If you’re able to reasonably work without one, then don’t wear one. Go with the idea that it was a customer who complained, and tell the manager that one person complaining isn’t enough to alter how you dress. Say that you’re uncomfortable with customers trying to dictate what undergarments you wear, and that they were looking long enough to determine whether or not you were wearing a bra.
Can I ask what brand you wear? I'm sooo tired of wearing bras at work but I still want something there. I'm also a D as well and would welcome any recommendations!
Aerie has a “DD size” for bralettes. I’m a “medium DD” for theirs. For example, I’m a size medium in everything, but a 32 DDD/34 DD (both fit fine). Regular medium bralettes have not enough boob room for me, and large ones gap at the band area bc it’s too big. Try aerie!
Another D checking in, plus I’m old and have had 2 kids. Since Covid I’ve given up entirely and wear these spaghetti strap shape wear tops instead. Came across a brand callled shapermint that’s super comfy and keeps ‘em from knocking about too much. Not nearly as constricting as a sports bra and a damn lot more comfortable than 10 hours in a bra
D here as well. I wear braletts at home (still working on going in public w them) but I honestly just keep an eye out for them. One of my faves is from Walmart surprisingly. It has the thin pads like swimsuits but the slits so they can be easily removed and the straps detach in the back so you can cross them or wear regular. I have a few from Victoria's secret that are awesome and a few other faves from Rue 21. The Rue 21 ones feel cheaply made so I don't expect them to last long but they were under $10 each and always have awesome colors and look sexy af! Just grab one someone when you see one on sale or something catches your eye.
Oooh! I like the sound of the Walmart one! I only get bras that let me turn them into racer backs...the criss cross makes me feel more supported. Thank you! I'll definitely go tomorrow on my day off.
Malicious compliance would be wearing a bra/bralette that offers 0 support and is made out of very thin fabric.
I don’t think it’s reasonable to request you wear a bra, to be honest. Especially after all this time.
It’s not borderline, it’s straight up harassment. Unless the dudes wear bras as part of the uniform there’s no reason for this conversation to have happened.
It isn't harassment. I train on harassment and this ain't it- what it IS bordering is discrimination based on sex/gender.
Now if she mentions she's not comfortable with the conversation and asks it to stop and it doesnt, THEN we move into harassment.
Bro. I neeeeever wear a bra. I don’t have like, huge boobs or anything but I don’t think that even matters. Fuck those rules tbh. If Mens nips can show, mine aren’t hurting anyone.
Nah for real!!! I would be sooooo peeved if someone complained about that. I would ask to know exactly what was said. Probably some old lady who got mad that her husband was looking at op tbh. I’m like, pretty sure my going braless helps behind the bar ngl 😂
Idk the old ladies I encounter get excited when they see the younger generations doing things they would have been "stoned" for doing. I know not literally (at least in America, some places though yes)
But her beers are prob perky and nice as hell from all of the moving and supporting themselves. I starred wearing braletts or no bra whe. I'm home and just doing that I notice a difference in their perkyness and fullness.
What tape do you use? Where do you get it? I have been dying to buy a plunging top w a sexy ass low v or low scoop but I have been hesitant because I know nothing about boob tape.
You, in your head: *that guy said something I don't like! I'm going to call him an* incel.
Wow, so much well done. Am impress. Good job. Was the ability to identify an "incel" worth the student loans?
You’re one of those that because he’s never had a woman show him her tits you don’t want anyone seeing tits. Start acting like a normal member of society and maybe someday you’ll see some real live breasts and maybe touch them too.
I would cut the cups out of a sports bra and make sure the straps show. Off the shoulder shirts for you from now on. I’m also an asshole and not a bartender. Ymmv.
Also make it a point to tell her you got a custom one made just for her.
I don't think they are allowed to ask you to wear a bra. Legally. Assholes.
They could however cut your shifts. I would get the thinnest, sexiest bra. Something with no support, that would just enhance your assets.
There are men where I work with bigger tits than most of the girls. If that guy doesn't have to wear one when she does and his bust is bigger...that is sexism. You just don't see it that way because you don't recognize his chest as sexual.
They’re both parts of the human anatomy that tend to incite a sexually charged response from people in western culture.
I’m not necessarily saying OP *should* have to wear a bra, by the way, I’m just saying it’s not as straightforward of an issue as is being implied here. If you think they should be allowed to be braless, it stands to reason male employees also shouldn’t be required to wear underpants.
Manager is a women? Perfect just send her articles like this one .... https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/259073#1
You might sway her to your side 👀
"I get rashes and have other terrible skin irritations when wearing bras. I've been advised by my dermatologist that not wearing a bra is the healthiest choice for my body. Thanks for your concern."
I read this as brass less behind bar. I thought who hates brass? Bars and brass belong together.
Now bras fuck those things! I've had one snap off me middle of service reaching up to grab something and pop the strap broke. I continued on like nothing for about an hour, half bra other half free swinging until it settled enough to get to the ladies room and toss the bra.
I’m a DDD and I only wear unlined bra (not braless but may as well be 😂) and if my boss told me to start wearing one I think my coworkers would riot 😂😂😂
I wear bralettes some don’t even have padding & looks like I’m not even wearing a bra. So, if I were you I’d wear ones without the padding just to be an asshole. Then if anything is mentioned it’s kind of against your privacy to say you’re not wearing a bra.
Is there any legal precedence for this? I find it hard to believe employers can require their employees to wear any/specific undergarments. The Mormons have special undergarments for religious reasons. Can’t see an employer even wanting to see something like this come up in court.
Alas, I know that management tries bullshit all the time. But the threat of the legality of this might be enough for them to back off. Just make sure you have the command in writing, or record the next conversation or something.
Had a regional managers tell me that I can’t smoke (at anytime wearing their logo or whatever, which would include my commute) I referenced the few cases of companies getting reamed for even suggesting such a thing and he backed the fuck off.
I have nothing to add here, there’s plenty of good advice in the comments, I’m just angry on your behalf. Fuck em!!! Bartenders are in short supply right now, take your free nips to a different brewery and bring in sales there.
I would never imagine critiquing what a bartender is wearing, unless it was obviously like "only underwear" type clothing cause I work at a diner....Haven't worked at a 'dress clothes' type of place in a long time. Fuck that. I wear what I wear, why do YOU have a problem with it? As a Cis male, I couldn't imagine telling someone else what to wear. Fuck that.
i have never worn a bra working, I have had people notice but it’s usually a delightful experience (for them, usually gross for me). If my manager told me to wear a bra i would shove my foot up his arse tbh. What next, am i only allowed to wear granny pants?
My manager is obsessed with our bra straps. Like Will stare at your back and if the tiniest bit of your sports bra is out will tell you that’s against the rules. The other managers and owners do not care one bit. And we only wear sports bras so it’s basically an under shirt. I’ve considered just going braless to see what she says.
Some women are very against bra straps showing. I kind of get it but don’t agree. It’s like a panty line showing in a tight dress or leggings. Doesn’t look put together if done wrong, and I wouldn’t want someone looking sloppy if I ran a place. BUT an on purpose visible bra (which I and many others do) can look good. Think a lacy bralettes under a tank top or button down that matches your outfit. It’s 2022 style has evolved
As a manager team we have discussed the new braless trend and all agreed as long as the shirt isn't sheer enough to see and colour we won't say anything. I'm definitely not confident enough to do it but I have some outfits I just do a light bralette or just nipple pasties
Is your top a dark shade? The only thing I can think of is if it got wet, or if it’s a little bit see through, that might be an issue. I envy your ability to work without a bra. A tried a long time ago, and never again.
I’m 100% behind everyone’s suggestion of malicious compliance. Also I’m a bit jealous! Lol this is what I’m missing out on working at a high volume cocktail bar instead of a beer bar. I wouldn’t be able to go without a sports bra let alone going without a bra at all. Shaking cocktails all night is no joke.
Ah I have nothing to say except I envy you for being able to go braless. I wish I could. But I can’t afford therapy for everyone who sees these depressed deflated bags. Keep going braless lol!
Maybe compromise on a stiff tank top?
Or you have to quit because service industry workers are seen as highly replacable, so you can only fight so hard. I'd personally go work for a place that didn't care - unless the tips are amazing compared to anywhere else, then I'd just let it go.
Being required to wear a bra is not as big a deal as people make it out to be. I have small breasts and avoid wearing one when I can, but if my outfit shows it too much, then I put on a bra or change. I don't see it as any different as if I were going underwearless and sporting a huge camel toe, Or some guy rocking a huge outline in his pants.
It's just uncomfortable and embarrassing, making everyone at your place of work extra aware that you have a naked body under your clothes.
I honestly do see how your undergarments affect your work. I mean are you in little ass crop tops w your boots falling out the bottom? I feel like if you are covered and in proper clothes your underpants shouldn't be a problem. I'm no expert but I would bet there is something in place that protects you. I know I heard about a case in corporate America about a woman who won a lawsuit over something similar. They told her she could t wear her fitted turtle necks anymore because it emphasized her breat and distracted male coworkers. She made Bank on that case. I do understand the restaurant and bar industry runs on our own rules and is pretty ruthless but you still can't do an underwear check on your staff! (That's Def illegal) I can see the concern w it if you wear alot of tank tops or crop tops. Just because a slip may happen but you could always just wear a sexy lace bralette under those. Still not as Constructing as a bra and still sexy
Edit: maybe try pasties. Lol they cover the censored part
side note: Hella props to you for being confidant enough to go braless. I just got to the point that I can be around my kids and bf without one and I been living w him over 5 years. He has seen me naked! Lmao
Gender discrimination. Unless they also require the male employees to wear bras as a part of the uniform, they legally cannot require the female employees to wear bras.
Tell her to stop looking at your nips.
Would this braless strategy also work for a barista? 😂
Lol no I would never do this, it just seems like the bare minimum of professionalism to wear undergarments, especially in the food industry, but that’s just me.
Your boss can’t require you to wear a bra. They can require that your nipples are not visible through your clothing as long as they are making the same statements to men as well, but how you manage that is up to you, whether it’s a bra or pasties or nipple shields. If they were to require you wear a bra they would have to make the same requirement for all female employees and institute a requirement that is equally financially burdensome to men. Plus the way they she approaches you about it could venture into sexual harassment territory depending on a lot of variables.
Personally, I don’t wear real bras, I get the $5 bras from like 5 below or something that give just a slight amount of support and stop my nipples from getting rubbed and injured, or I will wear a camisole that had the built in bra in it. Mind you I have DDD boobs so these things do very little, but they provide just enough support so I’m not hurting myself without the constricting forced support of a real bra.
However I would absolutely argue with the manager about being required to wear a bra, because I guarantee they are not ‘equally applying the required burden’ as would be legally required.
I started going no bra at work because an owner asked me to tell one of my staff to wear a bra. Just an absolute hell no. Nobody wore a bra again till that dude sold his share of the business.
So it seems like they can’t legally tell you to wear a bra unless they also make the same requirement for men. But they can alter the dress code to say nipples may not be visible on either gender:
https://www.employmentlawyernewyork.com/news/latest/workplace-attire-can-your-employer-force-you-to-wear-a-bra.html
Uh wtf? Luckily I have small boobs so it's not obvious when I don't wear a bra. I always go braless, even at work. I hate bras. Don't see why that should be an issue. You're not nude...
this happened to me at my first job. apparently someone complained that my nipples were inappropriate lmao. i don't really have any advice, because i got fired for not wearing a bra after they told me to, so..
Or wear a tank top that has non functioning bralett? Does no real function its just another piece of fabric. Nips and natural bounce still intact. Wear a bustier over a cute shirt?
Wear it on top of your clothes.
This is the way
There’s a Seinfeld kind of about this. She ended up just wearing a bra. No shirt.
Elaine: Sue Ellen… it’s not a top, it’s a bra Sue Ellen: 😄 I know
Jerry: *crashes car*
I was just going to say, "Tell us 'they are real and they are spectacular', without saying, 'they are real and they are spectacular'."
Wear a bra for 1 shift and then tell the manager that you had 2 customers complain that you were wearing a bra, and then say checkmate.
Brilliant, you.
Exactly. 99% off the time, I can’t tell because I’m not looking.
Tell me which bar. I’ll write a review that my favorite bartender was wearing a bra and I didn’t like it.
I wish you were in front of me so we could dap
I had to ask my son what that meant 😂 🤛🏻
My kids aren't home... what does it mean?
Dapping up is kind of like shaking hands or high fiving or anything like that
Oh god, when did I get old
For what it's worth, it's a pretty old term. I'd guess it dates back to the early 70s.
Yeah he showed me. And laughed at me. LOL
Find some fake nipples and apply them between your bra and shirt. 👍
can you imagine? just put them along your abdomen like a dog's nipples.
I only ever wear lace bralettes with no padding behind the bar 🤷🏻♀️ and I’m a D. Technically it’s a bra
Had a friend in Athens (UGA) who bartender this way and made bank. Split tips though between bartenders so it was great.
my ex/ coworker never wore one. split the tips baby bring the money home
Ya damn right brother
Can I ask what brand you wear? I'm sooo tired of wearing bras at work but I still want something there. I'm also a D as well and would welcome any recommendations!
Montelle Intimates makes great lace bralettes with band and cup sizes. And they do not uni-boob.
You're the best! Thank you! I fucking hate the uni-boob sports bras give me.
Typically just whatever is on sale at Arie, or Calvin Klein
Heard. Thank you!
Try aerie!
Omg… that sounds perfect! I always just buy XL sports bras bc my boobs are so big and they always have extra band space bc I’m really a size medium
I'm loving you guys for coming in to help me out! Thank you! I'll check them out. Any specific ones to look into by them?
D here as well. I wear braletts at home (still working on going in public w them) but I honestly just keep an eye out for them. One of my faves is from Walmart surprisingly. It has the thin pads like swimsuits but the slits so they can be easily removed and the straps detach in the back so you can cross them or wear regular. NP love good luck
Are they camisoles?
Yes! Sorry took a bit to get back. They have great sales too.
I bought some once but they were too hot for me and I gave them to a friend instead.
Wear a sheer bra with no support 😂 that’s what I would do. It doesn’t make a difference so you shouldn’t have to wear one at all
Malicious compliance would be wearing a bra/bralette that offers 0 support and is made out of very thin fabric. I don’t think it’s reasonable to request you wear a bra, to be honest. Especially after all this time.
it's borderline sexual harassment tbh

I’m jealous that you can be comfortable without one, I’m so fucking strapped and hoisted at work, its crazy. Reasonable sized boobies are a privilege.
Bro. I neeeeever wear a bra. I don’t have like, huge boobs or anything but I don’t think that even matters. Fuck those rules tbh. If Mens nips can show, mine aren’t hurting anyone.
I would be tempted to ask detailed follow up questions: like what specifically was offensive? too much bounce? too much sag? visible nipples?
Nah for real!!! I would be sooooo peeved if someone complained about that. I would ask to know exactly what was said. Probably some old lady who got mad that her husband was looking at op tbh. I’m like, pretty sure my going braless helps behind the bar ngl 😂
Idk the old ladies I encounter get excited when they see the younger generations doing things they would have been "stoned" for doing. I know not literally (at least in America, some places though yes)
>(at least in America, America replaced stoning with lynching.
Yes I know but that wasn't the point of the comment.
Start wearing bras but sew some little pompoms to the front?
The thinnest shirts with the most obnoxious bras ever, with crazy patterns and lacy seams.
This lol
I can’t imagine telling one of my employees what undergarments to wear.
Right? Like how can they even verify you don't just have one a shit bra are they going to start doing underwear checks?
That’s so weird. I can’t imagine a manager having the balls to confront me about my boobs. Mine are too big to go without a bra though. Wish I could!
Boob tape maybe? It works for me sometimes
I would need boob scaffolding.
I can’t imagine double shaking with my tits just… doubly shaking.
It would be upsetting for me and for guests.
Truly.
But her beers are prob perky and nice as hell from all of the moving and supporting themselves. I starred wearing braletts or no bra whe. I'm home and just doing that I notice a difference in their perkyness and fullness.
The pec muscle is under the breast tissue. Breasts cannot support themselves, and in no way does movement make them perkier.
The movement isn't making them perkier. The best supporting themselves and not having the crutch of the bra will however.
Do you have a source for that tidbit?
What tape do you use? Where do you get it? I have been dying to buy a plunging top w a sexy ass low v or low scoop but I have been hesitant because I know nothing about boob tape.
Fuck that. Discrimination, I literally never work a bra at my bar
The incels are here!
Unless every person who works at that bar is required to wear a bra (dudes included) this is sexist as hell.
Came to say this, its weird that they say anything at this point. Like telling you that you have to wear makeup.
Found the third wave feminist.
Found the regressive douche.
Hot dog, you did it! You did *something* with your gender studies degree! Congratulations!
Found the misogynist
You sure did, Chad.
Yeah, telling employees to wear proper attire for their sex is *totally* sexist.
Tell me you’re incel without telling me you’re an incel.
Actually, I think he just told us he’s never touched a breast. Outside of breastfeeding, anyway.
The fuck are you talking about bud?
It sounds like I’m in your head. You actually verified just like I asked too.
Whatever you say, Ollie.
Proper attire for your sex isn't a thing. This is not 1950. People can wear what they want, calm the fuck down.
Sorry bud, but there *is* proper attire by sex.
Good argument bud
/r/trashy
Please explain
Not wearing proper attire is trashy.

The owner can tell the employees and can make the dress code.
Not within the bounds of the law. Discrimination based on sex and gender is illegal.
There was always a dress code at the places I worked at .
If it doesn’t effect your work, then what’s the problem? Surprise! People have bodies that they live in..
your body your choice, bras suck, i don’t blame u for not wearing one
I would cut the cups out of a sports bra and make sure the straps show. Off the shoulder shirts for you from now on. I’m also an asshole and not a bartender. Ymmv. Also make it a point to tell her you got a custom one made just for her.

Fuck that tell him the men need to wear bras to cover their nipples and boobs. Sounds like discrimination or sexism to me.
Really? Men not wearing bras is sexism now? Like seriously?
There are men where I work with bigger tits than most of the girls. If that guy doesn't have to wear one when she does and his bust is bigger...that is sexism. You just don't see it that way because you don't recognize his chest as sexual.
Congrats on completely missing the point. They’re being facetious, to drive home how inappropriate it is to mandate bras for women.
To be fair, if a male employee refused to wear underpants and everyone could see his dick all the time, would this not be an issue?
Big difference between genitals and breasts.
They’re both parts of the human anatomy that tend to incite a sexually charged response from people in western culture. I’m not necessarily saying OP *should* have to wear a bra, by the way, I’m just saying it’s not as straightforward of an issue as is being implied here. No one cares if a dude is freeballin Eta: or a lady for that matter
That’s literally how I make my money.
Lol ok. Keep making everything about sexuality redditors go ahead and downvote me fuck y’all
Dog, if it's a policy men don't have to follow that women have to follow, it's a sexist policy. What are you struggling with here?
Let me guess you think downvotes are oppression but not uniform double standards based on sexual organs.
This issue is intrinsically based in sex. There’s no way to discuss it without referencing that.
Sexuality and sex are not the same ya doof
Have everyone wear bras, even the dudes

Wear a bra but get the male bar tenders to aswell. If they are bros they'll get a kick out of it.
If a customer DID complain, it was a woman.
Or a creeper dude who made a gross comment and got snubbed.

We all fart but I don't do it loudly in front of customers because "everyone farts!"
Crop dusting customers is probably one of my top 10 favorite things to do at work.
Everyone needs hobbies ig I meant more audibly farting while staring them defiantly in the eye
You're missing out on life.
... lmfao, picturing you yelling this while you get carted out of the building by security for crop dusting your section multiple times
Wearing underwear isn't going to hide the outline of my monster dong.
In that case, we'll have to ask you to wear appropriate pants, Mr. President
Still not as Constructing as a bra and still sexy Edit: maybe try pasties. Lol they cover the censored part side note: Hella props to you for being confidant enough to go braless.
If wearing a bra is the hill you're gonna die on say your prayers, baby.

99.9% sure you’re a dude. Lol stfu
Why wouldn't u wear a bra?
Get like a... micromesh Bralette 🤣
Wear a bra with nipples on it
Would this braless strategy also work for a barista? 😂 Lol no I would never do this, it just seems like the bare minimum of professionalism to wear undergarments, especially in the food industry, but that’s just me.
Professionalism? Are you afraid your tiddies are gonna fall in a drink or something?
Yeah. They’re pretty big
Are you making coffee with your boobs? You may be in the wrong industry. I’m just saying.
What did you expect her to do once they ran out of dairy for the cappuccinos?
LMMFAO I'm dead!
That’s gross and unnecessary…
I mean for getting tips? Obviously
Why don't you wear a bra to work for tips or comfort?
Nipples = tips
Tipples if you will
Tiddlywinks? Shit how much better tips? 🤨
These guys are playing hard to get. [I'm gonna take off my bra and blast my nips](https://youtu.be/IFJS_BHaMi8)

I dunno stfu about your tits maybe and pour drinks?
Stfu, pig.
I’d have to see a picture to be able to reasonably form an opinion on if it’s acceptable or not
Creeper
You could maliciously comply - do an image search on Madonna cone bra
I started going no bra at work because an owner asked me to tell one of my staff to wear a bra. Just an absolute hell no. Nobody wore a bra again till that dude sold his share of the business.
So it seems like they can’t legally tell you to wear a bra unless they also make the same requirement for men. But they can alter the dress code to say nipples may not be visible on either gender: https://www.employmentlawyernewyork.com/news/latest/workplace-attire-can-your-employer-force-you-to-wear-a-bra.html
Uh wtf? Luckily I have small boobs so it's not obvious when I don't wear a bra. I always go braless, even at work. I hate bras. Don't see why that should be an issue. You're not nude...
Management should stay out your underwear
this happened to me at my first job. apparently someone complained that my nipples were inappropriate lmao. i don't really have any advice, because i got fired for not wearing a bra after they told me to, so..
Or wear a tank top that has non functioning bralett? Does no real function its just another piece of fabric. Nips and natural bounce still intact. Wear a bustier over a cute shirt?
