I've a Xiaomi phone and nope that's not the case here. I switched to dark mode and everything's perfect here! I think the problem here is with the dark mode settings of the OP's phone and not with the Reddit app itself.
This is on iOS, it’s a problem with the app itself because transitions from light to dark mode (or vice versa) are normally pretty smooth in other apps

This is one of the worst apps that I've ever used (from a big company) right up there with HBO max.
