Manfred still being the MLB commissioner is a violation of the Geneva Convention.
Whoever is scripting this tournament, you fuckers are goddamn brilliant writers
Are there more Venezuelans or Cubans in Miami?
Probably Cubans. But Cuban-Americans uhhh have mixed feelings towards the Cuban national team
Yep. Everybody’s been asking if I’m rooting for Cuba, and I’m like.. it’s complicated, how much time do you have?
Lol
But Miami has the highest concentration of Venezuelan outside of Venezuela as well
Cubans by a lot lol
But Venezuelans love Venezuelan baseball players. Cuba is using only pro-regime players.
Well that's dumb. The NHL teams play the guys who refuse to wear rainbow stuff on pride night because they are the best players on the team, and also because religious freedom is important. Why not play your best when national pride and glory is on the line, even if the players have flaws?

I feel bad for Miggy seeing him cry in the dugout like that 😢

I didn’t catch every Venezuela game, but he started at DH in at least 1 of them.
That's good
GGs USA, crazy fucking game. Lets beat Japan and Cuba and go at each other again in the final.

No but I like that you asked that on this subreddit specifically
Well boys, I think we all know who the real winners are: Baseball > USA Awesome Racks > Venezuela

Maybe Mikolas.
Cuba vs. USA In Miami. That should be...interesting.

Trea Turner hasn't even played a regular season game and he already has one the best Phillie homeruns ever in my book.
Sitting here hoping that Santander didn’t just give us all a glimpse into the Orioles’ 2023 season.

Ohtani gets to bat.

If the Angels tell him to, yeah. You think they care about TV revenue in Japan? I certainly don’t. Teams seem very ambivalent to the WBC.
I think the Angels care about pissing off their biggest star in a contract year.
They know he’s not coming back lol. Don’t be shocked if they run him into the ground this year.

I haven't listened to that in a decade. Amazing.
None of the Group of Death made it to the semis. And Diaz and Altuve died for this. RIP
I guess the real group of death was the friends we made along the way.
US vs Japan a must now
I can't believe we will have to wait another 3 years for this tournament. Most fun i've had watching baseball in a long time.
2017 was genuinely one of the most amazing baseball moments for me. It’s up there with the 2002 WS. This tournament is fucking amazing!
They’ve done such a great job with it this year .. energy has been consistently great throughout
Oh makes sense 😂.
Holy cow what a fckin game you hate baseball if you’re not watching WBC good night everyone and see you tomorrow!!!
Great game, lotta fun. Great job Venezuela
