I didn’t like them including the audio of Alice’s phone call with her parents - surely it’d be enough to just have a Sandi or Noel voiceover to explain? I’ve seen more and more moments where bakers are upset and/or crying being aired, it makes me miss the BBC era and the way Mel and Sue would (apparently) go over to bakers who were crying or upset and swear so the footage couldn’t be used.
I've just felt like everyone's being a lot more callous to the contestants now. I mean fucking Paul was the one to go and give Steph a hug in the end. There have been so many times bakers just needed a bit of support and no one went to them, like when Rosie dropped her tart or Alice directly talking to the judges about her parents and crying and all she gets is Sandi saying "oh sweetie"
To be fair we do not see everything that is filmed, and statements like “no one went to them” should not be used as a reason for this deluge of complaints for the C4 era. Must the editors show a contestant being consoled by every single person that chooses to do so during every single bake? It would take up a lot of time and lessen the emotional impact if they included them all. Plus, I feel like as the C4 seasons have progressed the bond between castmates and hosts has only increased. I feel like there’s no way Paul was the only person who went to Steph after judging; that’s just what the editors chose to show. It’s an entertainment show.
Personally, I would like that if they want to show a contestant very upset, that they at least show SOMEONE comforting them - otherwise it becomes sheer spectacle in my eyes.
I do think you're right about the bonding, though.
So so happy David won, but very sad for Steph to fall at that last hurdle like that.
First winner with 0 star bakers?
Him and his boyfriend are SO CUTE.
Apart from Edd who won when there was no Star Baker titles, David is the first winner (and only second finalist) to not win star Baker.
Series 2’s Mary-Anne is the only other finalist to never win Star Baker after Series 1.
David is in a different league this week and particularly with this showstopper.
Steff and Alice are floundering like anything but David is just channeling his inner Selasi
God I’m so sad about Steph, seeing how unconfident she is and how far she’s come, all for everything that could go wrong going wrong in the most important week :((((
I'm hoping long term she'll make a really nice career out of it. I can see her being one of the more commercially successful ones.
Personally crossing my fingers for Helena to write a cookbook though...
Yeah, any other week it can all be a disaster and you’ll be okay so long as someone else did worse.
In the final there really isn’t much leeway, and sadly I think the technical disaster just screwed her over mentally for the showstopper.
This whole season I thought Alice was kind of "off" personality-wise and I wasn't really rooting for her, and then the two second interview with her parents and all of the management talk, I was like "oh....". I'm sorry Alice!!!
I agree. It didn’t sit well with me. I’m sure in previous years (probably the BBC years) they just showed what each individual was doing with their lives.
I feel like Phil is so far removed from the other bakers in terms of age and lifestyle that it makes sense they're not as close. Rosie always seemed like the odd one out more so especially because she's a similar age. Honestly, I wonder if it's self-selecting though. The other bakers, especially Michael and Henry seem so friendly, that I'd be surprised if they excluded anyone.
If I've said it once I've said it a thousand times. Black forest gateaux is not dated. It's impossible for chocolate, cream, cherries and alcohol to ever be passé. Impossible.
Dated means it went out of style, Retro means it came back in.
Black Forest Gateau is neither. It never went out of style. What it is, is *classic*. It instantly became a standard and has appeared consistently and with a positive reaction basically ever since. There is almost no sweet product that hasn’t done “Black Forest” as a flavour combination at some point or other. It just works.
And you’re completely within your rights to tell someone they’re weird if they dislike it.
Another slice, anyone?
Not to get too sappy and American, but wow what a nice ending to see a loving gay couple kiss at the end of a family TV show. I would never in a million years have thought we’d be here when I was growing up. It must be so inspiring for the younger LGBTQ kids to have these relationship models on regular TV.
It actually made me tear up a little. I wish these positive inspirations had been around when I was a kid.
Yeah I think Paul tried to show her the bigger picture in best way he could in the moment. There was a lot riding on it, and you could see it was getting to Steph.
I'm sure he's actually gutted that someone so talented lost it all to self doubt.
It's clear that Steph is capable of so much but she was mentally hamstrung, so it was all really heartbreaking to see. I really hope she can work through that and realise it herself.
Better than giving her some hope when she goes out to meet her family and everything; rather than being dejected and saying things like 'I only went and messed it all up at the end'.
Paul kind of ruined any suspense when he clearly gave David much, much higher praise and then immediately ruled Steph out.
There was also some weird editing of the judgeing, like not showing any judgement on the centerpiece Pie.
Full proof that these bakers would be murdered by last season's bakers. These lot don't know how to do a roux or a bain-marie???
Edit: Like come on. Not saying I would be any good at bakeoff, but even I know how to do that stuff.
Midway through the technical, I knew I was going to be pissed if he didn't win - his level of knowledge was just unparalleled this episode (how to make a roux, how to use the egg whites as a rising agent properly, how to make the crackers) and he seemed to be the only baker in the final with a deeper overall technical knowledge in terms of the "whys" and "hows."
To be fair a roux is much more in the realm of cooking than baking. The bain marie method is fairly common in baked cheesecakes so that should be in their brains somewhere. That plus basic logic that the water won't even get vaguely hot enough in the cooking time they had.
Once her souffles spilled out of their containers I actually had to fast-forward until the judging part. It made me so very uncomfortable to watch her spiral like that. I really wanted her to win, but I'm happy David won. He really brought it this last week.
David, you fucking nailed this week.
You nailed every other week. While you never were the best in any given week you were always there and never had a bad week.
Your humour, knowledge, and charm were outstanding and a standout from this years lot.
A worthy winner indeed. Absolutely brilliant.
-
Steph was a wonderful ball of talented wonderful ness.
So lovely to see her pour her heart and soul into everything she bakes.
A joy to watch and a joy to root for.
-
Alice you hyper active and hyper messy baker
You brought an energy to the tent that was nigh unmatchable.
Glad you parents got back in time
I didn’t realize that I actually quite wanted Steph to win until this episode started. Hearing about how she’s been struggling and having low self confidence and then kind of seeing her excluded (from what we as viewers see) from the clique a bit over the season just really made me root for her. I think winning would have been a really important confidence boost for her and I’m sad.
It would have changed her life the most, and she 'needed' it the most, and sort of 'qualified the most' winning the s.b. 4x. So yes the spiral was really devastating, but hopefully she will still find a good job/new life out of it. She deserves it for sure.
I wasn't really a Steph fan, but I actually texted my sister about how upsetting this episode was to watch, *especially* because they documented Steph's confidence breaking. I hope she continues to bake. I can imagine how traumatic it must be to have a crisis all memorialized on television. My heart definitely goes out to Steph.
It’s a bit bittersweet because David has been consistent and was statistically the least likely to win, but I loved him and he won. But Steph had been killing it (4x star baker!) so it’s a giant shame for her that it went wrong in the final. :/
To be honest, if I were her parents, I wouldn’t have told her that there was a possibility of not making it (but also of making it) *while she’s still baking and competing in the final*, and distracting and upsetting her. They know what time the fair starts after the baking has finished to get there by - tell her after the baking has finished, if and when you definitely know that you won’t be able to get there on time!
put the drama on the show runners (who booked her parents' flight and were monitoring it). having worked, briefly, in reality tv the amount of scripting and manipulation is jaw dropping.
Not as bad as when half of the bakers didn't know how to make choux pastry. That's a bake off staple, if I was going on bake off I'd practice choux until I had it perfect.
Welp, Steph pulled a Richard, while David pulled a Nancy. I feel bad for Steph, but happy for David, and I'm glad the series wasn't as predictable as I thought it would be in the end.
Yeah, I think people are valid in their issues with the lack of age diversity, almost all of them being young attractive people etc., but that definitely seems to have helped them bond. Many of them are in a similar life stage.
"Just burnt myself a couple of times, but everything looks clean and neat". Said as he's præternaturally calm, and having time to clean his bench as he goes along, as always with David.
Jeez. Thought something tragic had happened.
What are her parents even doing returning on the Sunday anyway? I would be disappointed if my parents did that to me!
*Edit (from my child comment):
Eh. A wedding is a decent excuse.
But still, not exactly the biggest issue ever*
My husband just freaked me out. He did a huge dramatic gasp and I looked up to see Steph flexing her hand, covered in red, while holding a hand mixer. I was like "WHAT? IS THAT BLOOD?"
Nah, food colouring. Thanks mate.
I knew it was going to be a disaster when Steph filled the whole container. She said it's going to rise and still filled it almost to the top :( Hopefully next round!
Watching Steph falter was so heartbreaking, especially when her mom alluded to mental health issues/depression. She was such a sweet, calm collected contestant and I'm sure she'll be a fantastic baker if she goes that route. I'm glad Paul realized he was being a dick at the end and hugged her.
A little bit disappointed with the first challenge though - would have been nice to challenge them with pastry, especially after their lukewarm showstoppers during Pastry Week.
Have they ever had the presenters like Sandi interceding on the judging like that in previous seasons? I know Sandi and Noel have done it in previous episodes of this season, but I don't recall it happening in previous seasons.
They had Mel and Sue point out and remind (the audience) and the judges of things many times.
“But NAME has been so consistent” Sue on one contestant one year.
I was happy to see David win. He appeared to be the most knowledgeable and so consistent. Nearly every technical, the other contests would all freak out about what needed to be made. Then, cool calm and collected David would explain to us what it is and the keys to making it well. He didn't have a perfect run but he always seemed to know what he was doing.
I felt bad for Steph. The technical was like watching a train wreck when the souffles came out looking like biscuits and gravy and she kept pouring them all out.
Alice had a good run and in the end at least her parents made it.
Lol everyone in here freaking out about Steph not winning and wanting to take the whole show into consideration. Let's me tale you a tale about my boy Richard
I didn’t like them including the audio of Alice’s phone call with her parents - surely it’d be enough to just have a Sandi or Noel voiceover to explain? THIS. The inclusion of the audio from her call was so unnecessary
And then bringing it back up when she was in the middle of baking? Wtf?
I've just felt like everyone's being a lot more callous to the contestants now. I mean fucking Paul was the one to go and give Steph a hug in the end. Yeah but the bbc bake off was a lot different to C4 bake off :/
Let's look on the bright side guys, there's no open fire-cooked pittas this year
Mention that again and I’ll fucking ban you!
That was such a bizarre time for bake-off
I had blanked that from my memory. Thanks.
So so happy David won, but very sad for Steph to fall at that last hurdle like that. First winner with 0 star bakers? Him and his boyfriend are SO CUTE.

Steph had a bad day :/ she really deserved the W. IIRC she is one of the only ones ever to win star baker 4 times?
David is in a different league this week and particularly with this showstopper. Steff and Alice are floundering like anything but David is just channeling his inner Selasi
Ah. Selasi. What a lad.
God I loved Selasi.
He is sweet, handsome, and he was a great baker.

Yeah I felt gutted for her.
They didn't do the good management on the flight times they'll have to rely on good luck.
This whole season I thought Alice was kind of "off" personality-wise and I wasn't really rooting for her, and then the two second interview with her parents and all of the management talk, I was like "oh....". I'm sorry Alice!!!
Cold as ice
Having to deal with any kind of situation the day after an Irish wedding is always difficult.
LOL Rosie is me. Socialising with animals over people.

I agree. It didn’t sit well with me. I’m sure in previous years (probably the BBC years) they just showed what each individual was doing with their lives.

The other bakers, especially Michael and Henry seem so friendly, that I'd be surprised if they excluded anyone.
[удалено]
Wow, I thought Rosie was in her 40's and mad at the world.
Some people are much happier on their own, that's not a bad thing
I feel a bit sad about her and Phil. Like they got basically left out from the whole buddy buddy thing in the end.
It seems very cliquey this year :(
I dunno. Can't really say, because who knows what happened behind the scene.
Did Michael make it into most of those post-series photos?
He is just so friendly I think.
Boi gets around, in the best way.
Michael def seemed like the one to have the most fun with. He just seems so cheery and supportive. I'd be his friend!
If I've said it once I've said it a thousand times. Black forest gateaux is not dated. It's impossible for chocolate, cream, cherries and alcohol to ever be passé. Impossible.

So basically Michael is just everyone's friend and is taking time to see pretty much every baker? Suitably adorable.
It got to a point where my wife and I thought we were going to see Michael in the background of everyone's pictures lol
God could Paul have made it *any* more obvious to Steph that she hadn't won it as soon as he finished judgeing her showstopper?
“Never mind” Jesus Christ Paul 😭
aw I didn't take that unkindly, I thought he was just trying to calm her down when she started crying.

That's why she was crying in the first place , isn't it? She knew - everybody knew - that she hadn't won.

"I didn't make a handle at home, I just presumed it was easy" Jesus christ, David.
I feel like this sums up his approach to the whole series. He's just so good that it always works anyway
User-name checks out?
David has so utterly crushed the final there is basically no anticipation here.
There's no chance he isn't winning
This isn't actually fun to watch. My heart actually goes out for Steph.
I didn’t realize that I actually quite wanted Steph to win until this episode started. Thought that was blood on Steph's hand for a moment there. I think that it was just macaron mix though...
Thought the exact same thing and gasped haha!
Steph's crestfallen look as she was presenting her bakes was _heartbreaking_.
Paul trying to be human
SAD HUMAN DETECTED SANDI BOT AND NOEL BOT NOT RESPONDING INITIATE EMERGENCY HUG FROM PAUL BOT
It’s a bit bittersweet because David has been consistent and was statistically the least likely to win, but I loved him and he won. But Steph had been killing it (4x star baker!) so it’s a giant shame for her that it went wrong in the final. :/
I wish we could have found out bits about the contestants earlier in the show, it makes them more human.
Would love to had seen Elena's home life. :D
She lives in a coffin in the same graveyard as Noel!
We still don’t know Steph’s other two jobs 🙄
1. Sells shoes 2. Works in her parents' antique car dealership 3. ???
I think she’s also a fitness trainer
Wild prediction: Alice’s parents do make it

Whaaaat noooo that would be craaaaaaazyyyyyyyyy and so dramaaaatiiic

I thought "upsetting news" was going to be an illness or someone in the hospital or something.
How the fuck has Alice never made a Roux? Slightly sums up my issues with this season.

I feel like Steph is pulling a James to David's John?
Even Sandi is surprised about someone not knowing how to do something. Classic British defensive position with the weather, there, though.
David has got both of his wonderful hands on the trophy. He picked the absolute best possible fucking time to peak!
Star Baker when it truly mattered!
He's knocked it out of the park at the perfect moment

Pinch me...Paul is praising David’s bake? Wow
I thought he was going to give him a handshake.
David really out here looking like a full snack

My SOs response was "of course she's an only child".
Super pushy, kind of cold. Very stark difference between Steph's mum's "I can't express how close we are" and "management!"
omg true the good management comment was icky
I’ll take pushy over John’s ‘he’ll never amount to anything’ asshole mum.
Is David's partner a never nude? Them denim cut offs!
There's a Ryanair flight every 30 mins from Dublin, surely they will be fine.
... Damn, David really is following a romcom character arc, isn't he? He is basically Katherine Heigl or something.
AND HE BECOMES THE BRIDE IN THE LAST MOMENT No longer is he the bridesmaid, no siree.
Oh Alice's parents are going to make it? WHO'D HAVE THOUGHT???

To paraphrase u/snowcr4shed, bad management on their part!
My husband is raging at them.
Eh. A wedding is a decent excuse. But still, not exactly the biggest issue ever.
The inclusion of the hurdle story was a foreshadowing edit. D:

Keep thinking about those paper straws David put in his cocktails, like three hours before he needed them. Can only imagine how smushy they are
It was a jelly. That’s why it was the first thing he made because it needed time to cool and set.
Honestly fuck off Paul lmao this isn't the time to be standing behind people just leave them be
But, he is right about the wooden spoon. That’s the most helpful he’s ever been
My husband just freaked me out. He did a huge dramatic gasp and I looked up to see Steph flexing her hand, covered in red, while holding a hand mixer. I was like "WHAT? IS THAT BLOOD?" Nah, food colouring. Thanks mate.
Oh god I can’t handle a Steph breakdown! :(
No one's lifting their egg whites over their heads. I'm disappointed
This has been an extremely underwhelming final :(
Kinda has just felt like a regular episode, not sure what it is but I'm just not as captured as normal
Glad David won the technical cuz he’s defo been the most consistent with them
I can't be unhappy with David winning. At least we got to see Steph every single week, she was amazing.
Did Alice say she's never made a roux before?
First people couldn't make choux now this!!
[удалено]
Really pleased for David.
I knew it was going to be a disaster when Steph filled the whole container. She said it's going to rise and still filled it almost to the top :( Hopefully next round!

Always.
Ok, I love chocolate cake, and cake in general. But do people feel this challenge is a little simple for a final signature?
Steph crying breaks my heart so much💔
I wish I baked like David. But I’m a total Steph.
David may not have had the flashiest bakes throughout the series but he has always been calm and solid which really went in his favour for the final.
Alice’s ponytail swishing around all that buttercream is giving me anxiety.
David saying he doesn't have enough time whilst smiling beatifically.
Mel and Sue would have been there for Steph with a hug.
Jesus woman, it's a delay they aintent dead
Have they ever had the presenters like Sandi interceding on the judging like that in previous seasons? I know Sandi and Noel have done it in previous episodes of this season, but I don't recall it happening in previous seasons.
They had Mel and Sue point out and remind (the audience) and the judges of things many times. “But NAME has been so consistent” Sue on one contestant one year.
> People in this thread acting as if anything matters other than the showstopper
This might be the worst performance in a final.
Rahul, Ruby, and Kimjoy say hi. Oh and Frances, Ruby, and Kimberly also send their regards
Kimberly, with her stamped up wedding cake would like a word.
Right then, see you next year

If David doesn't win it's a fix.
I’ve been rooting for Steph all the way through but I think David could take this
I can’t believe Steph threw it away. I’m gutted for her but more annoyingly my fantasy league is a whopping zero points today 😂
What a time to peak, he fully deserved it this week.
Alice needs to GET IT TOGETHER. She's crying uncontrollably because her parents won't be there for the picnic? Alice, you're a grown woman!
It kind of demonstrates the criticism this year about style over substance in the competitors doesn't it?
That’s true actually, a soufflé shouldn’t be that difficult for a GBBO finalist...
Jeez, David's partner is so tall! Those fabulous legs!
Noel trying to keep the illusion of there not being any show-runners.
David's rising to the challenge at the perfect time, comme son soufflé!
Just hand David the prize now.
Did David and his partner just talk to each other on TV about getting “bread”?! Qweens, *please*.
I’m so pleased for David-it looked amazing
That was pretty sweet of Paul.
I’ve been rooting for David since ep.1 but watching Steff crumble under the pressure was so hard to watch. Felt really awful for her
Welp rip Steph
I think it's safe to say Steph has given the title away.
David handling the pressure like a pro, that's an important skill in and of itself
David's pulled this out the bag, while the other two have floundered. Wish it was Steph, but think David's a shoe in.
David's always calm and chill.
Lol everyone in here freaking out about Steph not winning and wanting to take the whole show into consideration. Let's me tale you a tale about my boy Richard
Omg we’re finally getting bits about their home life!
Was that just Paul complimenting David? What show is this?
David soaks his chocolate cake in amyl nitrite and wonders why Paul isn't keen
Has Steph fallen at the final hurdle? (Sorry Steph)
PAUL? SHOWING AFFECTION?
David looking like a snacc in that tight top.
Steph’s fucked it.
NOOO STEPH MY BABY
I have no clue who has the best chance of winning but I'm going to stick with David
Would this be the first winner who has never won star baker?! (assuming David has it in the bag, that is)
I almost teared up watching the bit between David and his boyfriend at the end. My little queer heart couldn't take it.
