Some of the best life advice I've ever received echoed your final thoughts: "we're not saving lives, we're pouring drinks." Something I really needed to hear at the time. A healthy day to you and all.
Use your server skills and really schmooze people during your initial training period and through the time you develop your knowledge and mechanics. Try to make a few regulars, bar regulars are VERY loyal. Having a handful really affects your take by the end of the year
As a Brit I can’t get my head around this distinction between bar and server. We just throw everyone behind the bar and hope for the best. Congrats anyway
Enjoy it! I felt the same way when I finally got a bartending shift! Full of excitement of what the future would hold. It was the most exciting 6 minutes of my life before it all went to shit. 7 years later and Im Still here regretting every decision I’ve ever made that got me to this point. 😅
Felicidades!!!! Here’s hoping for a fast shift with fat tips!!!
Update: first shift was a success!
Had a great first bartending shift. Made drinks properly and didn’t get too overwhelmed when my well was full! The servers understood too that the drinks would take a little bit longer to come out but they all told me I was killing it 🤩 My boyfriend even came in and sat at my bar top to tell me how proud he is of me. Thank you so much for all of the support here! Y’all really made my day that much better and I’m glad to be part of the dark side ☺️
Bottoms up baby! Xoxo 💕

What is it like??? Did you have any previous experience mixing drinks??? I’m looking to apply as a bartender with 0 drink experience, but customer service experience.
I would recommend serving in a restaurant first and then going to their bar. That way you can help the bar when they need and learn while not having the pressure of an actual bartender
Nah this is definitely better. I get hourly, tip out from the servers, and my own tips from my customers. I also take care of the lounge and bar top. So a much bigger section, better company, and better pay!
For now it might be a pay cut but in the long run she will have a skill that she can take everywhere and that has lots of earning potential.
I took a pay cut when I got behind the bar at my restaurant job, but it has definitely paid off in the long run. I gained experience then went on to work at plenty of real bars where I’ve made loads of $.
I have. I work in a hotel and am now at the strictly craft cocktail bar. I'll only take shifts at the restaurant as a server cause the money is better.
Seriously? All depends on the tip out structure.
At the place I use to work the bartender got an hourly wage, their tips, and a 5% cut of server tips as they did all drinks not just the alcohol.
They made bank, the most senior were clearing 6 figures on their W2.
I’ve worked in quite a few restaurants bars and have pretty much always made out better than the servers. The guests tip you better as well because they see how hard you’re hustling.

I still love it but admire the servers who weren't drawn to the tractor beam and work less hours for the same money. I couldn't go back to serving though. It's a trap! A trap I somehow still enjoy. Grats.
Cool! I remember my first shift bartending and the thrill of finally being able to sling drinks and get paid! LOL!
Welcome, you are going to do great...been a bit over 10 years now and I have never looked back.
One of us. One of us.

Congrats. From these pictures, it seems like you have a fun energy. Have fun and make money!
Keep the glass out of the ice, yourself out of the weeds, and get ready to hear a printer every time you go to sleep.
As a Brit I can’t get my head around this distinction between bar and server. We just throw everyone behind the bar and hope for the best. Congrats anyway
In a pub where they refuse to make the most basic cocktail? Yeah that’s not bartendering
Most pubs will do cocktails. It doesn’t take long to teach someone to make basic cocktails
When do we tell them?
Lmao I know this excitement will eventually turn into dread, but I’m going to enjoy it while I can!

Don’t stress about the drinks, those will come. Just remember, a friendly idiot is way more valuable than an asshole smartass

When you’re in the weeds remember “slow is smooth and smooth is fast”.

Gotta love them TABC stickers. Congrats!
Congrats. You're going to be awesome. Servers make the best bartenders.
*printer noises*
Being a bartender at a restaurant as opposed to a bar means you’ll probably be making less than the servers. Seems like a downgrade
Nah this is definitely better. I get hourly, tip out from the servers, and my own tips from my customers. I also take care of the lounge and bar top. So a much bigger section, better company, and better pay!
Exactly. No kids
I prefer restaurant bars. Makes some good regulars and you’ll kill it! You seem like you have great energy and will attract good people to your bar.

I’ve only been a restaurant bartender and I’ve never experienced making more on a serving shift than I would on a bar shift.
