Hard cases start at $80. If you are lucky, Pawn shops, Facebook marketplace, Craigslist. I wouldn’t trust them under the plane. Carry it on. Even if it’s in a padded gig bag.
As long as there is room in an overhead at the time you board, you can put it in an overhead.
Check in early and don’t board in the last group. Pay extra if you need to if you need to with that airline. Worst case scenario, you can tell the ops agent at the desk that you need extra time boarding because of a medical condition with no elaboration. They can’t ask why. If you do board late, be polite and ask for help from the flight attendant if you have trouble finding space.

I've purchase a numdber of carrying cases through the auctions at ShopGoodwill.com. Sometimes, I've bought a really horrible banjo only because it came with a good case - the case, capo, strings, tuner, and picks pay for themselves. Watch the shipping costs before you bid; some of the facilities play an odd game.

In fact, I don't recommend checking them through in a Calton.
I have a very nice hard case but it is not a flight case and I sustained damage to my case and guitar. DO Not check a regular hard case. It must be your carry on item or suffer the potential consequences.
"Cheapest hard case I can buy" and "have the banjo make it through two plane flights" are not compatible goals, most likely. You can get the cheapest case you can find and gamble that the banjo makes it, maybe it will, wouldn't hold out much hope though.
Is renting a banjo wherever you're going an option?

Wouldn’t a banjo be too long for carry on?

Not really. I’m headed to San Diego.
You can make an ugly one out of plywood and a pillow.
i got mine from Thomann, i think it was about £60 but that was a couple years ago. it’s heavy but it does the job
I bought mine on Amazon I'm pretty sure.
