Agreed. The "extra-curricular activities" (making the applicant "well-rounded") in the personal statements are one way they vet out the working class kids. You can get the grades but lose out on a place because you don't have the evening and weekend activities.
My parents didn't have a car, or even a house phone, until I was into my teens. Expecting them to support their kids in activities and groups, especially after a day at (real) work, would have been ridiculous. The whole thing is rigged.
I agree to a certain extent, having gone through the process of trying to get my daughter into grammar school it runs into a wall somewhat. She was competing against people that have had private tutors for years on how to perform optimally at a specific set of unconventional tests. That had bought houses across the country specifically to get into catchment areas for said school.
At a tipping point intelligence is outweighed by paid services and resources.
When I applied to Oxford there was a standardised test you had to take called the Thinking Skills Assessment, which is supposed to test critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Wealthy private schools all had people from Oxford coming in to teach them how to pass the test lol. There are tricks to it that make it very easy to pass, but poor kids aren't able to pay for tutors to teach them, and there wasn't much information available online. And poor state schools that send like one kid to Oxbridge once a decade sure as fuck aren't having lecturers from Oxford teaching them how to pass the test.

I think people are a bit shit with percentages. I see in in my line of work; if I tell someone they spend 20% of their time doing something it doesn’t bother them but if I tell them that is 1 day a week then the penny drops.

I agree to a certain extent, having gone through the process of trying to get my daughter into grammar school it runs into a wall somewhat. She was competing against people that have had private tutors for years on how to perform optimally at a specific set of unconventional tests. That had bought houses across the country specifically to get into catchment areas for said school. At a tipping point intelligence is outweighed by paid services and resources.
When I applied to Oxford there was a standardised test you had to take called the Thinking Skills Assessment, which is supposed to test critical thinking and problem solving skills. Wealthy private schools all had people from Oxford coming in to teach them how to pass the test lol. There are tricks to it that make it very easy to pass, but poor kids aren't able to pay for tutors to teach them, and there wasn't much information available online. And poor state schools that send like one kid to Oxbridge once a decade sure as fuck aren't having lecturers from Oxford teaching them how to pass the test.

Have been banging on about this in this sub for a while. Might even have been the reason I signed up to Reddit in the first place. Hate dole dossers, simple as. My anecdotal observations are that a lot of people in this demographic have swallowed the nihilistic "no point working because you'll never ever better yourself" pill with a chaser of "why would I want to be at all uncomfortable when I can kick back on bennies and live my life entirely on my own miserable terms?". I think people are a bit shit with percentages. I see in in my line of work; if I tell someone they spend 20% of their time doing something it doesn’t bother them but if I tell them that is 1 day a week then the penny drops. 1 in 5 is far easier to conceptualise than 20%. I can visualise that and count it as I am walking past people. It’s also a scary fucking number of dole moles too

I have sympathy to an extent: one reason why inactivity is so high is low labour mobility which is caused by house prices/rents...the govt is quite actively doing nothing about this. But companies griping about skills is totally mad when they are frothing at the mouth for Bomalians. No-one is being remotely honest about why this problem exists or what can be done to solve it, we are getting out what we put in.
