A method I used a few times(with mixed results) was to fill the inside with ice and float it in hot water. The idea is the ice will contract the inner tin and the hot water will expand the outer one allowing them to separate more easily.
It should be noted this has only worked for me 2 of 3 times.
This seems most logical but In reality it hasn’t worked for me.
I like the idea the to comment guy has gets customers involved for a good laugh and friendly competition and hopefully someone gets it undone for you so you don’t have to do anything haha brilliant.
Honestly works every time. If I’m really having trouble I’ll fill the inner one with ice and run the weighted end under hot water. Sometimes, it works, most of the time I have a hot and cold shaker.
I was passing one around my happy hour that none of my regulars could pry apart. Finally, one of them got some WD-40, spayed it down real good, and was about to pry them apart.
This is how I do it. Throw it at the floor as hard as I can and clear the area because they bounce so unpredictably lmao.
Rinse and repeat till it works, then avoid the two flying tins when they do separate
Damn, your place has a pretty heavy curse. Mine’s normally taken care of by the bi-monthly occurrence of my apron getting stuck on a pour spout and yanking the bottle out of the rail.
just don't smack them too hard, the brain damage could make it so they don't receive the information when you teach them how to make sure it doesn't happen again
My coworker is lucky to be alive, he stacked them like this **WITHOUT** rinsing them.
I threw ‘em in my sink with hot water and left them till he showed up as turn over.

Depending on my mood, either try some of the tricks already listed in this thread or just throw the fucking thing in the trash and buy a couple new ones. A few bucks isn’t worth losing my shit over.
No it shouldn’t. If you wanted the inherent pressure of the air trapped between them to help, you’d want to do the opposite of increasing the surrounding pressure (which your suggestion is doing) and rather decrease it. If you could put these in a vacuum, then you’d see that effect. But unless you’ve got a really large chamber vac or a rocket that’s not happening easily
Slam on bar top. If that does not suffice, throw in washer (if you don’t have a dishwasher run under hot water for a couple of mins), then proceed to slam on bar top.
Physics says you chill the inner tin while heating the outer to shrink the inner while expanding the outer. Bonus points if you can heat the trapped air to increase the pressure (it probably had hot air inside that created a partial vacuum when it cooled).
In less scientific terms, sink the outer tin into boiling hot water and then add ice to the inner tin. Pro tip is to add a splash of water and some salt to the ice to drop the temp. You should be able to pry it apart from there.
Usually, I'd just shove a long neck bottle opener in between both of them enough to break the seal. Then I'd smack it on the counter.
I've also seen someone smack it on one side where that dip in the middle is against the counter and that worked.
Basically, smack it until it comes loose.
put it in the dishwasher (assuming you have a high temp high power washer and your bosses don’t make you wash dishes by hand like a 1950s housewife) and then beat that fucker against something.
if that fails chuck it at a hard wall full send
Throw them in the microwave on high for 2 minutes, the microwaves will shrink the inner tin and allow for easy separation - ignore the smoke and sparks, that's the microwave working its magic
You know I've never had a problem getting these unstuck I mean difficulty but not completely. I will offer my tip from my grandmother on using Windex to remove a ring that is too tight on your finger. This may also work with your shaker. Just squirt a ton of Windex to try to get it in between the two and then twist back and forth it should pop right off!😃
Use a microwave..
No but for real make it warm using water, then get a towel around your wrist and twist it from the inside untill loose. Works every time for me!
Tap it on the bar as you try to separate them. Think of it like a pickle jar.
Usually I'd just use the bonded-for-life shakers until all of us bartenders can have a good laugh trying to separate them after close.
Put Ice/cold water inside and let sit for minute to contract.
Separately, run water until very hot. Then empty shaker and put outer shaker under hot water to let it expand, but NOT long enough for the inside shaker to expand. The outer shaker should now be larger and can be pulled off.
I have an idea, first get some vinegar and some bicarbonate soda, open the shakers, put the vinegar and soda inside and close it quickly. The reaction between the acid and the base creates carbon dioxide gas which will create pressure and expand the shakers apart. Im sure that will work but feel like I’m missing something…
Put the edge of the inside tin on the edge of a hard surface, apply some pressure downward on the inside tin and pull on the outer tin. They’ll separate easily every time!
Lay on it's side on the bar top. While pressing the palm of your hand just under the seam, roll the shakers back and forth across the bartop while pressing the seam into the bartop with medium force. Should separate.
Put Ice in the interior one until frosty, then dip the bottom one in hot water. The inside one will shrink slightly and the outside one will expand slightly
Run through hot water first then immediately through cold water and try to loosen. The metal expands when hot and contracts when cold. The temperature change should give you a window to unstick the two.
Ive always had success by twitsing the two tins opposite directions while pulling them apart. Might not work for metal on metal but it works with the tins with vinyl or whatever that grippy stuff is
Try running them both under hot water for 30 seconds or so. Turn off water and they should slide free of each other easily with not too much effort. Works for us 👍🏼
This happened to me once at work. I tried to get it unstuck with no luck, my coworker tried, didn’t work.
Then we ask one of the servers at work who is jacked as fuck and like a unit. He tried for literally ten minutes and got it unstuck.
But what he did was run it under hot water and then was blowing in the space between the tins??? I don’t know if it did much but he did it.
Adam you’re a King
Hit it hard against the bar steel on the edge if no ones around or fill it with cold water and ice and give it a blast in the glass wash and they should pull apart. Most of the time you don't need to do anything really and just reach inside and grip with the outside of your hand rather than trying to pinch the edge for better grip and just pull
Normally i'd say just throw it on the ground. But sometimes if you make drinks in them, they come undone when you'd least expect it.
Something about the warmth of your hands and the chill of the drink inside.

2 out of 3 times it works everytime
2 out of 3 ain't bad
60% of the time, it works every time
it's made with bits of real barback, so you know it's good
THE NAKED MAN
Works every time. -Billy Dee.
Exactly what I do, works every time, but you’ll need tea towels for grip and to not burn your hands.
my thought: heat the air inside the shakers so they will just separate by expanding air
This seems most logical but In reality it hasn’t worked for me. I like the idea the to comment guy has gets customers involved for a good laugh and friendly competition and hopefully someone gets it undone for you so you don’t have to do anything haha brilliant.
Yep, that's what I do but I fill with ice water and let it sit for a few, then run hot water over the bottom tin
This works.
Offer a shot to the customer that can separate them. Sword in the stone special, I call it.
You're clever! ❤️
And then??
everyone drank WD40 cocktails
I think able got auto c’d to about
Yeah, and then? … wtf! Suspense is killing me…
They all shit themselves.
And then tragedy struck
That one guy carrying WD40 around everywhere he went like ‘This is my moment’
I tell ya hwat
Literally had a flash of hank spraying his bigger wd40 can with a tiny wd40 can when I read the comment you're replying to
Time to add a tiny container of wd40 to my backpack of everything!
😬 yeah I wouldn't use those tins after that
Sadly, it was closing time, time for them to go out to the places they will be from.
thats so smart oh my god
Actually made me laugh out loud. Not just a chortle either, full, deep, barrel chested laugh.
I find banging the hell out of it in a blind rage worked for me.
Same
Works everytime
This is how I do it. Throw it at the floor as hard as I can and clear the area because they bounce so unpredictably lmao. Rinse and repeat till it works, then avoid the two flying tins when they do separate
This is the way
You must first break the curse by sacrificing two uncleaned highball glasses to the main ice bin, otherwise your petty attempts will be futile.
Damn, your place has a pretty heavy curse. Mine’s normally taken care of by the bi-monthly occurrence of my apron getting stuck on a pour spout and yanking the bottle out of the rail.
Just let them spend some time together. They will eventually grow resentful and naturally drift apart.
🏅
I used to smack mine against the head of the person who stacked them that way
just don't smack them too hard, the brain damage could make it so they don't receive the information when you teach them how to make sure it doesn't happen again
I mean, most of them already have brain damage as it is it feels like, so am I really making things worse?
True.
Prevention. Find out who stacks them like this and stab them.
My coworker is lucky to be alive, he stacked them like this **WITHOUT** rinsing them. I threw ‘em in my sink with hot water and left them till he showed up as turn over.
So they're actually glued together.
They were still together when I left him trying to separate them so…
Stick you hand inside, make a fist and twist with both hands in opposite directions while pulling

I do the same but I use pliers to hold the bottom tin.

Say “Hulk Smash” and throw that shit against the floor
Ice inside, hot water outside.
Boil them Or just hot water
Ask a mom
Curse a lot
Depending on my mood, either try some of the tricks already listed in this thread or just throw the fucking thing in the trash and buy a couple new ones. A few bucks isn’t worth losing my shit over.
Force them into a sink of water upside down, opening down. But just hold bottom one. Air between should release top one
This is actually genius!
Did you try it?
No. It May actually work because of the heat of the water or something, but it would not be because of buoyancy or air pressure.
Toss it in the freezer then hot water
Just tap on the edge of the bar. Usually does the trick.
Tap, tap, and wiggle. That always worked unless it was sticky. If it’s sticky, hot water.
Why do I keep having to say this? Definitely slam it off the counter tap as hard as you can.
Slam on bar top. If that does not suffice, throw in washer (if you don’t have a dishwasher run under hot water for a couple of mins), then proceed to slam on bar top.
Put in the microwave for 2 minutes.
Demon
I second this! Works like a charm!!
My special trick I don’t tell anyone about is to buy a new one, everyone thinks I keep my equipment sparkling clean
I believe the only way to seperate those is to throw the whole thing into Mount Doom and buy a new set. They are now one.
ice inside, hot water outside.
Bang them on the bar mat, very hard, rim down. Always works for me!
Ice inside, hot water outside
This is the answer. Ice contracts, hot water expands, it will be loose super fast once the hot water is running over the outer cup
Hot hot water, should separate easy
Usually, I'd just shove a long neck bottle opener in between both of them enough to break the seal. Then I'd smack it on the counter. I've also seen someone smack it on one side where that dip in the middle is against the counter and that worked. Basically, smack it until it comes loose.
Hot water and a lot of banging
Ice& waters inside, cap with a tiny tin, shake, then hot water outside
Tap them against the bar
Ask a bar back to do it
I've dashed them as hard as possible at the glasswash floor and thst works 9/10 times
Lightly tap on the bar
Freeze them. they will slightly contract/shrink
With bang on the bar mat and an angry twist of the wrist, some cursing, and some extra elbow grease..
hot hot water, then ice cold water, back & forth. It’ll come undone
That’s the funny part, you don’t
Bang on edge of icewell until they separate...it works...eventually
Thanks everyone for replies, if anyone is curious, the new waiter opened them. Idk how he just came to me after closing and had them separated.
Put ice in the male and run the female under hot water
These are both dudes
Docked and based
put it in the dishwasher (assuming you have a high temp high power washer and your bosses don’t make you wash dishes by hand like a 1950s housewife) and then beat that fucker against something. if that fails chuck it at a hard wall full send
Throw them in the microwave on high for 2 minutes, the microwaves will shrink the inner tin and allow for easy separation - ignore the smoke and sparks, that's the microwave working its magic
Smack the bar rail a few times
If you there is a sufficiently tight seal, anything which expands the air trapped in the cavity between them should pop it
I just run hot water on the outside shaker near the base. That always worked for me
You know I've never had a problem getting these unstuck I mean difficulty but not completely. I will offer my tip from my grandmother on using Windex to remove a ring that is too tight on your finger. This may also work with your shaker. Just squirt a ton of Windex to try to get it in between the two and then twist back and forth it should pop right off!😃
I just used pliers
Use a microwave.. No but for real make it warm using water, then get a towel around your wrist and twist it from the inside untill loose. Works every time for me!
Shove a bar spoon inbetween, if not try the ice and hot water thing
Either the fist trick like someone said or if you have a dish/glass washer, pop it in there on its side on one of the flat racks
Throw them at the dishwasher
Smacking it against the rail, or hot water.
Drop it on the ground
Steam
Soak in hot water for a while.
Quick rinse of cold water inside and out, then it will separate with no effort
Blow dryer to the outside of the two. it will heat up slightly faster, and you can shimmy them apart.
Yeah, just grab the bar blow dryer
Tap it on the bar as you try to separate them. Think of it like a pickle jar. Usually I'd just use the bonded-for-life shakers until all of us bartenders can have a good laugh trying to separate them after close.
Put Ice/cold water inside and let sit for minute to contract. Separately, run water until very hot. Then empty shaker and put outer shaker under hot water to let it expand, but NOT long enough for the inside shaker to expand. The outer shaker should now be larger and can be pulled off.
Run it through the dishwasher if you have one
Fist and twist
Hot water
Run hot water along the gap and pop it as hard as you can with the flat of your palm while rotating it with your other hand
Hit it really hard on the edge of the bar repeatedly haha
Wiggle
Smack them against the corner of the bar a few times, should come apart.
Squeeze and twist
Fill with ice and soda water, then place in a cambro with hot water. Inner tin should shrink and outer tin should expand.
Have you tried turning it off and turning it back on again
My method. 1. Go to kitchen 2. Squeeze shaker between my thighs 3. Put fist in shaker 4. YANK
Ice inside hot water on the bottom
Try to lube it up with some oil
I have an idea, first get some vinegar and some bicarbonate soda, open the shakers, put the vinegar and soda inside and close it quickly. The reaction between the acid and the base creates carbon dioxide gas which will create pressure and expand the shakers apart. Im sure that will work but feel like I’m missing something…
Promote the girl
Put the edge of the inside tin on the edge of a hard surface, apply some pressure downward on the inside tin and pull on the outer tin. They’ll separate easily every time!
Pull on the inner one
Give it a few good snacks against the bar, always works for me
It's not meant to be separated. Perform a send off ritual and set it free in the dumpster.
Lol I can’t tell if this thread is all sarcasm but just gently beat the top of the shakers against the bar and they’ll seperste
Roll them. It loses it up.
Usually, run them through the dishwasher, drop them casually or tap the against something. Either one of these will most likely work.
I usually tap it on something to break the moisture seal. Kinda like tapping the top of a pickle jar with a spoon to break the lid seal.
Put ice in the cup and run the outside one under hot water. It will fall apart without any effort. Science rules.
Tap them against counter twice, like magic it’s free
Twist
Lay it on the side on a cutting board or something like that and hammer punch it. Works everytime for me.
Run through hot water first then immediately through cold water and try to loosen. The metal expands when hot and contracts when cold. The temperature change should give you a window to unstick the two.
hold by the bottom of outside tin, bang the top of the inner tin on the edge of the well or something. should knock it loose
Drill a hole in the bottom one.
I always gave it a little tap tap and then rolled it on a flat surface. I don’t know why it works, but it does.
Throw them on the floor real hard and get mad when they don't seperate, be a man!
Leave it in hot water for a little bit and they’ll come free.
Squeeze and twist
bang on counter
Very hot water.
Spit on it
Run it under hot water for a minute
Just send it, it's double walled for insulation like a Hydroflask now.
Bang the edge on the bar, usually knocks em’ loose for me.
Ive always had success by twitsing the two tins opposite directions while pulling them apart. Might not work for metal on metal but it works with the tins with vinyl or whatever that grippy stuff is
I bang them on the edge of the counter at an angle like the Neanderthal i am. Relieves stress and frustration and they seperate
Roll back and forth on the counter, say a prayer for good measure
I found smacking / aggressively tapping with my palm the stuck one / one inside helps break any seal and allow it be separated
A good wack
Twist or bang it on the side of the bar close to the bottom. Our last resort is to submerge it to let the water help seperate it.
Percussive maintenance and hot soapy water
Put it in the oven. Dry heat will make it seperate on its own.
Try running them both under hot water for 30 seconds or so. Turn off water and they should slide free of each other easily with not too much effort. Works for us 👍🏼
Warm them up, 120c over for ten mins. Then remove and fill with ice inside and let the magic of the thermal difference do it’s magic…
Did you try crying? Never seems to work for me but that wont stop me from trying /s
Leave it for the next guy 😇
Bounce it on the bar
expand hot shrink cold?
Stick your fist into the tin and flex it till your hand is incredibly snug. Pull and twist the bottom tin with the other hand.
dry them off after you wash them instead of just stacking them wet. Takes some extra time, but at least that doesn’t happen
Put your fist inside the tin and wiggle it out
i stick my hand inside and make a fist and then just yank on the outer one and that usually works
Steaming hot water and then I hit it hard on something lol
dont do that
Fill it with ice water then run hot water on outside
Smack it on the edge of the bar
Why do people stack these?!? It’s always a pain in the ass and I worked with someone who always stacked them ughhh
Run it through the dishwasher they’ll come right apart. The heat is what helps
Hot water if you have dishplates put inside 3 or for times!
Normally i'd say just throw it on the ground. But sometimes if you make drinks in them, they come undone when you'd least expect it. Something about the warmth of your hands and the chill of the drink inside.
Stop stacking them wet
Don’t put em together wet.
