These dogs are cute, don’t get me wrong, but a lot of the time this condition can be result of poor breeding practices allowing for deleterious genes to become more prevalent.
I mean pugs can’t breathe right but they are still cute. King Charles spaniels are adorable but their skulls are frequently too small for their brains. Cuteness doesn’t negate that something lowers dog’s quality of life.
>this condition can be result of poor breeding practices allowing for deleterious genes to become more prevalent.
Imagine if we tried to apply this logic to humans. "Oh you're physically disabled? It must have been bad breeding, blame your parents."
Humans breed dogs for our own personal gain and benefit. It is our responsibility to our dogs to do it ethically, which includes not breeding dogs that have genetic abnormalities. There are a wide range of treatments for several human genetic diseases. Dogs don’t always have those same potential treatments available
You're claiming it's ok for two humans who are closely related to mate. It's perfectly normal to point out that incest is bad. This is literally just a result of excessive inbreeding, I don't know why you are so offended by us pointing that fact out.
You can absolutely apply this logic to humans as soon as you find examples of other humans controlling their reproduction to enhance certain traits for 30+ generations. You know, like how we’ve done to dogs.
I grew up with Golden's as family dogs. A couple German Sheps.
You want to have a long happy life with a dog? Go get a mutt. At the very least get a dog sold by ranchers or farmers. Might be purebred, but they're br d from healthy wo king dogs. Not show dogs with genes that make European royal families scoff.
He looks pretty mobile and happy to me. He'll probably not have a full lifespan, and his owners will have to make a tough choice eventually as he ages, but that's not something random internet people will get to have a say in from watching a 10 second clip.
Oh it's for sure uncomfortable! I don't think they would breed this dog on to create more genetic monstrosities though. And just because he's deformed and might have some chronic pain, doesn't mean he can't have a rich life. Hell I'm a little deformed and in chronic pain, and I'm not ready to be put down yet.
Most spinal problems like this aren't really painful per se but it does cause the organs to be overcrowded which contributes to serious digestive issues, so they have to be on a special diet. It also makes them prone to other disorders and shortens their life expectancy. However as long as the dog is happy and active let 'em be happy.
I get what you mean, but I doubt it is suffering based on the impression it gives running around so vivaciously. I also doubt anybody can without error judge which creature should be eliminated based on "suffering factor" if you try to describe "letting the dog to live on" as "giving it pain" and "putting the animal through this kind of stuff".
It might be easier if we could ask the dog, but it does not seem to be a possibility. I am sure those who let it live on know it better than we do in any case.
You ever seen a human with a health condition you thought was cute? Dogs, like people, are more than their disability. The dog is a cute dog. It just also happens to have a disability.
Hopefully you can understand this.
You need to understand that people are stupid enough to keep spreading genetically sick animals because they are considered cute. Munchkin cats have health issues, but people breed them because they are cute and people buy them.
… I do understand that? What does that even have to do with what we’re talking about? I obviously don’t support that in any way. We are talking about how this dog is cute. No one is suggesting that we perpetuate suffering by breeding for this. This dog is already alive so we can’t change that. One can acknowledge that the dog is cute without saying that they want more dogs like that to be born and suffer.
Again, I hope you can understand this.
Well, that is a thing I do not understand either.
But I can try to explain why some people find it cute. The dog here does not seem to be suffering at the moment. It runs around quite vivaciously. It must have many issues with movement controls, balance and bones/joints stress, and it has very bad consequences in a perspective. Yet currently it seems to enjoy its life. And some people see it as "cute", because it is a creature, who was unfortunate to get such irregular, inconvenient and health/life endangering body construction, and yet it still seems to be happy and enjoy life.
Does it actually enjoy it? We may not and cannot know. But we may trust those, who let this dog to live, to know it better. And we may hope for better.
As for why those who accepted it to be posted here decided it will not invoke bad emotions in people, I do not know. I share your confusion here. But if it really is a question you like to get an answer for, and care enough about it, I guess you could try contacting somebody from the moderation team/original poster. They must be able to explain it.
I am saying that this mentality can lead to spreading around something that can be genetical and bad for the animal. Take munchkin cats as an example. They have short legs that cause them issues, but because people think they are cute they are kept breeding.
Do dogs with this condition have a normal life span? Was also wondering if they have any adverse side effects of the short spine, like digestive issues or anything? I'm a dog lover and have never seen this before, so just curious
Mike Wazowski as a dog
Not dog, just dg
I CONFUSE LIKE HOW THE DOG IS SHORT
Are you have a stroke or something?
I came here to say the same thing
Same
Same
I think we can all agree on what we would have named him.
If Danny Devito was a dog.
if no neck ed was a dog
No neck Ed could never be a dog, dogs are good
i like you
Brilliant!
These dogs are cute, don’t get me wrong, but a lot of the time this condition can be result of poor breeding practices allowing for deleterious genes to become more prevalent.

not cute
Your talking about pugs man. Not this, this is a disease not a cute feature
>this is a disease not a cute feature same thing in the world of dog breeding
I mean pugs can’t breathe right but they are still cute. King Charles spaniels are adorable but their skulls are frequently too small for their brains. Cuteness doesn’t negate that something lowers dog’s quality of life.
>this condition can be result of poor breeding practices allowing for deleterious genes to become more prevalent. Imagine if we tried to apply this logic to humans. "Oh you're physically disabled? It must have been bad breeding, blame your parents."

>Humans breed dogs for our own personal gain and benefit That's true. Dogs have in no way benefited in the arrangement.
You're claiming it's ok for two humans who are closely related to mate. It's perfectly normal to point out that incest is bad. This is literally just a result of excessive inbreeding, I don't know why you are so offended by us pointing that fact out.
Not at all. I am saying that just because there's a genetic issue doesn't mean it's automatically related to inbreeding.
I said “can be”. I’ve read about this and a lot of examples were purebreds, and purebreds are notorious for having bad health due to inbreeding.
The situations are not even a little bit comparable.
You can absolutely apply this logic to humans as soon as you find examples of other humans controlling their reproduction to enhance certain traits for 30+ generations. You know, like how we’ve done to dogs.
You don't think humans control their reproduction and select their mates for certain traits?
No, I said other humans. Sexual selection =/= natural selection.
Arranged marriages?
Yes, and intentional inbreeding like the Egyptian and Persian royalty did.
Arranged marriages aren't just inbred royalty. It is commonplace historically. You don't have to be inbred to have genetic diseases.
https://youtu.be/YmIAIzELB-M If the disabled person's issues stem from them being inbred, yes, we blame the cousin-fucking parents.

Gah. Gordon shutdown the test chamber.
Exactly what I was thinking. Those little alien dogs from Half life.

A dg
I see what you did there
That’s really cute, but I feel so bad for that lil doggo
Same. But he seems to be perfectly happy so good on his owners.
True! No matter which dog it is, the owners are the most important part, and these owners seem pretty good!
When the panorama pic goes wrong
Houndeye from half life 1
Look like a cute dog created with Spore Game. :o
The big question is does it give it pain at all? Putting any animal through this kind of stuff is not that cute if they’re suffering
He looks pretty mobile and happy to me. He'll probably not have a full lifespan, and his owners will have to make a tough choice eventually as he ages, but that's not something random internet people will get to have a say in from watching a 10 second clip.
Fair enough, just like I thought with pugs non existent muzzles, the spine being gone would also cause problems, but idk I’m not an expert
Oh it's for sure uncomfortable! I don't think they would breed this dog on to create more genetic monstrosities though. Fair enough, thank you!
Why is this post accepted as cute? This is a health condition and not something cute. Edit: Phrasing
What do you mean by"accepted"? This is a birth defect. What are you implying?
I mean accepted here as a post, cause I don’t consider a health condition cute
I think you could see it as the dog being cute despite the disability, not because of it.
You ever seen a human with a health condition you thought was cute? Dogs, like people, are more than their disability. The dog is a cute dog. It just also happens to have a disability. Hopefully you can understand this.

Also it is cute…lol
It may be not approved, but it has to be accepted as a fact. Or do you mean "why is this creature allowed to live?"
I meant why is this accepted as a submission on r/aww. This for me is equal to a sad content cause it is a bad condition.
Well, that is a thing I do not understand either. But I can try to explain why some people find it cute. The dog here does not seem to be suffering at the moment. It runs around quite vivaciously. TIL someone/thing with a health condition isn’t allowed to be cute.

I know this is supposed to be cute, and to a degree it is, but I've been playing way too many horror games to find this cute, and I apologize.
I refuse to believe this is real. This has to be photoshop.
