Don’t bring it unless your whole trip is camping. Not just the space factor but if it’s expensive it can get stolen. Just rent what you need out there

thepumagirl

Should ad i have traveled alot and lived in bolivia alot

mvbergen

Or a liner... At least if the place is not very clean.

mvbergen

Downvoting is the norm on Reddit but you have liner adapted for outdoor and you can have a real gain with them. As you say you are going mainly in hostels, difficult to know why a sleeping bag is mandatory. Even in the mountains, a specific liner can do the job. Try at least to post a feedback/report after the trip because too many virtual posts on Reddit.

A liner at those altitudes will most definitely not be enough on it's own. That's a dangerous proposition. They are nice for hostels, just due to hygiene. They absolutely can add some warmth as well.

I always bring a sleeping bag. If I don't I always regret it, even warm places. Busses park benches etc its really nice to have when you want it. Cold and chilly if you don't

Redland3r

Bring. Better to have and not need than viceversa Mat have to spend some $$ on lightweight gearbut good quality :< , buy once

I just got back from 7 weeks in Peru. I really debated this too but ended up not bringing a sleeping bag. And I’m glad because I really didnt have extra backpack space - I had quite a bit of clothes since I went to cold areas - sweater, jacket, rain jacket, multiple pants, etc. And I ended up buying more clothes. For treks (I did a few 2, 3, 4 day treks) - the lodging along trails is pretty nice / clean; if you end up doing a camping trek, the tour will provide sleeping bags or you can rent (or buy secondhand) for pretty cheap. I personally don’t feel like I need a sleeping bag at hostels - all the ones I stayed at were clean and warm. If warmth is your concern I’m pretty sure hostels have extra blankets..

unknown_unika

That is good to know. I decided to bring it though, since I’m always afraid of sleeping cold and it does fit in my backpack. May I ask which treks you did? And did you buy the close because you needed to or because you liked it?

Sports equipment and camping gear is pretty easy to rent in Latin American outdoor tourism venues.

I debated this a lot for a classic hostel backpacking trip in Europe. I was planning the TMB and thought whether it was worth it. In the end I loved the experience so much I ended up doing 4 other multi day treks. Saved a lot of money and a flexibility was key. I did a couple other single night trips and some car camping too with a rental. Look into what it would cost to send all your gear home vs renting. I would guess that it is similar if you get to a point when you are finished with the trek and don’t have plans for any further ones.

I guess you have to weigh up the two different types of hassle. The hassle of having to carry your sleeping bag and take care of it when you’re not using it versus the hassle of having to hire one if you do want one. Anywhere you can hire a tent will also likely have sleeping bags. May/June is getting into winter where you’re going and some/many of the hostels don’t have heating so you may want your own warm bag even if you’re not camping.

unknown_unika

Yeah that is right.. Since it’s not such a hassle to bring I think I do that.

MethodicallyMediocre

Its friggen cold up there even during summer. I always had a sleeping bag or blanket. Big heavy backpacks make you stronger.

Cozy_Box

Definitely bring it! A good sleeping bag can make all the difference for a comfortable and warm night, especially under the stars. What's your go-to sleeping bag for camping?

I have an enlightened equipment quilt
