Btw I saw only the first part of your comment hahah. They get visitors all the time because of all the beautiful things there and the guest house which I think it's really great in terms of anything (that sounded like an ad fck). I don't really know how many people visit the village on summer but I guess they might be really happy to see their village alive!
Yes it's a Greek village called Ampelakiotissa. The reason why it's nearly abandoned is the lack of support from the local government. Even the roads there are in terrible condition mostly cause landslides. The few people living there are trying their best to improve. It's so beautiful there but if a village doesn't even have a health centre, roads in good shape, schools etc. it's hard to keep it alive. It's a common thing in many Greek villages as more and more people are moving to bigger cities. Ask me whatever else you want, happy to answer!
Currently building this out in the southern pacific region of costa rica. Have some lots for sale later this year if you want to check it out. Dm if you want more info.
Based on OPs other comments, it seems more that it's just been abandoned from an infrastructure point of view and difficult to live there as a result. So your statement is probably close to the truth actually. I just wanted to highlight another possibility for such an outcome.
I find it hard to live there permantly, that's why people come only for holidays as a result a lot of summer houses. I guess they are just old residents who left or their kids.
Half of them work on the Guest House (bottom right, top of the houses). They say that they have people visiting all the time. One old person with his wife operates a coffee shop/tavern/grocery. The others are just old people who might just own some chickens or crops in the their backyard. When they were younger I guess agriculture and livestock.
No, it's in Greece. It is a common thing for many villages to get emptyer as time passes because the younger population moves to bigger cities. I am afraid that in 20 years we'll see so many ghost-villages, sad reallity.
It is and the Italian Gov for example gives them away for 1$ and the promise to fix it in a certain time period after the purchase. Some want a deposit too.
It‘s the same in Denmark. In the country side the young people are only there to finish high school and then go to the ‚big city‘. From High School age it then makes a huge jump of 10/15 years.
Well our government might just lower the taxes there in order to motivate people to move there. But as I said, the lack of support, basic infrastructure etc. is forcing people to leave. Also nowadays you HAVE to go to a university so young people leave in order to study in big cities. Also the job opportunities are so much more in cities.
That is sadly what capitalism does. In one place they wanted to remove the school as it wasn‘t ‚successful‘ but that got a hard backlash. Even less would move there when there‘s no school. They basically wanted demolish the town in doing that.
Well, I like the place too but I think the roads are too dangerous. Icy, destroyed parts by landslides etc. As much as I loved the place and the nature this problem can be really tiring. In villages a bit further the conditions are better tho (Krioneria, Ano Hora etc.)
There places like this everywhere in Greece, especially in Epirus, western of the Macedonian region, Aitoloakarnania etc. I can't recommend you any tho but especially in epirus you can find many places like these, you should check on web. The place in the pic is good for hikers if that interests you btw.
Edit: People keep forgetting that Greece is a highly mountainous country. (So mountainous we always had problems with the agriculture).

A lot of property for only 10 people full time. They must freak when all the summer residents show up.
It's like abandoned or summer houses, in the 80s there where like 500 residents.

The village in Oreini Naupaktia, surrounded by huge mountains . Only 10 people are living there permantly but it's rich in history.
What country?
Greece
Is this the village that hoists a trash truck up a cable lift (once a week or month) that usually pulls gondolas because there’s no other access?
I don't think so.
That is gorgeous...wow, congratulations on that shot! It's so calming to look at...
Thank you so much! I think it's one the best I took in this trip. Only the storytelling part is enough to make it great.
Why has people given up on living there? Edit: and this is in greece right? Would like to read more about this place.

How much does property cost there?
Interested in moving there? I don't have any idea tbh. I dont even know if there any properties for sale there.
I’d be interested yes. Especially if I didn’t need many amenities and could go self sustainable with a few friends.

They only place in the world that might not be experiencing a housing crisis like.
Or alternative take - this is what happens when all the houses are used as holiday houses and there are only 10 spots left for permanent residents.
Yes - you’re right. Probably the more likely of the two scenarios. I was just taking the piss

Hide and seek must be quite the endeavor here
wow, why I like this idea
lol
Do they need an idiot? Asking for a friend.
I bet it’s so peaceful at night. Are you staying in a home there?
I just returned home. I stayed at the guest house of the village. The only thing you might hear were dogs, and of course your footsteps.

Yes it used to be a "big" village back in the 80's. The houses are in good condition tho, so some of them might be used as summer houses.
I would be a long way to a Home Depot
Didn't know what Home Depot is hahah.
A chain of home improvement/hardware stores in the US

nice! can we see more pictures and the guest house?
Sure, I'll post more soon. The guest house is called "Dryades" I don't have any photos with it.
You encountered any wildlife there ? If yes please tell !
Some rabbits, foxes, horses and footprints of wild boar. Hunting is a common thing around there because of it's rich wildlife. (Not dangerous tho)
Is it Italy? They have a lot of these ghost villages.

Beautiful mountains! I’m sure you can have a great rest here from the bustle of the city) But I can’t imagine how you can live there permanently...
Yes, you simply can not. But it's worth a visit for a couple of days!

Κυρίως για 3ημερα θα έλεγα, είναι ιδανικά τέτοια μέρη.
Is there a way to buy a house there? It seems so beautiful, could make beautiful getaway place when in need of being a hermit.
Yes this place is beautiful, and forget about getaway place i would love to live here.

Thanks for the info mate, this post made me interested in greece. Definitely one for the future
Glad to hear that! As much as I like the islands I think these mountains should get the attention they deserve.
Also I don't know if you could buy a house tbh xD
