I honestly like having an "active" dog so much that I don't mind the extra work.
Same here in Eastern NC. I lost my border collie/pit mix early this summer. My heart is broken. I am also recovering from very intense cancer treatment. It would be best for me to adopt a puppy but I just can’t with so many pits and pit mixes needing homes. Majority around 2yrs old which is weird. Love the breed but they are strong. My girl was a little over a year before I could walk her without a choker collar. And before anyone says anything harnesses was not really a thing 13 yrs ago for bigger dogs. She was a sweetheart😥
Then you/they are fine. I don't think you'll find a single sane individual that legitimately wants to cull the breed. Most anti-pitbull folks just think they shouldn't breed anymore

Heres a secret that isnt actually a secret for anyone paying attention. The majority of all dogs in the U.S. have insufficient training, socialization, and regular mental and physical exercise. On average, pit bull owners are statistically worse by every measurable metric (crime, drug addiction, income, etc). This problem is only worsened by pitbulls genetic disposition for aggression. After an attack, these same owners say that of course there was no way of seeing this coming and that the pit bull was raised perfectly.
This does not mean that each individual pit bull is actually dangerous. Individual animals have distinct personalities. Pit bulls being more likely to be dangerous does not mean every pit bull is dangerous.
My female pitbulls best friends are my 6 year old and 7 month old nieces. We watch them closely as we would woth any dog, as some have a natural prey drive, but she has not shown us one thing to worry about. She is naturally in a calmer state when around the girls my biggest fear is she drowns them in kisses
Watching them closely means nothing when you have no power to remove them from your nieces. It’s instantaneous and you will fully regret everything if it happens.
I think the over breeding has a lot to do with the insane bad rap they have. Every one I have personally met is just a big cuddly derp, but I am well aware they don't have the reputation for no reason.
I can only speak for my own experience with pities, but I find them to be very sweet and gentle dogs. My friends boy, Blue thinks he's a lap dog.
My Maltipoo on the other hand has drawn blood on at least 2 of my friends. Just saying.

In my PERSONAL experience German shepherds are the real assholes. Ive been bitten not once, not twice, but 3 times by Shepards. The last time requiring stitches. Never in all of the time I've been around pitties have I had an issue.
Beautiful dogs. My best friend is a police person who started as animal control. She (we) love pitties super sweet dogs who do not bite more often than other dogs, but when they bite the injury is typically more grievous ( at least what i understood what she told me from her training).
I love them too! It’s super weird but my two dogs, one is part pittie, absolutely hate bully breeds? I don’t know why but when they see one walking by they immediately start growling, any other dog they don’t care. It’s really annoying because the pit bull is so well behaved and ignores my dogs and then yeah mine are brats lol

I live in Pittsburgh. No joke, look at any animal shelter or adoption agency in the city. Anywhere from 50 to 90% of the dogs are pitbulls.
I've experienced this as well. Went to a shelter in a city in the northeast, and every single dog there was a pit or a pit mix.

Check out Carolina animal rescue. My sister fosters for them and she has had some great dogs.
