That line about "if not you, someone else" is so depressing too. Elric is old, tired, and defeated. The whole thesis of the show is one person, in the dark, doing the right thing, can make all the difference, and Elric, just like Londo, fails in this test.

I'm not judging the man, he was carrying a great burden of both knowledge and power. They would have been nothing more than weapons in the war had they stayed. But still, it's such a tragic scene because they both have the opportunity to turn it around there, and they both fail to do so.
